Theoretical analysis is performed on the linear dynamic equations of thin cylindrical shells to find the error committed by making the Donnell assumption and the neglect of in-plane inertia. At first, the effect of these approximations is studied on a shell with classical simply supported boundary condition. The same approximations are then investigated for other boundary conditions from a consistent approximate solution of the eigenvalue problem. The Donnell assumption is valed at frequencies high compared with the ring frequencies, for finite length thin shells. The error in the eigenfrequencies from omitting tangential inertia is appreciable for modes with large circumferential and axial wave lengths, independent of shell thickness and boundary conditions.

Dispersion relations are determined for circumferential waves propagating in a layered, circular cylinder by using shell equations to approximate the behavior of the outer layer. These equations include the effects of transverse shear deformation and rotatory inertia. The cylinder consists of an elastic core in smooth contact with a hollow, circular cylinder of distinctly different elastic properties. Two distinct modes exist as the shell thickness reduces to zero. One mode is recognized to be surface waves on the convex cylindrical surface of the core; the second mode is associated with long longitudinal waves in the shell. The approximate dispersion curves for these modes are compared with curves obtained by employing elasticity equations for the layer. As the curvature increases, the agreement of the two theories becomes progressively poorer whether or not any disagreement exists for the case of no curvature. The agreement of the two theories is better when the layer is relatively stiff than when the layer is relatively soft. The shell equations simplify the calculations necessary to produce the dispersion curves.

An analytical method is developed to study radiated sound power characteristics from an infinite submerged periodically stiffened cylindrical shell excited by a radial cosine harmonic line force. The harmonic motion of the shell and the pressure field in the fluid are described by Flügge shell equations and Helmholtz equation, respectively. By using periodic theory of space harmonic analysis, the response of the periodic structure to harmonic excitations has been obtained by expanding it in terms of a series of space harmonics. Radiated sound power on the shell wall along the axial direction and the influence of different parameters on the results are studied, respectively. A conclusion is drawn that the stiffeners have a great influence at low and high frequencies while have a slight influence at intermediate frequencies for low circumferential mode orders. The work will give some guidelines for noise reduction of this kind of shell.

This paper is concerned with the theoretical analysis and correlation with the numerical results of the displacement time histories of the cylindrically curved laminated composite shells exposed to normal blast shock waves. The laminated composite shell is clamped at its all edges. The dynamic equation of the cylindrical shell used in this study is valid under the assumptions made in Love's theory of thin elastic shells. The constitutive equations of laminated composite shells are given in the frame of effective modulus theory. The governing equation of the cylindrical shell is solved by the Runge-Kutta method. In addition, a finite element modeling and analysis are presented and compared with the theoretical results. The peak deflections and response frequencies obtained from theoretical and numerical analyses are in agreement. The effects of material properties and geometrical properties are examined on the dynamic behaviour.

The initial-boundary-value problem for the equations describing motion of a thin, medium-length, non-circular cylindrical shell is examined. The shell edges are not necessarily plane curves, with the conditions of a joint support, a rigid clamp or a free edge being considered as the boundary conditions. The shell is supposed to experience normal internal (or external) dynamic pressure which may be non-uniform in the circumferential direction. It is assumed that the initial displacements and velocities of the points at the shell middle surface are functions decreasing rapidly away from some generatrix. Using the complex WKB method the asymptotic solution of the governing equations is constructed by superimposing localized families (wave packets) of bending waves running in the circumferential direction. The dependence of frequencies, group velocities, amplitudes and other dynamic characteristics upon variable pressure and geometrical parameters of the shell are studied. As an example, the wave forms of motion of a circular cylindrical shell with sloping edges under growing dynamic pressure are considered. The effect of localization of bending vibrations near the longest generator as well as the effects of reflection, focusing and increasing amplitude in the running wave packets are revealed.

