We report here an in‐depth analysis of the reaction mechanisms involved in the formation of polymer dimers formed by the coupling of polystyryllithium (PSLi) with dichloromethane (DCM), dibromomethane (DBM), and diiodomethane (DIM) in tetrahydrofuran at ?78 °C. The DBM‐mediated reactions give a high degree of coupling but generate 1,2‐diphenyl linkages in addition to the expected 1,3‐diphenyl linkages and small amounts of β‐substituted styrenic end groups that are detectable by fluorescence measurements. This is consistent with the formation of bromobenzyl end groups by lithium–bromine exchange and PSLi‐mediated elimination. The formation of α‐substituted styrenic end groups by conventional displacement and elimination is also possible. Although reactions of PSLi with DCM show no coupling at all, DIM is a much better coupling agent than DBM, significantly suppressing side reactions. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of novel polyamide‐imides III containing 2,6‐bis(phenoxy)naphthalene units were synthesized by 2,6‐bis(4‐aminophenoxy)naphthalene and various bis(trimellitimide)s in N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NMP) using triphenyl phosphite and pyridine as condensing agents through direct polycondensation. The polymers were obtained in quantitative yield with inherent viscosities up to 1.53 dL/g. Most of the polymers showed good solubility in NMP, N,N‐dimethylacetamide, N,N‐dimethylformamide, and dimethyl sulfoxide and could be solution‐cast into transparent, flexible, and tough films. The films had tensile strengths of 84–111 MPa, elongations at break of 8–33%, and initial moduli of 2.2–2.8 GPa. Wide‐angle X‐ray diffraction revealed that most polymers III were amorphous. The glass‐transition temperatures of some of the polymers could be determined by differential scanning calorimetry traces, recorded at 247–290 °C. The polyamide‐imides exhibited excellent thermal stabilities and had 10% weight loss at temperatures in the range of 501–575 °C under nitrogen atmosphere. They left more than 57% residue even at 800 °C in nitrogen. A comparative study of some corresponding polyamide‐imides is also presented. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A bis(ether anhydride) monomer, 1,1‐bis[4‐(3,4‐dicarboxyphenoxy)phenyl]cyclohexane dianhydride ( IV‐A ), was synthesized from the nitro displacement of 4‐nitrophthalodinitrile by the phenoxide ion of 1,1‐bis(4‐hydroxyphenyl)cyclohexane ( I‐A ), followed by alkaline hydrolysis of the intermediate bis(ether dinitrile) and dehydration of the resulting bis(ether acid). A novel series of organosoluble poly(ether imide)s ( VI a–i )(PEIs) bearing cyclohexylidene cardo groups was prepared from the bis(ether anhydride) IV‐A with various aromatic diamines V a–i via a conventional two‐stage process. The PEIs had inherent viscosities in the range of 0.48–1.02 dL/g and afforded flexible and tough films by solution‐casting because of their good solubilities in organic solvents. Most PEIs showed yield points in the range of 89–102 MPa at stress‐strain curves and had tensile strengths of 78–103 MPa, elongations at breaks of 8–62%, and initial moduli of 1.8–2.2 GPa. The glass‐transition temperatures (Tg's) of these PEIs were recorded between 200–234 °C. Decomposition temperatures of 10% weight loss all occurred above 490 °C in both air and nitrogen atmospheres, and their residues were more than 43% at 800 °C in nitrogen atmosphere. The cyclohexane cardo‐based PEIs exhibited relatively higher Tg's, better solubilities in organic solvents, and better tensile properties as compared with the corresponding Ultem® PEI system. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. To study living anionic polymerization, 3‐(triethylsilyl)propyl isocyanate (TEtSPI) monomer was synthesized by hydrosilylation of allylamine with triethylsilane and treatment of the resulting amine with triphosgene. The polymerization of TEtSPI was performed with sodium naphthalenide (Na‐Naph) as an initiator and in the absence and presence of sodium tetraphenylborate (NaBPh4) as an additive in tetrahydrofuran (THF) at ?78 and at ?98 °C. A highly stabilized amidate anion for living polymerization of isocyanates was generated for the first time with the combined effect of the bulky substituent and the shielding action of the additive NaBPh4, extending the living character at least up to 120 min at ?98 °C. Even the anion could exist at ?78 °C for 10 min. A block copolymer, poly(n‐hexyl isocyanate)‐b‐poly[(3‐triethylsilyl)propyl isocyanate]‐b‐poly(n‐hexyl isocyanate), was synthesized with quantitative yields and controlled molecular weights via living anionic polymerization in THF at ?78 °C for TEtSPI and ?98 °C for n‐hexyl isocyanate, respectively, with Na‐Naph with three times of NaBPh4 as a common ion salt. