A closed topological n-manifold M n is of S 1-category 2 if it can be covered by two open subsets W 1, W 2 such that the inclusions W i M n factor homotopically through maps W i S 1. We show that for n > 3 the fundamental group of such an n-manifold is either trivial or infinite cyclic.  相似文献

Abstract Thom–Pontrjagin constructions are used to give a computable necessary and sufficient condition for a homomorphism ϕ : H n (L;Z) → H n (M;Z) to be realized by a map f : ML of degree k for closed (n − 1)-connected 2n-manifolds M and L, n > 1. A corollary is that each (n − 1)-connected 2n-manifold admits selfmaps of degree larger than 1, n > 1. In the most interesting case of dimension 4, with the additional surgery arguments we give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a degree k map from a closed orientable 4-manifold M to a closed simply connected 4-manifold L in terms of their intersection forms; in particular, there is a map f : ML of degree 1 if and only if the intersection form of L is isomorphic to a direct summand of that of M. In this work we generalize the case of scalar curvature zero the results of Simmons (Ann. Math. 88 (1968), 62–105) for minimal cones in Rn+1. If Mn−1 is a compact hypersurface of the sphere Sn(1) we represent by C(M)ε the truncated cone based on M with center at the origin. It is easy to see that M has zero scalar curvature if and only if the cone base on M also has zero scalar curvature. Hounie and Leite (J. Differential Geom. 41 (1995), 247–258) recently gave the conditions for the ellipticity of the partial differential equation of the scalar curvature. To show that, we have to assume n ⩾ 4 and the three-curvature of M to be different from zero. For such cones, we prove that, for nslant 7 there is an ε for which the truncate cone C(M)ε is not stable. We also show that for n ⩾ 8 there exist compact, orientable hypersurfaces Mn−1 of the sphere with zero scalar curvature and S3 different from zero, for which all truncated cones based on M are stable. L p approximation capability of radial basis function (RBF) neural networks is investigated. If g: R +1R 1 and ∈ L loc p (R n ) with 1 ≤ p < ∞, then the RBF neural networks with g as the activation function can approximate any given function in L p (K) with any accuracy for any compact set K in R n , if and only if g(x) is not an even polynomial. In this paper we determined all of the possible self-mapping degrees of the manifolds with S3-geometry, which are supposed to be all 3-manifolds with finite fundamental groups. If R is a Dedekind domain, P a prime ideal of R and SR a finite subset then a P-ordering of S, as introduced by M. Bhargava in (J. Reine Angew. Math. 490:101–127, 1997), is an ordering {a i } i=1 m of the elements of S with the property that, for each 1<im, the choice of a i minimizes the P-adic valuation of j<i (sa j ) over elements sS. If S, S are two finite subsets of R of the same cardinality then a bijection φ:SS is a P-ordering equivalence if it preserves P-orderings. In this paper we give upper and lower bounds for the number of distinct P-orderings a finite set can have in terms of its cardinality and give an upper bound on the number of P-ordering equivalence classes of a given cardinality.  相似文献

Consider the cyclic group C 2 of order two acting by complex-conjugation on the unit circle S 1. The main result is that a finitely dominated manifold W of dimension > 4 admits a cocompact, free, discontinuous action by the infinite dihedral group D if and only if W is the infinite cyclic cover of a free C 2-manifold M such that M admits a C 2-equivariant manifold approximate fibration to S 1. The novelty in this setting is the existence of codimension-one, invariant submanifolds of M and W. Along the way, we develop an equivariant sucking principle for orthogonal actions of finite groups on Euclidean space.  相似文献

A Latin squares of order v with ni missing sub-Latin squares (holes) of order hi (1 〈= i 〈 k), which are disjoint and spanning (i.e. ∑k i=l1 nihi = v), is called a partitioned incomplete Latin squares and denoted by PILS. The type of PILS is defined by (h1n1 h2n2…hknk ). If any two PILS inaset of t PILS of type T are orthogonal, then we denote the set by t-HMOLS(T). It has been proved that 3-HMOLS(2n31) exist for n ≥6 with 11 possible exceptions. In this paper, we investigate the existence of 3-HMOLS(2nu1) with u ≥ 4, and prove that 3-HMOLS(2~u1) exist if n ≥ 54 and n ≥7/4u + 7.  相似文献

