Modulus of elasticity of highly charged N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) based hydrogels (PNIPA) are measured at various swelling degrees in water. The sodium salt of 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) was used as the ionic comonomer of NIPA in the hydrogel preparation. The mole fraction of AMPS in the comonomer feed was varied between 0 and 1, while the crosslinker ratio was fixed at 1/85. The elasticity data show that the equilibrium swollen PNIPA hydrogels are in the non-Gaussian regime. Equations were derived based on the inverse Langevin function for the swelling ratio and the modulus of highly charged PNIPA hydrogels and checked by experiments. Results of calculations show good agreement to the swelling and elasticity data of highly swollen PNIPA gels.  相似文献

A series of hydrogels based on N-isopropylacrylamide, sodium acrylate, and N-tert-butylacrylamide were synthesized by free radical polymerization in a mixture of dioxane and water with tetra(ethylene glycol) diacrylate as the crosslinker and benzoyl peroxide as the initiator. The swelling behavior including the swelling rate of the crosslinked gels in water was studied with gravimetric method. The swelling ratio of the gel (0.1 mol% crosslinking) can reach 420 g/g at 20 °C and such a gel can release 96% of the water absorbed at 40 °C. The lower critical swelling temperature (LCST) of the copolymers can be adjusted by changing the chemical composition of the polymers. Such crosslinked gels can be potentially used as thermosensitive superabsorbent because of their high water uptake and thermal sensitivity.  相似文献

Thermosensitive N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) hydrogels were synthesized by a free radical copolymerization with N,N′-methylenebisacrylamide (MBAA) in four solvents: water, ethanol, acetone and N,N-dimethylformamide. The swelling and elastic properties of the hydrogels were affected by the synthesis-solvents; the hydrogels (e.g. NIPA/MBAA = 1000/50 mol/m3-pre-gel solution) synthesized in water have smaller swelling volume and larger shear modulus at 10 °C than those synthesized in amphiphilic solvents. The network structure of hydrogels was estimated in terms of the conversion and two sorts of effective crosslinking density based on the Flory theory and the concentration of crosslinker. The hydrogels synthesized in water can have the microscopic inhomogeneous network arising from the entanglement of polymer chains, while the hydrogels synthesized in amphiphilic solvents can have the homogeneous network arising from the polymer concentration lower than the pre-gel solution and can be similar in network structure to the lightly crosslinked hydrogel synthesized in water.  相似文献

A novel thermosensitive poly(N-vinylisobutyramide)(polyNVIBA) hydrogel was prepared by the copolymerization of N-vinylisobutyramide (NVIBA) with butylene-bis-NVA(B-BNVA) as a crosslinker in a high yield. The swelling transition behavior was examined in comparison with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)(polyNIPAAm) hydrogel. The resulting polyNVIBA hydrogel clearly showed a swelling transion in water at ca. 41°C. To control the transition temperature (Tt) of the gel, crosslinked copolymers of NVIBA and N-vinylacetamide (NVA) were prepared and compared with copolymers of N-isopropylacrylamide(NIPAAm) and NVA. The incorporation of NVA led to a higher swelling transition temperature. Tt of poly(NVIBA-co-NVA) gels was almost the same as those in water-soluble poly(NVIBA-co-NVA). The responses for a swelling transition of polyNVIBA and poly(NVIBA-co-NVA) gels were sharp in comparison to polyNIPAAm gels. PolyNVIBA and poly(NVIBA-co-NVA) gels desorbed 98% of water above Tt. The characteristic and the mechanism of the phase transition on the hydrogels were discussed. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci A: Polym Chem 35 : 3377–3384, 1997  相似文献

Temperature-sensitive ionic hydrogels based on N-t-butylacrylamide (TBA), acrylamide (AAm), 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid sodium salt (AMPS) and N,N-methylenebis(acrylamide) (BAAm) monomers were prepared. The molar ratio of TBA to the monomers AAm and AMPS was fixed at 60/40, while the AMPS content of the hydrogels was varied. The elastic modulus of the hydrogels was in the range of 347-447 Pa, much lower than the modulus of PAAm or poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) hydrogels due to the reduced crosslinking efficiency of BAAm in TBA/AAm copolymerization. The hydrogels exhibited swelling-deswelling transition in water depending on the temperature. Increasing ionic group (AMPS) content resulted in shifting of the transition temperature interval in which the deswelling takes place. The higher the ionic group content, the broader the temperature interval at the phase transition. Ionic hydrogels exhibited first-order reentrant conformational transitions in ethanol-water and in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO)-water mixtures. The higher the ionic group content of the hydrogels the narrower the ethanol (or DMSO) range in which the reentrant phenomena occur. By taking into account the difference of the solvent mixture composition inside and outside the gel, the equilibrium swelling theory provided a satisfactory agreement to the experimental swelling data of the hydrogels immersed in the solvent mixtures.  相似文献