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined and narrow molecular weight distribution macrocyclic poly(2‐vinylnaphthalene) (P2VN) and poly(2‐vinyl‐9,9‐dimethylfluorene) (PDMVF) containing a single 1,4‐benzylidene or 9,10‐anthracenylidene unit have been synthesized via the potassium naphthalide initiated polymerization of the monomers followed by the end‐to‐end coupling of the resulting P2VN dianions under high‐dilution conditions with 1,4‐bis(bromomethyl)benzene or 9,10‐bis(chloromethyl)anthracene. Molecular characterization has been carried out by size exclusion chromatography, nuclear magnetic resonance, differential scanning calorimetry, ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy, and matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry. The thermal properties show distinct differences between the cyclic and matching linear polymers, with the macrocycles showing much higher glass‐transition and decomposition temperatures. The absorption bands are both hyperchromic and hypochromic with respect to the model aromatic compounds, and this is consistent with intensity borrowing. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cationic polymerization of 2,3‐dihydrofuran (DHF) and its derivatives was examined using base‐stabilized initiating systems with various Lewis acids. Living cationic polymerization of DHF was achieved using Et1.5AlCl1.5 in toluene in the presence of THF at 0 °C, whereas it has been reported that only less controlled reactions occurred at 0 °C. Monomer‐addition experiments of DHF and the block copolymerization with isobutyl vinyl ether demonstrated the livingness of the DHF polymerization: the number–average molecular weight of the polymers shifted higher with low polydispersity as the polymerization proceeded after the monomer addition. Furthermore, this base‐stabilized cationic polymerization system allowed living polymerization of ethyl 1‐propenyl ether and 4,5‐dihydro‐2‐methylfuran at ?30 and ?78 °C, respectively. In the polymerization of 2,3‐benzofuran, the long‐lived growing species were produced at ?78 °C. The obtained polymers have higher glass transition temperatures compared to poly(acyclic alkyl vinyl ether)s. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Novel ketenes, (4‐chlorophenyl)ethylketene and (4‐bromophenyl)ethylketene, were synthesized by dehydrochlorination of 2‐(4‐halophenyl)butanoyl chlorides, and their anionic polymerizations by lithium (4‐methoxyphenoxide) in tetrahydrofuran at ?20 °C were carried out to afford the corresponding polyesters with narrow molecular weight distributions (weight‐average molecular weight/number‐average molecular weight < 1.3) quantitatively. Polymerizations with various feed ratios afforded the corresponding polyesters with predictable molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions. Kinetic studies of the polymerizations at ?78 °C revealed that the polymerization rates were apparently larger than that of ethylphenylketene, which is considered to be responsible for the enhanced electrophilicities of the monomers via the introduction of electron‐negative halogen atoms. Monomer conversion agreed with the first‐order kinetic equation. These results strongly support the living mechanism of this polymerization. The obtained polyesters were modified by a palladium‐catalyzed coupling reaction of the side‐chain 4‐halophenyl group with 4‐methoxyphenylboronic acid, demonstrating their potential as reactive polymers. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. It was first found that (diisopropylamido)bis(methylcyclopentadienyl)lanthanides (MeC5H4)2LnN(i-Pr)2(THF) (Ln = Yb ( 1 ), Er ( 2 ), Y ( 3 )) exhibit extremely high catalytic activity in the polymerization of methyl methacrylate. The reactions can be carried out over a quite broad range of polymerization temperatures from -78 to 40°C. The catalytic activity of the complexes increases with an increase of ionic radii of the metal elements, i.e. Y > Er > Yb. The results of GPC (gel permeation chromatography) indicate that the number-average molecular weights (Mn) of polymers obtained exceed 100 × 103 and the molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn) becomes broad with the increase of temperature. Furthermore highly syndiotactic PMMA (87.7%) can be obtained by lowering the reaction temperature to −78°C. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 36: 1593–1597, 1998  相似文献

