In this paper, a multiscale model that combines both macroscopic and microscopic analyses is presented for describing the ductile fracture process of crystalline materials. In the macroscopic fracture analysis, the recently developed strain gradient plasticity theory is used to describe the fracture toughness, the shielding effects of plastic deformation on the crack growth, and the crack tip field through the use of an elastic core model. The crack tip field resulting from the macroscopic analysis using the strain gradient plasticity theory displayes the 1/2 singularity of stress within the strain gradient dominated region. In the microscopic fracture analysis, the discrete dislocation theory is used to describe the shielding effects of discrete dislocations on the crack growth. The result of the macroscopic analysis near the crack tip, i.e. a new K-field, is taken as the boundary condition for the microscopic fracture analysis. The equilibrium locations of the discrete dislocations around the crack and the shielding effects of the discrete dislocations on the crack growth at the microscale are calculated. The macroscopic fracture analysis and the microscopic fracture analysis are connected based on the elastic core model. Through a comparison of the shielding effects from plastic deformation and the discrete dislocations, the elastic core size is determined.  相似文献

The quasicontinuum (QC) method is employed to simulate a nickel single crystal nano-plate with a mixed-mode crack. Atomic stresses near the crack tip are fitted according to the elastoplastic fracture mechanics equations. It is found that the atomic stress fields neighboring the crack tip are also singular and controlled by the atomic stress intensity factors. And then the critical energy release rates for brittle and ductile fracture are computed and compared in order to predict crack propagation or dislocation emission. Four possible slip directions at the crack tip are pointed out. Finally, the slip direction around the crack tip is determined by the shear stress and it is well consistent with the atomic pictures from the QC simulation.  相似文献

A traction-displacement relationship that may be embedded into a cohesive zone model for microscale problems of intergranular fracture is extracted from atomistic molecular-dynamics (MD) simulations. An MD model for crack propagation under steady-state conditions is developed to analyze intergranular fracture along a flat Σ99 [1 1 0] symmetric tilt grain boundary in aluminum. Under hydrostatic tensile load, the simulation reveals asymmetric crack propagation in the two opposite directions along the grain boundary. In one direction, the crack propagates in a brittle manner by cleavage with very little or no dislocation emission, and in the other direction, the propagation is ductile through the mechanism of deformation twinning. This behavior is consistent with the Rice criterion for cleavage vs. dislocation blunting transition at the crack tip. The preference for twinning to dislocation slip is in agreement with the predictions of the Tadmor and Hai criterion. A comparison with finite element calculations shows that while the stress field around the brittle crack tip follows the expected elastic solution for the given boundary conditions of the model, the stress field around the twinning crack tip has a strong plastic contribution. Through the definition of a Cohesive-Zone-Volume-Element—an atomistic analog to a continuum cohesive zone model element—the results from the MD simulation are recast to obtain an average continuum traction-displacement relationship to represent cohesive zone interaction along a characteristic length of the grain boundary interface for the cases of ductile and brittle decohesion.  相似文献

In this work, the effect of crack tip constraint on near-tip stress and deformation fields in a ductile FCC single crystal is studied under mode I, plane strain conditions. To this end, modified boundary layer simulations within crystal plasticity framework are performed, neglecting elastic anisotropy. The first and second terms of the isotropic elastic crack tip field, which are governed by the stress intensity factor K and T-stress, are prescribed as remote boundary conditions and solutions pertaining to different levels of T-stress are generated. It is found that the near-tip deformation field, especially, the development of kink or slip shear bands, is sensitive to the constraint level. The stress distribution and the size and shape of the plastic zone near the crack tip are also strongly influenced by the level of T-stress, with progressive loss of crack tip constraint occurring as T-stress becomes more negative. A family of near-tip fields is obtained which are characterized by two terms (such as K and T or J and a constraint parameter Q) as in isotropic plastic solids.  相似文献

Crack tip fields are calculated under plane strain small scale yielding conditions. The material is characterized by a finite strain elastic–viscoplastic constitutive relation with various hardening–softening–hardening hardness functions. Both plastically compressible and plastically incompressible solids are considered. Displacements corresponding to the isotropic linear elastic mode I crack field are prescribed on a remote boundary. The initial crack is taken to be a semi-circular notch and symmetry about the crack plane is imposed. Plastic compressibility is found to give an increased crack opening displacement for a given value of the applied loading. The plastic zone size and shape are found to depend on the plastic compressibility, but not much on whether material softening occurs near the crack tip.On the other hand, the near crack tip stress and deformation fields depend sensitively on whether or not material softening occurs. The combination of plastic compressibility and softening(or softening–hardening) has a particularly strong effect on the near crack tip stress and deformation fields.  相似文献

