The adsorption of cationic and amphoteric copolymers onto controlled pore glass (CPG) powders has been studied by measurement of the powder particle zeta (zeta) potential, by determination of the adsorption isotherm, and by FT Raman measurements of the polymer-coated powder. The cationic polymers consisted chiefly of homopolymers of dimethyldiallylammonium chloride (DMDAAC) or copolymers of DMDAAC and acrylamide. The amphoteric polymers studied included copolymers of DMDAAC and acrylic acid. The comonomer ratio was varied to explore the dependence of cationic charge density on the extent and effect of adsorption. Both types of polymers adsorb onto the anionic glass surface via an ion-exchange mechanism. Consequently, a correspondingly higher mass of a low-charge-density copolymer adsorbs than of a cationic homopolymer. The presence of the anionic portion in the amphoteric polymers does not significantly alter this picture. The zeta potential, however, reflects the overall nature of the polymer. Cationic polymers effectively neutralize the glass surface, while amphoteric polymers leave the zeta potential net negative. Adsorption isotherms, determined via the depletion technique using colloidal titration, were used to "calibrate" a FT Raman method. The latter was used to determined the amount of adsorbed polymer under solution conditions in which colloidal titration could not be performed.  相似文献

In order to elucidate the mechanisms of flocculation by polymer mixtures, the effect of adsorption of non-ionic poly(ethylene oxide) — PEO, two samples of strongly (SNF FO 4800) and medium charged (SNF FO 4350) cationic and two samples of medium (SNF AN 935) and weakly charged (SNF AN 905) anionic polyelectrolytes (PE) as well as their binary mixtures on the electrokinetic potential of bentonite and kaolin particles has been studied. It is shown that in the presence of PEO-anionic/cationic polymer mixture, the electrokinetic potential of particles is determined by the adsorption of the polyelectrolyte; neither cationic nor anionic segments can be displaced by the non-ionic polymer. In mixtures of cationic and anionic polyelectrolytes, the ζ-potential of particles is determined by the adsorbed amount of anionic polymer independently of the charge density of PE and way of addition of the mixture components to the suspension, i.e. (1) first adding the cationic polymer, then the anionic one, or (2) first adding the anionic polymer then the cationic one, or (3) adding an increasing amount of pre-prepared 1: 1 mixture. The highest absolute ζ-potential values are observed for pH 7.5 when the surface of bentonite or kaolin particles is “purely” negatively charged and the anionic PE layer is most extended because of few contacts to the surface. With decreasing the pH, the (negative) ζ-potential of particles decreases due to appearance of a small amount of positive charges on the surface that bond an increasing amount of negative segments and results in shrinking of the adsorbed layer of the anionic PE. It is shown also that the electrokinetic potential of particles in anionic and cationic PE mixtures at all studied pH (4, 5, and 7.5) depends on the spatial distribution of negatively charged segments near the surface. The regularities observed are explained by formation of long loops and tails of anionic segments on the surface because of the small number of contacts to the surface; the cationic polyelectrolyte forms on the surface a thin layer with a big number of contacts and which is hidden behind the more extended anionic polymer layer.  相似文献

Novel polymer biomaterials, which can be used in contact with blood, are prepared with strong inspiration from the surface structure of cell membranes. That is, the polymers with a phospholipid polar group in the side chain, 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) polymers were synthesized. The MPC polymers can inhibit surface-induced clot formation effectively, when they are in contact with blood even in the absence of an anticoagulant. This phenomenon was due to the reduction of plasma protein and suppression of denaturation of adsorbed proteins, that is the MPC polymers interact with blood components very mildly. As the molecular structure of the MPC polymer was easily designed by changing the monomer units and their composition, it could be applied to surface modification of artificial organs and biomedical devices for improving blood and tissue compatibility. Thus, the MPC polymers are useful polymer biomaterials for manufacturing high performance artificial organs and biomedical devices to provide safe medical treatments.  相似文献

