The Department of Accelerator Physics and Radiation Medicine of Moscow State University’s Faculty of Physics conducts experiments on the radiation processing of food products and the development of a new technology for the combined sterilization of bone implants, based on the joint action of different sterilizing factors (radiation and sterilization) in a gaseous medium. Radiation processing of potato tubers and bone implants is performed using accelerated electron beams with energies of 1 MeV. The results from experimental investigations along these lines are presented.  相似文献

For the commercial application of pulsed power, material processing with intense pulsed particle beams is a very interesting subject. Recently, high-voltage (1-70 kV), low-pressure (1-100 Pa) transient hollow-cathode discharges turned out to be sources for pulsed intense electron beam generation suitable for this application. The remarkable parameters of these electron beams-beam currents of 50-1000 A (10-30% of the maximum discharge current) with a high energy component (mean energy of about 0.25-0.75 of maximum applied voltage) of 20-70% of the maximum beam current, power density up to 10 W/cm2, beam diameters of 0.1-3 mm, beam charge efficiency of 3-5%-captured the attention not only of the scientific community in the last decade. The electron beam is emitted during the early phases of the discharge, and only weak dependence of the high energetic peak of the beam current was found on the external capacity, which determine the development of the later high-current phases. However, the beam parameters depend on the breakdown voltage, gas pressure, and discharge geometry (including self-capacity). In this paper, the characteristics of the pulsed intense electron beams generated in two configurations-multigap pseudosparks and preionization-controlled open-ended hollow-cathode transient discharges (PCOHC)-are described. Such electron beams already were used successfully in a variety of pulsed power applications in material processing, deposition of superconducting (YBaCuO) and diamond-like thin films, microlithography, electron sources for accelerators, and intense point-like X-ray sources, and some preliminary experiments revealed new potential applications such as pumping of short-wavelength laser active media. Auger electron emission spectra from 2 MeV C+ ion excited by collisions with thin carbon foils and Ne gas are presented. The similarity of qualitative features for the C+ → C (foil) and C+ → Ne spectra indicates the similarity of ionization mechanisms for beam foil and beam gas excitation. The spectra were normalized to the lowest lying Li-like quartet state (1s 2s 2p)4P0 in carbon by comparison with time delayed foil excited electron decay-in-flight spectra. Comparison to Hartree-Fock calculated transition energies indicates that transitions in three and four electron carbon ions dominate the prompt spectra.  相似文献

NEA-GaAs based photocathodes allow the production of spin-polarized electron beams for fundamental research. We demonstrate how semiconductor properties influence salient parameters such as polarization and beam brightness. We present techniques that provide remedies for the extreme sensitivity to environmental factors. These are discussed for the specific installation that has provided spin-polarized beam at the MAMI facility during the last decade.  相似文献

A complete formulation of Vector boson-Vector boson processes ine + e ?,pp andep collisions is done including Parity violation and beam polarization effects. Single vector boson (W ±,Z, ψ) distributions inside leptons, quarks and proton as well as luminosity factors and polarization asymmetry factors are established for all (parity conserving and parity violating) helicity combinations. Non‐Gaussian beam profiles such as Bessel or annular beams enable novel approaches to modifying materials through laser‐based processing. In this review paper, properties, generation methods and emerging applications for non‐conventional beam shapes are discussed, including Bessel, annular, and vortex beams. These intensity profiles have important implications in a number of technologically relevant areas including deep‐hole drilling, photopolymerization and nanopatterning, and introduce a new dimension for materials optimization and fundamental studies of laser‐matter interactions.  相似文献

The characteristic features of the relaxation of the energy and momentum distribution functions of the electrons in a plasma produced by a low-voltage beam discharge in helium are investigated. It is established that, contrary to widely held opinion, the energy of an intense electron beam may relax due to the wave excitation. The critical currents corresponding to a jumplike transition from one relaxation mechanism to another are measured. The density of metastable helium atoms is determined from the comparative analysis of theoretical and experimental results on the structure of the energy spectrum of the electrons of an intense beam. An intense electron beam is found to become more isotropic in the course of its interaction with Langmuir waves in a collisionless plasma. The cross section for quasi-elastic collisions between the electrons and Langmuir plasmons is estimated. The wave nature of the beam-plasma mechanism for the relaxation of the anisotropic electron energy distribution function is demonstrated, and the mechanism itself is shown to come into play when the discharge current exceeds a certain critical level. The experimental threshold criterion for the energy relaxation of an intense monoenergetic beam is obtained for the first time. It is shown that the relaxation occurs in two stages: the isotropization stage, in which the beam energy decreases insignificantly, is followed by the stage in which the beam relaxes to a state with a plateau-like energy distribution function. The threshold criterion for the relaxation of the anisotropic electron energy distribution function is universal in character regardless of the cause of anisotropy.  相似文献

Spectral and amplitude–time characteristics of PMMA radiation under the impact of runaway electrons with subnanosecond duration are studied. The PMMA radiation spectra for a subnanosecond electron beam pulse duration are determined for the first time. The studies show that radiation of the band with a maximum at about 490 nm the intensity of which decreases toward the short-wave spectral region is recorded in the glow spectra. The glow intensity of this band varies proportionally to the number of electrons in the beam, which allows the possibility of using this radiation for determination of the number of high energy electrons in electron beams.  相似文献

Laser-driven, quasimonoenergetic electron beams of up to approximately 200 MeV in energy have been observed from steady-state-flow gas cells. These beams emitted within a low-divergence cone of 2.1+/-0.5 mrad FWHM display unprecedented shot-to-shot stability in energy (2.5% rms), pointing (1.4 mrad rms), and charge (16% rms) owing to a highly reproducible gas-density profile within the interaction volume. Laser-wakefield acceleration in gas cells of this type provides a simple and reliable source of relativistic electrons suitable for applications such as the production of extreme-ultraviolet undulator radiation.  相似文献

A self-similarity approach is used to obtain envelope equations for an annular beam propagating along a magnetic field, and also an electron beam injected at an angle to a magnetic field. An exact solution is constructed for the self-consistent problem of transverse oscillations of a cold annular beam in a magnetic field, and a comparison is made with approximate results from the method of envelope equations. The precision of atomic state measurements should ideally be limited by irreducible fluctuations associated with the number of atoms available, e.g. shot noise or quantum projection noise. In practice, other noise sources can limit the precision achievable; a well-known effect is the intermodulation effect, or Dick effect, which degrades the stability of atomic fountain clocks using pulsed sources. One way to beat this source of instability consists of interrogating the atoms with a microwave signal derived from exceptionally stable local oscillators, such as cryogenic oscillators, which are however bulky and not ideally suited to the constraints of space. Another way of reaching atomic-noise limited instability is to use continuous sources of cold atoms. Experimental results obtained both on a fountain standard and on an experimental Cs fountain illustrate the potential of continuous cold atomic beams for improving signal-to-noise ratio and precision of measurement. Theoretical and experimental investigations of powerful ultrasonic beams self-focusing in liquids are described. Calculations of the conditions to observe self-action as a result of sound-induced heating of liquids are reported. The effects of controlled self-action of ultrasonic waves in high-viscosity liquids are demonstrated in experiments. A hydrodynamic mechanism of the acoustic dispersion technique is developed. The rate of this process, as a function of ultrasound intensity, including the effects of self-focusing and self-transparency, is evaluated.  相似文献
