Multiple scattering, modified fragmentation functions, and radiative energy loss of a heavy-quark propagating in a nuclear medium are investigated in perturbative QCD. Because of the quark mass dependence of the gluon formation time, the medium size dependence of heavy-quark energy loss is found to change from a linear to a quadratic form when the initial energy and momentum scale are increased relative to the quark mass. The radiative energy loss is also significantly suppressed relative to a light quark due to the suppression of collinear gluon emission by a heavy quark.  相似文献

The energy loss effects of the incident quark, gluon, and the color octet ccˉ on J/ψ suppression in p-A collisions are studied by means of the experimental data at E866, RHIC, and LHC energy. We extracted the transport coefficient for gluon energy loss from the E866 experimental data in the middle x F region(0.20 x F 0.65) based on the Salgado-Wiedemann(SW) quenching weights and the recent EPPS16 nuclear parton distribution functions together with nCTEQ15. It was determined that the difference between the values of the transport coefficient for light quark, gluon, and heavy quark in cold nuclear matter is very small. The theoretical results modified by the parton energy loss effects are consistent with the experimental data for E866 and RHIC energy, and the gluon energy loss plays a remarkable role on J/ψ suppression in a broad variable range. Because the corrections of the nuclear parton distribution functions in the J/ψ channel are significant at LHC energy level, the nuclear modification due to the parton energy loss is minimal. It is worth noting that we use the color evaporation model(CEM) at leading order to compute the p-p baseline, and the conclusion in this paper is CEM model dependent.  相似文献

Heavy quark energy loss in a hot QCD plasma is computed taking into account the competing effects due to suppression of zeroth order gluon radiation below the plasma frequency and the enhancement of gluon radiation due to first order medium induced bremsstrahlung. The results suggest a surprising degree of cancellation between the two medium effects for charm quarks and provide a possible explanation for the null effect observed by PHENIX in the prompt electron spectrum in Au+Au at √s = 130 AGeV. In this paper only the main results for heavy quark energy loss will be presented. For more detailed version see [1] and references therein.  相似文献

We consider here chiral symmetry breaking in quantum chromodynamics arising from gluon condensates in vacuum. Through coherent states of gluons simulating a mean field type of approximation, we show that the off-shell gluon condensates of vacuum generate a mass-like contribution for the quarks, giving rise to chiral symmetry breaking. We next note that spontaneous breaking of global chiral symmetry links the four component quark field operator to the pion wave function. This in turn yields many hadronic properties in the light quark sector in agreement with experiments, leading to the conclusion that low energy hadron properties are primarily driven by the vacuum structure of quantum chromodynamics.  相似文献

We study the gluon radiation spectrum off a hard in-medium produced quark in the multiple soft-rescattering formalism of Baier–Dokshitzer–Mueller–Peigné–Schiff and of Zakharov (BDMPS-Z). Its dependence on the quark and gluon energy, on the gluon transverse momentum, on the in-medium pathlength and on the rescattering properties of the nuclear medium is analyzed quantitatively. The two components of gluon radiation, the hard vacuum radiation associated to the quark production vertex, and the medium-induced rescattering contribution interfere destructively. For small spatial extensions of the medium, this destructive interference overcompensates the hard vacuum radiation, and the total medium-induced radiative energy loss decreases as ΔE∝− L3. Medium-induced gluon production dominates only above a finite critical length L>Lcrit which varies between 3 and more than 6 fm depending on the rescattering properties of the medium. Deviations from the BDMPS-L2-behaviour persist above Lcrit. The medium-dependence of the angular gluon distribution is dominated by transverse brownian k-broadening. This results in a depletion of the low transverse momentum part of both the hard and the medium-induced contribution. As a consequence, the medium-induced energy loss outside a finite angular cone size Θ can be more than a factor two larger than the total medium-induced radiative energy loss. We discuss implications of these results for the jet quenching signal in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC.  相似文献

