The wormlike micelles formed with the surfactant pentaoxyethylene decyl ether C10E5 containing n-dodecanol were characterized by static (SLS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments. The SLS results have been analyzed with the aid of the light scattering theory for micelle solutions, thereby yielding the molar mass Mw(c) as a function of concentration c along with the cross-sectional diameter d of the micelle. The observed Kc/DeltaR0 as a function of c and the hydrodynamic radius RH as functions of Mw have been well described by the theories for the wormlike spherocylinder model. It has also been demonstrated that the apparent hydrodynamic radius RH,app(c) as a function of c is well described by a fuzzy cylinder theory which takes into account the hydrodynamic and direct collision interactions among micelles. Our previous results for the hexaoxyethylene dodecyl ether C12E6 micelles containing n-dodecanol were reanalyzed in the same scheme. It has been found that the micellar length increases with increasing concentration c or with raising temperature T irrespective of the composition of the C10E5 + n-dodecanol and C12E6 + n-dodecanol systems. The length of the micelles at fixed c and T steeply increases with increasing weight fraction wd of n-dodecanol in both systems. The growth of the micelles accompanies the increase of the cross-sectional diameter d of the micelles and the results that the surfactant molecules are more densely assembled with increasing wd in order to keep n-dodecanol molecules inside the micelles.  相似文献

Size, shape, and flexibility of micelles of octaoxyethylene tetradecyl C(14)E(8), hexadecyl C(16)E(8), and octadecyl C(18)E(8) ethers in dilute aqueous solutions were determined at finite surfactant concentrations c by static light scattering (SLS) and dynamic light scattering experiments at several temperatures T below the critical points. The SLS results were successfully analyzed with the aid of the thermodynamic theory formulated with wormlike spherocylinder model for SLS of micelle solutions. The analysis yielded the molar mass M(w) of the micelles as a function of c and the cross-sectional diameter d. The hydrodynamic radius R(H) and the radius of gyration S(2)(1/2) of the micelles as functions of M(w) were found to be also well-described by the corresponding theories for the wormlike spherocylinder or wormlike chain models. The results of the stiffness parameter lambda(-1) have revealed that the micelles are far from rigid rods but rather stiff compared with typical flexible polymers and they grow in size with increasing T to greater length for longer hydrophobic chains, i.e., alkyl groups of the surfactants. As the alkyl group becomes longer, the d value increased, while the spacings s between adjacent hexaoxyethylene chains on the micellar surface were found to remain substantially constant.  相似文献

Polymerization of anionic wormlike micelles   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Polymerizable anionic wormlike micelles are obtained upon mixing the hydrotropic salt p-toluidine hydrochloride (PTHC) with the reactive anionic surfactant sodium 4-(8-methacryloyloxyoctyl)oxybenzene sulfonate (MOBS). Polymerization captures the cross-sectional radius of the micelles (approximately 2 nm), induces micellar growth, and leads to the formation of a stable single-phase dispersion of wormlike micellar polymers. The unpolymerized and polymerized micelles were characterized using static and dynamic laser light scattering, small-angle neutron scattering, 1H NMR, and stopped-flow light scattering. Stopped-flow light scattering was also used to measure the average lifetime of the unpolymerized wormlike micelles. A comparison of the average lifetime of unpolymerized wormlike micelles with the surfactant monomer propagation rate was used to elucidate the mechanism of polymerization. There is a significant correlation between the ratio of the average lifetime to the monomer propagation rate and the average aggregation number of the polymerized wormlike micelles.  相似文献

