Various Monte Carlo techniques are used to determine the complete phase diagrams of the square-well model for the attractive ranges lambda = 1.15 and lambda = 1.25. The results for the latter case are in agreement with earlier Monte Carlo simulations for the fluid-fluid coexistence curve and yield new results for the liquidus-solidus lines. Our results for lambda = 1.15 are new. We find that the fluid-fluid critical point is metastable for both cases, with the case lambda = 1.25 being just below the threshold value for metastability. We compare our results with prior studies and with experimental results for the gamma(II)-crystallin.  相似文献

The phase behavior of the Baxter adhesive hard sphere fluid has been determined using specialized Monte Carlo simulations. We give a detailed account of the techniques used and present data for the fluid-fluid coexistence curve as well as parametrized fits for the supercritical equation of state and the percolation threshold. These properties are compared with the existing results of Percus-Yevick theory for this system.  相似文献

The vapor-liquid coexistence boundaries of fluids composed of particles interacting with highly directional patchy interactions, in addition to an isotropic square well potential, are evaluated using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations combined with the histogram reweighting and finite size scaling methods. We are motivated to study this more complicated model for two reasons. First, it is established that the reduced widths of the metastable vapor-liquid coexistence curve predicted by a model with only isotropic interparticle interactions are much too narrow when compared to the experimental phase behavior of protein solutions. Second, interprotein interactions are well known to be "patchy." Our results show that at a constant total areal density of patches, the critical temperature and the critical density increase monotonically with an increasing number of uniformly spaced patches. The vapor-liquid coexistence curves plotted in reduced coordinates (i.e., the temperature and the density scaled by their respective critical values) are found to be effectively independent of the number of patches, but are much broader than those found for the isotropic models. Our findings for the reduced width of the coexistence curve are almost in quantitative agreement with the available experimental data for protein solutions, stressing the importance of patchiness in this context.  相似文献

A continuum model of globular proteins proposed by Talanquer and Oxtoby [J. Chem. Phys. 109, 223 (1998)] is investigated numerically, with particular emphasis on the region near the metastable fluid-fluid coexistence curve. Classical nucleation theory is shown to be invalid not only in the vicinity of the metastable critical point but also close to the liquidus line. An approximate analytic solution is also presented for the shape and properties of the nucleating crystal droplet.  相似文献

Monte Carlo simulations are presented for two models of aluminum: an embedded-atom model and an explicit many-body model. Vapor/liquid coexistence curves are determined using Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo simulations. The normal boiling points predicted by both models are somewhat higher (by about 10%) than the experimental value. Isothermal constant-stress simulations are used to simulate solid Al from 300 K to the triple point. The solid structures are at least metastable in the face-centered cubic configuration, and the specific heat is determined to be lower than the experimental value. The melting point for the embedded-atom model determined via thermodynamic integration along a pseudo-supercritical path is approximately 20% higher than the experimental value.  相似文献

Liquid-liquid and liquid-vapor coexistence regions of various water models were determined by Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of isotherms of density fluctuation-restricted systems and by Gibbs ensemble MC simulations. All studied water models show multiple liquid-liquid phase transitions in the supercooled region: we observe two transitions of the TIP4P, TIP5P, and SPCE models and three transitions of the ST2 model. The location of these phase transitions with respect to the liquid-vapor coexistence curve and the glass temperature is highly sensitive to the water model and its implementation. We suggest that the apparent thermodynamic singularity of real liquid water in the supercooled region at about 228 K is caused by an approach to the spinodal of the first (lowest density) liquid-liquid phase transition. The well-known density maximum of liquid water at 277 K is related to the second liquid-liquid phase transition, which is located at positive pressures with a critical point close to the maximum. A possible order parameter and the universality class of liquid-liquid phase transitions in one-component fluids are discussed.  相似文献

We report a numerical simulation for the phase diagram of a simple two-dimensional model, similar to the one proposed by Noro and Frenkel [J. Chem. Phys. 114, 2477 (2001)] for membrane proteins, but one that includes the role of the solvent. We first use Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo simulations to determine the phase behavior of particles interacting via a square-well potential in two dimensions for various values of the interaction range. A phenomenological model for the solute-solvent interactions is then studied to understand how the fluid-fluid coexistence curve is modified by solute-solvent interactions. It is shown that such a model can yield systems with liquid-liquid phase separation curves that have both upper and lower critical points, as well as closed loop phase diagrams, as is the case with the corresponding three-dimensional model.  相似文献

