On the Measure of a Nonreciprocal Algebraic Number

Let M() be the Mahler measure of an algebraic number and let G() be the modulus of the product of logarithms of absolute values of its conjugates. We prove that if is a nonreciprocal algebraic number of degree d 2 then M()² G()^1/d 1/2d. This estimate is sharp up to a constant. As a main tool for the proof we develop an idea of Cassels on an estimate for the resultant of and 1/. We give a number of immediate corollaries, e.g., some versions of Smyth's inequality for the Mahler measure of a nonreciprocal algebraic integer from below.

In this work, we show how suitable generalizations of the integer transfinite diameter of some compact sets in give very good bounds for coefficients of polynomials with small Mahler measure. By this way, we give the list of all monic irreducible primitive polynomials of of degree at most with Mahler measure less than and of degree and with Mahler measure less than .

Polynomials with small Mahler measure

We describe several searches for polynomials with integer coefficients and small Mahler measure. We describe the algorithm used to test Mahler measures. We determine all polynomials with degree at most 24 and Mahler measure less than , test all reciprocal and antireciprocal polynomials with height 1 and degree at most 40, and check certain sparse polynomials with height 1 and degree as large as 181. We find a new limit point of Mahler measures near , four new Salem numbers less than , and many new polynomials with small Mahler measure. None has measure smaller than that of Lehmer's degree 10 polynomial.

Algebraic Independence of Certain Generalized Mahler Type Numbers

In this paper the generalized Mahler type number Mh（g;A,T） is defined, and in the case of multiplicatively dependent parameters gi, hi（1 ≤ i ≤ s） the algebraic independence of the numbers Mhi （gi; A, T）（1 ≤ i ≤ s） is proved, where A and T are certain infinite sequences of non-negative integers and of positive integers, respectively. Furthermore, the algebraic independence result on values of a certain function connected with the generalized Mahler type number and its derivatives at algebraic numbers is also given.

Mahler measures in a cubic field

We prove that every cyclic cubic extension E of the field of rational numbers contains algebraic numbers which are Mahler measures but not the Mahler measures of algebraic numbers lying in E. This extends the result of Schinzel who proved the same statement for every real quadratic field E. A corresponding conjecture is made for an arbitrary non-totally complex field E and some numerical examples are given. We also show that every natural power of a Mahler measure is a Mahler measure.     

Weak log-majorization, Mahler measure and polynomial inequalities

We explore the use of the weak log-majorization order in the analytic theory of polynomials. We examine the relationship between weak log-majorization and Mahler measure. We also improve the weak log-majorization form of the de Bruijn-Springer-Mahler inequality.     

Estimating Mahler measures using periodic points for the doubling map

The Mahler measure m(P)$m\left(P\right)$ of a polynomial P$P$ is a numerical value which is useful in number theory, dynamical systems and geometry. In this article we show how this can be written in terms of periodic points for the doubling map on the unit interval. This leads to an interesting algorithm for approximating m(P)$m\left(P\right)$ which we illustrate with several examples.     

The Remak height for units

We investigate the values of the Remak height, which is a weighted product of the conjugates of an algebraic number. We prove that the ratio of logarithms of the Remak height and of the Mahler measure for units αof degree d is everywhere dense in the maximal interval [d/2(d-1),1] allowed for this ratio. To do this, a “large” set of totally positive Pisot units is constructed. We also give a lower bound on the Remak height for non-cyclotomic algebraic numbers in terms of their degrees. In passing, we prove some results about some algebraic numbers which are a product of two conjugates of a reciprocal algebraic number. Length of the Sum and Product of Algebraic Numbers

In the present paper, we consider products of lengths of algebraic numbers whose sum or product is a chosen algebraic number. These products are used to construct a new height function for algebraic numbers. The Mahler measure of parametrizable polynomials

Our aim is to explain instances in which the value of the logarithmic Mahler measure m(P) of a polynomial P∈Z[x,y] can be written in an unexpectedly neat manner. To this end we examine polynomials defining rational curves, which allows their zero-locus to be parametrized via x=f(t), y=g(t) for f,g∈C(t). As an illustration of this phenomenon, we prove the equality

     

Some examples of Mahler measures as multiple polylogarithms

The Mahler measures of certain polynomials of up to five variables are given in terms of multiple polylogarithms. Each formula is homogeneous and its weight coincides with the number of variables of the corresponding polynomial.     

A study of inverse trigonometric integrals associated with three-variable Mahler measures, and some related identities

We prove several identities relating three-variable Mahler measures to integrals of inverse trigonometric functions. After deriving closed forms for most of these integrals, we obtain ten explicit formulas for three-variable Mahler measures. Several of these results generalize formulas due to Condon and Lalín. As a corollary, we also obtain three q-series expansions for the dilogarithm.