The self-assembly into wormlike micelles of a poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(propylene oxide)-b-poly(ethylene oxide) triblock copolymer Pluronic P84 in aqueous salt solution (2 M NaCl) has been studied by rheology, small-angle X-ray and neutron scattering (SAXS/SANS), and light scattering. Measurements of the flow curves by controlled stress rheometry indicated phase separation under flow. SAXS on solutions subjected to capillary flow showed alignment of micelles at intermediate shear rates, although loss of alignment was observed for high shear rates. For dilute solutions, SAXS and static light scattering data on unaligned samples could be superposed over three decades in scattering vector, providing unique information on the wormlike micelle structure over several length scales. SANS data provided information on even shorter length scales, in particular, concerning "blob" scattering from the micelle corona. The data could be modeled based on a system of semiflexible self-avoiding cylinders with a circular cross-section, as described by the wormlike chain model with excluded volume interactions. The micelle structure was compared at two temperatures close to the cloud point (47 degrees C). The micellar radius was found not to vary with temperature in this region, although the contour length increased with increasing temperature, whereas the Kuhn length decreased. These variations result in an increase of the low-concentration radius of gyration with increasing temperature. This was consistent with dynamic light scattering results, and, applying theoretical results from the literature, this is in agreement with an increase in endcap energy due to changes in hydration of the poly(ethylene oxide) blocks as the temperature is increased.  相似文献

Wormlike micelles of nonionic surfactants pentaoxyethylene decyl ether C(10)E(5) and hexaoxyethylene decyl ether C(10)E(6) in dilute aqueous solutions were characterized by static (SLS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments at several temperatures T below the critical points. The SLS results were analyzed with the aid of the molecular thermodynamic theory for SLS from micelle solutions formulated with the wormlike spherocylinder model, thereby yielding the molar mass M(w) of the micelles as a function of c and the cross-sectional diameter d of 2.6 nm for both C(10)E(5) and C(10)E(6) micelles. It has been found that the micelles grow in size with increasing c and T, following the relation M(w) proportional, variant c(1/2) in conformity with the theoretical prediction for highly extended polymerlike micelles. The hydrodynamic radius R(H) of the micelles as a function of M(w) was found to be also well described by the corresponding theories for the wormlike spherocylinder model. The results of the stiffness parameter lambda(-1) show that both micelles are rather stiff compared with those formed with other polyoxyethylene alkyl ethers C(i)E(j) but far from rigid rods. The values of the spacing s between two adjacent hexaoxyethylene chains on the micellar surface were found to be substantially the same for both micelles.  相似文献

The formation of wormlike micelles in mixed systems of a supramolecular coordination polymer Zn-L2EO4 and a diblock copolymer P2MVP41-b-PEO205 is investigated by light scattering and Cryo-TEM. By direct mixing at a stoichiometric charge ratio, the above mixtures proved to be capable of formation of spherical micelles with a radius of about 25 nm (Yan et al. Angew. Chem., Int. Ed.; 2007, 46, 1807-1809). Lately, we find wormlike micelles with a hydrodynamic radius >150 nm in a mixture with excess positive charge, that is, a negative charge fraction f- < 0.5. The transformation between wormlike and spherical micelles can be realized by variation of the mixing ratio through different protocols. Upon addition of negatively charged Zn-L2EO4 to a mixture with excess positively charged P2MVP41-b-PEO205, most of the wormlike micelles are transformed into spherical ones; upon addition of positively charged P2MVP41-b-PEO205 to a mixture of pure spherical micelles, wormlike micelles can be produced again. The effect of sample preparation protocol, sample history, and concentration on this transformation process is systematically reported in this article. A possible mechanism for the formation of wormlike micelles is proposed.  相似文献

The wormlike micelles formed with the binary mixtures of surfactant polyoxyethylene alkyl ethers (CiEj), C10E5 + C14E5 (Mix1) and C14E5 + C14E7 (Mix2), were characterized by static (SLS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments. The SLS results have been analyzed with the aid of the light scattering theory for micelle solutions, thereby yielding the molar mass Mw(c) as a function of c along with the cross-sectional diameter d of the micelle. The observed Kc/DeltaR0 as a function of c, the mean-square radius of gyration (S2) and the hydrodynamic radius RH as functions of Mw have been well described by the theories for the wormlike spherocylinder model. It has been found that the micellar length increases with increasing concentration c or with raising temperature T irrespective of the composition of the surfactant mixtures. The length of the Mix1 and Mix2 micelles at fixed c and T steeply increases with increasing weight fraction wt of C14E5 in both of the surfactant mixtures, implying that the micelles greatly grow in length when the surfactant component with longer alkyl group or with shorter oxyethylene group increases in the mixture. The results are in line with the findings for the micelles of the single surfactant systems where the CiEj micelles grow in length to a greater extent for larger i and smaller j. Although the values of d and the spacing s between the adjacent surfactant molecules on the micellar surface do not significantly vary with composition of the surfactant mixture, the stiffness parameter lambda-1 remarkably decreases with wt in both Mix1 and Mix2 micelles, indicating that the stiffness of the micelle is controlled by the relative strength of the repulsive force due to the hydrophilic interactions between oxyethylene groups to the attractive one due to the hydrophobic interactions between alkyl groups among the surfactant molecules.  相似文献

