Using density functional theory (DFT) calculations, an enhanced theoretical examination was made of the radiation-induced radicals in alpha-d-glucose. For the carbon-centred radicals in this sugar, the effect of the model space on the radical geometry as well as on the calculated radical hyperfine coupling tensors was examined. The findings were compared with previously published tensors, as determined by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments and single molecule DFT calculations. A cluster approach was adopted, in which intermolecular interactions (predominantly hydrogen bonds) between the radical species and its environment were explicitly incorporated. This substantially improved the correspondence with experimental findings in comparison with single molecule calculations of an earlier examination. In a direct comparison between both computational methods for the glucose radicals, it was shown that the extent of the model space plays an important part in the determination of the radical geometry. Furthermore, the model space also has an impact on the calculated hyperfine coupling tensors. Full cluster EPR calculations, in which the paramagnetic properties are calculated for the entire model space of the cluster, give an excellent agreement with the experimental EPR measurements.  相似文献

A theoretical study is performed on the radiation-induced radicals in crystalline alpha-l-rhamnose, using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Irrespective of earlier structural assignments, a host of possible radical models is examined in search for a structure that accurately reproduces experimental electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) properties. A cluster approach is followed, incorporating all hydrogen bond interactions between radical and crystalline environment. Hyperfine coupling tensors as well as g tensors are determined and a comparison is made with available experimental data. Three carbon-centered hydroxyalkyl radicals are validated, in accordance with experimental suggestions for their structure. The occurrence of a carbon-centered oxygen anion radical for one of the radical species is rejected on theoretical grounds, and instead an altered hydroxyalkyl structure is suggested. Our cluster calculations are able to determine g and hyperfine tensors for the oxygen-centered alkoxy radical in rhamnose, in accordance with one of the two measurements for this species. For all radical models, quantitative agreement with experimental hyperfine tensors is obtained by performing full cluster DFT calculations. The inclusion of the molecular environment for the determination of this EPR property proved to be essential.  相似文献

The trinuclear Cu(II) complex [(talen)Cu(II)(3)] (1) using the new triplesalen ligand H(6)talen has been synthesized and structurally characterized. The three Cu(II) ions are bridged in a m-phenylene linkage by the phloroglucinol backbone of the ligand. This m-phenylene bridging mode results in ferromagnetic couplings with an S(t) = (3)/(2) spin ground state, which has been analyzed by means of EPR spectroscopy and DFT calculations. The EPR spectrum exhibits an unprecedented pattern of 10 hyperfine lines due to the coupling of three Cu(II) ions (I = (3)/(2)). Resonances around g = 4 in both perpendicular and parallel mode EPR spectra demonstrate a zero-field splitting of D approximately 74 x 10(-4) cm(-1) arising from anisotropic/antisymmetric exchange interactions. The DFT calculations show an alteration in the sign of the spin densities of the central benzene ring corroborating the spin-polarization mechanism as origin for the ferromagnetic coupling.  相似文献

An EPR (electron paramagnetic resonance) and ENDOR (electron-nuclear double resonance) study of 9-ethylguanine crystals X-irradiated at 10 K detected evidence for three radical forms. Radical R1, characterized by three proton and two nitrogen hyperfine interactions, was identified as the product of net hydrogenation at N7 of the guanine unit. R1, which evidently formed by protonation of the primary electron addition product, exhibited an unusually distorted structure leading to net positive isotropic components of the alpha-coupling to the hydrogen attached to C8 of the guanine unit. Radical R2, characterized by two nitrogen and three proton hyperfine couplings, was identified as the primary electron loss product, *G+. Distinguishing between *G+ and its N1-deprotonated product is difficult because their couplings are so similar, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations were indispensable for doing so. The results for R2 provide the most complete ENDOR characterization of *G+ presented so far. Radical R3 exhibited a narrow EPR pattern but could not be identified. The identification of radicals R1 and R2 was supported by DFT calculations using the B3LYP/6-311+G(2df,p)//6-31+G(d,p) approach. Radical R4, detected after irradiation of the crystals at room temperature, was identified as the well-known product of net hydrogenation at C8 of the guanine component. Spectra from the room temperature irradiation contained evidence for R5, an additional radical that could not be identified. Radical concentrations from the low temperature irradiation were estimated as follows: R1, 20%; R2, 65%; R3, 15%.  相似文献