The effect pH, ionic strength (KCl concentration), weakly and medium charged anionic and cationic polyelectrolytes (PEs) as well as their binary mixtures on the electrokinetic potential of silica particles as a function of the polyelectrolyte/mixture dose, its composition, charge density (CD) of the PE, and way of adding the polymers to the suspension has been studied. It has been shown that addition of increasing amount of anionic PEs increases the absolute value of the negative zeta-potential of particles at pH > pH isoelectric point (IEP = 2.5); this increase is stronger the charge density of the polyelectrolyte is higher. Adsorption of cationic polyelectrolytes at these pH values gives a significant decrease in the negative ζ-potential and overcharging the particles; changes in the ζ-potential are more pronounced for PE samples with higher CD. In mixtures of cationic and anionic PE at pH > pHIEP, the ζ-potential of particles is determined by the adsorbed amount of the anionic polymer independently of the CD of PEs, the mixture composition and the sequence of addition of the mixture components. Unexpectedly, the ζ-potential of silica at pH = 2.1, i.e. < pHIEP, turned out to be positive in the presence of both anionic PE and cationic + anionic PE mixtures. This is explained by formation (and adsorption onto positively charged silica surface) of pseudo-cationic PEs from anionic ones due to transfer of protons from the solution to the amino-group of the anionic polymer. Considerations about the role of coulombic and non-coulombic forces in the mechanism of PE adsorption are presented.  相似文献

Polyester fabric (poly(ethylene terephthalate)) is a hydrophobic polymer. Its hydrophobic nature can be a disadvantage for certain applications like dyeing, finishing, detergency, etc. Physical or chemical modification of the polyester to make it more hydrophilic is therefore desirable for certain performance characteristics. Surface modification of polyester to make it hydrophilic can be achieved by adsorbing polymers on the polyester surface. Starch is a commonly available, hydrophilic polymer used in many textile applications that can be used to modify polyester. However, it needs to be chemically modified so that it can adsorb on the polyester fabric and physically modify the fabric characteristics. The polymers used in this study are two different modified starches—cationic and anionic starches and mixtures of the two. The adsorption kinetics on a polyester substrate was studied. The effect of charge and hydrophobicity on adsorption was investigated. Cationic starches were shown to readily adsorb on polyester and this was attributed to electrostatic interactions. Hydrophobic substituents on the cationic moiety resulted in increased adsorption. This was attributed to the weak hydrophobic interaction between the polymer chains which could result in a more coiled polymer conformation. It is hypothesized that more starch molecules are required for surface coverage of the polyester, resulting in an increase in adsorption. Anionic starch was adsorbed on the substrate but at a slower rate than the cationic starches. It is likely that there is a H bonding between acid groups on the starch and the ester groups of the polyester. However, the anionic starch is desorbed when the polyester is placed in an aqueous medium. When a blend of cationic starch and anionic starch was used, a low concentration of anionic starch was seen to increase adsorption, indicating that the polyelectrolyte complex itself may be adsorbing on the substrate. Further increases cause a decrease in adsorption as no sites may be available on the complex for adsorption. When hydrophobic substituents are present, addition of the anionic starch causes a decrease in adsorption at all concentrations. This was attributed to the “crosslinking” between the hydrophobically modified starch and the anionic polymer.  相似文献

At the nanoscale, methods to measure surface charge can prove challenging. Herein we describe a general method to report surface charge through the measurement of ion current rectification of a nanopipette brought in close proximity to a charged substrate. This method is able to discriminate between charged cationic and anionic substrates when the nanopipette is brought within distances from ten to hundreds of nanometers from the surface. Further studies of the pH dependence on the observed rectification support a surface-induced mechanism and demonstrate the ability to further discriminate between cationic and nominally uncharged surfaces. This method could find application in measurement and mapping of heterogeneous surface charges and is particularly attractive for future biological measurements, where noninvasive, noncontact probing of surface charge will prove valuable.  相似文献

