In this paper, we present a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of solutions in a Sobolev space Wpk(ℝs) (1≤p≤∞) to a vector refinement equation with a general dilation matrix. The criterion is constructive and can be implemented. Rate of convergence of vector cascade algorithms in a Sobolev space Wpk(ℝs) will be investigated. When the dilation matrix is isotropic, a characterization will be given for the Lp (1≤p≤∞) critical smoothness exponent of a refinable function vector without the assumption of stability on the refinable function vector. As a consequence, we show that if a compactly supported function vector φ∈Lp(ℝs) (φ∈C(ℝs) when p=∞) satisfies a refinement equation with a finitely supported matrix mask, then all the components of φ must belong to a Lipschitz space Lip(ν,Lp(ℝs)) for some ν>0. This paper generalizes the results in R.Q. Jia, K.S. Lau and D.X. Zhou (J. Fourier Anal. Appl. 7 (2001) 143–167) in the univariate setting to the multivariate setting. Recently, Bo’az Klartag showed that arbitrary convex bodies have Gaussian marginals in most directions. We show that Klartag’s quantitative estimates may be improved for many uniformly convex bodies. These include uniformly convex bodies with power type 2, and power type p>2 with some additional type condition. In particular, our results apply to all unit-balls of subspaces of quotients of L p for 1<p<∞. The same is true when L p is replaced by S p m , the l p -Schatten class space. We also extend our results to arbitrary uniformly convex bodies with power type p, for 2≤p<4. These results are obtained by putting the bodies in (surprisingly) non-isotropic positions and by a new concentration of volume observation for uniformly convex bodies. We prove upper bounds on the number ofL p-spheres passing throughD+1 points in general position in ℝ”, and on the sum of the Betti numbers of the intersection of bisectors in theL p-metric, wherep is an even positive integer. The bounds found do not depend onp. Our result implies that the complexity of Voronoi diagrams (for point sites in general position) in theL p-metric is bounded for increasingp. The proof for this upper bound involves the techniques of Milnor [12] and Thom [16] for finding a bound on the sum of the Betti numbers of algebraic varieties, but instead of the usual degree of polynomials we use their additive complexity, and apply results of Benedetti and Risler [2], [13]. Furthermore, we prove that inD dimensions and for evenp the number ofL p-spheres passing throughD+1 points in general position is odd. In particular, combined with results of [8], [9], our results clarify the structure of Voronoi diagrams based on theL p-metric (with evenp) in three dimensions. For the proof we use the theory of degree of continuous mappings in ℝD, which is a tool widely applied in nonlinear analysis [14]. In this paper we show a nonexistence result for harmonic maps with a rotational nondegeneracy condition from a Riemannian manifoldM with polep 0 to a negatively curved Hadamard manifold under the condition that the metric tensor ofM is bounded and that the sectional curvature ofM at a pointp is bounded from below by −c dist(p 0,p)−2 (c: a positive constant) as dist(p 0,p)→∞. We study homotopy equivalences of p-completions of classifying spaces of finite groups. To each finite group G and each prime p, we associate a finite category ℒ p c (G) with the following properties. Two p-completed classifying spaces BG p and BG p have the same homotopy type if and only if the associated categories ℒ p c (G) and ℒ p c (G’) are equivalent. Furthermore, the topological monoid Aut(BG p ) of self equivalences is determined by the self equivalences of the associated category ℒ p c (G). For p∈{3,4} and all p′>p, with p′ coprime to p, we obtain fermionic expressions for the combination χ 1,s p,p+q Δ χ p−1,s p,p of Virasoro (W 2) characters for various values of s, and particular choices of Δ. Equating these expressions with known product expressions, we obtain q-series identities which are akin to the Andrews–Gordon identities. For p=3, these identities were conjectured by Bytsko. For p=4, we obtain identities whose form is a variation on that of the p=3 cases. These identities appear to be new. The case (p,p′)=(3,14) is particularly interesting because it relates not only to W 2, but also to W 3 characters, and offers W 3 analogues of the original Andrews–Gordon identities. Our fermionic expressions for these characters differ from those of Andrews et al. which involve Gaussian polynomials. We express