In this paper a discrete location model for non-essential service facilities planning is described, which seeks the number, location, and size of facilities, that maximizes the total expected demand attracted by the facilities. It is assumed that the demand for service is sensitive to the distance from facilities and to their size. It is also assumed that facilities must satisfy a threshold level of demand (facilities are not economically viable below that level). A Mixed-Integer Nonlinear Programming (MINLP) model is proposed for this problem. A branch-and-bound algorithm is designed for solving this MINLP and its convergence to a global minimum is established. A finite procedure is also introduced to find a feasible solution for the MINLP that reduces the overall search in the binary tree generated by the branch-and-bound algorithm. Some numerical results using a GAMS/MINOS implementation of the algorithm are reported to illustrate its efficacy and efficiency in practice.  相似文献

We consider the discrete version of the competitive facility location problem in which new facilities have to be located by a new market entrant firm to compete against already existing facilities that may belong to one or more competitors. The demand is assumed to be aggregated at certain points in the plane and the new facilities can be located at predetermined candidate sites. We employ Huff's gravity-based rule in modelling the behaviour of the customers where the probability that customers at a demand point patronize a certain facility is proportional to the facility attractiveness and inversely proportional to the distance between the facility site and demand point. The objective of the firm is to determine the locations of the new facilities and their attractiveness levels so as to maximize the profit, which is calculated as the revenue from the customers less the fixed cost of opening the facilities and variable cost of setting their attractiveness levels. We formulate a mixed-integer nonlinear programming model for this problem and propose three methods for its solution: a Lagrangean heuristic, a branch-and-bound method with Lagrangean relaxation, and another branch-and-bound method with nonlinear programming relaxation. Computational results obtained on a set of randomly generated instances show that the last method outperforms the others in terms of accuracy and efficiency and can provide an optimal solution in a reasonable amount of time.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider the problem of making simultaneous decisions on the location, service rate (capacity) and the price of providing service for facilities on a network. We assume that the demand for service from each node of the network follows a Poisson process. The demand is assumed to depend on both price and distance. All facilities are assumed to charge the same price and customers wishing to obtain service choose a facility according to a Multinomial Logit function. Upon arrival to a facility, customers may join the system after observing the number of people in the queue. Service time at each facility is assumed to be exponentially distributed. We first present several structural results. Then, we propose an algorithm to obtain the optimal service rate and an approximate optimal price at each facility. We also develop a heuristic algorithm to find the locations of the facilities based on the tabu search method. We demonstrate the efficiency of the algorithms numerically.  相似文献

We investigate the problem of locating a set of service facilities that need to service customers on a network. To provide service, a server has to visit both the demand node and one of several collection depots. We employ the criterion of minimizing the weighted sum of round trip distances. We prove that there exists a dominating location set for the problem on a general network. The properties of the solution on a tree and on a cycle are discussed. The problem of locating service facilities and collection depots simultaneously is also studied. To solve the problem on a general network, we suggest a Lagrangian relaxation imbedded branch-and-bound algorithm. Computational results are reported.  相似文献

This paper studies a facility location problem with stochastic customer demand and immobile servers. Motivated by applications to locating bank automated teller machines (ATMs) or Internet mirror sites, these models are developed for situations in which immobile service facilities are congested by stochastic demand originating from nearby customer locations. Customers are assumed to visit the closest open facility. The objective of this problem is to minimize customers' total traveling cost and waiting cost. In addition, there is a restriction on the number of facilities that may be opened and an upper bound on the allowable expected waiting time at a facility. Three heuristic algorithms are developed, including a greedy-dropping procedure, a tabu search approach and an -optimal branch-and-bound method. These methods are compared computationally on a bank location data set from Amherst, New York.  相似文献

In this study, we present a bi-objective facility location model that considers both partial coverage and service to uncovered demands. Due to limited number of facilities to be opened, some of the demand nodes may not be within full or partial coverage distance of a facility. However, a demand node that is not within the coverage distance of a facility should get service from the nearest facility within the shortest possible time. In this model, it is assumed that demand nodes within the predefined distance of opened facilities are fully covered, and after that distance the coverage level decreases linearly. The objectives are defined as the maximization of full and partial coverage, and the minimization of the maximum distance between uncovered demand nodes and their nearest facilities. We develop a new multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) called modified SPEA-II (mSPEA-II). In this method, the fitness function of SPEA-II is modified and the crowding distance of NSGA-II is used. The performance of mSPEA-II is tested on randomly generated problems of different sizes. The results are compared with the solutions of the most well-known MOGAs, NSGA-II and SPEA-II. Computational experiments show that mSPEA-II outperforms both NSGA-II and SPEA-II.  相似文献

In this paper, we present the problem of optimizing the location and pricing for a set of new service facilities entering a competitive marketplace. We assume that the new facilities must charge the same (uniform) price and the objective is to optimize the overall profit for the new facilities. Demand for service is assumed to be concentrated at discrete demand points (customer markets); customers in each market patronize the facility providing the highest utility. Customer demand function is assumed to be elastic; the demand is affected by the price, facility attractiveness, and the travel cost for the highest-utility facility. We provide both structural and algorithmic results, as well as some managerial insights for this problem. We show that the optimal price can be selected from a certain finite set of values that can be computed in advance; this fact is used to develop an efficient mathematical programming formulation for our model.  相似文献