The surface of a titanium (Ti) alloy substrate was modified by a simple and quick process using a water-soluble polymer, and the effects of 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl (DHP) groups in the polymer side chain on the modification process were examined. The polymers (PMDP) composed of both 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) unit and 3,4-dihydroxyphenyl methacrylate unit were synthesized for surface anchoring. The Ti alloy substrate was coated with PMDP using an aqueous solution of the polymer. A PMDP layer with a thickness of 20 nm was formed on the Ti alloy substrate simply by dip coating for 10 s without drying. Even when the Ti alloy substrate with PMDP coating was immersed in the aqueous medium for 1 week, no change in the thickness was observed, i.e., the PMDP layer was bound to the surface very stably. Oxidation of the DHP groups reduced the stability of the polymer layer significantly. Thus, the DHP groups play a significant role in achieving stable binding. Protein was adsorbed on the Ti alloy substrate; however, this was not observed for the PMDP-coated Ti alloy substrate. In conclusion, we confirmed the effects of DHP groups in PMDP on the stability of the coating on the Ti alloy substrate. Moreover, we found that surface treatment using PMDP was simple, quick, and reliable, and thus, it has great potential for improving biofouling of Ti alloy substrates used in medical devices.  相似文献

In this study the interactions between a cationic polymer and an anionic cyclodextrin were investigated. The system has the potential for use in a sustained release dosage forms for use on mucous membranes. As mucous membranes are negatively charged the objective of this study was to investigate whether a drug delivery system based on a cationic polymer and an anionic cyclodextrin would be more mucoadhesive than a system containing a cationic polymer and a neutral cyclodextrin. For this purpose the cationic polymer hexadimethrine bromide (HDMBr) and anionic sulfobutylether -cyclodextrin (SBECD) were utilized as well as the neutral hydroxypropyl-cyclodextrin (HPCD). Triclosan was used as a model drug. The drug delivery system was formulated as a solution or semi-solid and its adhesion to porcine buccal mucosa and cation exchange media was measured. In addition the release of triclosan from the system was quantified. No difference was observed between the two systems when they were applied to the mucosal surface. However, the formulations showed improved adhesion, compared to the neutral cyclodextrin/drug delivery system, when they could also reach the underlying surface of the excised tissue. The drug delivery system was much better retained on the cation exchange media than the uncharged system. Significant interactions were observed between the negatively charged cyclodextrin and the positively charged polymer. The results indicate that the interactions could be used to obtain a mucoadhesive sustained drug delivery system under certain circumstances. The positive charge of HDMBr did not have the expected effect on the buccal mucosa and it can be concluded that although a positive charge is likely to promote mucoadhesion, other attributes of polymers, such as molecular weight and viscosity, may have equally beneficial effect.  相似文献

Surface modification of polymer materials for preparing microfluidic devices including poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) was investigated with phospholipids polymers such as poly(2-methacryloyloxylethyl phosphorylcholine(MPC)-co-n-butyl methacrylate) (PMB) and poly(MPC-co-2-ethylhexyl methacrylate-co-2-(N,N-dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate) (PMED). The hydrophilicity of every surface on the polymer materials modified with these MPC polymers increased and the value of zeta-potential became close to zero. The protein adsorption on the polymer materials with and without the surface modification was evaluated using a protein mixture of human plasma fibrinogen and serum albumin. Amount of proteins adsorbed on these polymeric materials showed significant reduction by the surface modification with the MPC polymers compared to the uncoated surfaces ranging from 56 to 90%. Furthermore, we successfully prepared PDMS-based microchannel which was modified by simple coating with the PMB and PMED. The modified microchannel also revealed a significant reduction of adsorption of serum albumin. We conclude that the MPC polymers are useful for reducing unfavorable protein adsorption on microfluidic devices.  相似文献

Adsorption of the cationic polymers poly(methacrylamidopropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride) (PMAPTAC) and poly(1,1-dimethylpiperidinium-3,5-diallylmethylene chloride) (PDMPDAMC) on human hair was studied by measurements of the amount of polymer adsorbed and by the streaming potential method. Results reflect the amphoteric nature of the keratin surface and show that the excess of anionic sites at pH values above 4 is the main driving force for the adsorption of cationic polyelectrolytes. Lowering the pH below 4 or addition of neutral salt (KCl) reduces the amount of adsorbed polymer. It was shown that the adsorption of cationic polymer in the concentration range 0.01 to 0.1 % and at neutral pH reverses the overall character of the surface from anionic to cationic. Keratin fibers modified in this manner do not exhibit amphoteric character and bear excess positive charge in the pH range 2–9.5. The value of the amount of the polymer adsorbed at saturation concentration (2 mg/g) as well as the lack of molecular weight effect in the range (5 · 104 – 106) on the amount of polymer adsorbed suggest that polymer chains adopt a rather extended conformation on the fiber surface. Some data concerning the formation of a complex between adsorbed cationic polymer and anionic detergents or polyelectrolytes are also presented.  相似文献

