The role of microstructure in the dynamic deformation and fracture of a dual phase, polycrystalline tungsten alloy under high-rate impact loading is investigated via experiments and modeling. The material studied consists of pure tungsten crystals embedded in a ductile binder alloy comprised of tungsten, nickel, and iron. The tungsten crystals are elongated in a preferred direction of extrusion during processing. Plate impact tests were conducted on samples oriented either perpendicular or parallel to the extrusion direction. Spatially resolved interferometric data from these tests were used to extract wave propagation behavior and spall strength dependent upon position in the sample microstructure. Finite element simulations of impact and spall in digitally reproduced microstructural geometries were conducted in parallel with the experiments. Finite deformation crystal plasticity theory describes the behavior of the pure tungsten and binder phases, and a stress- and temperature-based cohesive zone model captures fracture at grain and phase boundaries in the microstructure. In results from both experiments and modeling, the grain orientations affect the free-surface velocity profile and spall behavior. Some aspects of distributions of free-surface velocity and spall strength among different microstructure configurations are qualitatively similar between experimental and numerical results, while others are not as a result of differing scales of resolution and modeling assumptions. Following a comparison of experimental and numerical results for different microstructures, intergranular fracture is identified as an important mechanism underlying the spall event.  相似文献

The low-temperature (less than one-fourth of the melting temperature) creep deformation behavior of hexagonally close-packed (HCP) α-Ti–1.6 wt.% V was investigated. Creep tests were performed at various temperatures between room temperature and 205 °C at 95% of the respective yield stress at the different temperatures. The creep strain rate was found to increase with increasing temperature. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy revealed that slip and unusually slow twin growth, or time-dependent twinning, are active deformation mechanisms for the entire temperature range of this investigation. The activation energy for creep of this alloy was calculated to identify the rate-controlling deformation mechanism, and was found to increase with increasing creep strain. At low strain, the activation energy for creep was found to be close to the previously calculated activation energy for slip. At high strain, the calculated activation energy indicates that both slip and twinning are significant deformation mechanisms. The appearance of twinning at high strains is explained by a model for twin nucleation by dislocation pileups.  相似文献

An experimental investigation of the micro and macromechanical transformation behavior of polycrystalline NiTi shape memory alloys was undertaken. Special attention was paid to macroscopic banding, variant microstructure, effects of cyclic loading, strain rate and temperature effects. Use of an interference filter on the microscope enabled observation of grain boundaries and martensitic plate formation and growth without recourse to etching or other chemical surface preparation. Key results of the experiments on the NiTi include observation of localized plastic deformation after only a few cycles, excellent temperature and stress relaxation correlation, a refined definition of “full transformation” for polycrystalline materials, and strain rate dependent effects. Several of these findings have critical implications for understanding and modeling of shape memory alloy behavior.  相似文献

In this work, we develop a physically-based crystal plasticity model for the prediction of cyclic tension–compression deformation of multi-phase materials, specifically dual-phase (DP) steels. The model is elasto–plastic in nature and integrates a hardening law based on statistically stored dislocation density, localized hardening due to geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs), slip-system-level kinematic backstresses, and annihilation of dislocations. The model further features a two level homogenization scheme where the first level is the overall response of a two-phase polycrystalline aggregate and the second level is the homogenized response of the martensite polycrystalline regions. The model is applied to simulate a cyclic tension–compression–tension deformation behavior of DP590 steel sheets. From experiments, we observe that the material exhibits a typical decreasing hardening rate during forward loading, followed by a linear and then a non-linear unloading upon the load reversal, the Bauschinger effect, and changes in hardening rate during strain reversals. To predict these effects, we identify the model parameters using a portion of the measured data and validate and verify them using the remaining data. The developed model is capable of predicting all the particular features of the cyclic deformation of DP590 steel, with great accuracy. From the predictions, we infer and discuss the effects of GNDs, the backstresses, dislocation annihilation, and the two-level homogenization scheme on capturing the cyclic deformation behavior of the material.  相似文献

