Vertex insertion approximates the crossing number of apex graphs   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
An apex graph is a graph G from which only one vertex v has to be removed to make it planar. We show that the crossing number of such G can be approximated up to a factor of Δ(Gv)⋅d(v)/2 by solving the vertex inserting problem, i.e. inserting a vertex plus incident edges into an optimally chosen planar embedding of a planar graph. Since the latter problem can be solved in polynomial time, this establishes the first polynomial fixed-factor approximation algorithm for the crossing number problem of apex graphs with bounded degree.Furthermore, we extend this result by showing that the optimal solution for inserting multiple edges or vertices into a planar graph also approximates the crossing number of the resulting graph.  相似文献

The Maximum Cardinality Search (MCS) algorithm visits the vertices of a graph in some order, such that at each step, an unvisited vertex that has the largest number of visited neighbours becomes visited. A maximum cardinality search ordering (MCS-ordering) of a graph is an ordering of the vertices that can be generated by the MCS algorithm. The visited degree of a vertex v in an MCS-ordering is the number of neighbours of v that are before v in the ordering. The visited degree of an MCS-ordering ψ of G is the maximum visited degree over all vertices v in ψ. The maximum visited degree over all MCS-orderings of graph G is called its maximum visited degree. Lucena [A new lower bound for tree-width using maximum cardinality search, SIAM J. Discrete Math. 16 (2003) 345-353] showed that the treewidth of a graph G is at least its maximum visited degree.We show that the maximum visited degree is of size O(logn) for planar graphs, and give examples of planar graphs G with maximum visited degree k with O(k!) vertices, for all kN. Given a graph G, it is NP-complete to determine if its maximum visited degree is at least k, for any fixed k?7. Also, this problem does not have a polynomial time approximation algorithm with constant ratio, unless P=NP. Variants of the problem are also shown to be NP-complete.In this paper, we also propose some heuristics for the problem, and report on an experimental analysis of them. Several tiebreakers for the MCS algorithm are proposed and evaluated. We also give heuristics that give upper bounds on the value of the maximum visited degree of a graph, which appear to give results close to optimal on many graphs from real life applications.  相似文献

A tree t-spanner of a graph G is a spanning subtree T of G in which the distance between every pair of vertices is at most t times their distance in G. Spanner problems have received some attention, mostly in the context of communication networks. It is known that for general unweighted graphs, the problem of deciding the existence of a tree t-spanner can be solved in polynomial time for t=2, while it is NP-hard for any t⩾4; the case t=3 is open, but has been conjectured to be hard. In this paper, we consider tree spanners in planar graphs. We show that even for planar unweighted graphs, it is NP-hard to determine the minimum t for which a tree t-spanner exists. On the other hand, we give a polynomial algorithm for any fixed t that decides for planar unweighted graphs with bounded face length whether there is a tree t-spanner. Furthermore, we prove that it can be decided in polynomial time whether a planar unweighted graph has a tree t-spanner for t=3.  相似文献

The path-width of a graph is the minimum value ofk such that the graph can be obtained from a sequence of graphsG1,…,Gr each of which has at mostk + 1 vertices, by identifying some vertices ofGi pairwise with some ofGi+1 (1 ≤ i < r). For every forestH it is proved that there is a numberk such that every graph with no minor isomorphic toH has path-width?k. We consider the application of local search methods to the maximum independent set problem. These methods employ a relation R on the power set of the graph's vertices that identifies a set of vertices, U, with a collection of subsets of vertices, R(U), called the neighbors of U. If each set U has only polynomially many neighbors then we say that R is polynomially bounded. Further, given a graph, G, we call a permutation of G, φ(G), to be any graph that arises from G by relabeling the vertices. Our main result is slightly stronger than the following: we construct a graph G such that, for all polynomially bounded relations, R, most permutations φ(G) of the graph contain exponentially many strict local optima that are not global optima. That is, a single graph (up to relabelling of the vertices) exists that soundly defeats all polynomially bounded relations R. Corollaries follow for 0–1 integer programming and other hard optimization problems.  相似文献

A set S of vertices in a graph G is a total dominating set if every vertex of G is adjacent to some vertex in S. The minimum cardinality of a total dominating set of G is the total domination number of G. Two vertices of G are said to be dotted (identified) if they are combined to form one vertex whose open neighborhood is the union of their neighborhoods minus themselves. We note that dotting any pair of vertices cannot increase the total domination number. Further we show it can decrease the total domination number by at most 2. A graph is total domination dot-stable if dotting any pair of adjacent vertices leaves the total domination number unchanged. We characterize the total domination dot-stable graphs and give a sharp upper bound on their total domination number. We also characterize the graphs attaining this bound.  相似文献

We present subexponential parameterized algorithms on planar graphs for a family of problems that consist in, given a graph G, finding a connected (induced) subgraph H with bounded maximum degree, while maximising the number of edges (or vertices) of H. These problems are natural generalisations of Longest Path. Our approach uses bidimensionality theory combined with novel dynamic programming techniques over branch decompositions of the input graph. These techniques can be applied to a more general family of problems that deal with finding connected subgraphs under certain degree constraints.  相似文献

