We use the Gross-Pitaevskii equation to determine the spatial structure of the condensate density of interacting bosons whose energy dispersion ϵ k has two degenerate minima at finite wave-vectors ± q. We show that in general the Fourier transform of the condensate density has finite amplitudes for all integer multiples of q. If the interaction is such that many Fourier components contribute, the Bose condensate is localized at the sites of a one-dimensional lattice with spacing 2 π/|q|; in this case Bose-Einstein condensation resembles the transition from a liquid to a crystalline solid. We use our results to investigate the spatial structure of the Bose condensate formed by magnons in thin films of ferromagnets with dipole-dipole interactions.  相似文献

The effect of the physically correct boundary conditions and the nonvanishing ground state energy on Bose-Einstein condensation of quantum particles confined to a cubic volumeV=L 3 is evaluated. The transition point is shifted towards higher temperatures by the confinement, the specific heat below the onset of condensation is no longer proportional toT 3/2, and the pressure does depend on the volume. Precise expressions for the modification of the ground state population and for the shift of the condensation temperature are derived, together with an expansion of the internal energy and of the specific heat. Numerical computations confirm the accuracy of our analytical approximations.Dedicated to Herbert Wagner, whose work on quantum Fermi liquids proved to be also very stimulating for quantum Bose liquids.  相似文献

Condensation of the ideal Bose gas in a closed volume having the shape of a rectangular parallel-epiped of length L with a square base of side length l (L ? l) is theoretically studied within the framework of the Bose-Einstein statistics (grand canonical ensemble) and within the statistics of a canonical ensemble of bosons. Under the condition N(l/L)4 ? l, where N is the total number of gas particles, dependence of the average number of particles in the condensate on the temperature T in both statistics is expressed as a function of the ratio t=T/T 1, where T 1 is a certain characteristic temperature depending only on the longitudinal size L. Therefore, the condensation process exhibits a one-dimensional (1D) character. In the 1D regime, the average numbers of particles in condensates of the grand canonical and canonical ensembles coincide only in the limiting cases of t → 0 and t → ∞. The distribution function of the number of particles in the condensate of a canonical ensemble of bosons at t ≤1 has a resonance shape and qualitatively differs from the Bose-Einstein distribution. The former distribution begins to change in the region of t ~ 1 and acquires the shape of the Bose-Einstein distribution for t ? 1. This transformation proceeds gradually that is, the 1D condensation process exhibits no features characteristic of the phase transition in a 3D system. For N(l/L)4 ? 1, the process acquires a 3D character with respect to the average number of particles in the condensate, but the 1D character of the distribution function of the number of particles in the condensate of a canonical ensemble of bosons is retained at all N values.  相似文献

Bose-Einstein condensation in a circular waveguide   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We have produced Bose-Einstein condensates in a ring-shaped magnetic waveguide. The few-millimeter diameter, nonzero-bias ring is formed from a time-averaged quadrupole ring. Condensates that propagate around the ring make several revolutions within the time it takes for them to expand to fill the ring. The ring shape is ideally suited for studies of vorticity in a multiply connected geometry and is promising as a rotation sensor.  相似文献

The phenomena of Bose-Einstein condensation is discussed for particles in a box with attractive walls. Variation of the elasticity has the following effects, a) the critical temperature, fugacity, etc. vary, b) separation of phases occurs, c) condensation in one and two dimensions is possible.  相似文献

A path integral Monte Carlo method was used to calculate the Bose-Einstein condensate fraction at the surface of a helium film at T = 0.77 K, as a function of density. Moving from the center of the slab to the surface, the condensate fraction was found to initially increase with decreasing density to a maximum value of 0.9 before decreasing. Long wavelength density correlations were observed in the static structure factor at the surface of the slab. Finally, a surface dispersion relation was calculated from imaginary-time density-density correlations.  相似文献

The properties of quantum statistically degenerate systems of Bosons which are created by an external pump field and decay within a finite lifetime are investigated by means of a Green's function treatment. These investigations help to understand the physical properties of such condensed Bose-systems as excitons, excitonic molecules and spin aligned hydrogen atoms. As an example, recent experiments by Hulin et al. on degenerate excitons in Cu2O are analyzed and a condensate fraction of about 5% is obtained.  相似文献

