We describe an experiment in which the quadratures of the position of an harmonically-bound mirror are observed at the attometer
level. We have studied the Brownian motion of the mirror, both in the free regime and in the cold-damped regime when an external
viscous force is applied by radiation pressure. We have also studied the thermal-noise squeezing when the external force is
parametrically modulated. We have observed both the % theoretical limit of squeezing at low gain and the parametric oscillation
of the mirror for a large gain.

The novel inelastic collision properties of two-soliton interaction for an n-component coupled higher order nonlinear Schr?dinger equation are studied. Some interesting features of three soliton interactions,
related to the integrability of the n-component coupled higher order nonlinear Schr?dinger equation are also discussed.

A general scheme for reducing the center-of-mass entropy is proposed. It is based on the repetition of a cycle, composed of
three concepts: velocity selection, deceleration and irreversible accumulation. Well-known laser techniques are used to represent
these concepts: Raman π-pulse for velocity selection, STIRAP for deceleration, and a single spontaneous emission for irreversible
accumulation. No closed pumping cycle nor repeated spontaneous emissions are required, so the scheme is applicable to cool
a molecular gas. The quantum dynamics are analytically modelled using the density matrix. It is shown that during the coherent
processes the gas is translationally cooled. The internal states serve as an entropy sink, in addition to spontaneous emission.
This scheme provides new possibilities to translationally laser-cool molecules for high precision molecular spectroscopy and
interferometry.

We present the first application of Genetic Algorithms to the analysis of data from an aperiodically ordered system, high
resolution X-Ray diffraction spectra from multilayer heterostructures arranged according to a deterministic or random scheme.
This method paves the way to the solution of the “inverse problem”, that is the retrieval of the generating disorder from
the investigation of the spectra of an unknown sample having non crystallographic, non quasi-crystallographic order.

Interlayer magnetoresistance and magnetisation of the quasi-two dimensional organic metal (BEDT-TTF)8Hg4Cl12(C6H5Br)2 have been investigated in pulsed magnetic fields extending up to 60 T and 33 T, respectively. About fifteen fundamental frequencies,
composed of linear combinations of only three basic frequencies, are observed in the oscillatory spectra of the magnetoresistance.
The dependencies of the oscillation amplitude on the temperature and on the magnitude and orientation of the magnetic field
are analyzed in the framework of the conventional two-dimensional Lifshitz-Kosevitch (LK) model. This model is implemented
by damping factors which accounts for the magnetic breakthrough occurring between electron and hole orbits yielding conventional
Shubnikov-de Haas closed orbits (model of Falicov and Stachowiak) and quantum interferometers. In particular, a quantum interferometer
enclosing an area equal to the first Brillouin zone area is evidenced. The LK model consistently accounts for the temperature
and magnetic field dependence of the oscillation amplitude of this interferometer. On the contrary, although this model formally
accounts for almost all of the observed oscillatory components, it fails to give consistent quantitative data in most other
cases.

The electroweak coupling between intense neutrino beams and strongly degenerate relativistic dense electron-positron magnetoplasmas
is considered. The intense neutrino bursts interact with the plasma due to the weak Fermi interaction force, and their dynamics
is governed by a kinetic equation. Our objective here is to develop a kinetic equation for a degenerate neutrino gas and to
use that equation to derive relativistic magnetohydrodynamic equations. The latter are useful for studying numerous collective
processes when intense neutrino beams nonlinearly interact with degenerate, relativistic, dense electron-positron plasmas
in strong magnetic fields. If the number densities of the plasma particles are of the order of 1033 cm-3, the pair plasma becomes ultra-relativistic, which strongly affects the potential energy of the weak Fermi interaction. The
new system of equations allows several neutrino-driven streaming instabilities involving new types of relativistic Alfvén-like
waves. The relevance of our investigation to the early universe and supernova explosions is discussed.

We consider the effects of a shear on velocity fluctuations in a flow. The shear gives rise to a transient amplification that
not only influences the amplitude of perturbations but also their time correlations. We show that, in the presence of white
noise, time correlations of transversal velocity components are exponential and that correlations of the longitudinal components
are exponential with an algebraic prefactor. Cross correlations between transversal and downstream components are strongly
asymmetric and provide a clear indication of non-normal amplification. We suggest experimental tests of our predictions.

Two-photon photoassociation spectra in a Λ-type excitation scheme are analysed under the systematically varied experimental conditions of frequency detunings and laser
intensities. Line shape fits are presented as well as the investigation of intensity and detuning dependent line shifts. From
both we determine the attained spectroscopic precision, that is corrected for a systematic line shift due to the thermal distribution
of atoms in the trap. An energy correction for this effect is given. Information about the feasibility of generating translationally
cold molecules in a well defined rotational and vibrational level by the photoassociation process is derived from the analysis.

