Noncommutative geometry and fundamental interactions: the first ten years

This is the full text of a survey talk for nonspecialists, delivered at the 66th Annual Meeting of the German Physical Society in Leipzig, March 2002. We have not taken pains to suppress the colloquial style. References are given only insofar as they help to underline the points made; this is not a full‐blooded survey. The connection between noncommutative field theory and string theory is mentioned, but deemphasized. Contributions to noncommutative geometry made in Germany are emphasized.

My 50 years of research in particle physics

Some of my work of the last 50 years in the field of theoretical particle physics is described with particular emphasis on the motivation, the process of investigation, relationship to the work of others, and its impact. My judgment is unavoidably subjective, although I do present the comments of other researchers as much as possible.     

Vocal fundamental frequency characteristics during the first two years of life

Vocal fundamental frequency (Fo) characteristics were sampled for a group of seven young children. The children were followed longitudinally for a 12-month period, spanning preword, single-word, and multiword vocalizations. The Fo characteristics were analyzed with reference to chronological age, vocalization length, and lexicon size. Measures of average Fo and Fo variability changed little during the 12-month period for each child. A rising-falling intonation contour was the most prevalent Fo contour among the children. In general, the influence of vocalization length and language acquisition on measures of Fo was negligible. It is suggested that relative uniformity in vocal Fo exists in early vocalizations across preword and meaningful speech periods.     

Some highlights of the first four years of the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope

The Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope, formerly called GLAST, measures the cosmic gamma-ray flux in the energy range 8 keV to 〉 300 GeV. In addition to breakthrough capabilities in energy coverage and localization, the very large field of view enables observations of 20~ of the sky at any instant, and the entire sky on a timescale of a few hours. With its launch in 2008, Fermi opens a new and important window on a wide variety of phenomena, including pulsars, black holes and active galactic nuclei, gamma-ray bursts, supernova remnants and the origins of cosmic rays, and searches for hypothetical new phenomena such as particle dark matter annihilations. A brief overview and selected science highlights from the first four years are provided.     

中国近50年气候破纪录温度事件发生概率分析

随着全球变暖趋势的不断增强,破纪录温度事件（record breaking temperature events, RBTE）发生的频次呈现不断增加的特点.基于已知当前年份的温度记录,未来五年内这个记录被打破的概率是多少？即未来五年内发生新的RBTE的概率是多少？这是目前国内外学术界关注的前沿科学问题之一.文中基于概率统计模型研究在不同情景下RBTE发生概率,并与实际观测资料检测结果作对比分析,研究近50年中国RBTE发生概率的变化与全球增暖的关系.结果显示,RBTE发生概率的大小依赖于温度的增长趋势和相 关键词： 破纪录温度事件 全球增暖 极端事件     

End-Pumped Tm:YAG Ceramic Slab Lasers

Lasers from a Tm：YAG slab is end-pumped by continuous-wave output of the Tm：YAG ceramic ceramic am~e reported for the t~rst time to our best knowledge. The Tm：YAG ceramic a laser diode with central wavelength 792nm. At room temperature, the maximum power is 4.5 W, and the sloping efficiency is obtained to be 20.5%. The laser spectrum is centered at 2015nm.