We investigated the aggregation behavior of rod-like micelles of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in concentrated NaCl solution by quasi-elastic light scattering (QLS) and viscosity measurement over a range of temperature (25 °C to 50 °C) and NaCl concentration. The reduced viscosity of aqueous SDS in the presence of NaCl has been measured by an Ubbelohde-type capillary viscometer. We show mean hydrodynamic radius of micelles can be determined from viscosity data. We also determined mean hydrodynamic radius using quasi-elastic light scattering. Micellar size decreases with increasing temperature, whereas it increases with increasing ionic strength. The results of viscosity and dynamic light-scattering measurements are interpreted as the extension of length of rod-like micelles. We compare viscosity and light scattering experimental results.  相似文献

In order to compare the size characterizations in poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) obtained by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and small angle neutron scattering (SANS), DLS experiments were performed in various PEG solutions to ascertain the hydrodynamic radius. Data from the experiments were analyzed by using a method to eliminate effects of PEG aggregation on dynamic correlation functions. The results of the analysis were then compared to the radii of gyration reported from SANS experiments. The relation between the hydrodynamic radius, obtained by DLS, and the radius of gyration, obtained by SANS, in PEG in solution was found to be in agreement with a previously obtained relation for PEG, where the radius of gyration was found by static light scattering.  相似文献

Quasielastic light scattering was used to investigate the size and shape of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS) micelles in aqueous solutions. Measurements were made as a function of temperature and NaCl and SDBS concentrations. Light scattering data indicate that the micelles are spherocylinders with a semiminor axis of 22 Å. The length of the micelles increases strongly with salt concentration and decreases with temperature. The minimum micelle has an aggregation number of n0 = 28 and a hydrodynamic radius of R = 22 Å. Diffusion coefficient and intensity data were analyzed using a thermodynamic theory of micellar aggregation and a model based on DLVO theory of interactions.  相似文献

Small-angle neutron scattering studies were used to investigate the effect of adding an alcohol ethoxylate nonionic surfactant (d-C12E20) to aqueous solutions of a cationic surfactant, erucyl bis(hydroxyethyl) methylammonium chloride (EHAC), with and without salt (KCl). The systematic use of contrast-matching, by alternately highlighting or hiding one of the surfactants, confirms that mixed micelles are formed. In salt-free solutions, mixed spherical micelles are formed and a core-shell model combined with a Hayter-Penfold potential was used to describe the data. The core radius is dominated by the EHAC tails and the outer radius determined by the ethoxylate headgroups of the nonionic surfactant. Addition of KCl promotes micellar growth; however, results of varying the solvent contrast revealed that when the nonionic surfactant is incorporated into the wormlike structure micellar breaking is promoted. Thus, mixed wormlike micelles with shorter contour lengths compared to the pure EHAC worms are formed.  相似文献