We investigate the pressure effects on the transitions between the disordered phases in supercooled liquid silicon through Monte Carlo simulations and efficient methods to compute free energies. Our calculations, using an environment dependent interatomic potential for Si, indicate that at zero pressure the liquid-liquid phase transition, between the high density liquid and the low density liquid, occurs at a temperature 325K below melting. We found that the liquid-liquid transition temperature decreases with increasing pressure, following the liquid-solid coexistence curve. As pressure increases, the liquid-liquid coexistence curve approaches the region where the glass transition between the low density liquid and the low density amorphous takes place. Above 5 GPa, our calculations show that the liquid-liquid transition is suppressed by the glassy dynamics of the system. We also found that above 5 GPa, the glass transition temperature is lower than that at lower pressures, suggesting that under these conditions the glass transition occurs between the high density liquid and the high density amorphous.  相似文献

Monte Carlo simulations are presented for a coarse-grained model of real quadrupolar fluids. Molecules are represented by particles interacting with Lennard-Jones forces plus the thermally averaged quadrupole-quadrupole interaction. The properties discussed include the vapor-liquid coexistence curve, the vapor pressure along coexistence, and the surface tension. The full isotherms are also accessible over a wide range of temperatures and densities. It is shown that the critical parameters (critical temperature, density, and pressure) depend almost linearly on a quadrupolar parameter q=Q(*4)T*, where Q* is the reduced quadrupole moment of the molecule and T* the reduced temperature. The model can be applied to a variety of small quadrupolar molecules. We focus on carbon dioxide as a test case, but consider nitrogen and benzene, too. Experimental critical temperature, density, and quadrupolar moment are sufficient to fix the parameters of the model. The resulting agreement with experiments is excellent and marks a significant improvement over approaches which neglect quadrupolar effects. The same coarse-grained model was also applied in the framework of perturbation theory in the mean spherical approximation. As expected, the latter deviates from the Monte Carlo results in the critical region, but is reasonably accurate at lower temperatures.  相似文献

The fourth virial coefficient of symmetric nonadditive hard-disc mixtures is calculated over a wide range of nonadditivity. The irreducible cluster integrals were evaluated numerically using a standard Monte Carlo method. The coexistence line relative to the fluid-fluid phase transition, calculated through two equations of state built using the new virial coefficients, is compared with some numerical simulation results.  相似文献

We have combined Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo simulations with the aggregation volume-biased method in conjunction with the Gibbs-Duhem method to provide the first direct estimates for the vapor-solid, vapor-liquid, and liquid-solid phase coexistences of square-well fluids with three different ranges of attraction. Our results are consistent with the previous simulations and verify the notion that the vapor-liquid coexistence behavior becomes metastable for cases where the attraction well becomes smaller than 1.25 times the particle diameter. In these cases no triple point is found.  相似文献

Monte Carlo simulations are used to establish the potential of mean force between two globular proteins in an aqueous electrolyte solution. This potential includes nonelectrostatic contributions arising from dispersion forces first, between the globular proteins, and second, between ions in solution and between each ion and the globular protein. These latter contributions are missing from standard models. The potential of mean force, obtained from simulation, is fitted to an analytic equation. Using our analytic potential of mean force and Barker-Henderson perturbation theory, we obtain phase diagrams for lysozyme solutions that include stable and metastable fluid-fluid and solid-fluid phases when the electrolyte is 0.2 M NaSCN or NaI or NaCl. The nature of the electrolyte has a significant effect on the phase diagram.  相似文献

Critical properties of aluminum   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo calculations are performed using a validated embedded-atom potential to obtain the vapor-liquid coexistence curve for elemental aluminum in good agreement with available experimental data up to the boiling point. These calculations are then extended to make a reliable prediction of the critical temperature, pressure, and density of Al, which have previously been known only with very large uncertainties. This demonstrates the ability of modern simulations to predict fundamental physical properties that are extremely difficult to measure directly.  相似文献

Gibbs ensemble Monte Carlo (GEMC) simulations have been done on polydisperse systems of particles interacting via the Asakura-Oosawa depletion potential. On restricting the range of the depletion attraction particles aggregate forming long-lived, unequilibrated structures and it becomes increasingly difficult to sample phase space. It is found that by simply equilibrating systems sequentially starting at longer ranges of attraction, the equilibrium fluid-fluid phase coexistence can be determined down to polymer-colloid size ratios approaching 10%. For such short ranges of the depletion interaction it becomes difficult to obtain reliable estimates of chemical potentials due to occasional particle insertions resulting in very low energies. The results show that full equilibrium is not reached at a polymer-colloid size ratio of 10% in spite of lengthy simulations due to persistent structures in the dense-fluid phase dominated by particles belonging to the larger size fraction. Free-volume theory with a polydisperse colloid component, modeled as a three-component mixture, is used for qualitative comparison with some of the results of the computer simulations.  相似文献

Grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations are performed to determine the adsorption/desorption isotherms at different temperatures of a Lennard-Jones fluid confined within a simple model of cylindrical pores presenting chemical heterogeneities. A complex hysteresis loop is observed, showing hysteresis subloops (scanning curves). This is shown to be consistent with the existence of several metastable states (local minima in the system free energy). A recent extension to the Gibbs ensemble technique is then used to calculate the complete coexistence diagram of these local minima.  相似文献

A completely new phase for one-component hard spheres is reported in an unexpected region of the phase diagram. The new phase is observed at compressibility factors intermediate between the solid and the metastable branches. It can be obtained from either Monte Carlo simulations alone or a combination of Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics calculations. An analysis of the intermediate scattering function data shows that the new phase is in a stable equilibrium. Radial distribution function data, configurational snapshots, bond order parameters, and translational order parameters obtained from molecular simulations indicate that the new phase is significantly different from the isotropic liquid, metastable, or crystalline phases traditionally observed in hard sphere systems. This result significantly changes our previous understanding of the behavior of hard spheres.  相似文献

The Asakura-Oosawa model for colloid-polymer mixtures is studied by Monte Carlo simulations at densities inside the two-phase coexistence region of fluid and solid. Choosing a geometry where the system is confined between two flat walls, and a wall-colloid potential that leads to incomplete wetting of the crystal at the wall, conditions can be created where a single nanoscopic wall-attached crystalline cluster coexists with fluid in the remainder of the simulation box. Following related ideas that have been useful to study heterogeneous nucleation of liquid droplets at the vapor-liquid coexistence, we estimate the contact angles from observations of the crystalline clusters in thermal equilibrium. We find fair agreement with a prediction based on Young's equation, using estimates of interface and wall tension from the study of flat surfaces. It is shown that the pressure versus density curve of the finite system exhibits a loop, but the pressure maximum signifies the "droplet evaporation-condensation" transition and thus has nothing in common with a van der Waals-like loop. Preparing systems where the packing fraction is deep inside the two-phase coexistence region, the system spontaneously forms a "slab state," with two wall-attached crystalline domains separated by (flat) interfaces from liquid in full equilibrium with the crystal in between; analysis of such states allows a precise estimation of the bulk equilibrium properties at phase coexistence.  相似文献

The role of a matrix response to a fluid insertion is analyzed in terms of a perturbation theory and Monte Carlo simulations applied to a hard sphere fluid in a slit of fluctuating density-dependent width. It is demonstrated that a coupling of the fluid-slit repulsion, spatial confinement, and the matrix dilatation acts as an effective fluid-fluid attraction, inducing a pseudocritical state with divergent linear compressibility and noncritical density fluctuations. An appropriate combination of the dilatation rate, fluid density, and the slit size leads to the fluid states with negative linear compressibility. It is shown that the switching from positive to negative compressibility is accompanied by an abrupt change in the packing mechanism.  相似文献

The percolation transition of the hydrogen-bonded clusters of molecules is investigated in supercritical water by Monte Carlo computer simulations. Simulations have been performed at four thermodynamic state points located above the supercritical extension of the vapor-liquid coexistence curve on the p-T phase diagram and at four state points located below this curve. It is found in a temperature range of a few hundred Kelvin that the extension of the vapor-liquid coexistence curve separates the supercritical thermodynamic states in which the water molecules form infinite hydrogen-bonded clusters from those in which the hydrogen-bonded clusters are isolated oligomers. However, the difference between the size of the hydrogen-bonded clusters at thermodynamic states located at the two sides of the extension of the coexistence curve is found to decrease with increasing temperature, and the present results suggest that this difference is likely to vanish at high enough temperatures.  相似文献

We compute the fourth virial coefficient of a binary nonadditive, hard-sphere mixture over a wide range of deviations from diameter additivity and size ratios. Hinging on this knowledge, we build up a y expansion (Barboy, B.; Gelbart, W. N. J. Chem. Phys. 1979, 71, 3053) in order to trace the fluid-fluid coexistence lines, which we then compare with the available Gibbs-ensemble Monte Carlo data and with the estimates obtained through two refined integral-equation theories of the fluid state. We find that in a regime of moderately negative nonadditivity and largely asymmetric diameters, relevant to the modeling of sterically and electrostatically stabilized colloidal mixtures, the fluid-fluid critical point is unstable with respect to crystallization.  相似文献