We present a short and direct proof (based on the Pontryagin-Thom construction) of the following Pontryagin-Steenrod-Wu theorem: (a) LetM be a connected orientable closed smooth (n + 1)-manifold,n≥3. Define the degree map deg: π n (M) →H n (M; ℤ) by the formula degf =f*[S n ], where [S n ] εH n (M; ℤ) is the fundamental class. The degree map is bijective, if there existsβ εH 2(M, ℤ/2ℤ) such thatβ ·w 2(M) ε 0. If suchβ does not exist, then deg is a 2-1 map; and (b) LetM be an orientable closed smooth (n+2)-manifold,n≥3. It is known that not every Cantor set of S 1 is C 1-minimal. In this work we prove that every member of a subfamily of what we here call regular interval Cantor set is not C 1-minimal. We also prove that no member of a class of Cantor sets that includes this subfamily is C 1+∈-minimal, for any ∈ > 0. Partially supported by CNPq-Brasil and PEDECIBA-Uruguay.  相似文献

Let M^n be a closed spacelike submanifold isometrically immersed in de Sitter space Sp^(n p)(c), Denote by R,H and S the normalized scalar curvature,the mean curvature and the square of the length of the second fundamental form of M^n ,respectively. Suppose R is constant and R≤c. The pinching problem on S is studied and a rigidity theorem for M^n immersed in Sp^(n p)(c) with parallel normalized mean curvature vector field is proved. When n≥3, the pinching constant is the best. Thus, the mistake of the paper “Space-like hypersurfaces in de Sitter space with constant scalar curvature”(see Manus Math, 1998,95 :499-505) is corrected. Moreover,the reduction of the codimension when M^n is a complete submanifold in Sp^(n p)(c) with parallel normalized mean curvature vector field is investigated.  相似文献

The so-called weakly d-Koszul-type module is introduced and it turns out that each weakly d-Koszul-type module contains a d-Koszul-type submodule. It is proved that, M ∈ W H J^d(A) if and only if M admits a filtration of submodules: 0 belong to U0 belong to U1 belong to ... belong to Up = M such that all Ui/Ui-1 are d-Koszul-type modules, from which we obtain that the finitistic dimension conjecture holds in W H J^d(A) in a special case. Let M ∈ W H J^d(A). It is proved that the Koszul dual E(M) is Noetherian, Hopfian, of finite dimension in special cases, and E(M) ∈ gr0(E(A)). In particular, we show that M ∈ W H J^d(A) if and only if E(G(M)) ∈ gr0(E(A)), where G is the associated graded functor.  相似文献

We show that a non-Sasakian contact metric manifold with η-parallel torsion tensor and sectional curvatures of plane sections containing the Reeb vector field different from 1 at some point, is a (kμ)-contact manifold. In particular for the standard contact metric structure of the tangent sphere bundle the torsion tensor is η-parallel if and only if M is of constant curvature, in which case its associated pseudo-Hermitian structure is CR- integrable. Next we show that if the metric of a non-Sasakian (k, μ)-contact manifold (M, g) is a gradient Ricci soliton, then (M, g) is locally flat in dimension 3, and locally isometric to E n+1 × S n (4) in higher dimensions.   相似文献

Consider the standard non-linear regression model y i = g(x i , θ 0)+ε i , i = 1, ... ,n where g(x, θ) is a continuous function on a bounded closed region X × Θ, θ 0 is the unknown parameter vector in Θ ⊂ R p , {x 1, x 2, ... , x n } is a deterministic design of experiment and {ε1, ε2, ... , ε n } is a sequence of independent random variables. This paper establishes the existences of M-estimates and the asymptotic uniform linearity of M-scores in a family of non-linear regression models when the errors are independent and identically distributed. This result is then used to obtain the asymptotic distribution of a class of M-estimators for a large class of non-linear regression models. At the same time, we point out that Theorem 2 of Wang (1995) (J. of Multivariate Analysis, vol. 54, pp. 227–238, Corrigenda. vol. 55, p. 350) is not correct.
