Polymerization‐induced self‐assembly (PISA) has become the preferred method of preparing self‐assembled nano‐objects based on amphiphilic block copolymers. The PISA methodology has also been extended to the realization of colloidal nanocomposites, such as polymer–silica hybrid particles. In this work, we compare two methods to prepare nanoparticles based on self‐assembly of block copolymers bearing a core‐forming block with a reactive alkoxysilane moiety (3‐(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate, MPS), namely (i) RAFT emulsion polymerization using a hydrophilic macroRAFT agent and (ii) solution‐phase self‐assembly upon slow addition of a selective solvent. Emulsion polymerization under both ab initio and seeded conditions were studied, as well the use of different initiating systems. Effective and reproducible chain extension (and hence PISA) of MPS via thermally initiated RAFT emulsion polymerization was compromised due to the hydrolysis and polycondensation of MPS occurring under the reaction conditions employed. A more successful approach to block copolymer self‐assembly was achieved via polymerization in a good solvent for both blocks (1,4‐dioxane) followed by the slow addition of water, yielding spherical nanoparticles that increased in size as the length of the solvophobic block was increased. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Stable and aggregation‐free “gold nanoparticle–polymeric micelle” conjugates were prepared using a new and simple protocol enabled by the hydrogen bonding between surface‐capping ligands and polymeric micelles. Individual gold nanoparticles were initially capped using a phosphatidylthio–ethanol lipid and further conjugated with a star poly(styrene‐block‐glutamic acid) copolymer micelle using a one‐pot preparation method. The morphology and stability of these gold–polymer conjugates were characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV–vis spectroscopy. The self‐assembly of this class of polymer‐b‐polypeptide in aqueous an medium to form spherical micelles and further their intermicelle reorganization to form necklace‐like chains was also investigated. TEM and laser light scattering techniques were employed to study the morphology and size of these micelles. Polymeric micelles were formed with diameters in the range of 65–75 nm, and supermicellular patterns were observed. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. For the first time the possibility to obtain nanostructures by self‐assembly of chitosan polyampholytic derivative was demonstrated. The self‐assembly of N‐carboxyethylchitosan (CECh) took place only near its isoelectric point (pH 5.0–5.6). Out of the pH range 5.0–5.6, CECh aqueous solutions behaved as real solutions. Dynamic light scattering and atomic force microscopy analyses revealed that spherically shaped or rod/worm‐like nanosized assemblies were formed depending on the polymer molar mass, pH value, and polymer concentration. CECh of two different molar masses was studied in concentrations ranging from 0.01 to 0.1 mg/mL. The structures from CECh of weight‐average molar mass (Mw ) 4.5 × 103 g/mol were spherical regardless the pH and polymer concentration. In contrast, CECh of high molar mass (HMMCECh, Mw = 6.7 × 105 g/mol) formed self‐assemblies with spherical shape only at pH 5.0 and 5.6. At pH 5.2 spherical nanoparticles were obtained only at polymer concentration 0.01 mg/mL. The mean hydrodynamic diameter (Dh) of the obtained nanoparticles was in the range from 30 to 980 nm. On increasing the concentration, aggregation of the nanoparticles appeared, and at HMMCECh concentration 0.1 mg/mL, rod/worm‐like structures were obtained. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A main‐chain, azoaromatic, chromophore‐functionalized polyelectrolyte with an oligomeric molecular weight was synthesized by the reaction of 4,4′‐azobispyridine and 1,6‐dibromohexane. The polyelectrolyte was designed to contain ionic groups to impart electrostatic self‐assembly with polyanion and azoaromatic groups for photoprocessability. The polymer solution exhibited a solvatochromic effect, having different absorption maxima in water (294 nm) and N,N‐dimethylformamide (400 nm). By a change in the counteranions of the bispyridinium groups, the solubility of the polymer could be controlled, and this made it possible to fabricate electrostatic assembled films or spin‐cast films for further applications. The direct photofabrication of laser‐induced interference patterns on polymer surfaces with large surface modulation was also investigated with an argon ion laser. