Summary The development of a compressible boundary layer over a wedge impulsively set into motion is studied in this paper. The initial motion is independent of the leading edge effect and the solutions are those of a Rayleigh-type problem. The motion tends to an ultimate steady state of Falkner-Skan type. The equations governing the transient boundary layer from the initial steady state to the terminal steady-state change their character after certain time due to the leading edge effect and thereafter solution depends on both the end conditions. Numerical solutions are obtained through the second-order accuracy upwind scheme. The effects of the Falkner-Skan parameter and the surface temperature on the transient flow and heat transfer are also studied. It has been found that the flow separation does not occur form–0.0707 when w = 1.5 (hot wall), andm–0.118 when 0.5 (cold wall).

In this paper we study the asymptotic nonlinear stability of discrete shocks for the Lax-Friedrichs scheme for approximating general m×m systems of nonlinear hyperbolic conservation laws. It is shown that weak single discrete shocks for such a scheme are nonlinearly stable in the L p-norm for all p 1, provided that the sums of the initial perturbations equal zero. These results should shed light on the convergence of the numerical solution constructed by the Lax-Friedrichs scheme for the single-shock solution of system of hyperbolic conservation laws. If the Riemann solution corresponding to the given far-field states is a superposition of m single shocks from each characteristic family, we show that the corresponding multiple discrete shocks are nonlinearly stable in L p (P 2). These results are proved by using both a weighted estimate and a characteristic energy method based on the internal structures of the discrete shocks and the essential monotonicity of the Lax-Friedrichs scheme.

This paper studies Lp-estimates for solutions of the nonlinear, spatially homogeneous Boltzmann equation. The molecular forces considered include inverse kth-power forces with k > 5 and angular cut-off.The main conclusions are the following. Let f be the unique solution of the Boltzmann equation with f(v,t)(1 + ¦v2¦)(s 1 + /p)/2 L1, when the initial value f 0 satisfies f 0(v) 0, f 0(v) (1 + ¦v¦2)(s 1 + /p)/2 L1, for some s1 2 + /p, and f 0(v) (1 + ¦v¦2)s/2 Lp. If s 2/p and 1 < p < , then f(v, t)(1 + ¦v¦2)(s s 1)/2 Lp, t > 0. If s >2 and 3/(1+ ) < p < , thenf(v,t) (1 + ¦v¦2)(s(s 1 + 3/p))/2 Lp, t > 0. If s >2 + 2C0/C1 and 3/(l + ) < p < , then f(v,t)(1 + ¦v¦2)s/2 Lp, t > 0. Here 1/p + 1/p = 1, x y = min (x, y), and C0, C1, 0 < 1, are positive constants related to the molecular forces under consideration; = (k – 5)/ (k – 1) for kth-power forces.Some weaker conclusions follow when 1 < p 3/ (1 + ).In the proofs some previously known L-estimates are extended. The results for Lp, 1 < p < , are based on these L-estimates coupled with nonlinear interpolation.

An algebraic rate of decay of local energy, nonuniform with respect to the initial data, is established for solutions of the Dirichlet and Neumann problems for the scalar wave equation defined on the exterior V3 of two balls or of two convex bodies. That is, for given initial data f(x)=u(x), 0 and g(x)= u t (x, 0), if u solves u tt in V with either u(x, t)=0 or u n (x,t)+(x) u(x,t,)-0 ((x)0) on V, then there exists a constant T 0, depending upon (f, g), such that the local energy (the energy in any compact set) of u at t=T is bounded from above by QE(0)T –1 for TT 0, where E(0) is the total initial energy of u and Q is a positive constant, independent of u, that depends upon V.

Mathematical results are derived for the schlieren and shadowgraph contrast variation due to the refraction of light rays passing through two-dimensional compressible vortices with viscous cores. Both standard and small-disturbance solutions are obtained. It is shown that schlieren and shadowgraph produce substantially different contrast profiles. Further, the shadowgraph contrast variation is shown to be very sensitive to the vortex velocity profile and is also dependent on the location of the peak peripheral velocity (viscous core radius). The computed results are compared to actual contrast measurements made for rotor tip vortices using the shadowgraph flow visualization technique. The work helps to clarify the relationships between the observed contrast and the structure of vortical structures in density gradient based flow visualization experiments.Nomenclature a Unobstructed height of schlieren light source in cutoff plane, m - c Blade chord, m - f Focal length of schlieren focusing mirror, m - C T Rotor thrust coefficient, T/( 2 R 4) - I Image screen illumination, Lm/m 2 - l Distance from vortex to shadowgraph screen, m - n b Number of blades - p Pressure,N/m 2 - p Ambient pressure, N/m 2 - r, , z Cylindrical coordinate system - r c Vortex core radius, m - Non-dimensional radial coordinate, (r/r c ) - R Rotor radius, m - Tangential velocity, m/s - Specific heat ratio of air - Circulation (strength of vortex), m 2/s - Non-dimensional quantity, 2 82p r c 2 - Refractive index of fluid medium - 0 Refractive index of fluid medium at reference conditions - Gladstone-Dale constant, m 3/kg - Density, kg/m 3 - Density at ambient conditions, kg/m 3 - Non-dimensional density, (/ ) - Rotor solidity, (n b c/ R) - Rotor rotational frequency, rad/s