An H1,{H2}-factor of a graph G is a spanning subgraph of G with exactly one component isomorphic to the graph H1 and all other components (if there are any) isomorphic to the graph H2. We completely characterise the class of connected almost claw-free graphs that have a P7,{P2}-factor, where P7 and P2 denote the paths on seven and two vertices, respectively. We apply this result to parallel knock-out schemes for almost claw-free graphs. These schemes proceed in rounds in each of which each surviving vertex eliminates one of its surviving neighbours. A graph is reducible if such a scheme eliminates every vertex in the graph. Using our characterisation, we are able to classify all reducible almost claw-free graphs, and we can show that every reducible almost claw-free graph is reducible in at most two rounds. This leads to a quadratic time algorithm for determining if an almost claw-free graph is reducible (which is a generalisation and improvement upon the previous strongest result that showed that there was a O(n5.376) time algorithm for claw-free graphs on n vertices).  相似文献

The toughness indexτ(G) of a graph G is defined to be the largest integer t such that for any S ? V(G) with |S| > t, c(G - S) < |S| - t, where c(G - S) denotes the number of components of G - S. In particular, 1-tough graphs are exactly those graphs for which τ(G) ≥ 0. In this paper, it is shown that if G is a planar graph, then τ(G) ≥ 2 if and only if G is 4-connected. This result suggests that there may be a polynomial-time algorithm for determining whether a planar graph is 1-tough, even though the problem for general graphs is NP-hard. The result can be restated as follows: a planar graph is 4-connected if and only if it remains 1-tough whenever two vertices are removed. Hence it establishes a weakened version of a conjecture, due to M. D. Plummer, that removing 2 vertices from a 4-connected planar graph yields a Hamiltonian graph.  相似文献

Let P be a collection of nontrivial simple paths on a host tree T. The edge intersection graph of P, denoted by EPT(P), has vertex set that corresponds to the members of P, and two vertices are joined by an edge if and only if the corresponding members of P share at least one common edge in T. An undirected graph G is called an edge intersection graph of paths in a tree if G=EPT(P) for some P and T. The EPT graphs are useful in network applications. Scheduling undirected calls in a tree network or assigning wavelengths to virtual connections in an optical tree network are equivalent to coloring its EPT graph.An undirected graph G is chordal if every cycle in G of length greater than 3 possesses a chord. Chordal graphs correspond to vertex intersection graphs of subtrees on a tree. An undirected graph G is weakly chordal if every cycle of length greater than 4 in G and in its complement possesses a chord. It is known that the EPT graphs restricted to host trees of vertex degree 3 are precisely the chordal EPT graphs. We prove a new analogous result that weakly chordal EPT graphs are precisely the EPT graphs with host tree restricted to degree 4. Moreover, this provides an algorithm to reduce a given EPT representation of a weakly chordal EPT graph to an EPT representation on a degree 4 tree. Finally, we raise a number of intriguing open questions regarding related families of graphs.  相似文献

A profile on a graph G is any nonempty multiset whose elements are vertices from G. The corresponding remoteness function associates to each vertex xV(G) the sum of distances from x to the vertices in the profile. Starting from some nice and useful properties of the remoteness function in hypercubes, the remoteness function is studied in arbitrary median graphs with respect to their isometric embeddings in hypercubes. In particular, a relation between the vertices in a median graph G whose remoteness function is maximum (antimedian set of G) with the antimedian set of the host hypercube is found. While for odd profiles the antimedian set is an independent set that lies in the strict boundary of a median graph, there exist median graphs in which special even profiles yield a constant remoteness function. We characterize such median graphs in two ways: as the graphs whose periphery transversal number is 2, and as the graphs with the geodetic number equal to 2. Finally, we present an algorithm that, given a graph G on n vertices and m edges, decides in O(mlogn) time whether G is a median graph with geodetic number 2.  相似文献

A proper vertex coloring of a non-oriented graph G is linear if the graph induced by the vertices of any two color classes is a forest of paths. A graph G is linearly L-list colorable if for a given list assignment L={L(v):vV(G)}, there exists a linear coloring c of G such that c(v)∈L(v) for all vV(G). If G is linearly L-list colorable for any list assignment with |L(v)|?k for all vV(G), then G is said to be linearly k-choosable. In this paper, we investigate the linear choosability for some families of graphs: graphs with small maximum degree, with given maximum average degree, outerplanar and planar graphs. Moreover, we prove that deciding whether a bipartite subcubic planar graph is linearly 3-colorable is an NP-complete problem.  相似文献

