Two types of non-close-packed colloidal crystal films were prepared by etching the films made of polystyrene nanospheres using a hyperthermal neutral beam of oxygen gas. Etching without sintering above glass transition temperature of the polymer particles resulted in the non-close-packed structure of the nanospheres, in which polystyrene nanospheres in different lattice planes touched each other due to the reduction in the size of the nanospheres that occurred during the etching process. In contrast, a different non-close-packed structure with inter-connecting networks between etched nanospheres was generated by annealing of the colloidal crystal and a subsequent etching process. The photonic bandgap could be tuned during this dry etching of colloidal photonic crystals. This connected open structure could be used as a template for a silica inverse opal by chemical vapor deposition. An alternative dry etching process, reactive ion etching, mainly affected the morphology of particles near the top surface, and only a slight change in the stop band position of the colloidal crystal film was observed.  相似文献

Chalcogenide opal and inverse opal photonic crystals were successfully fabricated by low-cost and low-temperature solution-based process, which is well developed in polymer films processing. Highly ordered silica colloidal crystal films were successfully infilled with nano-colloidal solution of the high refractive index As(30)S(70) chalcogenide glass by using spin-coating method. The silica/As-S opal film was etched in HF acid to dissolve the silica opal template and fabricate the inverse opal As-S photonic crystal. Both, the infilled silica/As-S opal film (Δn ~ 0.84 near λ=770 nm) and the inverse opal As-S photonic structure (Δn ~ 1.26 near λ=660 nm) had significantly enhanced reflectivity values and wider photonic bandgaps in comparison with the silica opal film template (Δn ~ 0.434 near λ=600 nm). The key aspects of opal film preparation by spin-coating of nano-colloidal chalcogenide glass solution are discussed. The solution fabricated "inorganic polymer" opal and the inverse opal structures exceed photonic properties of silica or any organic polymer opal film. The fabricated photonic structures are proposed for designing novel flexible colloidal crystal laser devices, photonic waveguides and chemical sensors.  相似文献

A ternary system, consisting of air, an air-core/dense-silica-shell core-shell particle, and liquids has been used to fabricate an inverse opal structure with low fill factor, high refractive index contrast, and reversible tuning capabilities of the bandgap spectral position. The original close-packed opal structure is a ternary self-assembled photonic crystal from monodisperse and spherical polystyrene-core/silica-shell colloidal particles with air as the void material. Calcination removed the polystyrene and converted the core-shell particles to hollow spheres with a dense shell. In a final step, liquid is infiltrated only in the voids between the hollow spheres, but does not penetrate in the shell. This allows facile and reversible tuning of the bandgap properties in an inverse opal structure.  相似文献

We report on the fabrication of high-quality opaline photonic crystals from large silica spheres (diameter of 890 nm), self-assembled in hydrophilic trenches of silicon wafers by using a novel technique coined a combination of "lifting and stirring". The achievements reported here comprise a spatial selectivity of opal crystallization without special treatment of the wafer surface, a filling of the trenches up to the top, leading to a spatially uniform film thickness, particularly an absence of cracks within the size of the trenches, and finally a good 3D order of the opal lattice even in trenches with a complex confined geometry, verified using optical measurements. The opal lattice was found to match the pattern precisely in width as well as depth, providing an important step toward applications of opals in integrated optics.  相似文献

For the application of colloidal crystal films as "photonic band gap" materials, their domain size and thickness are significant. The substrate withdrawing speed, the colloidal suspension volume fraction, and the colloidal suspension temperature have been studied for the domain size and thickness controls of colloidal crystals in this study. Stable dispersions of monodispersed polystyrene spheres with a diameter of 245 nm were synthesized according to a general emulsion polymerization for colloidal crystal films. By experimental results and the theoretical relationship between the number of layers and other parameters, we could know that the water bridge between colloidal spheres (which is formed by capillary force) influences the number of colloidal crystal layers significantly.  相似文献

Films of opal, a colloidal crystalline lattice with closely packed structure, are anticipated to become a fundamental material in photonic crystal engineering. One of the technological issues is forming the opal film with a flat and uniform surface over a large area. This article describes a new and simple method for forming an opal film without special equipment. The opal film is formed by drying a colloidal suspension covered on a hydrophilic solid substrate. In the conventional method, a ring-shaped opal usually forms at the edge (contact line) of the suspension on the substrate. The new method improved the process of drying the colloidal suspension free from the ring formation. The driving force of this ring formation is based on capillary flow in the suspension from inside to outside because of the high evaporation rate at the contact line. To prevent capillary flow, the contact line of the suspension was covered with hydrophobic silicone liquid. As a result, ring formation was depressed and flat opal films with uniform structure were formed. The structure comprised cubic closely packed (111) planes, and the opal films were grown to grain sizes larger than 200 microm. In addition, the coating area of the opal film was greater than 75 cm2 using a 4-in. silicone wafer. This new method should be useful for coating high-quality opal film over large areas on solid substrates.  相似文献

