Manipulating thermal conductivities at will plays a crucial role in controlling heat flow. By developing an effective medium theory including periodicity, here we experimentally show that nonuniform media can exhibit quasi-uniform heat conduction. This provides capabilities in proposing Janus thermal illusion and illusion thermal rectification. For the former, we study, via experiment and theory, a big periodic composite containing a small periodic composite with circular or elliptic particles. As a result, we reveal the Janus thermal illusion that describes the whole periodic system with both invisibility illusion along one direction and visibility illusion along the perpendicular direction, which is fundamentally different from the existing thermal illusions for misleading thermal detection. Further, the Janus illusion helps to design two different periodic systems that both work as thermal diodes but with nearly the same temperature distribution, heat fluxes and rectification ratios, thus being called illusion thermal diodes. Such thermal diodes differ from those extensively studied in the literature, and are useful for the areas that require both thermal rectification and thermal camouflage. This work not only opens a door for designing novel periodic composites in thermal camouflage and heat rectification, but also holds for achieving similar composites in other disciplines like electrostatics, magnetostatics, and particle dynamics.  相似文献

An illusion counter-part displays the same scattering far-field pattern as that of a real object. In this paper, for the first time, we demonstrate that such an unreal illusion can be cloaked by an external cloak. This phenomenon shall be called ??cloak an illusion??. We predict the exact gaugino mass relation near the electroweak scale at one loop for gravity mediated supersymmetry breaking in F-theory SU(5) and SO(10) models with UY(1) and U(1)BL fluxes, respectively. The gaugino mass relation introduced here differs from the typical gaugino mass relations studied thus far, and in general, should be preserved quite well at low energy. Therefore, these F-theory models can be tested at the Large Hadron Collider and future International Linear Collider. We present two typical scenarios that satisfy all the latest experimental constraints and are consistent with the CDMS II experiment. In particular, the gaugino mass relation is indeed satisfied at two-loop level with only a very small deviation around the electroweak scale.  相似文献

The Franssen Effect (FE) is a striking auditory illusion previously demonstrated only in humans. To elicit the FE, subjects are presented with two spatially-separated sounds; one a transient tone with an abrupt onset and immediate ramped offset and the other a sustained tone of the same frequency with a ramped onset which remains on for several hundred ms. The FE illusion occurs when listeners localize the tones at the location of the transient signal, even though that sound has ended and the sustained one is still present. The FE illusion occurs most readily in reverberant environments and with pure tones of approximately 1-2.5 kHz in humans, conditions where sound localization is difficult in humans. Here, we demonstrate this illusion in domestic cats using, for the first time, localization procedures. Previous studies in humans employed discrimination procedures, making it difficult to link the FE to sound localization mechanisms. The frequencies for eliciting the FE in cats were higher than in humans, corresponding to frequencies where cats have difficulty localizing pure tones. These findings strengthen the hypothesis that difficulty in accurately localizing sounds is the basis for the FE.  相似文献

We study issues arising in attempts to unify strong and other elementary particle interactions. The proton lifetime is estimated in theories with second-order baryon number violation, and found to be O(103–104) longer than naive dimensional counting suggested. The renormalization of quark and lepton masses below the grand unification mass is considered in some detail. Application is made to the SU(5) model of Georgi and Glashow, and we find strange and bottom quark masses:
ms ≈ 0.4–0.5 GeV, mb ≈ 4.8–5.6 GeV
. Inputs are the values of the strong interactions coupling constant favoured by electroproduction and charmonium analyses, and the observed muon and heavy lepton (τ) masses. These estimates are substantially increased if there are more than six flavours of quark. Symmetry breaking in the SU(5) model is studied, including radiative corrections to the effective Higgs potential.  相似文献

We consider the possibility that the unification of the electroweak interactions and the strong force arises from string theory, at energies significantly lower than the string scale. As a tool, an effective grand unified field theory in six dimensions is derived from an anisotropic orbifold compactification of the heterotic string. It is explicitly shown that all anomalies cancel in the model, though anomalous Abelian gauge symmetries are present locally at the boundary singularities. In the supersymmetric vacuum additional interactions arise from higher‐dimensional operators. We develop methods that relate the couplings of the effective theory to the location of the vacuum, and find that unbroken discrete symmetries play an important role for the phenomenology of orbifold models. An efficient algorithm for the calculation of the superpotential to arbitrary order is developed, based on symmetry arguments. We furthermore present a correspondence between bulk fields of the orbifold model in six dimensions, and the moduli fields that arise from compactifying four internal dimensions on a manifold with non‐trivial gauge background.  相似文献

A mechanism is pointed out to generate cosmological baryon number excess without resorting to grand unified theories. We sharpen constraints related to hypercharge flux in F-theory grand unified theories that possess U(1) symmetries and argue that they arise as a consequence of four-dimensional anomaly cancellation. This gives a physical explanation for all restrictions that were observed in spectral cover models while demonstrating that the phenomenological implications for a well-motivated set of models are not tied to any particular formalism.  相似文献

If a grand unified theory with a compact group G is spontaneously broken to H, magnetic monopoles are created. The fate of such an H-monopole under a subsequent breaking to KH is shown to depend on the behaviour of its non-Abelian charge Q introduced by Goddard, Nuyts, and Olive: if Q belongs to the Lie algebra k of K, the monopole survives: if Q can be H-rotated to k, it can be converted. A necessary condition for an H-monopole to survive is that its Higgs charges satisfy a topological constraint.  相似文献

We introduce a dual lifting of unified gauge theories, the first characterized by theisotopies, which are axiom-preserving maps into broader structures with positive-definite generalized units used for the representation of matter under the isotopies of the Poincaré symmetry, and the second characterized by theisodualities, which are anti-isomorphic maps with negative-definite generalized units used for the representation of antimatter under the isodualities of the Poincaré symmetry. We then submit, apparently for the first time, a novel grand unification with the inclusion of gravity for matter embedded in the generalized positive-definite units of unified gauge theories while gravity for antimatter is embedded in the isodual isounit. We then show that the proposed grand unification provides realistic possibilities for a resolution of the axiomatic incompatibilities between gravitation and electroweak interactions due to curvature, antimatter and the fundamental space-time symmetries.  相似文献