We have proved that every 3-connected planar graph G either contains a path on k vertices each of which has degree at most 5k or does not contain any path on k vertices; the bound 5k is the best possible. In this paper we survey results of the following type (known as closure results). Let P be a graph property, and let C(u,v) be a condition on two nonadjacent vertices u and v of a graph G. Then G+uv has property P if and only if G has property P. The first and now well-known result of this type was established by Bondy and Chvátal in a paper published in 1976: If u and v are two nonadjacent vertices with degree sum n in a graph G on n vertices, then G+uv is hamiltonian if and only if G is hamiltonian. Based on this result, they defined the n-closure cln (G) of a graph G on n vertices as the graph obtained from G by recursively joining pairs of nonadjacent vertices with degree sum n until no such pair remains. They showed that cln(G) is well-defined, and that G is hamiltonian if and only if cln(G) is hamiltonian. Moreover, they showed that cln(G) can be obtained by a polynomial algorithm, and that a Hamilton cycle in cln(G) can be transformed into a Hamilton cycle of G by a polynomial algorithm. As a consequence, for any graph G with cln(G)=K n (and n≥3), a Hamilton cycle can be found in polynomial time, whereas this problem is NP-hard for general graphs. All classic sufficient degree conditions for hamiltonicity imply a complete n-closure, so the closure result yields a common generalization as well as an easy proof for these conditions. In their first paper on closures, Bondy and Chvátal gave similar closure results based on degree sum conditions for nonadjacent vertices for other graph properties. Inspired by their first results, many authors developed other closure concepts for a variety of graph properties, or used closure techniques as a tool for obtaining deeper sufficiency results with respect to these properties. The gravity of a graph H in a given family of graphs H is the greatest integer n with the property that for every integer m, there exists a supergraph GH of H such that each subgraph of G, which is isomorphic to H, contains at least n vertices of degree ?m in G. Madaras and Škrekovski introduced this concept and showed that the gravity of the path Pk on k?2 vertices in the family of planar graphs of minimum degree 2 is k-2 for each k≠5,7,8,9. They conjectured that for each of the four excluded cases the gravity is k-3. In this paper we show that this holds.  相似文献

Given a planar graph G, what is the largest subset of vertices of G that induces a forest? Albertson and Berman [2] conjectured that every planar graph has an induced subgraph on at least half of the vertices that is a forest. For bipartite planar graphs, Akiyama and Wanatabe [1] conjectured that there is always an induced forest of size at least 5n/8. Here we prove that every triangle-free (and therefore every bipartite) planar graph on n vertices has an induced forest of size at least (17n+24)/32.  相似文献

An arc of a graph is an oriented edge and a 3-arc is a 4-tuple (v, u, x, y) of vertices such that both (v, u, x) and (u, x, y) are paths of length two. The 3-arc graph of a graph G is defined to have vertices the arcs of G such that two arcs uv, xy are adjacent if and only if (v, u, x, y) is a 3-arc of G. We prove that any connected 3-arc graph is hamiltonian, and all iterative 3-arc graphs of any connected graph of minimum degree at least three are hamiltonian. As a corollary we obtain that any vertex-transitive graph which is isomorphic to the 3-arc graph of a connected arc-transitive graph of degree at least three must be hamiltonian. This confirms the conjecture, for this family of vertex-transitive graphs, that all vertex-transitive graphs with finitely many exceptions are hamiltonian. We also prove that if a graph with at least four vertices is Hamilton-connected, then so are its iterative 3-arc graphs.  相似文献

The nonplanar vertex deletion or vertex deletion vd(G) of a graph G is the smallest nonnegative integer k, such that the removal of k vertices from G produces a planar graph G. In this case G is said to be a maximum planar induced subgraph of G. We solve a problem proposed by Yannakakis: find the threshold for the maximum degree of a graph G such that, given a graph G and a nonnegative integer k, to decide whether vd(G)?k is NP-complete. We prove that it is NP-complete to decide whether a maximum degree 3 graph G and a nonnegative integer k satisfy vd(G)?k. We prove that unless P=NP there is no polynomial-time approximation algorithm with fixed ratio to compute the size of a maximum planar induced subgraph for graphs in general. We prove that it is Max SNP-hard to compute vd(G) when restricted to a cubic input G. Finally, we exhibit a polynomial-time -approximation algorithm for finding a maximum planar induced subgraph of a maximum degree 3 graph.  相似文献

For a (simple) graph G, the signless Laplacian of G is the matrix A(G)+D(G), where A(G) is the adjacency matrix and D(G) is the diagonal matrix of vertex degrees of G; the reduced signless Laplacian of G is the matrix Δ(G)+B(G), where B(G) is the reduced adjacency matrix of G and Δ(G) is the diagonal matrix whose diagonal entries are the common degrees for vertices belonging to the same neighborhood equivalence class of G. A graph is said to be (degree) maximal if it is connected and its degree sequence is not majorized by the degree sequence of any other connected graph. For a maximal graph, we obtain a formula for the characteristic polynomial of its reduced signless Laplacian and use the formula to derive a localization result for its reduced signless Laplacian eigenvalues, and to compare the signless Laplacian spectral radii of two well-known maximal graphs. We also obtain a necessary condition for a maximal graph to have maximal signless Laplacian spectral radius among all connected graphs with given numbers of vertices and edges.  相似文献