This report investigates the effect of sodium chloride (NaCl) on the micellization, surface activity, and the evolution in the shape and size of n-octyl beta-D-thioglucopyranoside (OTG) aggregates. By using surface tension measurements, information was obtained on both changes in the critical micelle concentration and adsorption behavior in the air-liquid interface with the electrolyte concentration. These data were used to obtain the thermodynamic properties of micellization along with the corresponding adsorption parameters in the air-liquid interface. From extended static and dynamic light scattering measurements, the micelle molecular weight, the mean aggregation number, and the second virial coefficient, the apparent diffusion coefficient and the mean hydrodynamic radius of micelles in a range of NaCl concentrations were obtained. The light scattering data have shown that when the surfactant concentration is lower to 4.5 g/L, only spherical micelles are formed. However, an increase in the surfactant concentration induces an increase in micellar size, suggesting a rodlike growth of the micelles. This deviation of micelle geometry from spherical to rodlike is supported both by the ratio between the hydrodynamic radius and the radius of gyration and by the angular dependence of light scattering. On the other hand, the studies performed in the presence of high NaCl concentration (0.2 and 0.5 M) provide strong support for the view that the micelles may overlap together to form an entangled network above certain crossover concentration.  相似文献

Static light scattering has been measured for aqueous NaCl solutions of cetyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) at 25 °C. While spherical micelles are formed above the critical micelle concentration for 0–1.5 M NaCl solutions, rodlike micelles are formed at NaCl concentrations higher than 1.18 M.The aggregation number of rodlike micelles increases markedly with increasing NaCl concentration, and it is as large as 11400 in 4.0 M NaCl. Long rodlike micelles are semiflexible and behave like wormlike chains. Their contour length and persistence length have been calculated as 630 and 46.4 nm, respectively, in 4.0 M NaCl.Rodlike micelles overlap and entangle together to form a network in semidilute solutions above a threshold micelle concentration. The radius of gyration of the blob can be scaled for its molecular weight with the exponent, 0.55, coinciding with that for isolated rodlike micelles in dilute solutions. The scaling laws for the reciprocal envelope of light scattered in the semidilute regime and for the molecular weight and the radius of gyration of the blob are also discussed with reference to the micelle concentration.  相似文献

The self-assembly behavior of pH-sensitive amphiphiles N-dodecyl-1, 2-diaminoethane (C12N2N), N-dodecyl-1, 3-diaminopropane (C12N3N) and N-dodecyl-1, 4-diaminobutane (C12N4N) has been studied in aqueous solutions. Light scattering, viscosity and cryo-transmission electronic microscopy (cryo-TEM) results revealed that the aggregates transferred from spherical micelles to vesicles (MVT) via wormlike micelles as the pH was gradually varied from acidic to basic conditions. pH-dependent zeta potential and (1)H NMR studies confirmed these transitions. Interestingly, the formed wormlike micelles could transform into vesicles upon heating, which was studied by cryo-TEM, light scattering and viscosity techniques in detail. It is concluded that the pH and thermal MVT are a general phenomenon in all three amphiphiles investigated. Furthermore, NaCl induced a wormlike micelle to vesicle transition was also observed in C12N2N solution.

Wormlike micelles of the surfactant penta-, hexa-, and heptaoxyethylene dodecyl ethers C12 E5, C12 E6, and C12 E7 were characterized by static light scattering (SLS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments to examine effects of uptake of n-dodecane on the micellar characteristics. The SLS results have been successfully analyzed by the light scattering theory for micelle solutions to yield the molar mass Mw(c) as a function of concentration c along with the cross-sectional diameter d of the micelle. The apparent hydrodynamic radius RH,app(c) determined by DLS as a function of c has also been successfully analyzed by the fuzzy cylinder theory which (-1). It has been found that the micellar length Lw increases with increasing surfactant mass concentration c and the values of d and lambda(-1) increase with increasing n-dodecane content wd, as in the case of various CiEj micelles containing n-alcohol. On the other hand, the values of Mw, Lw, and RH,app for all the micelles examined decrease with increasing wd contrary to the micelles containing n-alcohol. This finding may be attributed to the fact that the addition of n-dodecane into the micelles weakens hydrophilic interactions among polyoxyethylene chains of the surfactant molecules and water, making the micelles unstable, and then leading them to collapse into smaller micelles.  相似文献