The collimation of average multiplicity inside quark and gluon jets is investigated in perturbative QCD in the modified leading logarithmic approximation (MLLA). The role of higher order corrections accounting for energy conservation and the running of the coupling constant leads to smaller multiplicity collimation as compared to leading logarithmic approximation (LLA) results. The collimation of jets produced in heavy-ion collisions has also been explored by using medium-modified splitting functions enhanced in the infrared sector. As compared to elementary collisions, the angular distribution of the jet multiplicity is found to broaden in QCD media at all energy scales.  相似文献

The rate of high energy photons produced from energetic jets during their propagation through the QGP at RHIC and LHC is studied by taking into account the contribution of jet quenching in the medium. It is shown that the jet quenching effect reduces the rate of jet-photon conversion at large transverse momemtum by about 40% at RHIC with √8= 200 AGeV, and by about 80% at LHC with √8 = 5500 AGeV.  相似文献

Within the framework of semiclassical approximation a general formalism for deriving an effective current generating bremsstrahlung of arbitrary number of soft gluons (longitudinal or transverse ones) in scattering of higher-energy parton off thermal parton in hot quark-gluon plasma with subsequent extension to two and more scatterers is obtained. For the case of static color centers, an expression for energy loss induced by usual bremsstrahlung of lowest-order with allowance for an effective temperature-induced gluon mass and finite mass of the projectile (heavy quark) is derived. The detailed analysis of contribution to radiation energy loss associated with existence of effective three-gluon vertex induced by hot QCD medium is performed. It is shown that in general, the bremsstrahlung associated with this vertex has no sharp direction (as in the case of usual bremsstrahlung) and therefore here, we can expect an absence of suppression effect due to multiple scattering. For the case of two-color static scattering centers it was shown that the problem of calculation of bremsstrahlung induced by four-gluon hard thermal loop (HTL) vertex correction can be reduced to the problem of the calculation of bremsstrahlung induced by three-gluon HTL correction. It was shown that for limiting value of soft gluon occupation number Nk 1/αs all higher processes of bremsstrahlung of arbitrary number of soft gluons become of the same order in coupling, and the problem of resummation of all relevant contributions to radiation energy loss of fast parton, arises. An explicit expression for matrix element of two soft gluon bremsstrahlung in small angles approximation is obtained.  相似文献

In a non-perturbative bag model framework, gluon exchange which mediates quark exchange scattering in conjunction with quark interchange is shown to be the basis of the OBE interactions of hyperons at low energy.  相似文献

We propose a solution for the long standing puzzle of a too steeply falling fragmentation function for a quark fragmenting into a pion, calculated by Berger [E.L. Berger, Phys. Lett. B 89 (1980) 241] in the Born approximation. Contrary to the simple anticipation that gluon resummation worsens the problem, we find good agreement with data. Higher quark Fock states slow down the quark, an effect which we call jet lag. It can be also expressed in terms of vacuum energy loss. As a result, the space–time development of the jet shrinks and the z-dependence becomes flatter than in the Born approximation. The space–time pattern is also of great importance for in-medium hadronization.  相似文献

The effective vertex for quark production in the interaction of a Reggeized quark and a Reggeized gluon is calculated in the next-to-leading order (NLO). The resulting vertex is the missing component of the NLO multi-Regge amplitude featuring quark and gluon exchanges in the t channels. This calculation will make it possible to develop in future the bootstrap approach to proving quark Reggeization in the next-to-leading logarithmic approximation.  相似文献

We construct the effective Hamiltonian which governs the renormalization group flow of the gluon distribution with increasing energy and in the leading logarithmic approximation. This Hamiltonian defines a two-dimensional field theory which involves two types of Wilson lines: longitudinal Wilson lines which describe gluon recombination (or merging) and temporal Wilson lines which account for gluon bremsstrahlung (or splitting). The Hamiltonian is self-dual, i.e., it is invariant under the exchange of the two types of Wilson lines. In the high density regime where one can neglect gluon number fluctuations, the general Hamiltonian reduces to that for the JIMWLK evolution. In the dilute regime where gluon recombination becomes unimportant, it reduces to the dual partner of the JIMWLK Hamiltonian, which describes bremsstrahlung.  相似文献