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. An amphiphilic diblock copolymer composed of a photoresponsive dialkoxycyanostilbene polymethacrylate and poly(ethylene oxide) (PDACS‐b‐PEO) was synthesized and its photophysical and aggregation properties were investigated. The amphiphilic nature of the polymer caused it to self‐assemble in water, and dynamic light scattering studies indicated formation of spherical aggregates with an average size of 160 nm. Atomic force microscopy images of dried films cast from solutions containing the polymer aggregates revealed supramolecular aggregates with a spherical morphology. Photoisomerization of the stilbene chromophore in PDACS‐b‐PEO on UV irradiation resulted in the destruction of the self‐assembled superstructures which could be attributed both to change in shape of the chromophore from the linear trans isomer to the bent cis isomer which would hinder self‐aggregation of the molecules and the higher dipole moment of the cis isomer leading to a reduction of the hydrophobic nature of the stilbene containing block of PDACS‐b‐PEO. It was observed that hydrophobic dyes such as curcumin could be encapsulated within the hydrophobic interior of the spherical micellar aggregates from which the encapsulated dye could be released on UV irradiation. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Statistical and amphiphilic block copolymers bearing cinnamoyl groups were prepared by ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP). The UV‐induced [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction of polymer bound cinnamic acid groups was studied in polymer thin films as well as in block copolymer micelles. In both cases, exposure to UV‐light for 10 min led to a crosslinking conversion of about 60%, as determined by FT‐IR spectroscopy and UV–vis absorption measurements. Time based IR‐spectroscopy revealed a maximum conversion of 78% reached after an irradiation time of about 16 min. For micelles obtained from polymers bearing 5 mol % or more cinnamoyl groups, the crosslinking reaction proceeded smoothly, yielding in crosslinked particles which were stable in a non‐selective solvent (CHCl3). Diameters determined by dynamic light scattering in the selective solvent (MeOH) were similar for both, non‐crosslinked and crosslinked micelles, whereas diameters of crosslinked micelles in the non‐selective solvent (CHCl3) were significantly larger compared to MeOH samples. This strategy of direct self assembly of block‐copolymers in a selective solvent followed by “clean” crosslinking, without the need for additional crosslinking reagents or crosslinking initiators, provides a straight forward approach toward ROMP‐based polymeric nano‐particles. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We demonstrate the synthesis and characterization of star‐shaped crystalline‐coil block copolymers with four arms consisting of an inner block of poly(ethylene oxide) and an outer semicrystalline compartment of poly(ferrocenyldimethylsilane), [PEO50b‐PFDMS35]4. The materials were synthesized by transition‐metal‐catalyzed ring‐opening polymerization of dimethylsila[1]ferrocenophane in the presence of silane‐functionalized four‐arm PEO stars as macroinitiators and they exhibited a moderate polydispersity (PDI?1.4). Self‐assembly in mixtures of THF and different alcohols as selective solvents for the PEO block resulted in the formation of semicrystalline vesicles (ethanol, 1‐butanol) or large, rather ill‐defined, spherical structures (methanol). Further, both the rate of addition of the selective co‐solvent and the overall solvent/non‐solvent ratio drastically affected the size and stability of the self‐assembled particles. We could also show that a photoacid generator, as a model for an active substance, can be encapsulated and the UV‐induced generation of HCl resulted in a straightforward degradation of the organometallic vesicles.  相似文献

A novel visible light responsive random copolymer consisting of hydrophobic azobenzene‐containing acrylate units and hydrophilic acrylic acid units has been prepared. The azobenzene molecule bearing methoxy groups at all four ortho positions is readily synthesized by one‐step conversion of diazotization. The as‐prepared polymer can self‐assemble into nanoparticles in water due to its amphiphilic nature. The tetra‐o‐methoxy‐substituted azobenzene‐functionalized polymer can exhibit the trans‐to‐cis photoswitching under the irradiation with green light of 520 nm and the cis‐to‐trans photoswitching under the irradiation with blue light of 420 nm in both solution and aggregate state. The morphologies of the self‐assembled nanoparticles are revealed by TEM and DLS. The controlled release of loaded molecules from the nanoparticles can be realized by adjusting pH value since the copolymer possesses pH responsive acrylic acid groups. The fluorescence of loaded Nile Red in the nanoparticles can be tuned upon the visible light irradiation. The reversible photoswitching of the azobenzene‐functionalized polymer under visible light may endow the polymer with wide applications without using ultraviolet light at all. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The use of amphiphilic triblock copolymers bearing a reactive alkoxysilane middle block as polymeric stabilizers is reported in this work. A series of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate‐b‐(3‐trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate‐b‐benzyl methacrylate (PEGMA‐b‐MPS‐b‐BzMA) triblock copolymers were prepared by RAFT solution polymerization and polymerization‐induced self‐assembly (PISA), respectively, where the various block lengths and overall composition were varied. The copolymers prepared by solution polymerization were employed as oil‐in‐water stabilizers where upon application of a catalyst, the 3‐(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate (MPS) block at the droplet interface was crosslinked to yield capsule‐like structures. The effectiveness of interfacial crosslinking was validated by dynamic light scattering and electron microscopy. In situ self‐assembly by the PISA method resulted in spherical nanoparticles of controllable size that were readily crosslinked by addition of base, with significant enhancement of colloidal stability. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. For the films and powder of polymers containing conductive oligomer are usually obtained from solution, the choice of better solvents for the regular arrangement of oligomers is very important for the higher conductivity. Because of the poor solubility of the oligomers, it is difficult to study the arrangement directly in most common solvents, so, we synthesized a triblock copolymer, mPEG2k‐aniline pentamer‐mPEG2k, as the model to investigate the arrangement–solvent relationship. For the poor solubility of the AP block in common solvents, the copolymer self‐assembled into spheric micelles in toluene and into lamellar crystals in water and THF. The crystallinity (Xc) and crystallization temperature (Tc) values of mPEG blocks in powders prepared from different solvents differed obviously, which may be the effect of different self‐assembled structures. From the two‐phase model of one‐dimensional electron density correlation function of SAXS, the long period of copolymer prepared from THF was presumably equal to the long period of pure mPEG plus the chain length of AP, which demonstrates that the AP blocks arrange regularly in the noncrystalline regions. In the selected solvents, the ones with higher polarity and better solubility induced more regular arrangement of AP blocks, which may be useful for choosing solvents for preparation of higher conductivity polymers' films containing aniline oligomers. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Peptide–polymer conjugates are versatile class of biomaterials composed of a peptide block covalently linked with a synthetic polymer block. This report demonstrates the synthesis of peptide‐poly(tert‐butyl methacrylate) (Peptide‐PtBMA) conjugates of varying molecular weights via a “grafting from” atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) technique using as‐synthesized peptide‐based initiator in toluene. Peptide‐PtBMA conjugate is soluble in many organic solvents and undergoes self‐assembly into micro/nanospheres in DMF/THF as observed from both FESEM and DLS results. The conjugate micro/nanospheres are nothing but the composite micelles formed by the secondary aggregation of primary micelles generated initially in these organic solvents. The hydrolysis of tert‐butyl groups of Peptide‐PtBMA conjugate leads to the formation of peptide‐poly(methacrylic acid) (Peptide‐PMA) conjugate. The circular dichroism (CD) analysis exhibits the presence of β‐sheet conformation of peptide moiety in synthesized conjugates. The formed Peptide‐PMA conjugate is soluble in water and owing to its amphiphilic character, the conjugate molecules self‐assemble into spherical micelles as well as worm‐like micelles upon increasing the concentration of conjugate in water. However, the sodium salt of Peptide‐PMA conjugates (Peptide‐PMAS) self‐assembles into only spherical swollen micelles in water at higher (pH ~10). The critical aggregation concentrations (CACs) of both Peptide‐PMA and Peptide‐PMAS micelles are measured by fluorescence spectroscopy. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Amphiphilic block‐graft copolymers mPEG‐b‐P(DTC‐ADTC‐g‐Pal) were synthesized by ring‐opening polymerization of 2,2‐dimethyltrimethylene carbonate (DTC) and 2,2‐bis(azidomethyl)trimethylene carbonate (ADTC) with poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether (mPEG) as an initiator, followed by the click reaction of propargyl palmitate and the pendant azido groups on the polymer chains. Stable micelle solutions of the amphiphilic block‐graft copolymers could be prepared by adding water to a THF solution of the polymer followed by the removal of the organic solvent by dialysis. Dynamic light scattering measurements showed that the micelles had a narrow size distribution. Transmission electron microscopy images displayed that the micelles were in spherical shape. The grafted structure could enhance the interaction of polymer chains with drug molecules and improve the drug‐loading capacity and entrapment efficiency. Further, the amphiphilic block‐graft copolymers mPEG‐b‐P(DTC‐ADTC‐g‐Pal) were low cytotoxic and had more sustained drug release behavior. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Hydrogen bonding self‐assemblies were formed in an aqueous medium from a pair of an amphiphilic ABA triblock copolymer and a hydrophobic homopolymer, both with a triple hydrogen bonding site that was complementary to each other and precisely placed at the main‐chain center: (PEGMA)m–(MMA)n– ADA –(MMA)n–(PEGMA)m and (MMA)p– DAD –(MMA)p ( A = hydrogen acceptor; D = hydrogen donor; PEGMA: PEG methacrylate; MMA: methyl methacrylate). The polymers were synthesized by the ruthenium‐catalyzed living radial polymerization with bifunctional initiators (Br– ADA –Br and Cl– DAD –Cl) aiming at pinpoint chain center functionalization to give a symmetric segmental sequence; ADA and DAD initiators were derived from 2,6‐diaminopyridine and thymine, respectively. On mixed equimolar in tetrahydrofuran (THF), both polymers spontaneously associated, and the apparently 1:1 assembly further grew into higher aggregate particles on subsequent addition of water. The aggregates in water/THF were relatively stable and uniform in size, which most likely stems from the intermolecular complementary hydrogen bond interaction at polymer chain centers. In sharp contrast, an equimolar mixture of ADA ‐block polymer and DAD ‐free poly(MMA) in water/THF resulted in larger and irregular particles, and thus short‐lived to eventually collapse. These results indicate that, however structurally marginal, precise pinpoint functionalization of macromolecular chains allows stable self‐assemblies via complementary hydrogen bond interaction even in aqueous media. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Numerical self‐consistent field (SCF) lattice computations allow a priori determination of the equilibrium morphology and size of supramolecular structures originating from the self‐assembly of neutral block copolymers in selective solvents. The self‐assembly behavior of poly(ethylene oxide)‐block‐poly‐ε‐caprolactone (PEO‐PCL) block copolymers in water was studied as a function of the block composition, resulting in equilibrium structure and size diagrams. Guided by the theoretical SCF predictions, PEO‐PCL block copolymers of various compositions have been synthesized and assembled in water. The size and morphology of the resulting structures have been characterized by small‐angle X‐ray scattering, cryogenic transmission electron microscopy, and multiangle dynamic light scattering. The experimental results are consistent with the SCF computations. These findings show that SCF is applicable to build up roadmaps for amphiphilic polymers in solution, where control over size and shape are required, which is relevant, for instance, when designing spherical micelles for drug delivery systems © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A novel biocompatible polymer was prepared by grafting the derivate of β ‐cyclodextrin (6‐SH ‐β ‐CD ) onto poly(3,4‐dihydroxycinnamic acid) (PDHCA ) via Michael addition. PDHCA ‐β ‐CD nanoparticles were prepared by the self‐assembly of amphiphilic PDHCA ‐β ‐CD polymer with N,N ‐dimethylformamide (DMF ) as good solvent and water as poor solvent. The PDHCA ‐β ‐CD nanoparticles were monodispersed with spherical morphology as shown in the scanning electron microscopic (SEM ) images in accord with the result of dynamic light scattering (DLS ) measurement. The size of the nanoparticles could be controlled from 60 to 180 nm by tuning the grafting degree (GD ) of PDHCA ‐β ‐CD polymer and also significantly influenced by the amount of water used during the process. These as‐prepared nanoparticles were stable without any significant change in the particle size after six‐months’ storage and even after being irradiated by UV at λ >280 nm for hours. The formation mechanism of PDHCA ‐β ‐CD nanoparticles was explored. The content of doxorubicin (DOX ) loaded onto the nanoparticles was up to 39% with relatively high loading efficiency (approximately 78.8% of initial DOX introduced was loaded). In vitro release studies suggested that DOX released slowly from PDHCA ‐β ‐CD nanoparticles. These features strongly support the potential of developing PDHCA ‐β ‐CD nanoparticles as carriers for the controlled delivery of drug.  相似文献

Counterion binding in Na poly(acrylate) gel immersed in water/organic solvent [ethanol (EtOH), acetonitrile (AcN), or tetrahydrofuran (THF)] mixtures was investigated by 23Na‐NMR spectroscopy. With an increase in the content of an organic solvent (~40–50 vol %), the 23Na chemical shift significantly moved downfield on a gel collapse. This downfield shift strongly suggests that the gel collapse was induced by contact ion‐pair formation between the counterion and the carboxyl anion on the polymer. With a further increase in the solvent content (~90 vol %), the chemical shift for an EtOH system showed a slight upfield shift, while THF and AcN systems maintained downfield shifts. The contrasting behaviors for EtOH and the latter two solvent systems were interpreted as being caused by desolvation and resolvation of bound Na+ counterions because of deswelling and reswelling of the respective gels in the pertinent solvent concentration regions. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Reported here is self‐assembly behavior in selective solvent of diblock copolymers with relatively long corona‐forming block compared to core‐forming block. Three diblock copolymers, poly(ethylene glycol) monomethyl ether‐b‐poly(methacryloyl‐L ‐leucine methyl ester), also denoted as MPEG‐b‐PMALM copolymer, were prepared by fixing MPEG block with an average number of repeating units of 115, whereas varying PMALM block with an average number of repeating unit of 44, 23, 9, respectively. Multiple morphologies, such as sphere, cylinder, vesicle, and their coexisted structures from self‐assembly of these diblock copolymers in aqueous media by changing block nonselective solvent and initial polymer concentration used in preparation, were demonstrated directly via TEM observation. These results herein might, therefore, demonstrate as an example that a wide range of morphologies can be accessed not only from “crew‐cut micelles” but also from “star‐micelles” by controlling over preparation strategies. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined heterotelechelic poly(styrene) carrying thymine/diaminopyridine (DAP) (Mn,SEC = 9300, PDI = 1.04) and Hamilton wedge (HW)/cyanuric acid (CA) (Mn,SEC = 8200, PDI = 1.04) bonding motifs are prepared via a combination of controlled/living radical polymerization and copper catalyzed azide/alkyne “click” chemistry and are subsequently self‐assembled as single chains to emulate—on a simple level—the self‐folding behavior of natural biomacromolecules. Hydrogen nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) in deuterated dichloromethane and dynamic light scattering analyses provides evidence for the hydrogen bonding interactions between the α‐thymine and ω‐DAP as well as α‐CA and ω‐HW chain ends of the heterotelechelic polymers leading to circular entropy driven single chain self‐assembly. This study demonstrates that the choice of NMR solvent is important for obtaining well‐resolved NMR spectra of the self‐assembled structures. In addition, steric effects on the HW can affect the efficiency of the self‐assembly process. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2011  相似文献

A novel double brush‐shaped copolymer with amphiphilic polyacrylate‐b‐poly(ethylene glycol)‐b‐poly acrylate copolymer (PA‐b‐PEG‐b‐PA) as a backbone and thermosensitive poly(N‐isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) long side chains at both ends of the PEG was synthesized via an atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) route, and the structure was confirmed by FTIR, 1H NMR, and SEC. The thermosensitive self‐assembly behavior was examined via UV‐vis, TEM, DLS, and surface tension measurements, etc. The self‐assembled micelles, with low critical solution temperatures (LCST) of 34–38 °C, form irregular fusiform and/or spherical morphologies with single, double, and petaling cores in aqueous solution at room temperature, while above the LCST the micelles took on more regular and smooth spherical shapes with diameter ranges from 45 to 100 nm. The micelle exhibits high stabilities even in simulated physiological media, with low critical micellization concentration (CMC) up to 5.50, 4.89, and 5.05 mg L?1 in aqueous solution, pH 1.4 and 7.4 PBS solutions, respectively. The TEM and DLS determination reveled that the copolymer micelle had broad size distribution below its LCST while it produces narrow and homogeneous size above the LCST. The cytotoxicity was investigated by MTT assays to elucidate the application potential of the as‐prepared block polymer brushes as drug controlled release vehicles. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We report on the generation of surface attached polymer networks through C,H insertion reactions based on carbene intermediates. To this copolymers based on N,N‐dimethyl acrylamide, which contain α‐diazo ester groups, are generated and coated onto a solid substrate covered with a self‐assembled monolayer of a silane. After deposition, films having thicknesses of approximately 120 nm are irradiated with UV light having a wavelength of 254 nm or 360 nm or heated to temperatures between 80 and 180 °C. During the light or heat‐induced activation process, carbenes are formed, which react via C—H insertion with any neighboring polymer chain and/or with the self‐assembled monolayer on the substrate, thus forming surface‐attached polymer networks. To follow the kinetics of the crosslinking process, the conditions are adjusted, so that they range between 5 and 10 min for the UV‐crosslinking and 5 to 15 min for the heat‐induced crosslinking. UV‐patterning of the surface‐attached polymer networks through chrome contact masks allows generation of microstructures in the micrometer range. We investigate the layer formation process and describe the formation of microstructured surfaces based on these surface‐attached polymer networks. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym.