Low-molecular weight nitroxide labels (nitroxides) are commonly used as probes in electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The nitroxides exhibit multiple lines in their EPR spectrum due to hyperfine coupling of the unpaired electron with the nitrogen nucleus. In EPR imaging, these hyperfine lines cause either hyperfine-based limitations in the maximum obtainable image resolution or hyperfine-based artifacts in the reconstructed image. In this article we discuss the effect of hyperfine artifacts on the quality of the image and report the application of a numerical method based on forward-subtraction principles for removing hyperfine artifacts in the measured projections. We demonstrate using computer simulations and imaging phantoms that marked enhancement in image quality and resolution can be obtained by removing the hyperfine-imposed limit on the gradient magnitude and performing post-acquisition corrections for removing hyperfine artifacts in the image.  相似文献

A series of 4-dialkylamino-2,5-dihydroimidazole nitroxides with pyridine-4-yl, 4-dimethylaminophenyl or 4-hydroxyphenyl groups in position 2 of the imidazole ring were prepared using the reaction of RMgBr with corresponding 5-dialkylamino-4,4-dimethyl-4H-imidazole 3-oxides. The EPR spectra of the nitroxides were shown to be pH-sensitive due to consecutive protonation of the amidino moiety and the basic group(s) at position 2 of the imidazole ring. The 5,5-dimethyl-4-(dimethylamino)-2-ethyl-2-pyridine-4-yl-2,5-dihydro-1H-imidazol-1-oxyl showed a monotonic increase in the isotropic nitrogen hyperfine (hfi) coupling constant alpha(N) of 1 .4 G over a pH range from 2 to 6.5. Such a broad range of pH-sensitivity could be useful for many biophysical and biomedical applications, including pH-monitoring in the stomach.  相似文献

The direct EPR detection of thioacyl radicals has been reported only once, while thioacyl nitroxides remain an elusive species. We failed to detect the thioacyl radicals from two thioaldehydes and from phosphoryldithioformates but have obtained EPR evidence that thioacyl radicals react with 2-methyl-2-nitrosopropane to give thiocarbonyloxyaminyls rather than thioacyl nitroxides. The results of DFT calculations support this unexpected reactivity of thioacyls, while making questionable their previous EPR identification.  相似文献

77Se-enriched CpNi(bds) (bds = 1,2-benzenediselenolate), has been synthesized and its g tensor and 77Se hyperfine tensors have been obtained from its frozen solution electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectrum. These parameters are consistent with those calculated by density functional theory (DFT); it is shown that 10% of the spin is localized on each selenium and that the direction associated to the maximum 77Se couplings is aligned along the gmin direction, perpendicular to the Ni(bds) plane. EPR measurements and DFT calculations are also carried out on the 77Se enriched complex CpNi(dsit) as well on the two dithiolene analogues CpNi(bdt) and CpNi(dmit). The optimized structures of the isolated CpNi(bds) and CpNi(bdt) complexes have been used to generate the idealized dimers (bds)NiCp...CpNi(bds) and (bdt)NiCp...CpNi(bdt) characterized by Cp...Cp overlap. The exchange parameters J calculated at the DFT level for these systems are in reasonable accord with the experimental values. The influence of the geometry of the dimer on its magnetic properties is assessed by calculating the variation of J as a function of the relative orientation of the two Ni(diselenolene) or Ni(dithiolene) planes.  相似文献

Beta-D-fructose single crystals were in situ X-irradiated at 80 K and measured using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) and ENDOR-induced EPR (EIE) techniques at Q-band (34 GHz) microwave frequencies. The measurements revealed the presence of at least four carbon-centered radicals stable at 80 K. By means of ENDOR angular variations in the three principal crystallographic planes, six proton hyperfine coupling tensors could be determined and were assigned to four different radicals by the aid of EIE. Two of the radicals exhibit only beta-proton hyperfine couplings and reveal almost identical EIE spectra. For the other two radicals, the major hyperfine splitting originates from a single alpha-proton hyperfine coupling and their EIE spectra were also quite similar. The similarity of the EIE spectra and hyperfine tensors led to the assumption that there are only two essentially different radical structures. The radical exhibiting only beta-proton hyperfine couplings was assigned to a C3 centered radical arising from H3 abstraction and the other radical suggested to be an open-ring species with a disrupted C2-C3 bond and a double C2-O2 bond. A possible formation mechanism for the latter open-ring radical is presented. By means of cluster density functional theory (DFT) calculations, the structures of the two radicals were determined and a fairly good agreement between the calculated and experimental hyperfine tensors was found.  相似文献