Physically crosslinked complexes of polyvinyl pyrrolidinone-poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PVP-PNIPAAm) were prepared by photopolymerisation from a mixture of the monomers 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidinone and N-isopropylacrylamide. IR spectroscopy and calorimetry were used to characterise the resulting xerogels. By alternating the monomer feed ratio, copolymers were synthesised to have their own distinctive lower critical solution temperature (LCST). The transition temperature of the gels was established using cloud point measurement and modulated differential scanning calorimeter (MDSC). This ability to shift the phase transition temperature of the copolymers provides excellent flexibility in tailoring transitions for specific uses. Swelling experiments were performed on the copolymer disks in distilled water at varying temperatures to establish the behaviour of the gels above and below phase transition temperature. The results obtained show that below transition temperature, the gels are water soluble but above this temperature they are slightly less water soluble; significantly less water soluble; or water insoluble; depending on the composition and LCST of the gel.  相似文献

Firstly, nano-sized polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane with functional mercapto groups (POSS-SH) was prepared through hydrolytic condensation of 3-mercaptopropyl trimethoxysilane. Then N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAm) was allowed to polymerize at the presence of POSS-SH and N,N-methylene-bisacrylamide to yield hybridized hydrogels. The hybridized hydrogels demonstrated thermosensitive behavior across the volume phase transition temperatures. The swelling and deswelling rates were greatly accelerated through the incorporating of POSS-SH into the gels, and the thermal properties of the hybridized hydrogels were reinforced compared with the neat PNIPAm hydrogel. These results were ascribed to nano-effect created by the hydrophobic POSS-SH nanoparticles. The hybridized hydrogels have potential applications in drug controlled release.  相似文献

Macroporous hydrogels are characterized by large pore sizes, high pore volumes, and high specific surface area. Besides these characteristics, macroporous hydrogels based on thermally reversible polymers respond to temperature changes much faster than hydrogels prepared by a conventional method. Crosslinked poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (polyNIPAAm) forms a thermally reversible hydrogel which shows a lower critical solution temperature (LCST) ca. 33°C in aqueous solutions. We have synthesized thermally reversible polyNIPAAm hydrogels having macroporous structures by a new method. These macroporous hydrogels have large pore volumes, large average pore sizes, and faster macromolecule permeation rates in comparison to conventional polyNIPAAm hydrogels synthesized by a conventional method. Compared with conventional polyNIPAAm hydrogels, the macroporous polyNIPAAm hydrogels have higher swelling ratios at temperatures below the LCST and exhibit faster deswelling and reswelling rates. The deswelling rates are especially rapid. These thermally reversible macroporous hydrogels may be very useful in controlled active agent delivery and toxin removal, as well as dewatering of solutions. Peptides or proteins may behave as if they were in bulk solution within the large aqueous pores, and this may reduce their inactivation when such gels are used for their storage and later release. The gels may also be useful in microrobotic devices due to their fast response to temperature. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Thermo-sensitive poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPA) hydrogel with fast response rate was prepared by polymerizing N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) in an aqueous hydroxyl-propyl-methyl cellulose solution. The volume phase transition temperature of PNIPA hydrogels was characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and the surface morphology was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The swelling ratios of the hydrogels at different temperatures were measured. Furthermore, the deswelling kinetics of the hydrogels was also studied by measuring their water retention capacity. In comparison with a conventional PNIPA hydrogel prepared in water, the hydrogel synthesized in aqueous hydroxyl-propyl-methyl cellulose solution has higher swelling ratios at temperatures below the lower critical solution temperature and exhibits a much faster response rate to temperature changes. For example, the hydrogel made in aqueous hydroxyl-propyl-methyl cellulose solution lost 89% water within 1 min and about 93% water in 4 min, whereas the conventional hydrogel lost only about 66% water in 15 min from the deswelling measurement in similar conditions. The coil-to-globule transition of two poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) ionomers with different ionic contents (0.8 and 4.5 mol %), but similar weight average molar masses, in deionized water was investigated by a combination of static and dynamic light scattering. In spite of the large difference in their ionic contents, both the ionomers have a nearly same lower critical solution temperature (LCST, ∼ 32.5°C). At temperatures higher than the LCST, the ionomer chains undergo a simultaneous intrachain coil-to-globule transition and interchain aggregation to form nanoparticles thermodynamically stable in water. The average size of the nanoparticles decreases respectively as the ionic content increases and the ionomer concentration decreases. The interchain aggregation can be completely suppressed in an extremely dilute ionomer solution (< ∼ 5 × 10−6 g/mL), so that the intrachain coil-to-globule transition leads to the collapse of the ionomer chains into individual single-chain nanoparticles. Our results clearly indicate that there is a hysteresis in the colling process (the globule-to-coil transition). © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. J Polym Sci B: Polym Phys 36: 1501–1506, 1998  相似文献

