Nucleophilic vinylic substitutions of 4H-pyran-4-one and 2-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one with ammonia were calculated by the B3LYP method using the 6-31G(d,p) basis set. Bulk solvent effects of aqueous
solution were estimated by the polarized continuum and Poisson–Boltzmann self-consistent reaction field models using the 6-311+G(d,p)
basis set. In the gas phase different mechanisms were found for the two reaction systems calculated. The reaction of 4H-pyran-4-one proceeds through enol, whereas a feasible path for the less reactive 2-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one is the mechanism through a keto intermediate. Addition of ammonia in concert with proton transfer is the rate-determining
step ofthe reaction. The mechanism proceeding either by a bimolecular nucleophilic substitution (SN2) or by one involving a tetrahedral zwitterionic intermediate is shown to be unlikely in the gas phase or nonpolar solution.
The effects of bulk solvent not only consist in a reduction of the various activation barriers by about 25–40 kJ mol−1 but also in a change in the reaction mechanism.

The reaction of the di-O-trimethylsilyl derivative of 2-hydroxynicotinic acid with methyl phosphodichloridite afforded 2-methoxy-1,3,2-dioxaphosphorino[4,5-b]pyridin-4(4H )-one. The NMR spectrkscopic data suggest that the reaction of the latter with hexafluoroacetone produces unstable 2-methoxy-2,5-dioxo-4,4-bis(trifluoromethyl)-4,5-dihydro-1,3,2-dioxaphosphepino[4,5-b]pyridine, which is readily transformed into 9-methyl-2,5-dioxo-4,4- bis(trifluoromethyl)-4,5-dihydro-1,3,2-dioxaphosphepino[4,5-b]pyrid-9-inium-2-oate. The structure of the hydrolysis product of the latter, viz., 1-methyl-3-(2-hydroxy-3,3,3-trifluoro-2- trifluoromethylpropanoyl)pyridin-2-one, was established by X-ray diffraction analysis.Published in Russian in Izvestiya Akademii Nauk.

A new and effective procedure was developed for the synthesis of 3-ethylquinoxalin-2(1H)-one from o-phenylenediamine and ethyl 2-oxobutanoate. The latter was prepared by the Grignard reaction of diethyl oxalate with ethylmagnesium bromide or iodide. The ethyl group in 3-ethylquinoxalin-2(1H)-one can readily be converted into various functional groups: α-bromoethyl, α-thiocyanato, α-azidoethyl, α-phenylaminoethyl, acetyl, and bromoacetyl. 2-Polyfluoroalkylchromene-4(4H)-thiones, synthesized from 2-polyfluoroalkylchromones and P2S5, react with aniline, phenylhydrazines, and hydroxylamine at the C(4) atom and afford corresponding anils, phenylhydrazones, and oximes of chromones. A method is developed for the preparation of 4-(vic-triazol-1-yl)indoles that involves replacement of the ortho-NO2 group in E-2,4,6-trinitrostilbenes by an azido group, condensation of E-2-azido-4,6-dinitrostilbenes with acetylacetone, replacement of the second ortho-NO2 group in the resulting stilbenes by N3, and subsequent thermolysis of the azide into the target indole. The reactions of E-2-azido-4,6-dinitrostilbenes with cyclohexane-1,3-dione gave E-2-amino-4,6-dinitrostilbenes, which can be used for selective transformation of the ortho-NO2 group into an amino group in E-2,4,6-trinitrostilbenes.

3-Substituted 1H,5H-naphtho[1,8-ef][1,3]dithiocines (R = H, Me, Ph, t-Bu) were oxidized with m-chloroperoxybenzoic acid to the corresponding 2-oxides having trans configuration (R ≠ H). According to the 1H and 13C NMR data (including NOESY experiments), the disubstituted compounds at room temperature exist in a boat conformation with equatorial orientation of the substituent on C3 and oxygen atom on S2. Heating of 5-acetyl-4-aminopyrimidine derivatives with ethyl acetoacetate, ethyl benzoylacetate, and diethyl acetone-1, 3-dicarboxylate in the absence of a base gave the corresponding 6-acylpyrido[2, 3-d]pyrimidin-7(8H)-ones. Under analogous conditions, the reaction with ethyl malonate afforded ethyl 7-oxo-7, 8-dihydropyrido[2, 3-d]pyrimidine-6-carboxylates. The reaction of 6-acetyl-5-hydroxyacenaphthene with methylhydrazine afforded 1,3-dimethyl-1H-6,7-dihydroacenaphtho[5,6-de]pyridazine. Its dehydrogenation with chloranil gave 1,3-dimethyl-1H-acenaphtho[5,6-de]pyridazine, which is a heteroaromatic compound with an essentially new topology of the ρsystem. The reaction of 3-methyl-1H-6,7-dihydroacenaphtho[5,6-de]pyridazine with 3,5-di-tert-butyl-1,2-benzoquinone yielded a dimer containing the acenaphthene and acenaphthylene moieties of peri-annelated 1H-1,2-diazines connected in positions 1′ and 9.__________Published in Russian in Izvestiya Akademii Nauk. accompanied by the pyrimidine ring closure on refluxing in an excess of sodium methoxide to form bicyclic products, viz., quinazolin-4-one, pyrido[2,3-d]pyrimidin-4-one, and pyrido[4,3-d]pyrimidin-4-one derivatives. The scheme of cyclization processes was proposed. The structures of the reaction products were
confirmed by a number of physicochemical data, including X-ray diffraction analysis.

5-Fluoroquinazoline-2,4-diones and their 2-thio analogs were obtained from 6-fluoroanthranilic acid. Two convenient routes
to 5-fluoroquinazolin-4-ones involved cyclocondensation of 6-fluoroanthranilamide with acid chlorides (anhydrides) or with
aromatic (heterocyclic) aldehydes. A method for the synthesis of 7-fluoroquinazolin-4-one from 2,4-difluorobenzoic acid was
proposed.