The radicals obtained in trehalose dihydrate single crystals after 77 K X-irradiation have been investigated at the same temperature using X-band electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR), and ENDOR-induced EPR (EIE) techniques. Five proton hyperfine coupling tensors were unambiguously determined from the ENDOR measurements and assigned to three carbon-centered radical species (T1, T1*, and T2) based on the EIE spectra. EPR angular variations revealed the presence of four additional alkoxy radical species (T3 to T6) and allowed determination of their g tensors. Using periodic density functional theory (DFT) calculations, T1/T1*, T2, and T3 were identified as H-loss species centered at C4, C1', and O2', respectively. The T4 radical is proposed to have the unpaired electron at O4, but considerable discrepancies between experimental and calculated HFC values indicate it is not simply the (net) H-loss species. No suitable models were found for T5 and T6. These exhibit a markedly larger g anisotropy than T3 and T4, which were not reproduced by any of our DFT calculations.  相似文献

Various density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio MP2 and CCSD methods were employed in calculations of arsenic isotropic and anisotropic hyperfine parameters in three small radicals, AsH(2), AsO(2), and H(2)AsO. Convergent basis sets for these calculations were specially derived starting from Dunning's correlation-consistent sets. DFT methods proved to be particularly appropriate choice, because the results obtained with the suitable functionals are in accordance with the available experimental values. Additionally, mechanisms of hyperfine couplings were investigated by examining individual orbital contributions to spin density. The spin polarization mechanism in AsH(2) was studied by evaluating one- and two-electron integrals in spin-restricted and unrestricted case. Apart from nonrelativistic, scalar-relativistic Douglas-Kroll-Hess DFT calculations were performed to examine relativistic impacts on spin density distribution.  相似文献

In order to find a reliable and efficient calculation scheme for electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopic parameters for transition metal complexes in ionic solids from first principles, periodic and finite cluster-in-vacuo density functional theory (DFT) simulations are performed for g tensors, ligand hyperfine tensors (A), and quadrupole tensors (Q) for Rh(2+)-related centers in NaCl. EPR experiments on NaCl:Rh single crystals identified three Rh(2+) monomer centers, only differing in the number of charge compensating vacancies in their local environment, and one dimer center. Periodic and cluster calculations, both based on periodically optimized structures, are able to reproduce experimentally observed trends in the ligand A and Q tensors and render very satisfactory numerical agreement with experiment. Taking also computation time into account as a criterion, a full periodic approach emerges as most appropriate for these parameters. The g tensor calculations, on the other hand, prove to be insufficiently accurate for model assessment. The calculations also reveal parameters of the complexes which are not directly accessible through experiments, in particular related to their geometry.  相似文献

Several representatives of natural flavonoids and their synthetic nitro‐derivatives have been investigated by polarography and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy under electrochemical reduction in acetonitrile, dimethylformamide (DMF), dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO) or 1,2‐dimethoxyethane. All the compounds studied are reduced in the first stage by one‐electron transfer, apart from flavanone, which accepts two electrons simultaneously. However, the primary radical anions were detected by EPR spectroscopy only for 4′‐nitroflavone. It was shown that radical anions of other flavonoids quickly dimerized. The analysis of the temperature dependence of the hyperfine interaction constants and broadening of lines in EPR spectra of 4′‐nitroflavone radical anions has shown that the distribution of spin density is due to both the change of polarity of the medium and rotation of the nitrophenyl moiety. The assignment of hyperfine structure constants for the 4′‐nitroflavone radical anion was confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

Binuclear, mixed valence copper complexes with a [Cu(+1)(.5), Cu(+1)(.5)] redox state and S = (1)/(2) can be stabilized with rigid azacryptand ligands. In this system the unpaired electron is delocalized equally over the two copper ions, and it is one of the very few synthetic models for the electron mediating Cu(A) site of nitrous oxide reductase and cytochrome c oxidase. The spatial and electronic structures of the copper complex in frozen solution were obtained from the magnetic interactions, namely the g-tensor and the (63,65)Cu, (14)N, (2)H, and (1)H hyperfine couplings, in combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The magnetic interactions were determined from continuous wave (CW) electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), pulsed electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR), two-dimensional TRIPLE, and hyperfine sublevel correlation spectroscopy (HYSCORE) carried out at W-band or/and X-band frequencies. The DFT calculated g and Cu hyperfine values were in good agreement with the experimental values showing that the structure in solution is indeed close to that of the optimized structure. Then, the DFT calculated hyperfine parameters were used as guidelines and starting points in the simulations of the various experimental ENDOR spectra. A satisfactory agreement with the experimental results was obtained for the (14)N hyperfine and quadrupole interactions. For (1)H the DFT calculations gave good predictions for the hyperfine tensor orientations and signs, and they were also successful in reproducing trends in the magnitude of the various proton hyperfine couplings. These, in turn, were very useful for ENDOR signals assignments and served as constraints on the simulation parameters.  相似文献

