A modification of the Lyons-Sullivan discretization of positive harmonic functions on a Riemannian manifold M is proposed. For κ ⩾ 0 and r0 > 0 let ℳ(n, κ, r0) be the set of all connected, compact n-dimensional Riemannian manifolds (Mn, g) with Ricci (M, g) ⩾ −(n−1) κ g and Inj (M) ⩾ r0. We study the relation between the kth eigenvalue λk(M) of the Laplacian associated to (Mn,g), Δ = −div(grad), and the kth eigenvalue λk(X) of a combinatorial Laplacian associated to a discretization X of M. We show that there exist constants c, C > 0 (depending only on n, κ and r0) such that for all M ∈ ℳ(n, κ, r0) and X a discretization of for all k < |X|. Then, we obtain the same kind of result for two compact manifolds M and N ∈ ℳ(n, κ, r0) such that the Gromov–Hausdorff distance between M and N is smaller than some η > 0. We consider the M(t)/M(t)/m/m queue, where the arrival rate λ(t) and service rate μ(t) are arbitrary (smooth) functions of time. Letting pn(t) be the probability that n servers are occupied at time t (0≤ nm, t > 0), we study this distribution asymptotically, for m→∞ with a comparably large arrival rate λ(t) = O(m) (with μ(t) = O(1)). We use singular perturbation techniques to solve the forward equation for pn(t) asymptotically. Particular attention is paid to computing the mean number of occupied servers and the blocking probability pm(t). The analysis involves several different space-time ranges, as well as different initial conditions (we assume that at t = 0 exactly n0 servers are occupied, 0≤ n0m). In the paper we consider a closed Riemannian manifold M with a time-dependent Riemannian metric g ij (t) evolving by ? t g ij  = ?2S ij , where S ij is a symmetric two-tensor on (M,g(t)). We obtain the time dependent probabilities for the joint distribution of the number of arrivals and departures in [0,t] for theM/M ij/1 queue. This queue has the exponential service with parametersμ ij, depending on the types of the successive customers attended. We provide an intuitive interpretation of the solution and also present some numerical results, including time dependent event probabilities and queue length.  相似文献

We prove that certain Riemannian manifolds can be isometrically embedded inside Calabi–Yau manifolds. For example, we prove that given any real-analytic one parameter family of Riemannian metrics g t on a three-dimensional manifold Y with volume form independent of t and with a real-analytic family of nowhere vanishing harmonic one forms θ t , then (Y,g t ) can be realized as a family of special Lagrangian submanifolds of a Calabi–Yau manifold X. We also prove that certain principal torus bundles can be equivariantly and isometrically embedded inside Calabi-Yau manifolds with torus action. We use this to construct examples of n-parameter families of special Lagrangian tori inside n + k-dimensional Calabi–Yau manifolds with torus symmetry. The dynamics of perturbations to the Rossby-Haurwitz (RH) wave is analytically analyzed. These waves, being of great meteorological importance, are exact solutions to the nonlinear vorticity equation describing the motion of an ideal incompressible fluid on a rotating sphere. Each RH wave belongs to a space H 1H n , where H n is the subspace of homogeneous spherical polynomials of degree n. It is shown that any perturbation of the RH wave evolves in such a way that its energy K(t) and enstrophy η(t) decrease, remain constant, or increase simultaneously. A geometric interpretation of variations in the perturbation energy is given. A conservation law for arbitrary perturbations is obtained and used to classify all the RH-wave perturbations in four invariant sets, M n , M + n , H n , and M 0 nH n , depending on the value of their mean spectral number χ(t) = η(t)/K(t). The energy cascade of growing (or decaying) perturbations has opposite directions in the sets M n and M + n due to the hyperbolic dependence between K(t) and χ(t). A factor space with a factor norm of the perturbations is introduced, using the invariant subspace H n of neutral perturbations as the zero factor class. While the energy norm controls the perturbation