The influence of inertia on the stress and deformation fields near the tip of a crack growing in an elastic-plastic material is studied. The material is characterized by the von Mises yield criterion and J2 flow theory of plasticity. The crack grows steadily under plane strain conditions in the tensile opening mode. Features of the stress and deformation state at points near the moving crack tip are described for elastic-perfectly plastic response and for several crack propagation speeds. It is found that inertia has a significant effect on the elastic-plastic response of material particles near the crack tip, and that elastic unloading may occur behind the crack tip for higher speeds. The relationship between the applied crack driving force, represented by a remote stress intensity factor, and the crack tip speed is examined on the basis of a critical crack tip opening angle growth criterion. The calculated result is compared with dynamic fracture toughness versus crack speed data for a 4340 steel.  相似文献

The problem of a crack growing steadily and quasi-statically along a brittle\ductile interface under plane strain, mixed mode, and small scale yielding conditions is considered. The ductile material is assumed to be characterized by the J2-flow theory of plasticity with linear strain hardening, while the brittle material is assumed to be linear elastic. A displacement-based finite element method, exploiting the convective nature of the problem, is utilized to solve the relevant boundary value problem. In Part I of this work, the corresponding asymptotic problem was solved. This paper addresses the full-field problem in order to validate the asymptotic solutions, and to explore the physical implications of the results. The numerical full-field results are found to be in good agreement with the analytical asymptotic solutions. In particular, the full-field results strongly suggest that the stress fields in the vicinity of the crack tip are variable-separable of the power singular type; and also that the mode mix of the near-tip stress fields is, to a large extent, independent of the applied elastic mode mix. The amplitude (the plastic stress intensity factor) and the regions of validity of the asymptotic fields are estimated from the full-field results, and are observed to be strongly dependent on the applied mode mix. The remote elastic loading fields appear to influence the near-tip fields, primarily, through the plastic stress intensity factor. The present work also explores the suggestion made by Bose and Ponte Castaneda, 1992 that the solutions to the small scale yielding problem may be used in the context of a standard crack growth criterion, requiring that continued growth take place with a fixed near-tip crack opening profile, to obtain theoretical predictions for the dependence of interfacial toughness on the applied mode mix. Based on the numerical results, predictions for mixed mode toughness of the brittle\ductile interface are reported. The results, which are in qualitative agreement with available experimental data and also with some recent theoretical results, predict a strong dependence of interfacial toughness on mode mix. This suggests that ductility provides the main operating mechanism for explaining the dependence of interfacial toughness on the mode mix of the applied loading fields, during steady crack growth.  相似文献

The physical nature of a crack tip is not absolutely sharp but blunt with finite curvature. In this paper, the effects of crack-tip shape on the stress and deformation fields ahead of blunted cracks in glassy polymers are numerically investigated under Mode I loading and small scale yielding conditions. An elastic–viscoplastic constitutive model accounting for the strain softening upon yield and then the subsequently strain hardening is adopted and two typical glassy polymers, one with strain hardening and the other with strain softening–rehardening are considered in analysis. It is shown that the profile of crack tip has obvious effect on the near-tip plastic field. The size of near-tip plastic zone reduces with the increase of curvature radius of crack tip, while the plastic strain rate and the stresses near crack tip enhance obviously for two typical polymers. Also, the plastic energy dissipation behavior near cracks with different curvatures is discussed for both materials.

Quasi-static fracture in four-point-bend specimens of both brittle and ductile materials was examined using a method which required only photographic access to the specimen surface. Decorrelation of laser speckle patterns was used as a means to map out two-dimensional regions of high surface strain associated with crack propagation. ASTM A515 grade 70 steel was tested, at temperatures above and below its brittle-ductile transition temperature, by double-exposure speckle photography of the area ahead of the crack tip. The regions where the two speckle patterns were uncorrelated, determined by pointwise spatial filtering of the speckle interferograms, have been observed and are related to plastic deformation of the specimen surface near the crack tip. A subsequent comparison of the decorrelation zones resulting from brittle versus ductile states showed differences as expected in both zone size and shape.  相似文献