A stable polyelectrolyte multilayer (PEM) coating was investigated for use in open-tubular capillary electrochromatography (o-CEC). In this approach, the PEM consisted of the cationic polymer of a quaternary ammonium salt, poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) and the anionic polymeric surfactant, poly(sodium undecylenic sulfate). Both the cationic and anionic polymers were physically adsorbed to the surface of a fused-silica capillary by use of a simple coating procedure. This procedure involved an alternate rinse of the positively and negatively charged polymers. The performance of the PEM coating as a dynamic stationary phase was evaluated by use of electrochromatographic experiments and showed good selectivity for both phenols and benzodiazepines. Reproducibility of the PEM coating was also evaluated by calculating the relative standard deviations (RSDs) of the electroosomotic flow (EOF). The run-to-run and capillary-to-capillary RSD values of the EOF were less than 1.5%. The endurance of the coating was more than 100 runs. The importance of the PEM coating was illustrated by comparing separations on a bare uncoated capillary with the coated capillary. In addition, the chromatographic performance using o-CEC and micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) was compared for the separation of benzodiazepines.  相似文献

Exfoliated graphene particles stabilised by the cationic polyelectrolyte polyethyleneimine (PEI) were used in conjunction with an anionic polyelectrolyte, poly(acrylic acid), to construct multilayers using the layer-by-layer technique on a silica substrate. In the first adsorption step, the surface excess of the cationic graphene was dependent on the overall charge on the nanoparticle which in turn can be tuned through modifying solution pH as PEI has weakly ionisable charged amine groups. The adsorbed amount onto the silica surface increased as the solution pH increased. Subsequently, a layer of PAA was adsorbed on top of the cationic graphene through electrostatic interaction. The multilayer could be assembled through this alternate deposition, with the influence of solution conditions investigated. The pH of the adsorbing solutions was the chief determinant of the overall adsorbed amounts, with more mass added at the elevated pH of 9 in comparison with pH 4. Atomic force microscopy confirmed that the graphene particles were adsorbed to the silica interface and that the surface coverage of the disc-like nanoparticles was complete after the deposition of five graphene-polyelectrolyte bi-layers. Furthermore, the graphene nanoparticles themselves could be modified through the consecutive addition of the oppositely charged polymers. A multilayered assembly of negatively charged graphene sheets modified with a bi-layer of PEI and PAA was also deposited on a silica surface with adsorbed PEI.  相似文献

Successive adsorption of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes, namely, cationic and anionic acrylamide copolymers, on a solid phase surface from solutions with high ionic strength is investigated. The constants of the Freundlich equation are calculated for the adsorption of different polymers. The interrelation between the adsorption values of polymers and their flocculation activity with respect to clay-salt suspensions is determined. The successive adsorption of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes strongly affects the flocculation due to the formation of polyelectrolyte complexes on the surface of clay particles. The mechanism for complexation is proposed.  相似文献

The adhesion of filamentous microbial cells such as Trichoderma reesei was studied by using carriers covered with polymers which were prepared by the radiation polymerization of ionic monomers. The weight of the cells adhering to the carriers increased with increasing cationic monomer content, indicating that the surface of the polymers prepared from cationic and hydrophobic monomers is suitable for the adhesion of the cells. The production of cellulase in the cells adhered to polymers from cationic monomers was higher than that in cells adhered to polymers prepared from anionic monomers. The growth of the cells adhered to the surfaces of the polymers was affected by the hydrophilicity of the polymers.  相似文献