We establish the uniqueness of the positive, radially symmetric solution to the differential equation u–u+up=0 (with p>1) in a bounded or unbounded annular region in R n for all n1, with the Neumann boundary condition on the inner ball and the Dirichlet boundary condition on the outer ball (to be interpreted as decaying to zero in the case of an unbounded region). The regions we are interested in include, in particular, the cases of a ball, the exterior of a ball, and the whole space. For p=3 and n=3, this a well-known result of Coffman, which was later extended by McLeod & Serrin to general n and all values of p below a certain bound depending on n. Our result shows that such a bound on p is not needed. The basic approach used in this work is that of Coffman, but several of the principal steps in the proof are carried out with the help of Sturm's oscillation theory for linear second-order differential equations. Elementary topological arguments are widely used in the study.

An attempt is made to incorporate into a quasilinear viscoelastic constitutive equation of the Boltzmann superposition type the two mirror relations of Gleissle, as well as his relation between the steady-state first normal-stress difference and the shear viscosity curve. It is shown that the three relations can hold separately within this constitutive model, but not simultaneously, because they require a different nonlinear strain measure, namelyS 12 () = – a ( – 1) (a = 0 for 1,a = 1 for 1) for the mirroring of the viscosities,S 12 () = – a (–k 2/) (a = 0 for k, a = 1 for k) for the mirroring of the first normal-stress coefficients, and for the third relation. Here denotes the shear strain and erf the error function. Experimental data on melts of a low-density polyethylene, a high-density polyethylene and a polypropylene show that the mirror relations are passable approximations, but that the third relation meets reality surprisingly close if the right value ofk is used.

We consider the pressure and the correlation functions of a one dimensional lattice gas in which the mutual interaction decreases as r exp-n t, (r, t>0), when the interparticle distance n. We prove that such a system cannot show phase transitions of order k1 in the sense that the pressure and the correlation functions are infinitely differentiable with respect to any relevant parameter (such as the temperature or the chemical potential).

We prove the existence of planar travelling wave solutions in a reaction-diffusion-convection equation with combustion nonlinearity and self-adjoint linear part in R n, n1. The linear part involves diffusion-convection terms and periodic coefficients. These travelling waves have wrinkled flame fronts propagating with constant effective speeds in periodic inhomogeneous media. We use the method of continuation, spectral theory, and the maximum principle. Uniqueness and monotonicity properties of solutions follow from a previous paper. These properties are essential to overcoming the lack of compactness and the degeneracy in the problem.

In this paper we consider the asymptotic behavior of solutions of the quasilinear equation of filtration as t. We prove that similar solutions of the equation u t = (u )xx asymptotically represent solutions of the Cauchy problem for the full equation u t = [(u)]xx if (u) is close to u for small u.

In this paper, we show that the maximum principle holds for quasilinear elliptic equations with quadratic growth under general structure conditions. Two typical particular cases of our results are the following. On one hand, we prove that the equation (1) {ie77-01} where {ie77-02} and {ie77-03} satisfies the maximum principle for solutions in H 1()L(), i.e., that two solutions u 1, u 2H1() L() of (1) such that u 1u2 on , satisfy u 1u2 in . This implies in particular the uniqueness of the solution of (1) in H 0 1 ()L().On the other hand, we prove that the equation (2) {ie77-04} where fH–1() and g(u)>0, g(0)=0, satisfies the maximum principle for solutions uH1() such that g(u)¦Du|{2L1(). Again this implies the uniqueness of the solution of (2) in the class uH 0 1 () with g(u)¦Du|{2L1().In both cases, the method of proof consists in making a certain change of function u=(v) in equation (1) or (2), and in proving that the transformed equation, which is of the form (3) {ie77-05}satisfies a certain structure condition, which using ((v1 -v 2)+)n for some n>0 as a test function, allows us to prove the maximum principle.

Diffusion in anisotropic porous media
An experimental system was constructed in order to measure the two distinct components of the effective diffusivity tensor in transversely isotropic, unconsolidated porous media. Measurements were made for porous media consisting of glass spheres, mica particles, and disks made from mylar sheets. Both the particle geometry and the void fraction of the porous media were determined experimentally, and theoretical calculations for the two components of the effective diffusivity tensor were carried out. The comparison between theory and experiment clearly indicates that the void fraction and particle geometry are insufficient to characterize the process of diffusion in anisotropic porous media. Given a vector fieldX on a Riemannian manifoldM of dimension at least 2 whose flow leaves a probability measure invariant, the multiplicative ergodic theorem tells us that-a.s. every tangent vector possesses a Lyapunov exponent (exponential growth rate) that is equal to one of finitely many basic exponents corresponding toX and. We prove that, in the case of a simple Lyapunov spectrum, every tangent plane-a.s. possesses a rotation number that is equal to one of finitely many basic rotation numbers corresponding toX and. Rotation in a plane is measured as the time average of the infinitesimal changes of the angle between a frame moved by the linearized flow and the same frame parallel-transported by a (canonical) connection.

