A remark on the Debs-Saint-Raymond theorem

A theorem of Debs and Saint-Raymond gives sufficient conditions for a -ideal of compact sets to have the covering property. We discuss the necessity of these conditions. Namely, we show that there exists a -ideal that is locally non-Borel, has no Borel basis and has the covering property. This partially answers a question posed by Kechris.

     

Natural examples of -complete sets in analysis

The purpose of this paper is to show that given any non-negative real number , the set of entire functions whose order is equal to is -complete, and the set of all sequences of entire functions whose orders converge to is -complete.

     

Borel complexity of the space of probability measures

Using a technique developed by Louveau and Saint Raymond, we find the complexity of the space of probability measures in the Borel hierarchy: if is any non-Polish Borel subspace of a Polish space, then , the space of probability Borel measures on with the weak topology, is always true , where is the least ordinal such that is .

     

Spaces of type and the Hankel convolution

In this paper we introduce new function spaces that are denoted by , -1/2$"> and and that are spaces of type where the Hankel convolution and the Hankel transformation are defined. The spaces will play the same role in the Hankel setting that the spaces play in the theory of Fourier transformation.     

Convex curves, Radon transforms and convolution operators defined by singular measures

Depending on the curvature of , this estimate can be improved by introducing mixed-norm estimates of the form where and are conjugate exponents.     

Conditional weak compactness in vector-valued function spaces

Let be an ideal of over a -finite measure space and let be the Köthe dual of with . Let be a real Banach space, and the topological dual of . Let be a subspace of the space of equivalence classes of strongly measurable functions and consisting of all those for which the scalar function belongs to . For a subset of for which the set is -bounded the following statement is equivalent to conditional -compactness: the set is conditionally -compact and is a conditionally weakly compact subset of for each , with . Applications to Orlicz-Bochner spaces are given.

     

-adic -basis and regular local ring

We introduce the concept of -adic -basis as an extension of the concept of -basis. Let be a regular local ring of prime characteristic and a ring such that . Then we prove that is a regular local ring if and only if there exists an -adic -basis of and is Noetherian.

     

A formula for -hyponormality of backstep extensions of subnormal weighted shifts

Let be a weight sequence of positive real numbers and let be a subnormal weighted shift with a weight sequence . Consider an extended weight sequence with and let 0: W_{\alpha (x)} \text{is} k \text{-hyponormal}\}$">for , where is the set of natural numbers. We obtain a formula to find the interval , which provides several examples to distinguish the classes of -hyponormal operators from one another.

     

Minimal sufficiency of order statistics in convex models

Let be a convex and dominated statistical model on the measurable space , with minimal sufficient, and let . Then , the -algebra of all permutation invariant sets belonging to the -fold product -algebra , is shown to be minimal sufficient for the corresponding model for independent observations, .

The main technical tool provided and used is a functional analogue of a theorem of Grzegorek (1982) concerning generators of .

     

Helly-type theorems for homothets of planar convex curves

Helly's theorem implies that if is a finite collection of (positive) homothets of a planar convex body , any three having non-empty intersection, then has non-empty intersection. We show that for collections of homothets (including translates) of the boundary , if any four curves in have non-empty intersection, then has non-empty intersection. We prove the following dual version: If any four points of a finite set in the plane can be covered by a translate [homothet] of , then can be covered by a translate [homothet] of . These results are best possible in general.

     

Stieltjes moment sequences and positive definite matrix sequences

For a certain constant (a little less than ), every function satisfying , , is a Stieltjes indeterminate Stieltjes moment sequence. For every indeterminate moment sequence there is a positive definite matrix sequence which is not of positive type and which satisfies , . For a certain constant (a little greater than ), for every function satisfying , , there is a convolution semigroup of measures on , with moments of all orders, such that , , and for every such convolution semigroup the measure is Stieltjes indeterminate for all .

     

A unified extension of two results of Ky Fan on the sum of matrices

Let be an Hermitian matrix with where are the ordered eigenvalues of . A result of Ky Fan (1949) asserts that if and are Hermitian matrices, then is majorized by . We extend the result in the framework of real semisimple Lie algebras in the following way. Let be a noncompact real semisimple Lie algebra with Cartan decomposition . We show that for any given , , where is the unique element corresponding to , in a fixed closed positive Weyl chamber of a maximal abelian subalgebra of in . Here the ordering is induced by the dual cone of . Fan's result corresponds to the Lie algebra . The compact case is also discussed. As applications, two unexpected singular values inequalities concerning the sum of two real matrices and the sum of two real skew symmetric matrices are obtained.

     

Lightface -indescribable cardinals

-absoluteness for forcing means that for any forcing , . `` inaccessible to reals' means that for any real , . To measure the exact consistency strength of `` -absoluteness for forcing and is inaccessible to reals', we introduce a weak version of a weakly compact cardinal, namely, a (lightface) -indescribable cardinal; has this property exactly if it is inaccessible and .

     

Cofinality changes required for a large set of unapproachable ordinals below

An open question of M. Foreman is whether can be non-stationary in some and preserving extension of . It is shown here that if is such an outer model, then is infinite, for each positive integer .

     

Local derivations of reflexive algebras II

Let be a reflexive algebra in Banach space such that both and in Lat . Then every local derivation of into itself is a derivation.

     

Gaussian estimates and regularized groups

We show that if a bounded analytic semigroup on satisfies a Gaussian estimate of order and is the generator of its consistent semigroup on , then generates a -regularized group on where . We obtain the estimate of () and the -independence of , and give applications to Schrödinger operators and elliptic operators of higher order.

     

The structure of quantum spheres

We show that the C*-algebra of a quantum sphere , 1$">, consists of continuous fields of operators in a C*-algebra , which contains the algebra of compact operators with , such that is a constant function of , where is the quotient map and is the unit circle.

     

Low-dimensional unitary representations of

We characterize all simple unitarizable representations of the braid group on complex vector spaces of dimension . In particular, we prove that if and denote the two generating twists of , then a simple representation (for ) is unitarizable if and only if the eigenvalues of are distinct, satisfy and 0$"> for , where the are functions of the eigenvalues, explicitly described in this paper.

     

Serial subalgebras of finitary Lie algebras

A Lie subalgebra of is said to be finitary if it consists of elements of finite rank. We show that, if acts irreducibly on , and if is infinite-dimensional, then every non-trivial ascendant Lie subalgebra of acts irreducibly on too. When , it follows that the locally solvable radical of such is trivial. In general, locally solvable finitary Lie algebras over fields of characteristic are hyperabelian.