the volume of central hyperplane sections of star bodies inR n in terms of the Fourier transform of a power of the radial function, and apply this result to confirm the conjecture of Meyer and Pajor on the minimal volume of central sections of the unit balls of the spaces p n with 0<p<2. The two-dimensional classical Hardy space Hp(T×T) on the bidisc are introduced, and it is shown that the maximal operator of the (C,α,β) means of a distribution is bounded from the space Hp(T×T) to Lp(T2) (1/(α+1), 1/(β+1)<p≤∞), and is of weak type (H 1 # (T×T), L1(T2)), where the Hardy space H 1 # (T×T) is defined by the hybrid maximal function. As a consequence we obtain that the (C, α, β) means of a function f∈H 1 # (T×T)⊃LlogL(T 2) convergs a. e. to the function in question. Moreover, we prove that the (C, α, β) means are uniformly bounded on the spaces Hp(T×T) whenever 1/(α+1), 1(β+1)<p<∞. Thus, in case f∈Hp(T×T), the (C, α, β) means convergs to f in Hp(T×T) norm whenever (1/(α+1), 1/(β+1)<p<∞). The same results are proved for the conjugate (C, α, β) means, too. We consider the boundary value problem Δu+⋎x u p =0, α>0, in the unit ballB with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition andp a large exponent. We find a condition which ensures the existence of a positive solutionu p concentrating outside the origin atk symmetric points asp goes to +∞. The same techniques lead also to a more general result on general domains. In particular, we find that concentration at the origin is always possible, provided α⊄IN. In the bootstrap percolation on the n-dimensional hypercube, in the initial position each of the 2n sites is occupied with probability p and empty with probability 1−p, independently of the state of the other sites. Every occupied site remains occupied for ever, while an empty site becomes occupied if at least two of its neighbours are occupied. If at the end of the process every site is occupied, we say that the (initial) position spans the hypercube. We shall show that there are constants c1,c2>0 such that for the probability of spanning tends to 1 as n→∞, while for the probability tends to 0. Furthermore, we shall show that for each n the transition has a sharp threshold function. J. We study property (T) and the fixed-point property for actions on L p and other Banach spaces. We show that property (T) holds when L 2 is replaced by L p (and even a subspace/quotient of L p ), and that in fact it is independent of 1≤p<∞. We show that the fixed-point property for L p follows from property (T) when 1<p< 2+ε. For simple Lie groups and their lattices, we prove that the fixed-point property for L p holds for any 1< p<∞ if and only if the rank is at least two. Finally, we obtain a superrigidity result for actions of irreducible lattices in products of general groups on superreflexive spaces. For a fixed integer s≥1, we estimate exponential sums with harmonic sums individually and on average, where Hs(n) is computed modulo a prime p. These bounds are used to derive new results about various congruences modulo p involving Hs(n). For example, our estimates imply that for any ɛ>0, the set {Hs(n):n<p1/2+ɛ} is uniformly distributed modulo a sufficiently large p. We also show that every residue class λ can be represented as with max{nν|ν=1,. . . , 7}≤p11/12+ɛ, and we obtain an asymptotic formula for the number of such representations. The same results hold also for the values Bpr(n) of Bernoulli polynomials where r is fixed, complementing some results of W. L. Fouche. During the preparation of this paper, F. Denote by B 2σ,p (1 < p < ∞) the bandlimited class p-integrable functions whose Fourier transform is supported in the interval [−σ, σ]. It is shown that a function in B 2σ,p can be reconstructed in L p(ℝ) by its sampling sequences {f (κπ / σ)} κ∈ℤ and {f’ (κπ / σ)} κ∈ℤ using the Hermite cardinal interpolation. Moreover, it will be shown that if f belongs to L p r (ℝ), 1 < p < ∞, then the exact order of its aliasing error can be determined. In this paper we establish dimension freeL p (ℝ n ,|x|α) norm inequalities (1<p<∞) for the oscillation and variation of the Riesz transforms in ℝ n . The d-dimensional classical Hardy spaces Hp(T d) are introduced and it is shown that the maximal operator of the Riemann sums of a distribution is bounded from Hp(T d) to Lp(T 2) (d/(d+1)<p≤∞) and is of weak type (1,1) provided that the supremum in the maximal operator is taken over a positive cone. The same is proved for the conjugate Riemann sums. As a consequence we obtain that every function f∈L1(T d) is a. e.