The crystallographic constitutive model under temperature gradient is developed and introduced to study the deformation and failure mechanisms of single crystal superalloy. Tensile tests of thin-walled pipe specimen at different temperatures without cooled air flow were carried out. Based on the experimental results, the temperature dependence of constitutive model was studied and the basic parameters of constitutive model were obtained. To investigate the deformation and failure mechanisms, the thin-walled pipe specimen with cooled air flow under temperature gradient were tested. Considered the fluid-solid interface (FSI), a finite element method (FEM) was proposed to simulate the process of tension. In FEM, the activation rate of slip system was defined as the failure law of specimen under temperature gradient. The simulation result was in good agreement with the experiment result. Furthermore, the fracture surface of the specimen was observed by the scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The microstructure revealed that the slip deformation belonged to {1 1 1} crystalplane is a principal failure mechanism of single crystal superalloy under temperature gradient. The results of the SEM also implied that the proposed FEM method can be used to systemically study the deformation and failure behavior of single crystal superalloy cooled blade.  相似文献

During machining processes, materials undergo severe deformations that lead to different behavior than in the case of slow deformation. The microstructure changes, as a consequence, affect the materials properties and therefore influence the functionality of the component. Developing material models capable of capturing such changes is therefore critical to better understand the interaction process–materials. In this paper, we introduce a new physics model associating Mechanical Threshold Stress (MTS) with Dislocation Density (DD) models. The modeling and the experimental results of a series of large strain experiments on polycrystalline copper (OFHC) involving sequences of shear deformation and strain rate (varying from quasi-static to dynamic) are very similar to those observed in processes such as machining. The Kocks–Mecking model, using the mechanical threshold stress as an internal state variable, correlates well with experimental results and strain rate jump experiments. This model was compared to the well-known Johnson–Cook model that showed some shortcomings in capturing the stain jump. The results show a high effect of rate sensitivity of strain hardening at large strains. Coupling the mechanical threshold stress dislocation density (MTS–DD), material models were implemented in the Abaqus/Explicit FE code. The model shows potentialities in predicting an increase in dislocation density and a reduction in cell size. It could ideally be used in the modeling of machining processes.

In order to investigate the impact of microstructures and deformation mechanisms on the ductility of materials, the criterion first proposed by Rice is applied to elastic–plastic tangent moduli derived from a large strain micromechanical model combined with a self-consistent scale-transition technique. This approach takes into account several microstructural aspects for polycrystalline aggregates: initial and induced textures, dislocation densities as well as softening mechanisms such that the behavior during complex loading paths can be accurately described.  相似文献

Electrospinning is a novel method for creating non-woven polymer mats that have high surface area and high porosity. These attributes make them ideal candidates for multifunctional composites. Understanding the mechanical properties as a function of fiber properties and mat microstructure can aid in designing these composites. Further, a constitutive model which captures the membrane stress–strain behavior as a function of fiber properties and the geometry of the fibrous network would be a powerful design tool. Here, mats electrospun from amorphous polyamide are used as a model system. The elastic–plastic behavior of single fibers are obtained in tensile tests. Uniaxial monotonic and cyclic tensile tests are conducted on non-woven mats. The mat exhibits elastic–plastic stress–strain behavior. The transverse strain behavior provides important complementary data, showing a negligible initial Poisson's ratio followed by a transverse:axial strain ratio greater than ?1:1 after an axial strain of 0.02. A triangulated framework has been developed to emulate the fibrous network structure of the mat. The micromechanically based model incorporates the elastic–plastic behavior of single fibers into a macroscopic membrane model of the mat. This representative volume element based model is shown to capture the uniaxial elastic–plastic response of the mat under monotonic and cyclic loading. The initial modulus and yield stress of the mat are governed by the fiber properties, the network geometry, and the network density. The transverse strain behavior is linked to discrete deformation mechanisms of the fibrous mat structure including fiber alignment, fiber bending, and network consolidation. The model is further validated in comparison to experiments under different constrained axial loading conditions and found to capture the constraint effect on stiffness, yield, post-yield hardening, and post-yield transverse strain behavior. Due to the direct connection between microstructure and macroscopic behavior, this model should be extendable to other electrospun systems and other two dimensional random fibrous networks.  相似文献