part belonging to H n , the factor norm controls the perturbation part orthogonal to H n . It is shown that in the set M n (χ(t) < n(n + 1)), any nonzonal RH wave of subspace H 1H n (n ≥ 2) is Lyapunov unstable in the energy norm. This instability has nothing in common with the orbital (Poincaré) instability and is caused by asynchronous oscillations of two almost coinciding RH-wave solutions. It is also shown that the exponential instability is possible only in the invariant set M 0 nH n . A necessary condition for this instability is given. The condition states that the spectral number η(t) of the amplitude of each unstable mode must be equal to n(n + 1), where n is the RH wave degree. The growth rate is estimated and the orthogonality of the unstable normal modes to the RH wave are shown in two Hilbert spaces. We consider the pseudo-Euclidean space (R n , g), with n ≥ 3 and g ij = δ ij ε i , ε i = ±1, where at least one ε i = 1 and nondiagonal tensors of the form T = Σ ij f ij dx i dx j such that, for ij, f ij (x i , x j ) depends on x i and x j . We provide necessary and sufficient conditions for such a tensor to admit a metric ḡ, conformal to g, that solves the Ricci tensor equation or the Einstein equation. Similar problems are considered for locally conformally flat manifolds. Examples are provided of complete metrics on R n , on the n-dimensional torus T n and on cylinders T k ×R n-k , that solve the Ricci equation or the Einstein equation. We show that ifG is a semisimple algebraic group defined overQ and Γ is an arithmetic lattice inG:=G R with respect to theQ-structure, then there exists a compact subsetC ofG/Γ such that, for any unipotent one-parameter subgroup {u t} ofG and anyg∈G, the time spent inC by the {u t}-trajectory ofgΓ, during the time interval [0,T], is asymptotic toT, unless {g −1utg} is contained in aQ-parabolic subgroup ofG. Some quantitative versions of this are also proved. We simplify the Steinberg presentation of SL n (F d ), where n≥1 and F d is any finite field with d elements. That presentation has the elementary matrices e ij (r), with i,j∈{1,...,n}, i≠=j and rF d , as generators, and (E1)–(E3), described at the opening of this work, as relations. The presentation that we shall obtain reduces the number of generators e ij (r) and relations (E1)–(E3). In particular, relations (E3) are considerably reduced. On any compact Riemannian manifold (M,g) of dimension n, the L 2-normalized eigenfunctions φ λ satisfy ||fl||Cl\fracn-12\|\phi_{\lambda}\|_{\infty}\leq C\lambda^{\frac{n-1}{2}} where −Δφ λ =λ 2 φ λ . The bound is sharp in the class of all (M,g) since it is obtained by zonal spherical harmonics on the standard n-sphere S n . But of course, it is not sharp for many Riemannian manifolds, e.g., flat tori ℝ n /Γ. We say that S n , but not ℝ n /Γ, is a Riemannian manifold with maximal eigenfunction growth. The problem which motivates this paper is to determine the (M,g) with maximal eigenfunction growth. In an earlier work, two of us showed that such an (M,g) must have a point x where the set ℒ x of geodesic loops at x has positive measure in S*xMS^{*}_{x}M. We strengthen this result here by showing that such a manifold must have a point where the set ℛ x of recurrent directions for the geodesic flow through x satisfies |{ℛ} x |>0. We also show that if there are no such points, L 2-normalized quasimodes have sup-norms that are o(λ (n−1)/2), and, in the other extreme, we show that if there is a point blow-down x at which the first return map for the flow is the identity, then there is a sequence of quasimodes with L -norms that are Ω(λ (n−1)/2).  相似文献

Let M be a quantizable symplectic manifold. If ψt is a loop in the group {Ham}(M) of Hamiltonian symplectomorphisms of M and A is a 2k-cycle in M, we define a symplectic action κA(ψ)∊ U(1) around ψt(A), which is invariant under deformations of ψ, and such that κA(ψ) depends only on the homology class of A. Using properties of κA( ) we determine a lower bound for ♯π1(Ham(O)), where O is a quantizable coadjoint orbit of a compact Lie group. In particular we prove that ♯π1(Ham(CPn)) ≥ n+1.