A model for designing the network of a new entrant supply chain under inelastic demand and in the presence of pre-existing competing chains is proposed. These supply chains provide an identical product for a market area. The model considers the location of distribution centres and retail outlets on a discrete set of potential locations. The assumptions of the model are: (1) static competition between the new and pre-existing chains and (2) a probabilistic customer behaviour based on an attraction function depending on both the location and the quality of the retailers. This model also incorporates the impact of the facilities’ location decisions on the operational inventory and shipment decisions. The resulting model is formulated as a mixed integer non-linear programme (MINLP). To solve the MINLP it is transformed to a linear one. We illustrate the model, discuss the results of a real-world case, and investigate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm using randomly generated examples.  相似文献

We develop a spatial interaction model that seeks to simultaneously optimize location and design decisions for a set of new facilities. The facilities compete for customer demand with pre-existing competitive facilities and with each other. The customer demand is assumed to be elastic, expanding as the utility of the service offered by the facilities increases. Increases in the utility can be achieved by increasing the number of facilities, design improvements, or locating facilities closer to the customer.  相似文献

This paper considers the solution of Mixed Integer Nonlinear Programming (MINLP) problems. Classical methods for the solution of MINLP problems decompose the problem by separating the nonlinear part from the integer part. This approach is largely due to the existence of packaged software for solving Nonlinear Programming (NLP) and Mixed Integer Linear Programming problems. In contrast, an integrated approach to solving MINLP problems is considered here. This new algorithm is based on branch-and-bound, but does not require the NLP problem at each node to be solved to optimality. Instead, branching is allowed after each iteration of the NLP solver. In this way, the nonlinear part of the MINLP problem is solved whilst searching the tree. The nonlinear solver that is considered in this paper is a Sequential Quadratic Programming solver.A numerical comparison of the new method with nonlinear branch-and-bound is presented and a factor of up to 3 improvement over branch-and-bound is observed.  相似文献

Locating transshipment facilities and allocating origins and destinations to transshipment facilities are important decisions for many distribution and logistic systems. Models that treat demand as a continuous density over the service region often assume certain facility locations or a certain allocation of demand. It may be assumed that facility locations lie on a rectangular grid or that demand is allocated to the nearest facility or allocated such that each facility serves an equal amount of demand. These assumptions result in suboptimal distribution systems. This paper compares the transportation cost for suboptimal location and allocation schemes to the optimal cost to determine if suboptimal location and allocation schemes can produce nearly optimal transportation costs. Analytical results for distribution to a continuous demand show that nearly optimal costs can be achieved with suboptimal locations. An example of distribution to discrete demand points indicates the difficulties in applying these results to discrete demand problems.  相似文献

This research studies a multi-stage supply chain system that operates under a JIT (just-in-time) delivery policy. Kanbans play an important role in the information and material flows in a supply chain system. Thus, a kanban mechanism is employed to assist in linking different production processes in a supply chain system to implement the scope of JIT philosophy. For a multi-stage supply chain system, a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problem is formulated from the perspective of JIT delivery policy where a kanban may reflect to a transporter such as a truck or a fork-lifter. The number of kanbans, the batch size, the number of batches and the total quantity over one period are determined optimally. It is solved optimally by branch and bound method. A greedy heuristic to avoid the large computational time in branch-and-bound algorithm is developed for solving a large MINLP. Coupled with plant-wide efforts for cost control and management commitment, a logistic system for controlling the production as well as the supply chain is built, which results in minimizing the total cost of the supply chain system. The results show that the improvements in reduction of inventory, wasted labor and customer service in a supply chain are significantly accomplished through the kanban mechanism.  相似文献

Any solution to facility location problems will consider determining the best suitable locations with respect to certain criteria. Among different types of location problems, involving emergency service system (ESSs) are one of the most widely studied in the literature, and solutions to these problems will mostly aim to minimize the mean response time to demands. In practice, however, a demand may not be served from its nearest facility if that facility is engaged in serving other demands. This makes it a requirement to assign backup services so as to improve response time and service quality. The level of backup service is a key, strategic-level planning factor, and must be taken into consideration carefully. Moreover, in emergency service operations conducted in congested demand regions, demand assignment policy is another important factor that affects the system performance. Models failing to adopt sufficient levels of backup service and realistic demand assignment policies may significantly deteriorate the system performance.Considering the classic p-median problem (pMP) location model, this paper investigates the effects of backup service level, demand assignment policy, demand density, and number of facilities and their locations on the solution performance in terms of multiple metrics. For this purpose, we adopt a combined optimization and simulation approach. We will first modify the classic pMP to account for distances to backup services. Next, we employ a discrete event simulation to evaluate the performance of location schemes obtained from the deterministic mathematical model. Our results provide insights for decision-makers while planning ESS operations.  相似文献