An array of the colloidal photonic crystals was directly fabricated using an ink-jet printing. The colloidal ink droplets containing the monodispersed polystyrene latex particles were selectively deposited on a hydrophobic surface. Solvent evaporation from each ink droplet leads to a formation of microdome-shaped colloidal assembles of close-packed structures. Microspectroscopic analysis has confirmed that the individual assembly serves as a photonic crystal and its optical properties can be correlated with the microstructural features. Unlike other techniques of patterned growth of colloidal photonic crystal, the substrate does not need to be patterned first and no template is needed in the direct writing by the ink-jet printing. Using our strategy, we have rapidly produced the colloidal photonic crystal microarrays composed of different-sized spheres addressably patterned on the same substrate.  相似文献

Fabrication of BaTiO3 Inverse Opal Photonic Crystal   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The colloidal crystal template or opal with a closed-packed face centered cubic (fcc) lattice, was prepared from monodisperse polystyrene (PS) spheres by gravity sedimentation. The template was used for the generation of photonic crystal. The template provided void space for infiltration of liquid precursor composed of titanium butyloxide, barium acetate, ethanol, and acetic acid. The opal composite was hydrolyzed, dried, sintered by heating for completely removing PS spheres to form BaTiO3 photonic crystals with inverse opal structure. The PS spheres were replaced by air spheres, which interconnected each other through the windows on the BaTiO3 wall.So both the BaTiO3 wall and air void constitute continuous phases.  相似文献

Inverse opal films with unique optical properties have potential as photonic crystal materials and have stimulated wide interest in recent years. Herein, iridescent hybrid polystyrene/nanoparticle macroporous films have been prepared by using the breath‐figure method. The honeycomb‐patterned thin films were prepared by casting gold nanoparticle‐doped polystyrene solutions in chloroform at high relative humidity. Highly ordered hexagonal arrays of monodisperse pores with an average diameter of 880 nm are obtained. To account for the observed features, a microscopic phase separation of gold nanoparticles is proposed to occur in the breath‐figure formation. That is, individual gold nanoparticles adsorb at the solution/water interface and effectively stabilize condensed water droplets on the solution surface in a hexagonal array. Alternatively, at high nanoparticle concentrations the combination of breath‐figure formation and nanoparticle phase separation leads to hierarchical structures with spherical aggregates under a honeycomb monolayer. The films show large features in both the visible and NIR regions that are attributed to a combination of nanoparticle and ordered‐array absorptions. Organic ligand‐stabilized CdSe/CdS quantum dots or Fe3O4 nanoparticles may be loaded into the honeycomb structure to further modify the films. These results demonstrate new methods for the fabrication and functionalization of inverse opal films with potential applications in photonic and microelectronic materials.  相似文献

Colloidal crystal films have been fabricated on solid substrates with a horizontal deposition method. Scanning electron microscope images showed that the colloidal crystal films exhibit ordered face-centered cubic structures in large domains. Optical measurements demonstrated the presence of photonic band gap along the crystallographic [111] direction. The fabrication method described in this paper allows one to rapidly fabricate colloidal crystal films of different thicknesses, which can be controlled by varying colloidal suspension concentration or volume. In addition, the method also works well for growing colloidal crystal films on a hydrophilic solid substrate with a rough surface. Furthermore, the fabrication of colloidal crystal heterostructures has been demonstrated. An inward-growing mechanism responsible for self-assembly of colloidal spheres on horizontal substrates has been proposed to interpret the observed experimental results.  相似文献

High-quality polystyrene (PS) colloidal photonic crystals in large area were fabricated in 24 h via a capillary-enhanced process. Then, the photonic crystals with core-shell structure were obtained by incorporating silica nanoparticles into the interstitial space of opal template via a dipping process. The filling ratio (Vsilica) of interstitial space could be manipulated by dipping colloidal crystals into suspensions with different concentrations of silica nanoparticles, which in turn renders the obtained core-shell photonic crystals. The absorptive peak of opal without dipping process is at 445 nm as measured by UV–vis spectrometry. The filling ratios of 0.130, 0.167 and 0.253 can be calculated according to the modified Bragg's Law, which corresponds to the absorptive peaks for core-shell opals at 453, 463 and 469 nm obtained from suspensions with silica nanoparticles of 0.017, 0.122, and 0.244 wt%, respectively. Therefore, by using this dipping process, the characteristic absorption wavelength for photonic crystal will be varied easily, efficiently and cost effectively than that by traditional methods for constructing opal from monodispersed colloids of different diameters.  相似文献

