We used shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS) to systematically study the adsorption of pyridine on low-index Au(hkl) and Pt(hkl) single crystal electrodes. Our gold-core silica-shell nanoparticles (Au@SiO(2) NPs) boost the intensity of Raman scattering from molecules adsorbed on atomically flat surfaces. The average enhancement factor reaches 10(6) for Au(110) and 10(5) for Pt(110), which is comparable to or even greater than that obtained for bare gold NPs (a widely adopted SERS substrate). 3D-FDTD simulations reveal that this large enhancement is due to the transfer of the "hotspots" from NP-NP gaps to NP-surface gaps. We also found that the SHINERS intensity strongly depends on the surface crystallographic orientation, with differences up to a factor of 30. Periodic DFT calculations and theoretical analysis of dielectric functions indicate that this facet-dependence is predominantly governed by the dielectric property of the surface. The results presented in this work may open up new approaches for the characterization of adsorbates and reaction pathways on a wide range of smooth surfaces.

Au-seed Ag-growth nanoparticles of controllable diameter (50-100 nm), and having an ultrathin SiO(2) shell of controllable thickness (2-3 nm), were prepared for shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS). Their morphological, optical, and material properties were characterized; and their potential for use as a versatile Raman signal amplifier was investigated experimentally using pyridine as a probe molecule and theoretically by the three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain (3D-FDTD) method. We show that a SiO(2) shell as thin as 2 nm can be synthesized pinhole-free on the Ag surface of a nanoparticle, which then becomes the core. The dielectric SiO(2) shell serves to isolate the Raman-signal enhancing core and prevent it from interfering with the system under study. The SiO(2) shell also hinders oxidation of the Ag surface and nanoparticle aggregation. It significantly improves the stability and reproducibility of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) signal intensity, which is essential for SERS applications. Our 3D-FDTD simulations show that Ag-core SHINERS nanoparticles yield at least 2 orders of magnitude greater enhancement than Au-core ones when excited with green light on a smooth Ag surface, and thus add to the versatility of our SHINERS method.

Plasmonic superstructures (PS) based on Au/SiO2 were prepared for Shell-Isolated Nanoparticle-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SHINERS) in liquid phase applications. These superstructures are composed of functionalized SiO2 spheres with plasmonic Au nanoparticles (NPs) on their surface. Functionalization was performed with (3-aminopropyl)trimethoxysilane, (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane and poly(ethylene-imine) (PEI). Of these three, PEI-functionalized spheres showed the highest adsorption density of Au NPs in TEM, UV/Vis and dynamic light scattering (DLS) experiments. Upon decreasing the Au NP/SiO2 sphere size ratio, an increase in adsorption density was also observed. To optimize plasmonic activity, 61 nm Au NPs were adsorbed onto 900 nm SiO2-PEI spheres and these PS were coated with an ultrathin layer (1–2 nm) of SiO2 to obtain Shell-Isolated Plasmonic Superstructures (SHIPS), preventing direct contact between Au NPs and the liquid medium. Zeta potential measurements, TEM and SHINERS showed that SiO2 coating was successful. The detection limit for SHINERS using SHIPS and a 638 nm laser was around 10−12 m of Rhodamine (10−15 m for uncoated PS), all with acquisition settings suitable for catalysis applications.

Synthesis methods to prepare lower transition metal catalysts and specifically Ni for Shell-Isolated Nanoparticle-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SHINERS) are explored. Impregnation, colloidal deposition, and spark ablation have been investigated as suitable synthesis routes to prepare SHINERS-active Ni/Au@SiO2 catalyst/Shell-Isolated Nanoparticles (SHINs). Ni precursors are confirmed to be notoriously difficult to reduce and the temperatures required are generally harsh enough to destroy SHINs, rendering SHINERS experiments on Ni infeasible using this approach. For colloidally synthesized Ni nanoparticles deposited on Au@SiO2 SHINs, stabilizing ligands first need to be removed before application is possible in catalysis. The required procedure results in transformation of the metallic Ni core to a fully oxidized metal nanoparticle, again too challenging to reduce at temperatures still compatible with SHINs. Finally, by use of spark ablation we were able to prepare metallic Ni catalysts directly on Au@SiO2 SHINs deposited on a Si wafer. These Ni/Au@SiO2 catalyst/SHINs were subsequently successfully probed with several molecules (i. e. CO and acetylene) of interest for heterogeneous catalysis, and we show that they could be used to study the in situ hydrogenation of acetylene. We observe the interaction of acetylene with the Ni surface. This study further illustrates the true potential of SHINERS by opening the door to studying industrially relevant reactions under in situ or operando reaction conditions.