We study the occurrence of a Bose-Einstein transition in a dilute gas with repulsive interactions, starting from temperatures above the transition temperature. The formalism, based on the use of Ursell operators, allows us to evaluate the one-particle density operator with more flexibility than in mean-field theories, since it does not necessarily coincide with that of an ideal gas with adjustable parameters (chemical potential, etc.). In a first step, a simple approximation is used (Ursell-Dyson approximation), which allow us to recover results which are similar to those of the usual mean-field theories. In a second step, a more precise treatment of the correlations and velocity dependence of the populations in the system is elaborated. This introduces new physical effects, such as a change of the velocity profile just above the transition: the proportion of atoms with low velocities is higher than in an ideal gas. A consequence of this distortion is an increase of the critical temperature (at constant density) of the Bose gas, in agreement with those of recent path integral Monte-Carlo calculations for hard spheres. We propose a practically accessible non-mean-field ground state of Bose-Einstein condensation, which occurs in an interspecies two-particle entangled state, and is thus described by an entangled order parameter. A suitably defined entanglement entropy is used as the characterization of the non-mean-field nature, and is found to persist in a wide parameter regime. The interspecies entanglement leads to novel interference terms in the dynamical equations governing the single-particle orbital wave function. Experimental feasibility and several methods of probe are discussed. We urge the study of multichannel scattering between different species of atoms.  相似文献

We present neutron scattering measurements of the atomic momentum distribution n(k) in solid helium under a pressure p=41 bar (molar volume Vm=20.01+/-0.02 cm3/mol) and at temperatures between 80 and 500 mK. The aim is to determine whether there is Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) below the critical temperature, Tc=200 mK, where a superfluid density has been observed. Assuming BEC appears as a macroscopic occupation of the k=0 state below Tc, we find a condensate fraction of n0=(-0.10+/-1.20)% at T=80 mK and n0=(0.08+/-0.78)% at T=120 mK, consistent with zero. The shape of n(k) also does not change on crossing Tc within measurement precision.  相似文献

A theory of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of light in a dye microcavity is developed. The photon polarization degeneracy and the interaction between dye molecules and photons in all of the cavity modes are taken into account. The theory goes beyond the grand canonical approximation and allows one to determine the statistical properties of the photon gas for all numbers of dye molecules and photons at all temperatures, thus describing the microscopic, mesoscopic, and macroscopic light BEC from a general perspective. A universal relation between the degrees of second-order coherence for the photon condensate and the polarized photon condensate is obtained. The photon Bose-Einstein condensate can be used as a new source of nonclassical light.  相似文献

A general property of an ideal Bose gas as temperature tends to zero and when conditions of degeneracy are satisfied is to have an arbitrarily large population in the groud state (or in its neighborhood); thus, condensation occurs in any dimension D but for D ≤ 2 there is no critical temperature. Some astrophysical consequences, as well as the temperature-dependent mass case, are discussed.  相似文献

We consider the problem of Bose condensation of charged pions in QCD at finite isospin chemical potential μI using the O(4)-symmetric linear sigma model as an effective field theory for two-flavor QCD. Using the 2PI 1/N-expansion, we determine the quasiparticle masses as well as the pion and chiral condensates as a function of the temperature and isospin chemical potential in the chiral limit and at the physical point. The calculations show that there is a competition between the condensates. At T=0, Bose condensation takes place for chemical potentials larger than μπ. In the chiral limit, the chiral condensate vanishes for any finite value of μI.  相似文献

Bose-Einstein condensation in complex networks.   总被引:13,自引:0,他引:13
The evolution of many complex systems, including the World Wide Web, business, and citation networks, is encoded in the dynamic web describing the interactions between the system's constituents. Despite their irreversible and nonequilibrium nature these networks follow Bose statistics and can undergo Bose-Einstein condensation. Addressing the dynamical properties of these nonequilibrium systems within the framework of equilibrium quantum gases predicts that the "first-mover-advantage," "fit-get-rich," and "winner-takes-all" phenomena observed in competitive systems are thermodynamically distinct phases of the underlying evolving networks.  相似文献
