This paper concerns a study of the detectability of dry contact kissing bonds in adhesive joints using three ultrasonic inspection techniques. Conventional normal incidence longitudinal and shear wave inspection were conducted on dry contact kissing bonds using a standard damped ultrasonic transducer and an electro-magnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) respectively. The detectability of the dry contact kissing bonds was assessed by calculating the reflection coefficient of the imperfect interface at varying loads for a number of surface roughnesses. A high power ultrasonic method was also employed to determine the non-linear behavior of the adhesive interface. The non-linearity of the interface was determined by the ratio of the amplitudes of the first harmonic and fundamental frequencies of the transmitted waveform. It was found that the high power technique showed the greatest sensitivity to these kissing bonds at low contact pressures, however at high loads conventional longitudinal wave testing was more sensitive. It was also noted that a combination of two or more techniques could provide enhanced information about the kissing bond compared to a single technique alone.  相似文献

A dispersive and saturable medium is shown, under very general conditions, to possess ultrafast dynamic behaviour due to non-adiabatic polarisation dynamics. Simple analytical expressions relating the effect to the refractive index dispersion of a semiconductor are derived and the magnitude of the equivalent Kerr coefficient is shown to be in qualitative agreement with measurements on active semiconductor waveguides.  相似文献

Our hearing organ, the cochlea, evidently poises itself at a Hopf bifurcation to maximize tuning and amplification. We show that in this condition several effects are expected to be generic: compression of the dynamic range, infinitely sharp tuning at zero input, and generation of combination tones. These effects are "essentially" nonlinear in that they become more marked the smaller the forcing: there is no audible sound soft enough not to evoke them. All the well-documented nonlinear aspects of hearing therefore appear to be consequences of the same underlying mechanism.  相似文献

借助于兰姆波频散曲线及导波激发的模式展开分析方法,对基频兰姆波时域信号及二次谐波时域信号的发生过程进行了直观的论述。结合Ritec-SNAP系统的测量功能,详细分析了二次谐波时域脉冲包络积分表达式的物理意义;该积分表达式可表征基频兰姆波时域脉冲传播过程中的二次谐波发生效率,以及基频与二倍频兰姆波模式之间的频散程度。在基频与二倍频兰姆波相速度相等(或近似相等)的频率附近,实验观察到显著的且无模式混叠的二次谐波信号,显示出在兰姆波的传播过程中的确可存在强烈的非线性效应。对于三种不同粘接情形的复合板材,实验结果表明,采用本文引入的非线性兰姆波应力波因子,结合二次谐波幅频曲线峰值所对应的频率值,可有效地对板材粘接层性质进行表征。  相似文献

Weak modulation of a quasi-phase-matching (QPM) grating opens possibilities for engineering both the average quadratic nonlinearity and the incoherent average cubic nonlinearity induced by QPM. The relative strength of the average quadratic and effective (intrinsic plus induced) cubic nonlinearity is studied for LiNbO(3) . We show how the induced average cubic nonlinearity can be engineered to dominate the intrinsic material cubic nonlinearity and how doing so will allow the intensity at which the quadratic and cubic nonlinearities balance and thus compete to be decreased to a few gigawatts per square centimeter.  相似文献

This paper deals with the propagation of ultrasonic guided waves in adhesively bonded lap-shear joints. The topic is relevant to bond inspection by ultrasonic testing. Specifically, the propagation of the lowest-order, antisymmetric a0 mode through the joint is examined. An important aspect is the mode conversion at the boundaries between the single-plate adherents and the multilayer overlap. The a0 strength of transmission is studied for three different bond states in aluminum joints, namely a fully cured adhesive bond, a poorly cured adhesive bond, and a slip bond. Theoretical predictions indicate that the dispersive behavior of the guided waves in the multilayer overlap is highly dependent on bond state. Experimental tests are conducted in lap-shear joints by a hybrid, broadband laser/air-coupled ultrasonic setup in a through-transmission configuration. The Gabor wavelet transform is employed to extract energy transmission coefficients in the 100 kHz 1.4 MHz range for the three different bond states examined. The cross-sectional mode shapes of the guided waves are shown to have a substantial role in the energy transfer through the joint.  相似文献

