We analyse the impact of systematic effects due to the scale dependence of QCD corrections in combination with the use of different jet clustering algorithms in the measurement of the W± mass in the fully hadronic decay mode of W+W pairs produced at LEP2. We consider higher order contributions induced by both virtual and real gluon radiation onto the electroweak CC03 and CC11 channels through (αs) at the parton level. We find that the associated uncertainties can be of order 100 MeV, thus competitive with those possibly arising in the non-perturbative regime and indeed above the current experimental estimates.Work supported in part by the Ministero dell’Università e della Ricerca Scientifica and by the European Union under contract HPRN-CT-2000-00149.  相似文献

The results from various dijet distributions in proton?Cproton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, with 2010 and 2011 data from the CMS experiment, are presented. The measurements of the dijet mass spectra, centrality ratio, azimuthal decorrelation and angular distribution are shown. Sensitivity of the phenomenological parameters used to model different event generators is also investigated. Prospects for observing evidence for new physics in these distributions are presented.  相似文献

It is shown that the elliptic flow can be successfully described in the colour string picture with fusion and percolation provided anisotropy of particle emission from the fused string is taken into account. Two possible sources of this anisotropy are considered, propagation of the string in the transverse plane and quenching of produced particles in the strong colour field of the string. Calculations show that the second source gives an overwhelming contribution to the flow at accessible energies. We obtain an almost equal elliptic flow dependence on p T for the LHC and RHIC energies in agreement with the recent ALICE data.  相似文献

A search for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons in pp collisions at the LHC at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV is presented. The analysis is performed on a dataset corresponding to 1.66 fb?1 of data recorded in 2011 by the CMS experiment. Limits are set on the cross-section of a Standard Model Higgs boson decaying into two photons, and on the cross-section of a fermiophobic Higgs boson decaying into two photons.  相似文献

The powerful muon and tracker systems of the CMS detector together with dedicated reconstruction software allow precise and efficient measurement of muon tracks originating from proton-proton collisions. The standard muon reconstruction algorithms, however, are inadequate to deal with muons that do not originate from collisions. This note discusses the design, implementation, and performance results of a dedicated cosmic muon track reconstruction algorithm, which features pattern recognition optimized for muons that are not coming from the interaction point, i.e., cosmic muons and beam-halo muons. To evaluate the performance of the new algorithm, data taken during Cosmic Challenge phases I and II were studied and compared with simulated cosmic data. In addition, a variety of more general topologies of cosmic muons and beam-halo muons were studied using simulated data to demonstrate some key features of the new algorithm.  相似文献

The measurement of t-channel single top cross-section in proton?Cproton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV, using data collected with the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment during the year 2010 is presented. Both the electron-neutrino and muon-neutrino decay channels of W boson from top decay are considered. Two complementary multivariate analysis methods to separate signal and background and to extract the cross-section for the single top produced in t-channel are explored. A jet reconstruction algorithm is developed for events with a high particle density in the calorimetric system. The performance of the reconstruction of hard QCD jets with initial parton energies 50–300 GeV is studied in central Pb–Pb collisions with a modified cone jet finder which includes an algorithm for event-by-event background subtraction. The heavy ion background is simulated using the HIJING Monte Carlo generator with . Results on the achieved jet reconstruction efficiency, purity, energy and spatial resolution are presented.  相似文献

In-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy, carried out at the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics in the recent past, using heavy-ion projectiles from the pelletron accelerator centres in the country and multi-detector arrays have yielded significant data on the structure of a large number of nuclei spanning different mass regions. The experiments included the study of two-fold γγ-coincidence events for establishing decay schemes, directional correlation of oriented nuclei (DCO) for help in spin assignments and Doppler shift attenuation for lifetime information. The studies have led to the observation of rotational sequences of states in nuclei near closed shell in the mass A=110 region, vibrational spectra in nuclei with A ∼ 60, interplay between single-particle and collective modes of excitation in the doubly-odd bromine isotopes, decoupled bands with large quadrupole deformation in 77Br, shape transition with rotational frequency within a band in 135Pm and octupole collectivity in 153Eu. Particle-rotor-model and cranked-shell-model calculations have been carried out to provide an understanding of the underlying nuclear structure.  相似文献

Nontrivial geometrical effects in relativistic central collisions of deformed nuclei are studied using a simple version of the optical Glauber model. For very small impact parameters, large centrality and eccentricity fluctuations are observed. In very high-multiplicity collisions of oblate nuclei, a significant fraction of events with nonzero elliptic-flow strength υ 2 proportional to oblateness parameter −β 2 is predicted.