Entrance channel potentials in nucleus-nucleus collisions, relevant for the synthesis of superheavy elements, are systematically
studied within a semi-microscopic approach, where microscopic nuclear densities of the colliding spherical or deformed nuclei
are used in semi-classical expressions of the energy-density functional. From experimental data on fusion windows evidence
is found that the existence of pockets in the entrance channel potentials is crucial for fusion. Criteria for the choice of
the best collision systems for the synthesis of superheavy elements are discussed.

In order to clarify the physics of the crossover from a Peierls band insulator to a correlated Mott-Hubbard insulator, we
analyze ground-state and spectral properties of the one-dimensional half-filled Holstein-Hubbard model using quasi-exact numerical
techniques. In the adiabatic limit the transition is connected to the band to Mott insulator transition of the ionic Hubbard
model. Depending on the strengths of the electron-phonon coupling and the Hubbard interaction the transition is either first
order or evolves continuously across a narrow intermediate phase with finite spin, charge, and optical excitation gaps.

This paper introduces a car following model where the driving scheme takes into account the deficiencies of human decision
making in a general way. Additionally, it improves certain shortcomings of most of the models currently in use: it is stochastic
but has a continuous acceleration. This is achieved at the cost of formulating the model in terms of the time derivative of
the acceleration, making it non-Newtonian. However, the recipe for construction of bounded rational driver models proposed
in this paper seems to be very general and can be applied to most, if not all of the traditional car-following models.

We present electrical transport experiments performed on submicron hybrid devices made of a ferromagnetic conductor (Co) and
a superconducting (Al) electrode. The sample was patterned in order to separate the contributions of the Co conductor and
of the Co-Al interface. We observed a strong influence of the Al electrode superconductivity on the resistance of the Co conductor.
This effect is large only when the interface is highly transparent. We characterized the dependence of the observed resistance
decrease on temperature, bias current and magnetic field. As the differential resistance of the ferromagnet exhibits a non-trivial
asymmetry, we claim that the magnetic domain structure plays an important role in the electron transport properties of superconducting
/ ferromagnetic conductors.

We examine the equilibria of a rigid loop in the plane, characterized by an energy functional quadratic in the curvature,
subject to the constraints of fixed length and fixed enclosed area. Whereas the only non self-intersecting equilibrium corresponding
to the fixed length constraint is the circle, the area constraint gives rise to distinct equilibria labeled by an integer.
These configurations exhibit self-intersections and bifurcations as the area is reduced. In addition, not only can the Euler-Lagrange
equation be integrated to provide a quadrature for the curvature but the embedding itself can be expressed as a local function
of the curvature. Perturbations connecting equilibria are shown to satisfy a first order ODE which is readily solved. Analytical
expressions for the energy as a function of the area are obtained in the limiting regimes.

We report complex impedance measurements in an untwinned YBaCuO crystal. Our broad frequency range covers both the quasi static
response and the resistive response of the vortex lattice. It allow us to characterize the irreversibility line without the
need of any frequency dependent pinning parameters. We confirm the validity of the two modes model of vortex dynamic, and
extract both the surface critical current and the flux flow resistivity around the first order transition Tm. This latter is identified by the abrupt loss of pinning and by an unexpected step of (T) at Tm.

We propose a payoff function extending Minority Games (MG) that captures the competition between agents to make money. In
contrast with previous MG, the best strategies are not always targeting the minority but are shifting opportunistically between
the minority and the majority. The emergent properties of the price dynamics and of the wealth of agents are strikingly different
from those found in MG. As the memory of agents is increased, we find a phase transition between a self-sustained speculative
phase in which a “stubborn majority” of agents effectively collaborate to arbitrage a market-maker for their mutual benefit
and a phase where the market-maker always arbitrages the agents. A subset of agents exhibit a sustained non-equilibrium risk-return
profile.

An explicit model realizing parton-hadron duality and fitting the data is suggested. Complex nonlinear Regge trajectories
are important ingredients of the model. The inclusion of Δ and N* trajectories should account for all resonances in the direct channel. The exotic trajectory is responsible for the smooth

A pump-probe technique has been applied for measuring the lifetimes and absolute photoionization cross-sections of excited
He states. The 1s2p 1P and 1s3p 1P states of He are excited by using the 13th and the 14th harmonic, respectively, of a tunable 70 ps dye laser generated in
a Kr gas jet. The states are ionized after a varying time delay, by absorption of probe photons with energies between 1.6
and 4.5 eV. Lifetimes of τ(1s2p) = 0.57 ns and τ(1s3p) = 1.76 ns are determined with a precision of about 15%. A significant enhancement of the number of ions present in the lifetime
curves at zero time delay for pressures above 6×10-5 mbar is attributed to direct two-photon ionization of He in combination with AC Stark broadening of the excited state and
absorption of the XUV light in the medium. Absolute photoionization cross-sections from the He 1s2p 1P and He 1s3p 1P states in the threshold region are determined by measuring the saturation of the ionization process with a precision of
∼ 25%. In addition, the variation of the relative orientation between the polarization vectors of the pump and probe beams
enables the determination of partial photoionization cross-sections.