The formation of scattering field from a water-filled cylindrical shell was studied. The analytic solutions of scattering field are derived using elastic thin shell theory and Sommerfeld-Watson Transformation(SWT) method.Complex wave-number poles of circumferential waves are found numerically, the phase speed and attenuation of circumferential waves between the situation of a hollow cylindrical shell and a water-filled cylindrical shell are compared. The synthesis of backscattering form functions which are sum of specular reflection component and circumferential waves is consistent with normal mode result. The calculated echo sequences of additional fluid circumferential waves are compared with experimental results. The results show that richer resonance peaks appeared in the backscattering form functions of a water-filled cylindrical shell and the formation of echo’s structure are due to re-radiation effects of additional fluid circumferential waves.

The influence of large heterogeneity on the axisymmetric vibration characteristics of thin, composite cylindrical shells is studied, both analytically and numerically. In the neighborhood of the axisymmetric breathing mode, frequency spectra for shells of infinite and finite length are shown to be influenced qualitatively as well as quantitatively by large deviations from material and geometric symmetry in layer arrangement. A study of mode coupling in a semi-infinite shell is made for both end modes and modes with stationary frequency with real finite wave number, the latter being uniquely generated by a special class of heterogeneity. In each case, analytical estimates are given for frequencies, wave numbers, and modal amplitudes as functions of material and geometric properties of the shell.

The relationship between the dominant mode of the submerged thin cylindrical shell and the flexural wave velocity is investigated. The natural frequency corresponding to the vibration mode is obtained as the solution of characteristic equation of thin cylindrical shell. However, it is difficult to estimate the dominant mode, especially if two or more vibration modes are involved. To estimate the dominant mode of a thin shell in vacuo, the concept of “modified bending stiffness” has been introduced. In this paper, the concept of modified bending stiffness is extended to estimate the dominant mode of a submerged thin cylindrical shell. The dominant mode of a submerged thin cylindrical shell is theoretically discriminated from the other mode based on the smallness of the modified bending stiffness of the submerged shell. The validity of our theory is confirmed by a good agreement between theoretical and experimental results on flexural wave velocity.

The problem of the diffraction of a zero-order convergent cylindrical wave by a cylindrical shell with a longitudinal fixation along one of its generatrices is considered. The problem is solved on the basis of using the so-called helical waves, which are aperiodic eigensolutions to the equations of the shell motion. The diffraction field is represented in the form of a convergent series in cylindrical harmonics. The method of the solution allows for a generalization to several cases of longitudinal fixation with conditions of different forms. The calculation of the scattering amplitude of the diffraction field is carried out for various frequencies and shell parameters.

Generation of electromagnetic waves by an annular shell of plasma rotating in crossed radial electrostatic and axial magnetic fields in a cylindrical resonator is investigated theoretically. Dispersion relations are obtained describing the interaction of the waves with the plasma. It is shown that generation of waves by a narrow plasma shell is possible due to a cyclotron resonance, Čerenkov resonance, or plasma resonance. Here we consider a Čerenkov resonance, where the velocities of the plasma components and the phase velocities of the waves are perpendicular to the constant magnetic field. The frequencies and growth rates of the waves are found under conditions of the above-mentioned resonances in a uniform and in a nonuniform plasma shell. Advantages and disadvantages of wave generation under various conditions are noted. Zh. Tekh.

A general analytical method for free vibrations of thick cylindrical shells is presented in this paper. The problems associated with thick cylindrical shells are of considerable engineering importance in numerous applications. One important application of such shells is the stator of electrical machines, where the thick stator-core with teeth and windings is encased by a thin frame provided with cooling ribs. In order to design a quiet electrical machine, the accurate determination of resonant frequencies and vibrational characteristics of the stator is essential. The well known energy method is used in the analysis presented for the derivation of the frequency equation of the stator. As a first step, the analysis is applied to a simple and smooth model of thick circular cylindrical shell having substantial axial length as used in actual stators. The analysis delivers information on resonant frequencies and associated mode shapes. The method of analysis and the theoretical results obtained for the model are presented. The experimental verification of the analysis is reported in a companion paper.