The averaged jet charge characterizes the electric charge of the initiating parton and provides a powerful tool to distinguish quark jets from gluon jets.We predict, for the first time, the medium modification of the averaged jet charge in the heavy-ion collisions at the LHC,where jet productions in p+p collisions are simulated by PYTHIA6,and the parton energy loss in QGP is calculated with two Monte Carlo models of jet quenching:PYQUEN and JEWEL.We found that the distribution of averaged jet charge is significantly suppressed by initial state isospin effects due to the participation of neutrons with zero electric charge during nuclear collisions. The considerable enhancement of the averaged jet charge in central Pb+Pb collisions is observed relative to peripheral collisions, since the jet quenching effect is more pronounced in central collisions. The distinct feature of the averaged jet charge between quark and gluon jets, along with the sensitivity of medium modifications on the jet charge to flavor dependence of the parton energy loss, could be very useful to discriminate the energy loss pattern between quark and gluon jets in heavy-ion collisions.  相似文献

It is argued that, in the leading logarithm approximation (LLA) of asymptotically free quantum chromodynamics (QCD), a simple algorithm (jet calculus) can be justified for computing a large number of quantities related to the longitudinal and transverse structure of quark and gluon jets.We formulate the rules of jet calculus in two variables, x and y which are related to longitudinal (energy) and transverse momentum respectively. Throughout the paper, quark and gluon jets are contrasted. After reviewing what has been done on longitudinal spectra, we turn to the transverse structure of jets down to relative transverse momenta of the order of a few GeV (independently of the total energy). The relation of our work to that of Dokshitzer, D'Yakonov and Troyan is elucidated. We also study jets generated by (almost) real photons and compare both with standard “final” parton jets.We also discuss calorimeter measured quantities, compare our results with those of other authors and propose a new and easy way for measuring QCD-predictable anomalous dimensions. We finally give a Lagrangian formulation of jet calculus, as a non-local theory in 1 + 1 dimensions to be solved in the tree approximation.  相似文献

It is shown that to leading order the collisional energy loss of an energetic parton in the hot quark gluon plasma reads dE/dx∼α(mD 2)T2, where the scale of the coupling is determined by the (parametrically soft) Debye screening mass. Compared to previous expressions derived by Bjorken and other authors, dEB/dx∼α2T2ln(ET/mD 2), the rectified result takes into account the running of the coupling, as dictated by quantum corrections beyond tree level. As one significant consequence, due to asymptotic freedom, the QCD collisional energy loss becomes independent of the jet energy in the limit E≫T. It is argued why this resummation-improved perturbative result is useful to (re-) estimate the collisional energy loss for temperatures relevant in heavy ion phenomenology. We do a numerical calculation on the quark-loop effects on the dressed gluon propagator in the chiral limit. It is found that the quark-loop effects on the dressed gluon propagator are significant in solving the quark propagator in the rainbow approximation of the Dyson-Schwinger equation. The approach we used here is quite general and can also be used to calculate both the chemical potential and current quark mass dependence of the dressed gluon propagator.  相似文献

This article generalizes Schwinger’s mechanism for particle production in the time dependent field volume in the quasi-static approximation. Solution of DGLAP equations in the double leading log approximation for a small x gluon distribution function was used to derive the new formula for initial chromofield energy density. This initial chromofield energy is distributed among color neutral clusters or strings. These strings are stretched by the receding nucleus. From the proposed mechanism of string fragmentation or color field decay, the new formula for the rapidity spectrum of produced partons was derived. The text was submitted by the author in English.  相似文献

We study the statics of quasi-abelian quark and antiquark source charges in the approximation in which leading logarithm radiative corrections are retained in the gauge gluon effective action functional. We show that the partial differential equation for the flux function is of degenerating elliptic type, leading to flux confinement within a free boundary which is a characteristic. The static potential increases linearly for large source separations, with a logarithmic subdominant term.  相似文献
