A study was carried out on the kinetics of the dehydration of 2-propanol on activated bone charcoal (ABC) with supported acid sites. The rate-limiting step is the loss of water from the alcohol molecule adsorbed on the acid site. The sites containing the minimum amount of water are the most active. The reaction on these sites presumably proceeds through a concerted mechanism, which is possible at sufficiently high temperatures (above 120 °C). A study has been carried out of the adsorption of benzoic acid from cyclohexane solution onto the hydrophilic surface of calcite.

We determined initially the chemical and mineral composition of the solid, its specific surface area and its granulometry. This was followed by the determination of the enthalpies of immersion of calcite in different solvents. These thermodynamic properties gave information on the energetics of calcite—solvent interactions. In this way, we could construct a scale of affinities of the different organic molecules and water for the calcite surface. It was noted that the enthalpies were higher in unsaturated than in saturated organic solvents, and higher in water than in the organic solvents.

The adsorption isotherms and the differential molar enthalpies of displacement were determined in the presence and the absence of water. The role played by water in the adsorption of polar organic molecules from the oil phase has not been clearly explained previously. In this paper, we indicate how the presence of water can modify the adsorption of aromatic compounds on the surface of calcite. As regards the adsorption isotherms, the presence of water essentially increases the amount of adsorption. The results of the calorimetric studies were found to be surprising; we observed that the differential molar enthalpies of displacement were endothermic.

Similar experiments were carried out with dolomite and n-heptane solution and the results compared with those obtained with calcite and cyclohexane, leading to the formulation of a general model concerning the adsorption of small polar organic molecules from organic solvents onto the surfaces of the carbonates.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

This study reports the removal of organic matters from phosphoric acid using waste-produced bio-charcoal structures. Particularly, the freshly made bio-char species via pyrolysis and two sub-driven acids activated charcoals were applied during the removal process. The treated charcoal with hydrochloric and nitric acids had attained a higher adsorption rate for organic matters than that of the non-treated one. Removal percentages of 70% and 60% were, respectively, attained by acid-modified chars. The kinetics of the adsorption process was fitted via pseudo-first/second-order and Morris–Weber models. The thermodynamic parameters of the presented sorption process indicate that organic matter removal has been endothermic, physical and spontaneous.  相似文献

Activated carbon was prepared from the sewage sludge of municipal wastewater treatment plant by chemical activation (activation reagent is ZnCl2) and was used for the adsorption of dye (reactive brilliant red K-2BP). The impact of adsorbent amount, adsorption time and pH value on adsorption effect, the adsorption kinetics, and the adsorption thermodynamics were discussed according to batch adsorption tests. The results indicated that the activated carbon developed from sewage sludge (ACSS), which was mesoporous, possessed opened porous structures. The iodine number of the ACSS was 326 mg·g−1. The rate of achievement was 51.31%. The BET surface area was 298 m2·g−1 and the contents of heavy metals in the leachate didn’t exceed the contents limit. The adsorption kinetics of reactive brilliant red K-2BP on the ACSS was accorded with the two-step kinetics rate equation and pseudo-second-order kinetics equation. Compared to the Freundlich isotherm equation, the Langmuir isotherm equation showed better applicability for the adsorption. The adsorption which was favorable was an endothermic (enthalpy ΔH > 0) and spontaneous (free energy ΔG < 0) process and was accompanied by an increase in entropy (ΔS > 0). __________ Translated from Journal of Shandong University (Natural Science), 2007, 42(3): 64–70 [译自: 山东大学学报(理学版)]  相似文献

The influence of temperature on the composition of mixed monolayer formed at the methyl alcohol/acetic acid aqueous solution was examined by surface tension measurements. Surface tension of various two-component solutions was obtained at 10, 20 and 28 °C temperatures in the 0–0.5 M range of bulk concentration of alcohol and acid, respectively. Three independent methods, i.e., the Gibbs adsorption equation (GAE), regular solution approximation (RSA) and Butler adsorption isotherm (BAI) were applied to calculate surface composition of the methyl alcohol/ acetic acid mixed monolayer. It was shown that in the temperature range of 10–28 °C the surface molar fraction of the solutes remained constant for the fixed bulk concentration of alcohol and acid. Additionally, based on the RSA and BAI methods, we showed there were no interactions between solute molecules in the mixed monolayer in the studied range of concentrations. The adsorption ofn-heptane,n-octane,n-nonane, andn-decane on untreated wood fiber and wood fiber treated with maleated polypropylene was studied by inverse gas chromatography (IGC) at infinite dilution or zero surface coverage. The specific retention volume increased with increasing probe chain length, decreased with increasing column temperature, and increased with increasing maleated polypropylene concentration. The enthalpy of adsorption increased with increasing chain length of the probe vapors. The enthalpy of adsorption remained constant after the treatment of wood fiber. The London dispersive component of the surface free energy decreased with the column temperature and showed no dependency with either the type of wood fiber or the maleated polypropylene concentration.  相似文献