Since the discovery of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy(SERS), it has been rapidly applied to the in situ study of electrochemical interfaces. Shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy(SHINERS) stands out as one of the most powerful tools for the in situ study of interfacial structures, especially on well-defined single crystal surface. This perspective paper focuses on the study of interfacial structures with the SHINERS technique, including the electronic structure of heterogeneous metal surfaces, and the detection of molecules absorbed on the surface, as well as intermediate species, during electrochemical reactions. Finally, we present an outlook on future research and development of SHINERS for studying interfacial structures.

The investigation of interfacial processes at the molecular level is an essential research area in electrocatalysis. To more clearly understand the electrocatalytic interfacial reaction mechanism, an in situ and highly sensitive surface investigation technique is required. Shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS) is a highly sensitive surface analysis approach that can gather spectral evidence of interfacial intermediates, which commonly have a short lifetime and trace amount that are difficult to be detected. In this review, we first cover the basics of the SHINERS and SHINERS-satellite strategies, including their principle, fabrication method, and features. We then summarized the applications of SHINERS and SHINERS-satellite strategies for the studies of interfacial electrocatalytic process in fuel cells, water electrolysis, and CO oxidation and reduction. Last but not least are the summary and outlook, in which the potential research prospects of SHINERS and SHINERS-satellite are proposed.

Heterogeneous metal interfaces play a key role in determining the mechanism and performance of catalysts. However, in situ characterization of such interfaces at the molecular level is challenging. Herein, two model interfaces, Pd and Pt overlayers on Au single crystals, were constructed. The electronic structures of these interfaces as well as effects of crystallographic orientation on them were analyzed by shell‐isolated nanoparticle‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS) using phenyl isocyanide (PIC) as a probe molecule. A clear red shift in the frequency of the C≡N stretch (νNC) was observed, which is consistent with X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data and indicates that the ultrathin Pt and Pd layers donate their free electrons to the Au substrates. Furthermore, in situ electrochemical SHINERS studies showed that the electronic effects weaken Pt?C/Pd?C bonds, leading to improved surface activity towards CO electrooxidation.

Surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) studies of electrode/solution interfaces are important for understanding electrochemical processes. However, revealing the nature of reactions at well-defined single crystal electrode surfaces, which are SERS-inactive, remains challenging. In this work, shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS) was used for the first time to study electrochemical adsorption and hydrogenation reactions at single crystal surfaces in nonaqueous solvents. A roughened Au surface was also studied for comparison. The experimental results show that the hydrogenation of adsorbed p-ethynylaniline (PEAN) on roughened Au electrode surfaces occurred at very negative potentials in methanol because of the catalytic effect of surface plasmon resonance (SPR). However, because “hot electrons” were blocked by the silica shell of Au@SiO2 nanoparticles and aprotic acetonitrile was an ineffective hydrogen source, surface reactions at Au(111) were inhibited in the systems studied. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the PEAN triple bond opened, allowing adsorption in a flat configuration on the Au(111) surface via two carbon atoms. This work provides an advanced understanding of electrochemical interfacial processes at single crystal surfaces in nonaqueous systems.

It is vital to understand the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) mechanism at the molecular level for the rational design and synthesis of high activity fuel‐cell catalysts. Surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is a powerful technique capable of detecting the bond vibrations of surface species in the low wavenumber range, however, using it to probe practical nanocatalysts remains extremely challenging. Herein, shell‐isolated nanoparticle‐enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS) was used to investigate ORR processes on the surface of bimetallic Pt3Co nanocatalyst structures. Direct spectroscopic evidence of *OOH suggests that ORR undergoes an associative mechanism on Pt3Co in both acidic and basic environments. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the weak *O adsorption arise from electronic effect on the Pt3Co surface accounts for enhanced ORR activity. This work shows SHINERS is a promising technique for the real‐time observation of catalytic processes.

Operando shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS) with on-line mass spectrometry (MS) has been used to investigate the surface species, such as NO, NOH, NO2, N2O, and reaction products of the NO reduction reaction with CO and H2 over supported Rh-based catalysts in the form of catalyst extrudates. By correlating surface intermediates and reaction products, new insights in the reaction mechanism could be obtained. Upon applying different reaction conditions (i. e., H2 or CO), the selectivity of the catalytic reaction could be tuned towards the formation of N2. Furthermore, in the absence of Rh, no reaction products were detected. The importance of the operando SHINERS as a surface-sensitive characterization technique in the field of heterogeneous catalysis provides routes towards a better understanding of catalytic performance.