General cyclic plasticity results and detailed analyses of experimental data from constant plastic strain amplitude, completely reversed, tension–compression tests on polycrystalline nickel with two grain sizes are reported. These analyses focus on kinematic hardening behavior and are based on Armstrong–Frederick-type kinematic hardening rules and Masing-type assumptions. Juxtaposition of these analyses with observations of specimen surface relief and substructure evolution using TEM provides a context for discussion of mechanisms and modeling of nonlinear kinematic hardening and its relationship to heterogeneous microstructure in metals.  相似文献

We present a systematic investigation on the strain hardening and texture evolution in high manganese steels where twinning induced plasticity (TWIP) plays a significant role for the materials' plastic deformation. Motivated by the stress–strain behavior of typical TWIP steels with compositions of Fe, Mn, and C, we develop a mechanistic model to explain the strain-hardening in crystals where deformation twinning dominates the plastic deformation. The classical single crystal plasticity model accounting for both dislocation slip and deformation twinning are then employed to simulate the plastic deformation in polycrystalline TWIP steels. While only deformation twinning is activated for plasticity, the simulations with samples composed of voronoi grains cannot fully capture the texture evolution of the TWIP steel. By including both twinning deformation and dislocation slip, the model is able to capture both the stress–strain behaviors and the texture evolution in Fe–Mn–C TWIP steel in different boundary-value problems. Further analysis on the strain contributions by both mechanisms suggests that deformation twinning plays the dominant role at the initial stage of plasticity in TWIP steels, and dislocation slip becomes increasingly important at large strains.  相似文献

The predominant deformation mode during material failure is shear. In this paper, a crystal plasticity scheme for explicit time integration codes is developed based on a forward Euler algorithm. The numerical model is incorporated in the UMAT subroutine for implementing rate-dependent crystal plasticity model in LS-DYNA/Explicit. The sheet is modeled as a face centered cubic (FCC) polycrystalline aggregate, and a finite element analysis based on rate-dependent crystal plasticity is implemented to analyze the effects of three different strain paths consisting predominantly of shear. Finite element meshes containing texture data are created with solid elements. The material model can incorporate information obtained from electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and apply crystal orientation to each element as well as account for texture evolution. Single elements or multiple elements are used to represent each grain within a microstructure. The three dimensional (3D) polycrystalline microstructure of the aluminum alloy AA5754 is modeled and subjected to three different strain rates for each strain path. The effects of strain paths, strain rates and thermal softening on the formation of localized deformation are investigated. Simulations show that strain path is the most dominant factor in localized deformation and texture evolution.  相似文献

Mechanistic explanations for the plastic behavior of a wrought magnesium alloy are developed using a combination of experimental and simulation techniques. Parameters affecting the practical sheet formability, such as strain hardening rate, strain rate sensitivity, the degree of anisotropy, and the stresses and strains at fracture, are examined systematically by conducting tensile tests of variously oriented samples at a range of temperatures (room temperature to 250 °C) and strain rates (10−5–0.1 s−1). Polycrystal plasticity simulations are used to model the observed anisotropy and texture evolution. Strong in-plane anisotropy observed at low temperatures is attributed to the initial texture and the greater than anticipated non-basal cross-slip of dislocations with 〈a〉 type Burgers vectors. The agreement between the measured and simulated anisotropy and texture is further validated by direct observations of the dislocation microstructures using transmission electron microscopy. The increase in the ductility with temperature is accompanied by a decrease in the flow stress, an increase in the strain rate sensitivity, and a decrease in the normal anisotropy. Polycrystal simulations indicate that an increased activity of non-basal, 〈c + a〉, dislocations provides a self-consistent explanation for the observed changes in the anisotropy with increasing temperature.  相似文献