Thermo- and pH-sensitive hydrogels were synthesized via the copolymerization of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) and methacrylic acid (MAA) crosslinked with a biodegradable PEG-co-PCL macromolecular crosslinker under UV irradiation. Swelling measurements showed that temperature and pH sensitivity of the resultant hydrogels were highly dependent on the composition of the hydrogels as well as temperature and pH of the local medium. The pH and temperature dependence of the hydrogels displayed good reversibility. The hydrolytic degradation studies showed that the degradation rate of the hydrogels increased with the increasing content of MAA introduced in the hydrogels in pH 7.4 PBS solutions at 37 °C. The study on the release of BSA indicated that the release rate of BSA was higher at pH 7.4 than at pH 2.0, and increased with the increase of the MAA content in the hydrogels in pH 7.4 PBS solutions at 37 °C. These hydrogel materials are desirable for potential applications as smart drug delivery systems.  相似文献

Thermally sensitive hydrogels of poly[N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPA)-co-acrylic(AA)] hydrogels with N,N-methylene bisacrylamide (BIS) as crosslinker have been synthesised via a two-step procedure in which, the initial polymerisation is conducted for various times at 18 °C, this step being followed by polymerisation for one fixed time at −22 °C. The gravimetrically determined rates of swelling/deswelling for these materials termed “cryogels” prepared by this two-step polymerisation are much higher than those for the same type of hydrogel prepared via conventional methods (30 °C for 24 h). For example the time for the former xerogel to take up 70% of its final water content at 25 °C is just 18 min, compared with a time 300 min for the latter to attain the same uptake of water. During deswelling (shrinking) at 50 °C, which is above the lower critical temperature, the hydrogel loses 60 and 90 wt.% water in 1 and 10 min respectively, compared to a timescale for the corresponding crosslinked copolymers prepared by conventional methods of about 100 min for 50 wt.% water loss. A third type of hydrogel was made by a cold treatment (CT), for which the hydrogel prepared by conventional polymerisation was stored in the frozen state. The swelling rate of these CT xerogels was the same as that for xerogels prepared by conventional polymerisation, but the deswelling rate of the former was higher than that of the latter; for example, during deswelling, a loss of 90% water is attained within a few minutes.Scanning electron microscopy, digital photographs and flotation experiments together with swelling ratio studies reveal that the polymeric network of cryogel produced by the two-step polymerisation method is characterised by an open structure with more pores and higher swelling ratio but lower mechanical strength compared to the conventional hydrogels. The polymerisation was taking place on moderate freezing condition and the hydrogel was stored in a frozen state and subsequent thawing of polymer to be very useful the acceleration the response rate of this kind hydrogels. Such rapid response hydrogels have potential applications in separation and drug release technologies for example.  相似文献

Simultaneous and sequential poly(N-isopropyl acrylamide) (PNIPAAm)/poly(dimethyl siloxane) (PDMS) semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (IPNs) with different linear PDMS contents were prepared by free radical polymerization method. Their phase morphologies have been characterized by FTIR, DSC and SEM. The simultaneous semi-IPNs exhibited phase transition temperatures (Tpt) shifted higher temperature from glass transition temperatures (Tg) of their respective homopolymers, suggesting a heterophase morphology and only physical entanglement between the PNIPAAm network and linear PDMS with high molecular weight (Mn≈9000 g/mol). For sequential semi-IPNs, the shift of Tpts towards lower temperature suggested that the chemical interaction between the constituents of the IPNs increased with increasing PDMS content in the network. In addition, these semi-IPNs were characterized for their thermo-sensitive behaviour by equilibrium swelling studies. The results showed that incorporation of hydrophobic PDMS polymer into the thermo- and pH-sensitive PNIPAAm and P(NIPAAm-co-IA) (itaconic acid) hydrogels by semi-IPN formation decreased swelling degrees of IPNs without affecting their LCSTs whereas addition of acrylated PDMS (Tegomer V-Si 2250) as crosslinker instead of N,N-methylenebisacrylamide (BIS) into the structures of these hydrogels changed their LCSTs along with their swelling degrees.  相似文献

Thermosensitive hydrogels were prepared by free-radical polymerization in aqueous solution from N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) and acrylamide (AAm) monomers. N,N-Methylenebis(acrylamide) (MBAAm) was used as a crosslinker. A kinetic study of the absorption determined the transport mechanism. The diffusion coefficients of these hydrogels were calculated for the Fickian mechanism. It was shown that the swelling behavior of the P(NIPA-co-AAm) hydrogels can be controlled by changing the amount of MBAAm. The swelling equilibrium of the P(NIPA-co-AAm) hydrogels was also investigated as a function of temperature in aqueous solutions of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and the cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB). In SDS and DTAB solutions, the equilibrium swelling ratio of the hydrogels increased, this is ascribed to the conversion of non-ionic P(NIPA-co-AAm) hydrogel into polyelectrolyte hydrogels due to binding of surfactant molecules through the hydrophobic interaction. Additionally, the amount of free SDS and DTAB ions was measured at different temperatures by a conductometric method, it was found that the electric conductivity of the P(NIPA-co-AAm)—surfactant systems depended strongly on both the type and concentration of surfactant solutions.  相似文献