We present an elementary proof of an important result of Y. Brenier [Br1, Br2], namely, that vector fields in d satisfying a nondegeneracy condition admit the polar factorization (*) u(x)=(s(x)), where is a convex function and s is a measure-preserving mapping. Brenier solves a minimization problem using Monge-Kantorovich theory; whereas we turn our attention to a dual problem, whose Euler-Lagrange equation turns out to be (*).

The problem of local simulation of stagnation point heat transfer to a blunt body is solved within the framework of boundary layer theory on the assumption that the simulation subsonic high-enthalpy flow is in equilibrium outside the boundary layer on the model, while the parameters of the natural flow are in equilibrium at the outer edge of the boundary layer on the body. The parameters of the simulating subsonic flow are expressed in terms of the total enthalpyH 0, the stagnation point pressurep w and the velocityV 1 for the natural free-stream flow in the form of universal functions of the dimensionless modeling coefficients=R m * /R b * ( .<1),=V 1/2H 0 ( .<1) whereR m * and R b * are the effective radii of the model and the body at their stagnation points. Approximate conditions for modeling the heat transfer from a high-enthalpy (including hypersonic) flow to the stagnation point on a blunt body by means of hyposonic (M1) flows, corresponding to the case 21, are obtained. The possibilities of complete local simulation of hypersonic nonequilibrium heat transfer to the stagnation point on a blunt body in the hyposonic dissociated air jets of a VGU-2 100-kilowatt induction plasma generator [4, 5] are analyzed.Translated from Izvestiya Rossiiskoi Akademii Nauk, Mekhanika Zhidkosti i Gaza, No.1, pp. 172–180, January–February, 1993.

Summary TheCross equation describes the flow of pseudoplastic liquids in terms of an upper and a lower Newtonian viscosity corresponding to infinite and zero shear, and 0, and of a third material constant related to the mechanism of rupture of linkages between particles in the intermediate, non-Newtonian flow regime, Calculation of of bulk polymers is important, since it cannot be determined experimentally. The equation was applied to the melt flow data of two low density polyethylenes at three temperatures.Using data in the non-Newtonian region covering 3 decades of shear rate to extrapolate to the zero-shear viscosity resulted in errors amounting to about onethird of the measured 0 values. The extrapolated upper Newtonian viscosity was found to be independent of temperature within the precision of the data, indicating that it has a small activation energy. The 0 values were from 100 to 1,400 times larger than the values at the corresponding temperatures. The values of were large compared to the values found for colloidal dispersions and polymer solutions, but decreased with increasing temperature. This shows that shear is the main factor in reducing chain entanglements, but that the contribution of Brownian motion becomes greater at higher temperatures.

Summary The behavior of a spherical bubble near a solid wall is analysed by considering the liquid compressibility. The equation of motion of the bubble with first order correction for the effects of liquid compressibility and solid wall is derived. The equation obtained here coincides with the known result in case of L or C . Further experimental study is made on the motion of bubbles produced by a spark discharge in water. The theoretical results are in good agreement with the experiments.

We characterize the occurrence of complete or incomplete blow-up (and extinction) for a general quasilinear heat equation of the form in terms of the constitutive functions and f We assume that (u)>0 for u>0 and that f(u)0. For the positive sign + before f(u) in (HE), with f(u) superlinear as u, blow-up occurs in finite time: sup x u(x, t) as tT<. For the negative sign, we consider the case of singular absorption: f(u) as u0. Then initially positive solutions vanish at some point in finite time (extinction), and a singularity in the equation occurs there. An important aspect of blow-up or extinction problems is the possibility of having a nontrivial extension of the solution for t>T, i.e., after the singularity occurs. If such continuation exists, we say that the blow-up (extinction) is incomplete; otherwise it is called complete. Our characterization is based on the qualitative behaviour of the family of travelling-wave solutions and a proper use of the Intersection-Comparison argument. The analysis applies to other nonlinear models, like the equations with gradient-dependent diffusivity.

The two-dimensional interaction of a single vortex with a thin symmetrical airfoil and its vortex wake has been investigated in a low turbulence wind tunnel having velocity of about 2 m/s in the measuring section. The flow Reynolds number based on the airfoil chord length was 4.5 × 103. The investigation was carried out using a smoke-wire visualization technique with some support of standard hot-wire measurements. The experiment has proved that under certain conditions the vortex-airfoil-wake interaction leads to the formation of new vortices from the part of the wake positioned closely to the vortex. After the formation, the vortices rotate in the direction opposite to that of the incident vortex.List of symbols c test airfoil chord - C vortex generator airfoil chord - TA test airfoil - TE test airfoil trailing edge - TE G vortex generator airfoil trailing edge - t dimensionless time-interval measured from the vortex passage by the test airfoil trailing edge: gDt=(T-T- TEU/c - T time-interval measured from the start of VGA rotation - U free stream velocity - U vortex induced velocity fluctuation - VGA vortex generator airfoil - y distance in which the vortex passes the test airfoil - Z vortex circulation coefficient: Z=/(U · c/2) - vortex generator airfoil inclination angle - vortex circulation - vortex strength: =/2  相似文献