The third-order optical nonlinearities of dimethyl sulfoxide(DMSO) are investigated using the optical Kerr effect(OKE) and Z-scan techniques with femtosecond pulses.We are able to fit the OKE signal theoretically by convolving the autocorrelation of the incident pulse intensity profile with the impulse responses of the samples,illustrating the instantaneous nonlinear response of DMSO.We verify that the purely electronic cloud distortion causes the observed signal for DMSO.The Z-scan technique is used to estimate the third-order susceptibility of DMSO,which is about a quarter of that for CS2 and mainly comes from the nonlinear refraction with an intensity of less than 140 GW/cm2.  相似文献

Conjugated polymers with sidegroups such as methyl, trimethylsilyl, p-methoxy phenyl, o-methoxy phenyl, and hexyl groups on a polyphenylacetylene chain are studied in an attempt to understand the contribution of factors such as the backbone, conformation of the chain, sidegroups and polymerization catalyst on the optical nonlinearities. The results of degenerate four-wave mixing experiments at 532 nm with nanosecond pulses indicate that the substitution of an electron-donating group away from the backbone can enhance the third-order susceptibility. Some of the polymers show optical limiting action at this wavelength. The thermal contribution to the measured susceptibility is also determined.  相似文献

Summary The existence of an optical nonlinearity of the Kerr-like type in a lyotropic liquid crystal is described in c.w. operation. The nonlinearity is found using the liquid crystal as a cladding material in a waveguide, or studying the interface properties between the liquid crystal and an ordinary glass. The used material is potassium caprillate and the nonlinearity is ascribed to thermal effects. Third order nonlinear optical susceptibilities χ(3) of GaAs/Ga1?xAlAs superlattices have been predicted which are two orders of magnitude larger than those of bulk GaAs. This enhancement is due to the band nonparabolicity arising from the additional periodicity of the superlattice. These predictions, based on a tight-binding model of the superlattice dispersion, are here extended to the more realistic Kronig-Penney (KP) model. Corrections to tight-binding are non-negligible; however, enhancements of χ(3) are still large but reduced approximately 30%–50% over previous estimates. The KP model is also here applied to superlattices employing InSb as the quantum well material. Because of the smaller effective mass of InSb, and taking account of its bulk nonparabolicity, the minibands move to higher energy, enhancing the interwell overlap and increasing χ(3) by about one order of magnitude over that of bulk InSb. The role of the barrier material in this case is important and is discussed. The interplay between the bulk nonparabolicity and that arising from the superlattice is also addressed.  相似文献

We numerically investigate the femtosecond filamentation dynamics in argon by considering the higher-order nonlinearities measured by a recent experiment. Our result indicates that, instead of plasma, these higher-order nonlinearities can provide main defocusing effect as shown by a recent theoretical work. However, when the higher-order nonlinearity is so strong to provide a main defocusing effect, some phenomena inconsistent with previous experiments such as pulse splitting and pulse self-compression can appear. Therefore, we infer that the values of higher-order nonlinear coefficients are overestimated, and the plasma should be the defocusing mechanism at least in the argon filament.  相似文献

We present what we believe to be the first direct measurements of enhanced nonlinearities in large-mode-area fibers due to bend induced reductions in effective area. Both Raman scattering and self-phase modulation are observed to increase in tightly coiled fibers. The measured increase in nonlinearity compares well with predictions from simulations of the modal effective area.  相似文献

Usually nonlinear response of metals is neglected in the study of plasmonic waveguiding structures. Recent prediction of strong third-order optical response of metals due to ponderomotive forces opens up novel possibilities for utilizing this effect in the design of active plasmonic devices. We discuss the possibility of implementation of nonlinear response of metals in the design of plasmonic coupler. We analyze the structure and dispersions of linear and nonlinear guided plasmonic modes of two coupled thin metallic films and predict bifurcations of symmetry breaking.  相似文献

A one-dimensional diatomic chain whose energy contains cubic and quartic terms in the atomic displacements is considered. A modified asymptotic method is proposed for finding soliton solutions to equations describing systems with nonlinearities of various symmetry. It is shown that the dynamics of the model in question can be described in terms of equations that are similar to the dynamic equations for a diatomic chain with an even potential function. Soliton solutions of a new, unusual type are found in the specific case of a free diatomic chain with a purely cubic anharmonic potential.  相似文献