Surface parameters of the activated charcoal were measured using precise instrumental techniques for dehydration, carbon content, trace metals impurities, anions, bulk, tap and true densities, surface area, pore volume, porosity and average particle diameter. The adsorption of Sr2+, Ce3+, Sm3+, Gd3+, Th4+ and UO 2 2+ ions on activated charcoal from aqueous solution was studied as a function of temperature. Thermodynamic parameters such as HH 0 and S 0 were calculated from the slopes and intercepts of the linear variation of lnK 1 vs. 1/T, whereK 3 is obtained from Langmuir equation. The results show endothermic heats of adsorption, but negative free energy values indicate that the adsorption process of metal ions on activated charcoal is favored at high temperature. The value of isosteric heat of adsorption, calculated from the Clausius-Clapeyron equation, shows that the surface of the activated charcoal is heterogeneous with respect to activity. A wavelength dispersive x-ray fluorescence spectrometer was used for measuring the concentration of metal ions.  相似文献

In this research, a novel adsorbent gold nanoparticle loaded on activated carbon (Au-NP-AC) was synthesized by a low cost in a routine protocol. Subsequently, this novel material characterization and identification are followed by different techniques such as th eBruner–Emmet–Teller (BET) theory, scanning electron microcopy, and transmission electron microscopy analysis. Unique properties such as high BET surface area (>1229.55 m2/g) and low pore size (<22.46 Å) and average particle size lower than 48.798 Å in addition to high reactive atom and presence of various functional groups make it possible for efficient removal of sunset yellow (SY) and methyl orange (MO). Generally, the influence of variables including amount of adsorbent, initial dyes concentration, contact time, temperature on dyes removal percentage has great effect on removal percentage that their influence was optimized. The kinetic of proposed adsorption processes efficiently followed, pseudo-second-order and intra-particle diffusion approach. The equilibrium data of the removal strongly follow the Langmuir monolayer adsorption with high adsorption capacity in a short amount of time. This novel adsorbent by small amount (0.01 g) really is applicable for removal of high amount of both dyes (MO and SY) in short time (<18 minutes). Equilibrium data fitted well with the Langmuir model at all amount of adsorbent, while maximum adsorption capacity for MO 161.29 mg g?1 and for SY 227.27 for 0.005 g of Au-NP-AC.  相似文献

Activated carbon from lemon wood (AC) and ZnO nanoparticles loaded on activated carbon (ZnO‐NP‐AC) were prepared and their efficiency for effective acid yellow 199 (AY 199) removal under various operational conditions was investigated. The dependence of removal efficiency on variables such as AY 199 concentration, amount of adsorbent and contact time was optimized using response surface methodology and Design‐Expert. ZnO nanoparticles and ZnO‐NP‐AC were studied using various techniques such as scanning electron microscopy, X‐ray diffraction and energy‐dispersive X‐ray analysis. The optimum pH was studied using one‐at‐a‐time method to achieve maximum dye removal percentage. Small amounts of the proposed adsorbents (0.025 and 0.025 g) were sufficient for successful removal of AY 199 in short times (4.0 and 4.0 min) with high adsorption capacity (85.51 and 116.29 mg g?1 for AC and ZnO‐NPs‐AC, respectively). Fitting the empirical equilibrium data to several conventional isotherm models at optimum conditions indicated the appropriateness of the Langmuir model with high correlation coefficient (0.999 and 0.978 for AC and ZnO‐NPs‐AC, respectively) for representation and explanation of experimental data. Kinetics evaluation of experiments at various time intervals revealed that adsorption processes can be well predicted and fitted by pseudo‐second‐order and Elovich models. This study revealed that the combination of ZnO nanoparticles and AC following simple loading led to significant improvement in the removal process in short adsorption time which was enhanced by mixing the media via sonication.  相似文献

Water-insoluble amines (dissolved in an organic solvent/organic solvent mixture) are often used for the extractive recovery of carboxylic acids from aqueous phases. The basic design of the extraction process requires a thermodynamic framework that should be able to describe the liquid–liquid phase equilibrium not only in the phase forming systems (water + carboxylic acid + organic solvent + reactive extractant), but also when the aqueous feed phase contains additionally small amounts of strong electrolytes. Even small amounts of strong electrolytes might considerably reduce the recovery rate. In part I of this series such a model was presented and discussed for methyl isobutyl ketone as organic solvent and tri-n-octylamine (TnOA) as the chemical extractant. The present part II is to demonstrate that the procedures/methods described for methyl isobutyl ketone as organic solvent can be applied also for other organic solvents. By way of example, here toluene is that organic solvent. New experimental results are reported for the influence of sodium chloride, sodium nitrate, sodium sulfate, sodium acetate and hydrochloric acid on the partitioning of acetic acid to coexisting aqueous/organic liquid phases of the system (water + toluene + tri-n-octylamine) at 25 °C. An extension/adaptation of the previously published thermodynamic framework is successfully applied to describe/predict the new experimental liquid–liquid phase equilibrium data.  相似文献