Pulsed electron nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) and two-dimensional (2D)-hyperfine sublevel correlation spectroscopy (HYSCORE) studies in combination with density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that photo-oxidation of natural zeaxanthin (ex Lycium halimifolium) and violaxanthin (ex Viola tricolor) on silica-alumina produces the carotenoid radical cations (Car*+) and also the neutral carotenoid radicals (#Car*) as a result of proton loss (indicated by #) from the C4(4') methylene position or one of the methyl groups at position C5(5'), C9(9'), or C13(13'), except for violaxanthin where the epoxide at positions C5(5')-C6(6') raises the energy barrier for proton loss, and the neutral radicals #Car*(4) and #Car*(5) are not observed. DFT calculations predict the largest isotropic beta-methyl proton hyperfine couplings to be 8 to 10 MHz for Car*+, in agreement with previously reported hyperfine couplings for carotenoid pi-conjugated radicals with unpaired spin density delocalized over the whole molecule. Anisotropic alpha-proton hyperfine coupling tensors determined from the HYSCORE analysis were assigned on the basis of DFT calculations with the B3LYP exchange-correlation functional and found to arise not only from the carotenoid radical cation but also from carotenoid neutral radicals, in agreement with the analysis of the pulsed ENDOR data. The formation of the neutral radical of zeaxanthin should provide another effective nonphotochemical quencher of the excited state of chlorophyll for photoprotection in the presence of excess light.  相似文献

Differences in O-H bond dissociation enthalpies (ΔBDEs) between the hydroxylamine of (15)N-labeled TEMPONE and 10 N,N-di-tert-alkyl hydroxylamines were determined by EPR. These ΔBDEs, together with the g and a(N) values of the derived nitroxide radicals, are discussed in relation to various geometric, intramolecular dipole/dipole, and steric effects and in relation to the results from DFT calculations. We find that dipole/dipole interactions are the dominant factors in dictating a(N) values and O-H BDEs in all of these structurally similar nitroxides and hydroxylamines, respectively. The importance of including the Boltzmann distribution of conformations for each nitroxide in the a(N) calculations is emphasized.  相似文献

The complexes of copper with histidine exhibit a wide variety of coordination modes in aqueous solution. This stems from the three potential coordination sites of the histidine molecule and the existence of mono- and bis-complexes. The present work concentrates on the determination of the carboxylate binding mode, via the (13)C hyperfine coupling of the carboxyl, in a number of copper complexes in frozen solutions. These are then used as references for the determination of the coordination mode of two zeolite encapsulated complexes. The (13)C hyperfine coupling (sign and magnitude) was determined by a variety of advanced pulsed EPR and electron-nuclear double resonance (ENDOR) techniques carried out at conventional and high magnetic fields. These showed that while the carboxyl (13)C isotropic hyperfine coupling of an equatorially coordinated carboxylate is negative with a magnitude of 3-4 MHz, that of a free carboxylate is small ( approximately 1 MHz) and positive. To rationalize the experimentally determined ligand hyperfine couplings ((1)H and (13)C) and further understand their dependence on the coordination mode and degree of protonation, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out on a number of model complexes, representing the different Cu-histidine complexes studied experimentally. The exchange-correlation functional used for the calculation of the EPR parameters was B3LYP with triple-zeta plus polarization (TZP) quality basis sets. While the polarization agreement between the magnitudes of the calculated and experimental values varied among the various nuclei, sometimes exhibiting deviations of up to 40%, an excellent agreement was found for the sign prediction. This shows the unique advantage of combining high field ENDOR, by which the sign of the hyperfine can often be determined, with DFT predictions for structure determination.  相似文献

We report CW-EPR, ESEEM, and structural NMR results, as well as DFT calculations, on model compounds relevant to the unusual cross-linked Tyr-His (YH) moiety at the active site of the heme-copper oxidases. CW-EPR spectra of an (15)N isotopically labeled 4-methyl-2-(4-methyl-imidazole-1-yl)-phenol radical are nearly identical to those of the natural abundance (14)N compound. We obtain good simulations of these EPR spectra without including hyperfine couplings to the nitrogen nuclei. This implies that the electron distribution of the radical is largely localized on the phenol ring with only a small amount of spin delocalized onto the nitrogens of the imidazole. Using three-pulse ESEEM spectroscopy, we have successfully detected the two imidazole ring nitrogens, one near the "exact cancellation" ESEEM condition and the other more weakly coupled. We assign these to the imino and amino nitrogens, respectively, based on DFT calculations performed on this radical species. The experimental results and the supporting density functional calculations clearly show that the imidazole substituent has only a minor effect on the electronic structure of the substituted phenol radical.  相似文献