Precipitation or coprecipitation of polyelectrolytes has been largely investigated. However, the precipitation of polyelectrolytes via addition of charged and non‐charged surfactants has not been systematically studied and reported. Consequently, the aim of this work is to investigate the effect of different surfactants (anionic, cationic, non‐charged and zwitterionic) on the precipitation of cationic and anionic polymethylmethacrylate polymers (Eudragit). The surfactants effect has been investigated as a function of their concentration. Special attention has been dedicated to the CMC range and to the colloidal characterization of the formed dispersions. Moreover, the effect of salt (NaCl) and pH was also addressed. It is pointed out that non‐ionic and zwitterionic surfactants do not interact with charged Eudragit E100 and L100. For oppositely charged Eudragit E100/SDS and Eudragit L100/CTAB, precipitation occurs, and the obtained dispersions have been characterized in terms of particle size distribution and zeta potential. It was established that the binding of SDS molecules to Eudragit E100 polymer chains is made through the negative charges of the surfactant heads under the CMC value whereas binding of CTAB to Eudragit L100 chains is made at a CTAB concentration 5 times above its CMC. For Eudragit E100/SDS system, a more acidic medium induces aggregation. A same result was observed for the Eudragit L100/CTAB at a more basic pH. Moreover, it was observed that increasing salt concentration (higher than 100 mM) led to aggregation as generally observed for polycations/anionic surfactant systems.  相似文献

Two cationic polymers with similar composition were prepared by two different polymerization methods. By monitoring the evolution of the molar mass and chemical composition during the reactions together with charge density measurements and calculations, it was concluded that the cationic polymer synthesized by emulsion polymerization had a less uniform compositional distribution than the cationic polymer prepared by solution polymerization. Contributing to the heterogeneity was the hydrolysis of one monomer (dimethylamino ethylmethacrylate (DMAEMA)) during the synthesis. As a result, the polymer prepared by emulsion polymerization had a more blocky structure and was more surface active as supported by static and dynamic surface tensions data. Fluorescence experiments showed that both polymers formed aggregates at very low concentrations of approximately 0.01 wt%. The aggregates of the polymer prepared by emulsion polymerization were compact, whereas the solution polymerization-based polymer aggregates exhibited a rather expanded geometry.  相似文献

Cell electrophoretic mobility (EPM) can be used to characterize individual cells. The purpose of this study is to establish reproducible and reliable cell EPM values obtained using microcapillary electrophoresis (microCE) chips. We studied cell electrophoresis on microCE chips through the comprehensive measurement of EPM and zeta potential. The inner wall of microchannels in microCE chips was coated with three kinds of reagents, namely bovine serum albumin (BSA), gelatin, and 2-methacryloyloxyethylphosphorylcholine (MPC) polymer to prevent nonspecific adhesion and interaction between cells and the inner wall. Electrophoresis was conducted in phosphate-buffered saline (pH 4-9) using erythrocytes extracted from sheep whole blood. Electroosmotic flow (EOF) mobility was measured using noncharged particles, and then the true EPM was calculated by subtracting the EOF mobility from the electromigration. MPC polymer coatings in microCE chips reduced the zeta potential of the inner wall and fully prevented nonspecific adhesion. EPM data obtained using microCE chips were almost the same and reproducible over a wide range of pH irrespective of the coating reagent used. In conclusion, reliability in the measurement of cell EPM using microCE chips was realized.  相似文献

The interaction between organic latex polymers and the surface of hydrating cement was investigated by measuring the zeta potential and adsorbed amount of polymer on cement. First, differently charged model latex particles were synthesized in aqueous media by well-known emulsion polymerization technique. The latex polymers were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM). Electrokinetic latex surface properties were investigated by means of streaming potential measurements using a particle charge detector (PCD). It is shown that the anionic latexes adsorb a considerable amount of Ca2+ from the cement pore solution. Next, adsorption of the latex polymers on the surface of hydrating cement was confirmed by zeta potential measurements using the electroacoustic method. A water to cement ratio in the cement paste as low as 0.5 was studied, representing actual conditions in mortar and concrete. Additionally, adsorption isotherms were determined in a sedimentation test using the depletion method. For all latex polymers, Langmuir type adsorption isotherms were found. The latex dosages required to achieve saturated adsorption on the cement surface obtained from zeta potential measurements correspond well with those determined in the sedimentation test. Electron microscopy photographs confirm that the charged latex polymers adsorb selectively on surface areas of hydrating cement showing opposite charge. This way, domains of organic latex polymers exist on the cement surface. They provide adhesion between the inorganic cement matrix and the organic polymer film formed later on by particle coalescence as a result of cement hydration and drying.  相似文献
