A partition of characters associated to nilpotent subgroups

IfG is a finite solvable group andH is a maximal nilpotent subgroup ofG containingF(G), we show that there is a canonical basisP(G|H) of the space of class functions onG vanishing off anyG-conjugate ofH which consists of characters. ViaP(G|H) it is possible to partition the irreducible characters ofG into “blocks”. These behave like Brauerp-blocks and a Fong theory for them can be developed. Arrangement of Young subgroups in the symmetric group

The lattice of subgroups containing a fixed Young subgroup is studied in a finite symmetric group. On the number of invariant Hall subgroups under coprime action

In this note, we not only simplify, but also generalize a recent result of Beltrán and Shao (J. Algebra 490:380–389, 2017).     

An action of subgroups of mapping class groups on polynomial algebras

We study a certain subgroup of the mapping class group of a surface with boundary by obtaining an action of this subgroup on a polynomial algebra. This action comes from a lift of the action of the subgroup on a trace algebra, Magnus having done a similar thing for the braid groups. We then investigate the invariant theory for this action and various representations that this action affords. In particular, we obtain finite permutation representations and infinite linear representations of these subgroups that are non-trivial on subgroups of the Torelli group.     

The influence of minimal subgroups of focal subgroups on the structure of finite groups

A subgroup H of a finite group G is said to be complemented in G if there exists a subgroup K of G such that G=HK and H∩K=1. In this paper, it is proved that a finite group G is p-nilpotent provided p is the smallest prime number dividing the order of G and every minimal subgroup of the p-focal subgroup of G is complemented in N_G(P), where P is a Sylow p-subgroup of G. As some applications, some interesting results related with complemented minimal subgroups of focal subgroups are obtained.     

Innately transitive subgroups of wreath products in product action

A permutation group is innately transitive if it has a transitive minimal normal subgroup, which is referred to as a plinth. We study the class of finite, innately transitive permutation groups that can be embedded into wreath products in product action. This investigation is carried out by observing that such a wreath product preserves a natural Cartesian decomposition of the underlying set. Previously we classified the possible embeddings in the case where the plinth is simple. Here we extend that classification and identify several different types of Cartesian decompositions that can be preserved by an innately transitive group with a non-abelian plinth. These different types of decompositions lead to different types of embeddings of the acting group into wreath products in product action. We also obtain a full characterisation of embeddings of innately transitive groups with diagonal type into such wreath products.

     

Reflection subgroups and sub-root systems of the imprimitive complex reflection groups

Based on a graph-theoretic analysis, we determine all the irreducible reflection subgroups of the imprimitive complex reflection groups G(m, p, n), and describe the irreducible subsystems of all possible types in the root system R(m, p, n) of G(m, p, n).     

The partition problem

In this paper we describe several forms of thek-partition problem and give integer programming formulations of each case. The dimension of the associated polytopes and some basic facets are identified. The influence of weakly-supplemented subgroups on the structure of finite groups

A subgroup H of a finite group G is weakly-supplemented in G if there exists a proper subgroup K of G such that G = HK. In the paper it is proved that a finite group G is p-nilpotent provided p is the smallest prime number dividing the order of G and every minimal subgroup of P∩G′ is weakly-supplemented in N _G (P), where P is a Sylow p-subgroup of G. As applications, some interesting results with weakly-supplemented minimal subgroups of P∩G′ are obtained.