A series of poly(o‐hydroxy amide)s having both ether and sulfone linkages in the main chain were synthesized via the low‐temperature solution polycondensation of 4,4′‐[sulfonylbis(1,4‐phenylene)dioxy]dibenzoyl chloride and 4,4′‐[sulfonylbis(2,6‐dimethyl‐1,4‐phenylene)dioxy]dibenzoyl chloride with three bis(o‐aminophenol)s including 4,4′‐diamino‐3,3′‐dihydroxybiphenyl, 3,3′‐diamino‐4,4′‐dihydroxybiphenyl, and 2,2‐bis(3‐diamino‐4‐hydroxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane. Subsequent thermal cyclodehydration of the poly(o‐hydroxy amide)s afforded polyethersulfone benzoxazoles. Most of the poly(o‐hydroxy amide)s were soluble in polar organic solvents such as N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone; however, the polybenzoxazoles without the hexafluoroisopropylidene group were organic‐insoluble. The polybenzoxazoles exhibited glass‐transition temperatures (Tg) in the range of 219–282 °C by DSC and softening temperatures (Ts) of 242–320 °C by thermomechanical analysis. Thermogravimetric analyses indicated that most polybenzoxazoles were stable up to 450 °C in air or nitrogen. The 10% weight loss temperatures were recorded in the ranges of 474–593 °C in air and 478–643 °C in nitrogen. The methyl‐substituted polybenzoxazoles had higher Tg's but lower Ts's and initial decomposition temperatures compared with the corresponding unsubstituted polybenzoxazoles. For a comparative purpose, the synthesis and characterization of a series of sulfonyl polybenzoxazoles without the ether group that derived from 4,4′‐sulfonyldibenzoyl chloride and bis(o‐aminophenol)s were also reported. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A novel monomer, 2,2‐bis‐(4′‐fluorobenzoylphenoxy)‐4,4,6,6‐bis[spiro‐(2′,2″‐dioxy‐1′, 1′‐biphenylyl)] cyclotriphosphazene, was synthesized and polymerized with 4,4′‐difluorobenzophenone as a comonomer and 4,4′‐isopropylidenediphenol or 4,4′‐(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphenol in N,N‐dimethylacetamide at 162 °C for 4 h to give two series of aromatic cyclolinear phosphazene polyetherketones containing bis‐spiro‐substituted cyclotriphosphazene groups. The structure of the monomer was confirmed by 1H, 13C, and 31P NMR. The effect of the incorporation of the bis‐spiro‐substituted cyclotriphosphazene group on the thermal properties of these polymers was investigated by DSC and thermogravimetric analysis. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. This article deals with the polyaddition of a novel bis(seven‐membered cyclic carbonate), 1,2‐bis[3‐(1,3‐dioxepan‐2‐one‐5‐yl)‐propylthio]ethane, with the diamines 4,9‐dioxa‐1,12‐dodecanediamine and p‐xylylenediamine. The polyaddition was carried out at 30–70 °C for 6–24 h in dimethyl sulfoxide to obtain the corresponding polyhydroxyurethanes with number‐average molecular weights of 10,900–35,700 in good yields. The reaction of a monofunctional seven‐membered cyclic carbonate, 5‐allyl‐1,3‐dioxepan‐2‐one (7CC), with monoamines was also carried out to examine the reactivity in comparison with that of six‐ and five‐membered cyclic carbonates. The reaction rate constants of 7CC with n‐hexylamine and benzylamine were estimated to be 48.5 and 11.0 L/mol · h, respectively, in dimethyl sulfoxide‐d6 (initial reagent concentration = 1 M) at 30 °C. The seven‐membered cyclic carbonate ring was 2.98 and 5.82 kcal/mol more strained than those of the six‐ and five‐membered cyclic carbonates, respectively, according to a semiempirical molecular orbital calculation with the PM3 Hamiltonian. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A bis(ether amine) containing the ortho‐substituted phenylene unit and pendant tert‐butyl group, 1,2‐bis(4‐aminophenoxy)‐4‐tert‐butylbenzene, was synthesized and used as a monomer to prepare polyimides with six commercial dianhydrides via a conventional two‐stage procedure. The intermediate poly(amic acid)s had inherent viscosities of 0.78–1.44 dL/g, and most of them could be thermally converted into transparent, flexible, and tough polyimide films. The inherent viscosities of the resulting polyimides were in the range of 0.46–0.87 dL/g. All polyimides were noncrystalline, and most of them showed excellent solubility in polar organic solvents. The glass‐transition temperatures of these polyimides were in the range of 222–259 °C in differential scanning calorimetry and 212–282 °C in thermomechanicl analysis. These polyimides showed no appreciable decomposition up to 500 °C in thermogravimetric analysis in air or nitrogen. A comparative study of the properties with the corresponding polyimides without pendant tert‐butyl groups derived from 1,2‐bis(4‐aminophenoxy)benzene is also presented. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. A novel diamine, 4,4‐bis(p‐aminophenoxymethyl)‐1‐cyclohexene (CHEDA), was synthesized from 4,4‐bis(hydroxymethyl)‐1‐cyclohexene and p‐chloronitrobenzene by nucleophilic aromatic substitution and subsequent catalytic reduction of the intermediate dinitro compound. A series of aromatic polyimides were prepared from CHEDA and commercial dianhydrides with varying flexibility and electronic character in two‐step direct polycondensation reactions. High molecular weight polyimides with intrinsic viscosities between 0.57 and 10.2 dL/g were obtained. Most of these polyimides, excluding those from PMDA and BPDA, were soluble in polar aprotic solvents such as NMP and DMAc, and many were also soluble in CHCl3 and THF. DSC analysis revealed glass transitions in the range of 190 to 250°C. No significant weight losses occurred below 450°C in nitrogen and 350°C in air. Bromination and epoxidation of cyclohexene double bond in CHDEA–6FDA (3e) were investigated as examples of possible polymer modifications. Qualitative epoxidation and selective bromination of the double bond were demonstated. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 37: 1189–1197, 1999  相似文献

A new dicarboxylic acid containing a diphenylmethylene linkage, bis[4‐(4‐carboxyphenoxy)phenyl]diphenylmethane (BCAPD), was prepared from bis(4‐hydroxphenyl)diphenylmethane and p‐fluorobenzonitrile via an aromatic nucleophilic substitution reaction followed by hydrolysis. A series of novel polyamides were prepared by the direct polycondensation of BCAPD and various aromatic diamines. The polymers were produced with moderate to high inherent viscosities of 0.80–0.85 dL g?1. Nearly all the polymers were readily soluble in polar solvents such as N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidinone, N,N‐dimethylacetamide, N,N‐dimethylformamide, and dimethyl sulfoxide, in less polar solvents such as pyridine and cyclohexanone, and in tetrahydrofuran. All the polymers were amorphous, and the polyamide films had a tensile strength and a tensile modulus greater than 80 MPa and 2.0 GPa, respectively. These polyamides had glass‐transition temperatures between 249 and 274 °C, and their temperatures at a 10% weight loss were 477–538 and 483–540 °C in nitrogen and air atmospheres, respectively. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. The anionic polymerization of 2‐vinylnaphthalene (2VN) has been studied in tetrahydrofuran (THF) at ?78 °C and in toluene at 40 °C. 2VN polymerization in THF, toluene, or toluene/THF (99:1 v/v) initiated by sec‐butyllithium (sBuLi) indicates living characteristics, affording polymers with predefined molecular weights and narrow molecular weight distributions. Block copolymers of 2VN with methyl methacrylate (MMA) and tert‐butyl acrylate (tBA) have been synthesized successfully by sequential monomer addition in THF at ?78 °C initiated by an adduct of sBuLi–LiCl. The crossover propagation from poly(2‐vinylnaphthyllithium) (P2VN) macroanions to MMA and tBA appears to be living, the molecular weight and composition can be predicted, and the molecular weight distribution of the resulting block copolymer is narrow (weight‐average molecular/number‐average molecular weight < 1.3). Block copolymers with different chain lengths for the P2VN segment can easily be prepared by variations in the monomer ratios. The block copolymerization of 2VN with hexamethylcyclotrisiloxane also results in a block copolymer of P2VN and poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) contaminated with a significant amount of homo‐PDMS. Poly(2VN‐b‐nBA) (where nBA is n‐butyl acrylate) has also been prepared by the transesterification reaction of the poly(2VN‐b‐tBA) block copolymer. Size exclusion chromatography, Fourier transform infrared, and 1H NMR measurements indicate that the resulting polymers have the required architecture. The corresponding amphiphilic block copolymer of poly(2VN‐b‐AA) (where AA is acrylic acid) has been synthesized by acidic hydrolysis of the ester group of tert‐butyl from the poly(2VN‐b‐tBA) copolymer. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Three new copolymers, namely poly(fluorenevinylene‐alt‐naphthalenevinylene) ( N ), poly(fluorenevinylene‐alt‐anthracenevinylene) ( A ) and poly(fluorenevinylene‐alt‐pyrenevinylene) ( P ), were synthesized by Heck coupling of 9,9‐dihexyl‐2, 7‐divinylfluorene with a polynuclear aromatic dibromide. The 9,10‐disubstituted anthracene was obtained exclusively for A while N and P were obtained as a mixture of two isomers with predominant the 1,4‐disubstituted naphthalene and 1,8‐disubstituted pyrene, respectively. The polymers were soluble in common organic solvents and decomposed above 370 °C. Their glass transition temperature increased from 58 to 110 °C by increasing the number of the phenyl rings of the polynuclear aromatic moiety. Rather high‐efficiency blue and blue‐greenish photoluminescence (PL) of these copolymers in solution was largely decreased in their films, indicating the presence of concentration quenching in the solid state. The OLED using these polymers demonstrated green EL in the case of copolymers N and A , and red EL in the P derivative with ηEL = 0.26–0.31%. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. New 1,4‐naphthyl and 2,6‐naphthyl‐containing polyarylates having inherent viscosities up to 1.28 dL/g were synthesized by the high‐temperature solution polycondensation from the acid chloride of 1,4‐bis(4‐carboxyphenoxy)naphthyl or 2,6‐bis(4‐carboxyphenoxy)naphthyl and various bisphenols. Most of the resulting polyarylates showed amorphous characteristics and were readily soluble in common organic solvents such as N,N‐dimethylacetamide (DMAc), N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NMP), o‐chlorophenol, and chloroform. Transparent, flexible, and colorless films of these polymers could be cast from the DMAc solutions. Their cast films had tensile strengths ranging from 54.9 to 84.2 MPa, elongations at break from 5.3% to 19.0%, and initial modulus from 2.0 to 2.8 GPa. These polymers had glass transition temperatures in the range of 172–280°C and began to lose weight around 400°C, with 10% weight loss being recorded at about 450°C in air. Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) reveals that the polyarylates containing isopropylidene linkages have three transitions on the temperature scale between −100 and 300°C. However, only two transitions were observed in the other polyarylates without isoproylidene linkage. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 37: 645–652, 1999  相似文献

A novel bis(ether anhydride) monomer, 9,9‐bis[4‐(3,4‐dicarboxyphenoxy)phenyl]fluorene dianhydride (4), was synthesized from the nitrodisplacement of 4‐nitrophthalonitrile by the bisphenoxide ion of 9,9‐bis(4‐hydroxyphenyl)fluorene (1), followed by alkaline hydrolysis of the intermediate tetranitrile and dehydration of the resulting tetracarboxylic acid. A series of poly(ether imide)s bearing the fluorenylidene group were prepared from the bis(ether anhydride) 4 with various aromatic diamines 5a–i via a conventional two‐stage process that included ring‐opening polyaddition to form the poly(amic acid)s 6a–i followed by thermal cyclodehydration to the polyimides 7a–i. The intermediate poly(amic acid)s had inherent viscosities in the range of 0.39–1.57 dL/g and afforded flexible and tough films by solution‐casting. Except for those derived from p‐phenylenediamine, m‐phenylenediamine, and benzidine, all other poly(amic acid) films could be thermally transformed into flexible and tough polyimide films. The glass transition temperatures (Tg) of these poly(ether imide)s were recorded between 238–306°C with the help of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and the softening temperatures (Ts) determined by thermomechanical analysis (TMA) stayed in the range of 231–301°C. Decomposition temperatures for 10% weight loss all occurred above 540°C in an air or a nitrogen atmosphere. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 37: 1403–1412, 1999  相似文献

The quasi‐living cationic copolymerization of 3,3‐bis(chloromethyl)oxetane (BCMO) and ε‐caprolactone (ε‐CL), using boron trifluoride etherate as catalyst and 1,4‐butanediol as coinitiator, was investigated in methylene chloride at 0°C. The resulting hydroxyl‐ended copolymers exhibit a narrow molecular weight polydispersity and a functionality of about 2. The reactivity ratios of BCMO (0.26) and ε‐CL (0.47), and the Tg of the copolymers, indicate their statistical character. A series of new strictly alternating aromatic poly(ester‐imide)s having inherent viscosities of 0.20–0.98 dL/g was synthesized by the diphenylchlorophosphate (DPCP) activated direct polycondensation of the preformed imide ring‐containing diacid, 3,3‐bis[4‐(trimellitimidophenoxy)phenyl]phthalide (I), with various bisphenols in a medium consisting of pyridine and lithium chloride. The diimide–diacid I was prepared from the condensation of 3,3‐bis[4‐(4‐aminophenoxy)phenyl]phthalide and trimellitic anhydride. Most of the resulting polymers showed an amorphous nature and were readily soluble in a variety of organic solvents such as N‐methyl‐2‐pyrrolidone (NMP) and N,N‐dimethylacetamide (DMAc).