The phase transition and critical phenomenon of equilibrium swollen poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (NIPA) hydrogels were studied by 1H NMR spectroscopy in liquid solution mode. The quantitative NMR observation shows that the peak height and line width of polymer proton and of the HOD proton, and relaxation times of HOD proton all transitionally change as the temperature approaches the transition temperature. The relaxation times of water protons are also measured quantitatively, which shows that the temperature dependence of relaxation times of HOD on temperature before the transition is not consistent with relaxation theory based on the assumption of dominated dipolar interaction between like-spin nuclei and isotropic rotational motion. To explain the surprising relaxation behavior of HOD, we suggest that the amount of bound water in gels increases gradually with temperature at the approach of the phase transition. The pulsed-gradient spin-echo NMR experiments of NIPA gel confirm this suggestion. We believe that these results have important implications concerning the mechanism of the phase transition of NIPA hydrogels.  相似文献

Polymeric hydrogels based on biocompatible materials, methacrylic acid (MAA), were designed and synthesized. Synthesis was carried out by free-radical copolymerization using potassium persulfate as initiator and N,N-methylenebisacrylamide as crosslinker. Hydrogels were also characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). DSC was used for the quantitive determination of the amounts of freezing and non-freezing water of the hydrogels with 0.5% of N,N-methylenebisacrylamide. Equilibrium swelling of hydrogels was studied in phosphate buffer of physiological pH (1.0, 4.0, 7.4 and 8.5) at 37 °C. The swelling kinetic of the hydrogels were studied and the kinetic characteristic constant of copolymeric systems, k, and the exponent which characterizes the mechanism of water transport at short times, n, were obtained. Metoclopramide hydrochloride was entrapped into the hydrogels by sorption and the “in vitro” release profile of this drug was established in simulated gastric fluid (SGF) and simulated intestinal fluid (SIF). It was observed that the drug release mechanism was non-Fickian.  相似文献

A novel type of interpenetrating polymer networks (IPN) hydrogel membrane of poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)/carboxymethyl chitosan (PNIPAAm)/(CMCS) was prepared, and the effects of the feed ratio of components, swelling medium and irradiation dose on the swelling and deswelling properties of the hydrogel was systematically studied. The results showed that the introduction of CMCS did not shift the LCST (at 32 °C), which is similar to the pure PNIPAAm. The lowest swelling ratio was at pH 2. There was little influence of irradiation dose on the thermo- and pH-sensitivity of the IPN hydrogel, increasing dose only decreased the swelling ratio. The PNIPAAm:CMCS=1:4 w/w hydrogel was not thermo-sensitive in distilled water, whereas it showed a discontinuous volume phase transition in pH 2 and a continuous one in pH 8 buffer. Consequently, a combination of pH and temperature can be coupled to control the responsive behavior of these hydrogels.  相似文献

The thermoresponsive behavior and mechanical properties of nanostructured hydrogels, which consist of poly(acrylamide) nanoparticles embedded in a cross-linked poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) hydrogel matrix, are reported here. Nanostructured hydrogels exhibit a tuned volume phase transition temperature (T VPT), which varies with nanoparticle content in the range from 32 up to 39–40 °C. Moreover, larger equilibrium water uptake, faster swelling and de-swelling rates, and larger equilibrium swelling at 25 °C were obtained with nanostructured hydrogels compared with those of conventional ones. Elastic and Young’s moduli were larger than those of conventional hydrogels at similar swelling ratios. The tuned T VPT and the de-swelling rate were predicted with a modified Flory–Rehner equation coupled with a mixing rule that considers the contribution of both polymers. These behaviors are explained by a combination of hydrophilic/hydrophobic interactions and by the controlled inhomogeneities (nanoparticles) introduced by the method of synthesis.  相似文献

N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAM)/maleic acid (MA) copolymeric hydrogels were prepared by irradiating the ternary mixtures of NIPAAM/MA/Water by γ-rays at ambient temperature. The influence of external stimuli such as pH and temperature of the swelling media on the equilibrium swelling properties was investigated. The hydrogels showed both temperature and pH responses. The effect of comonomer concentration and irradiation dose on the swelling equilibria and phase transition was studied. For the characterization of these hydrogels, the diffusion behaviour and molecular weight between crosslinks were investigated.  相似文献