Capacitated covering models aim at covering the maximum amount of customers’ demand using a set of capacitated facilities. Based on the assumptions made in such models, there is a unique scenario to open a facility in which each facility has a pre-specified capacity and an operating budget. In this paper, we propose a generalization of the maximal covering location problem, in which facilities have different scenarios for being constructed. Essentially, based on the budget invested to construct a given facility, it can provide different service levels to the surrounded customers. Having a limited budget to open the facilities, the goal is locating a subset of facilities with the optimal opening scenario, in order to maximize the total covered demand and subject to the service level constraint. Integer linear programming formulations are proposed and tested using ILOG CPLEX. An iterated local search algorithm is also developed to solve the introduced problem.  相似文献

In this paper, we develop a multiobjective model to depict the tradeoffs involved when locating one or more undesirable facilities to service a region. We assume that the region requires a certain capacity of service, and that this capacity can be met by building a combination of different-sized facilities. Examples could include sanitary landfills, incinerators, and power-generating stations. Our objectives are to minimize the total cost of the facilities located, the total opposition to the facilities, and the maximum disutility imposed on any individual. Opposition and disutility are assumed to be nonlinearly decreasing functions of distance, and increasing functions of facility size. We formulate our model as a multiobjective mixed-integer program, and generate the set of efficient solutions using an enumeration algorithm. Our code can solve realistically sized problems on a microcomputer. We give an example to illustrate the tradeoffs between the three objectives, which are inevitable in such a location problem. This research was supported by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) of Canada (OGP 25481), and by the Nova Fellowship of the Faculty of Business, University of Alberta.  相似文献

We present an improved Bernstein global optimization algorithm to solve polynomial mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) problems. The algorithm is of branch-and-bound type, and uses the Bernstein form of the polynomials for the global optimization. The new ingredients in the algorithm include a modified subdivision procedure, a vectorized Bernstein cut-off test and a new branching rule for the decision variables. The performance of the improved algorithm is tested and compared with earlier reported Bernstein global optimization algorithm (to solve polynomial MINLPs) and with several state-of-the-art MINLP solvers on a set of 19 test problems. The results of the tests show the superiority of the improved algorithm over the earlier reported Bernstein algorithm and the state-of-the-art solvers in terms of the chosen performance metrics. Similarly, efficacy of the improved algorithm in handling a real-world MINLP problem is brought out via a trim-loss minimization problem from the process industry.  相似文献

The location of facilities (antennas, ambulances, police patrols, etc) has been widely studied in the literature. The maximal covering location problem aims at locating the facilities in such positions that maximizes certain notion of coverage. In the dynamic or multi-period version of the problem, it is assumed that the nodes’ demand changes with the time and as a consequence, facilities can be opened or closed among the periods. In this contribution we propose to solve dynamic maximal covering location problem using an algorithm portfolio that includes adaptation, cooperation and learning. The portfolio is composed of an evolutionary strategy and three different simulated annealing methods (that were recently used to solve the problem). Experiments were conducted on 45 test instances (considering up to 2500 nodes and 200 potential facility locations). The results clearly show that the performance of the portfolio is significantly better than its constituent algorithms.  相似文献

In this work, the problem of a company or chain (the leader) that considers the reaction of a competitor chain (the follower) is studied. In particular, the leader wants to set up a single new facility in a planar market where similar facilities of the follower, and possibly of its own chain, are already present. The follower will react by locating another single facility after the leader locates its own facility. Both the location and the quality (representing design, quality of products, prices, etc.) of the new leader’s facility have to be found. The aim is to maximize the profit obtained by the leader considering the future follower’s entry. The demand is supposed to be concentrated at n demand points. Each demand point splits its buying power among the facilities proportionally to the attraction it feels for them. The attraction of a demand point for a facility depends on both the location and the quality of the facility. Usually, the demand is considered in the literature to be fixed or constant regardless the conditions of the market. In this paper, the demand varies depending on the attraction for the facilities. Taking variable demand into consideration makes the model more realistic. However, it increases the complexity of the problem and, therefore, the computational effort needed to solve it. Three heuristic methods are proposed to cope with this hard-to-solve global optimization problem, namely, a grid search procedure, a multistart algorithm and a two-level evolutionary algorithm. The computational studies show that the evolutionary algorithm is both the most robust algorithm and the one that provides the best results.  相似文献

The universal facility location problem generalizes several classical facility location problems, such as the uncapacitated facility location problem and the capacitated location problem (both hard and soft capacities). In the universal facility location problem, we are given a set of demand points and a set of facilities. We wish to assign the demands to facilities such that the total service as well as facility cost is minimized. The service cost is proportional to the distance that each unit of the demand has to travel to its assigned facility. The open cost of facility i depends on the amount z of demand assigned to i and is given by a cost function \(f_i(z)\). In this work, we extend the universal facility location problem to include linear penalties, where we pay certain penalty cost whenever we refuse serving some demand points. As our main contribution, we present a (\(7.88+\epsilon \))-approximation local search algorithm for this problem.  相似文献