Natural frequencies and buckling loads for cylindrical shells having linearly varying thickness are obtained by using a segmentation technique. The present results for free vibration of a cylinder compare very well with those obtained previously. The effect of the thickness variation on the frequencies of a cylindrical shell is studied. Frequencies are also calculated for a cylinder of variable thickness under axial compression and a relationship between the frequency and axial compression is obtained for a particular wave number.

The influence of a moving fluid confined by a solid circular cylindrical shell on the propagation of acoustic waves generated by sources located on the circular cylindrical shell is examined. An expression for the acoustic pressure in a moving fluid is derived including azimuthal asymmetry effects in the general case, where the fluid velocity points along the cylindrical shell axis and can be written as an infinite power series expansion in the radial co-ordinate. Secondly, continuity of pressure and normal velocity at the liquid-shell interface is imposed to (a) derive a set of coupled differential equations governing the possible vibrational modes of the shell and (b) determine dispersion relations, i.e., mode propagation constants β as a function of frequency as well as changes in β values accomodated by flow. In the remaining part of the paper, phase speed changes with flow and transit-time differentials of circular cylindrical shell vibrations are discussed with special emphasis to flow measurement properties.

An analysis is presented of the free vibration of non-circular cylindrical shells with a variable circumferential profile expressed as an arbitrary function. The applicability of thin-shell theory is assumed and the governing equations of vibration of a non-circular cylindrical shell are written in a matrix differential equation by using the transfer matrix of the shell. Once the transfer matrix has been determined by numerical integration of the matrix equation, the natural frequencies and mode shapes of vibration are calculated numerically in terms of the matrix elements. The method is applied to cylindrical shells of three or four-lobed cross-section, and the effects of the length of the shell and the radius at the lobed corners on the vibration are studied.

We present here a study of the acoustic breathing modes for infinitely long cylinders, cylindrical shells and composite cylinders of general anisotropic crystals. We assume cylindrical anisotropy for the systems studied. We obtain expressions in closed form for their frequencies in the case of cylinders and cylindrical shells, valid for any anisotropic material, thus including up to 21 independent elastic constants. In the case of the lowest breathing mode of a thin cylindrical shell we obtain a simple analytical formula. This can be used to obtain a first estimate of the breathing mode frequency in nanotubes for any material. In the case of core–shell and composite cylinders we obtain the expressions for the secular determinant. We calculate the frequencies of the lowest acoustic breathing mode of Au, CdSe, InAs, GaAs, Ag and Bi nanowires obtained recently by different experimental groups. We also present results for the acoustic breathing modes of Au/Ag and ZnS/SiO2 core–shell nanowires produced recently.

An analysis is presented for the free vibration of a simply supported non-circular cylindrical shell with longitudinal interior partitions. For this purpose, the governing equations of vibration of a non-circular cylindrical shell including a plate as special case are written in a matrix differential equation by using the transfer matrix in the circumferential direction. Once the matrix has been determined, the entire structure matrix is obtained by the product of the transfer matrix of the shell and the point matrix at the joint of the structure matrix. The method is applied to approximately elliptical cylindrical shells with an interior plate, and the natural frequencies and the mode shapes of vibration are calculated numerically, giving the results.

An analysis is presented for the vibration characteristics of thin rotating cylindrical shells with various boundary conditions by use of Fourier series expansion method. Based on Sanders’ shell equations, the governing equations of motion which take into account the effects of centrifugal and Coriolis forces as well as the initial hoop tension due to rotating are derived. The displacement field is expressed as a product of Fourier series expressions which represents the axial modal displacements and trigonometric functions which represents the circumferential modal displacements. Stokes’ transformation is employed to derive the derivatives of the Fourier series expressions. Then, through the process of formula derivation, an explicit expression of the exact frequency equation can be obtained for a thin rotating cylinder with classical boundary conditions of any type. Once the frequency equation has been determined, the frequencies are calculated numerically. To validate the present analysis, comparisons between the results of the present method and previous studies are performed and very good agreement is achieved. Finally, the method is applied to investigate the vibration characteristics of thin rotating cylindrical shells under various boundaries, and the results are presented.