The colloidal crystal template or opal with a closed-packed face-centered cubic (fcc) lattice was prepared from monodisperse polystyrene (PS) spheres by vertical sedimentation. The template provided void space for infiltration of monomer precursor composed of acrylate acid, acrylamide and ammonium persulfate,as well as microgel from the subsequent copolymerization. The sample was immersed in dimethylbenzene for completely removing PS spheres to form PAM inverse opal hydrogels (IOH_(PAM)) or PAM/PAA inverse opal hydrogels (IOH_(PAM/PAA)) photonic crystals. The PS spheres were replaced by air spheres, which interconnected each other through the windows. The study of responses to pH show that there are two peaks for both IOH_(PAM) and IOH_(PAM/PAA) films, but the IOH(PAM/PAA) peaks shift to higher pH,and the peaks are independent with the AA content. Inverse opal films of molecularly imprinted polymers (MIP) were elaborated using the colloidal crystal template method. The colloidal crystals of silica particles were built by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique, allowing a perfect control of the film thickness. Polymerization in the interspaces of the colloidal crystal in the presence of bisphenol A (BPA) and removal of the used template provides 3D-ordered macroporous methacrylic acid-based hydrogel films in which nanocavities derived from bisphenol A are distributed within the thin walls of the inverse opal hydrogel. The equilibrium swelling properties of the nonimprinted (NIPs) and molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) were studied as a function of pH and bisphenol A concentration, while the molecular structures of the bulk hydrogels were analyzed using a cross-linked network structure theory. This study showed an increase in nanopore (mesh) size in the MIPs after BPA extraction as compared to NIPs, in agreement with the presence of nanocavities left by the molecular imprints of the template molecule. The resulting inverse opals were found to display large responses to external stimuli (pH or BPA) with Bragg diffraction peak shifts depending upon the hydrogel film thickness. The film thickness was therefore shown to be a critical parameter for improving the sensing capacities of inverse opal hydrogel films deposited on a substrate.  相似文献

A three-dimensionally ordered array of close-packed colloidal spheres, a photonic crystal structure in which the refractive index of the medium interstitial lattice in a colloidal crystal spatially changes in the [111] crystallographic axis, is demonstrated. The colloidal photonic crystal structure with refractive index chirping was produced by infiltration of a monomer and organic dopants with a high refractive index into a silica opal, followed by interfacial gel polymerization. The resulting photonic crystal structure has a gradually varying stop band at each different (111) plane in the face-centered cubic (fcc) crystal structure at a normal incidence. This novel structure exhibited optical characteristics that have band-gap broadening by the superposition of stop bands at each plane of the crystal with different dielectric functions. Moreover, the refractive index perturbation in the [111] fcc opal also showed a defect state within a pseudo-photonic band gap. This new type of photonic crystal structure should be useful for the band-gap engineering of photonic-band-gap materials.  相似文献

In this work, the preparation of highly thermoresponsive and fully reversible stretch‐tunable elastomeric opal films featuring switchable structural colors is reported. Novel particle architectures based on poly(diethylene glycol methylether methacrylate‐co‐ethyl acrylate) (PDEGMEMA‐co‐PEA) as shell polymer are synthesized via seeded and stepwise emulsion polymerization protocols. The use of DEGMEMA as comonomer and herein established synthetic strategies leads to monodisperse soft shell particles, which can be directly processed to opal films by using the feasible melt‐shear organization technique. Subsequent UV crosslinking strategies open access to mechanically stable and homogeneous elastomeric opal films. The structural colors of the opal films feature mechano‐ and thermoresponsiveness, which is found to be fully reversible. Optical characterization shows that the combination of both stimuli provokes a photonic bandgap shift of more than 50 nm from 560 nm in the stretched state to 611 nm in the fully swollen state. In addition, versatile colorful patterns onto the colloidal crystal structure are produced by spatial UV‐induced crosslinking by using a photomask. This facile approach enables the generation of spatially cross‐linked switchable opal films with fascinating optical properties. Herein described strategies for the preparation of PDEGMEMA‐containing colloidal architectures, application of the melt‐shear ordering technique, and patterned crosslinking of the final opal films open access to novel stimuli‐responsive colloidal crystal films, which are expected to be promising materials in the field of security and sensing applications.

Summary: A facile method to fabricate colloidal crystal films with tunable wettability from an amphiphilic material polystyrene‐block‐poly(methyl methacrylate)‐block‐poly(acrylic acid) is presented. The wettability of the film can be tuned from superhydrophilic (CA, 0°) to superhydrophobic (CA, 150.2°) by varying the assembly temperature, while the position of the photonic bandgap of the colloidal crystal films remains virtually unchanged. The method could open new application fields of colloidal crystals in diverse environments.