A polystyrene-block-polyisoprene (PS-b-PI) sample with 130 styrene and 370 isoprene units was synthesized and characterized. The diblock formed mostly cylindrical micelles in N,N-dimethylacetamide with a PI core and a PS corona. The PI core of the micelles was cross-linked by S2Cl2 to yield nanofibers. The nanofibers were shortened by ultrasonication to yield fractions withweight-average length (Lw) between approximately 900 and approximately3400 nm. Transmission electron microscopy and light scattering were used to characterize the fractions. The zero-shear intrinsic viscosity data [eta] of the fractions were obtained in tetrahydrofuran (THF), THF/N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF), and THF/cyclohexane (CHX), where THF is a good solvent for both the corona and the core, DMF solubilizes only the corona, and CHX is a theta solvent for the corona chains at 34.5 degrees C. The [eta] data of the fractions were treated by the Bohdanecky method derived from the Yamakawa-Fujii-Yoshizaki (YFY) theory for wormlike polymer chains and yielded the persistence length lP and the hydrodynamic diameters dh for the nanofibers. The reasonable dh values and the reasonable trend of dh variation with solvent quality change establish unambiguously the validity of YFY theory.  相似文献

The solution properties of cellulose derivatives are of interest from both technological and purely scientific aspects. At high concentrations these solutions form liquid crystalline structures. In dilute solution cellulosic chains can be described as semiflexible or wormlike with properties intermediate between random coils and rigid rods. A series of fractions of cellulose propionate have been examined by dilute solution viscometry, static and dynamic light scattering, and polarizing microscopy. Power law exponents are considerably larger than those observed for flexible chains and analysis of the intrinsic viscosity and hydrodynamic radii has yielded chain diameters and Kuhn statistical segment lengths. Corresponding aspect ratios from the hydrodynamic measurements are in good agreement with those obtained from polarizing microscopy, as analyzed in light of Flory's theory. Some aggregation and specific solvent effects have been observed, however separation of these effects has proven to be difficult. Results of these studies are compared to previous work for other cellulose derivatives. ©1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Aqueous solutions of the anionic surfactant potassium oleate (K-oleate) were studied using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), steady-state rheology, and cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM). The micellar structural changes induced by the addition of potassium chloride (KCl) and sodium polystyrenesulfonate (PSS) of different molecular weights were investigated. Upon addition of KCl, a transition from spherical to wormlike micelles was detected from the SANS data and confirmed by the cryo-TEM pictures. The rheological measurements revealed a strong dependence of the low-shear viscosity on the concentration of salt: a broad maximum in the viscosity curve was observed upon addition of KCl, characteristic of the growth of micelles into long worms, followed by branching. The addition of PSS to salt-free solutions of K-oleate had a significant effect on the scattering patterns, revealing partial growth of the spherical micelles into rodlike micelles. In contrast, in the presence of high salt concentrations, addition of PSS to solutions of wormlike micelles did not bring any noticeable modifications in the scattering. However, in the same salt conditions, a clear effect was observed on the low shear viscosity upon addition of PSS, which was found to depend significantly on molecular weight. This suggests a novel way of impacting the viscosity of solutions of wormlike micelles.  相似文献

We develop an analytical molecular-thermodynamic model for the aggregation free energy of branching portions of wormlike ionic micelles in 1:1 salt solution. The junction of three cylindrical aggregates is represented by a combination of pieces of the torus and bilayer. A geometry-dependent analytical solution is obtained for the linearized Poisson-Boltzmann equation. This analytical solution is applicable to saddle-like structures and reduces to the solutions known previously for planar, cylindrical, and spherical aggregates. For micellar junctions, our new analytical solution is in excellent agreement with numerical results over the range of parameters typical of ionic surfactant systems with branching micelles. Our model correctly predicts the sequence of stable aggregate morphologies, including a narrow bicontinuous zone, in dependence of hydrocarbon tail length, head size, and solution salinity. For predicting properties of a spatial network of wormlike micelles, our aggregation free energy is used in the Zilman-Safran theory. Our predictions are compared with experimental data for branching micelles of ionic surfactants.  相似文献