In the present research, microstructure of akind of limnetic shell (Hyriopsis cumingii) is observed and measured by using the scanning electron microscopy, and mechanical behavior experiments of the shell nacre are carried out by using bending and tensile tests. The dependence of mechanical properties of the shell nacre on its microstructure is analyzed by using a modified shear-lag model, and the overall stress-strain relation is obtained. The experimental results reveal that the mechanical properties of shell nacre strongly depend on the water contents of the limnetic shell. Dry nacre shows a brittle behavior, whereas wetting nacre displays a strong ductility. Compared to the tensile test, the bending test overestimates the strength and underestimates the Young's modulus. The modified shear-lag model can characterize the deformation features of nacre effectively.  相似文献

A continuum damage framework is developed and coupled with an existing crystal plasticity framework, to model failure initiation in irradiated bcc polycrystalline materials at intermediate temperatures. Constitutive equations for vacancy generation due to inelastic deformation, void nucleation due to vacancy condensation, and diffusion-assisted void growth are developed. The framework is used to simulate failure initiation at dislocation channel interfaces and grain boundaries ahead of a sharp notch. Evolution of the microstructure is considered in terms of the evolution of inelastic deformation, vacancy concentration, and void number density and radius. Evolution of the damage, i.e., volume fraction of the voids, is studied as a function of applied deformation. Effects of strain rate and temperature on failure initiation are also studied. The framework is used to compute the fracture toughness of irradiated specimens for various loading histories and notch geometries. Crack growth resistance of the irradiated specimens are computed and compared to that of virgin specimens. Results are compared to available experimental data.  相似文献

In this paper, a finite-element modelling framework is presented with explicit representation of polycrystalline microstructure for a tempered martensite ferritic steel. A miniature notched specimen was manufactured from P91 steel with a 20,000 h service history and tested at room temperature under three point bending. Deformation at the microscale is quantified by electron back scattered diffraction (EBSD) before and after mechanical loading. A representative volume element was developed, based on the initial EBSD scan, and a crystal plasticity model used to account for slip-based inelastic deformation in the material. The model showed excellent correlation with the experimental data when the relevant comparisons were made.  相似文献

The rate-dependent behavior of micron-scale model planar crystals is investigated using the framework of mechanism-based discrete dislocation plasticity. Long-range interactions between dislocations are accounted for through elasticity. Mechanism-based constitutive rules are used to represent the short-range interactions between dislocations, including dislocation multiplication and dislocation escape at free surfaces. Emphasis is laid on circumstances where the deformed samples are not statistically homogeneous. The calculations show that dimensional constraints selectively set the operating dislocation mechanisms, thus giving rise to the phenomenon of exhaustion hardening whereby the applied strain rate is predominantly accommodated by elastic deformation. When conditions are met for this type of hardening to take place, the calculations reproduce some interesting qualitative features of plastic deformation in microcrystals, such as flow intermittency over coarse time-scales and large values of the flow stress with no significant accumulation of dislocation density. In addition, the applied strain rate is varied down to 0.1 s−1 and is found to affect the rate of exhaustion hardening.  相似文献

A near-γ TiAl based alloy with 2 at% of Nb was investigated by means of collaborative research based on transmission electron microscopy and in-situ neutron diffraction techniques with the aim to study mechanical twinning and its role within the mechanisms governing fatigue response and material properties. In-situ neutron diffraction measurements were performed during low cycle fatigue straining at room temperature. Induced lattice strain related to the formation of deformation twins was detected and used to follow changes in the macroscopic material response caused by the twinning process during cycling. A microscopic insight was realised by using several transmission electron microscopy techniques to reveal in detail an internal deformation microstructure of the material at the beginning as well as at the end of the fatigue life. The study was focused on the first loading cycles where the material shows intense cyclic hardening. The effect of mechanical twinning on the material behaviour at several stages of the fatigue life is discussed for two different total strain amplitudes of 0.2% and 0.4%.  相似文献