The present paper is concerned with the numerical modelling of the large elastic–plastic deformation behavior and localization prediction of ductile metals which are sensitive to hydrostatic stress and anisotropically damaged. The model is based on a generalized macroscopic theory within the framework of nonlinear continuum damage mechanics. The formulation relies on a multiplicative decomposition of the metric transformation tensor into elastic and damaged-plastic parts. Furthermore, undamaged configurations are introduced which are related to the damaged configurations via associated metric transformations which allow for the interpretation as damage tensors. Strain rates are shown to be additively decomposed into elastic, plastic and damage strain rate tensors. Moreover, based on the standard dissipative material approach the constitutive framework is completed by different stress tensors, a yield criterion and a separate damage condition as well as corresponding potential functions. The evolution laws for plastic and damage strain rates are discussed in some detail. Estimates of the stress and strain histories are obtained via an explicit integration procedure which employs an inelastic (damage-plastic) predictor followed by an elastic corrector step. Numerical simulations of the elastic–plastic deformation behavior of damaged solids demonstrate the efficiency of the formulation. A variety of large strain elastic–plastic-damage problems including severe localization is presented, and the influence of different model parameters on the deformation and localization prediction of ductile metals is discussed.  相似文献

A model for brittle fracture by transgranular cleavage cracking is presented based on the application of weakest link statistics to the critical microstructural fracture mechanisms. The model permits prediction of the macroscopic fracture toughness, KIc, in single phase microstructures containing a known distribution of particles, and defines the critical distance from the crack tip at which the initial cracking event is most probable. The model is developed for unstable fracture ahead of a sharp crack considering both linear elastic and nonlinear elastic (“elastic/plastic”) crack tip stress fields. Predictions are evaluated by comparison with experimental results on the low temperature flow and fracture behavior of a low carbon mild steel with a simple ferrite/grain boundary carbide microstructure.  相似文献

The quasicontinuum (QC) multiscale method is used to investigate anisotropic fracture behaviors of body-centered cubic (BCC) rare metal tantalum (Ta) loaded in Mode I and different fracture mechanisms are discussed from nanoscopic to continuum perspectives to have a deep understanding of brittle and ductile fracture. Initial crack deflection, brittle fracture by cleaving along low surface energy plane, ductile fracture as a result of dislocation emission and fracture accompanied by deformation twinning are all observed near crack tips of different crystal orientations. Particularly, some of these fracture mechanisms are found to be consistent with the latest experimental results. By examining different fracture behaviors, we find the surface energy and the available slip planes play a combined role in determining the fracture mechanisms near a crack tip. Both isotropic and anisotropic critical stress intensity factors are derived and compared for different crack orientations. A straightforward criterion that is proved to be applicable is used to distinguish brittle fracture from ductile fracture.  相似文献

Using Jaumann and Dienes rates of Euler stress in elastic-plastic constitutive equations of finite deformation, plane strain finite element analysis for a compact tension specimen with a blunted crack front is made. The Euler stress, Kirchhoff stress and volume strain energy density near a blunted crack tip are computed. Constitutive relations with different deformation rates affect the the near crack tip solution in a region within an order of magnitude of the crack opening displacement. The results differed from the corresponding solution of deformation plasticity (or nonlinear elasticity) with increasing deformation. They are smaller in a local region of about 2 to 10 times of the crack opening distance. The volume energy density near the crack tip is computed, the stationary values of which determine the locations of extensive yielding and possible sites of crack initiation. It remained nearly constant with increasing deformation. Such a character tends to support the volume energy density criterion as a means for quantifying the ductile fracture behavior of metals.  相似文献

The objective is to investigate energy dissipation mechanisms that operate at different length scales during fracture in ductile materials. A dimensional analysis is performed to identify the sets of dimensionless parameters which contribute to energy dissipation via dislocation-mediated plastic deformation at a crack tip. However, rather than using phenomenological variables such as yield stress and hardening modulus in the analysis, physical variables such as dislocation density, Burgers vector and Peierls stress are used. It is then shown via elementary arguments that the resulting dimensionless parameters can be interpreted in terms of competitions between various energy dissipation mechanisms at different length scales from the crack tip; the energy dissipations mechanisms are cleavage, crack tip dislocation nucleation and also dislocation nucleation from a Frank-Read source. Therefore, the material behavior is classified into three groups. The first two groups are the well-known intrinsic brittle and intrinsic ductile behavior. The third group is designated to be extrinsic ductile behavior for which Frank-Read dislocation nucleation is the initial energy dissipation mechanism. It is shown that a material is predicted to exhibit extrinsic ductility if the dimensionless parameter disl1/2 (b is Burgers vector, ρdisl is dislocation density) is within a certain range defined by other dimensionless parameters, irrespective of the competition between cleavage and crack tip dislocation nucleation. The predictions compare favorably to the documented behavior of a number of different classes of materials.  相似文献