This study uses the powerful fingerprint features of Raman spectroscopy to distinguish different types of breast tissues including normal breast tissues (NB), fibroadenoma (FD), atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH), ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), and invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC). Thin frozen tissue sections of fresh breast tissues were measured by Raman spectroscopy. Due to the inherent low sensitivity of Raman spectra, Au@SiO2 shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS) technique was utilized to provide supplementary and more informative spectral features. A total of 619 Raman spectra were acquired and compared to 654 SHINERS spectra. The maximum enhancement effect of distinct and specific bands was characterized for different tissue types. When applying the new criteria, excellent separation of FD, DCIS, and IDC was obtained for all tissue types. Most importantly, we were able to distinguish ADH from DCIS. Although only a preliminary distinction was characterized between ADH and NB, the results provided a good foundation of criteria to further discriminate ADH from NB and shed more light toward a better understanding of the mechanism of ADH formation. This is the first report to detect the premalignant (ADH and DCIS) breast tissue frozen sections and also the first report exploiting SHINERS to detect and distinguish breast tissues. The results presented in this study show that SHINERS can be applied to accurately and efficiently identify breast lesions. Further, the spectra can be acquired in a minimally invasive procedure and analyzed rapidly facilitating early and accurate diagnosis in vivo/in situ. Figure

The adsorption and electrooxidation of CO molecules at well-defined Pt(hkl) single-crystal electrode surfaces is a key step towards addressing catalyst poisoning mechanisms in fuel cells. Herein, we employed in situ electrochemical shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS) coupled with theoretical calculation to investigate CO electrooxidation on Pt(hkl) surfaces in acidic solution. We obtained the Raman signal of top- and bridge-site adsorbed CO* molecules on Pt(111) and Pt(100). In contrast, on Pt(110) surfaces only top-site adsorbed CO* was detected during the entire electrooxidation process. Direct spectroscopic evidence for OH* and COOH* species forming on Pt(100) and Pt(111) surfaces was afforded and confirmed subsequently via isotope substitution experiments and DFT calculations. In summary, the formation and adsorption of OH* and COOH* species plays a vital role in expediting the electrooxidation process, which relates with the pre-oxidation peak of CO electrooxidation. This work deepens knowledge of the CO electrooxidation process and provides new perspectives for the design of anti-poisoning and highly effective catalysts.

We have employed in situ electrochemical shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to study the CO reduction reaction (CORR) on Cu single-crystal surfaces under various conditions. Coadsorbed and structure-/potential-dependent surface species, including *CO, Cu−Oad, and Cu−OHad, were identified using electrochemical spectroscopy and isotope labeling. The relative abundance of *OH follows a “volcano” trend with applied potentials in aqueous solutions, which is yet absent in absolute alcoholic solutions. Combined with DFT calculations, we propose that the surface H2O can serve as a strong proton donor for the first protonation step in both the C1 and C2 pathways of CORR at various applied potentials in alkaline electrolytes, leaving adsorbed *OH on the surface. This work provides fresh insights into the initial protonation steps and identity of key interfacial intermediates formed during CORR on Cu surfaces.

We report on a simple and sensitive method for the determination of the total amount of cysteine (Cys) and homocysteine (hCys), [Cys plus hCys], by exploiting the effect of Cys and hCys on the photoluminescence of human serum albumin-stabilized gold-core silver-shell nanocrystals (NCs). If Cys (or hCys) are added to these NCs, Cys (or hCys) will be adsorbed on the surface due to ligand exchange with human serum albumin, and this results in the quenching of the luminescence of the NCs. The addition of mixtures of Cys and hCys in different molar ratios also induces a decrease in luminescence whose intensity is linearly related to the concentration of [Cys plus hCys] in the range from 0.1 – 5.0 μM, with a correlation coefficient (R 2) of 0.9953 and a detection limit of 15 nM. The method is highly selective and sensitive over other α-amino acids, water-soluble thiols, and biomolecules. It has been successfully applied to the determination of the concentration of [Cys plus hCys] in spiked solutions of biomolecules and in real biological samples.
Human serum albumin stabilized gold/silver nanocrystals (HSA-Au/Ag NCs) were prepared and developed towards PL detection of the total amount of cysteine (Cys) and homocysteine (hCys).

We report the first magnetic study of pure and metastable hexagonal close-packed (hcp) Ni nanoparticles (sample 1). We also produced stable face-centered cubic (fcc) Ni nanoparticles, as mixtures with the hcp Ni nanoparticles (samples 2 and 3). We compared the magnetic properties of the hcp Ni nanoparticles with those of the fcc Ni nanoparticles by observing the evolution of magnetic properties from those of the hcp Ni nanoparticles to those of the fcc Ni nanoparticles as the number of fcc Ni nanoparticles increased from sample 1 to sample 3. The blocking temperature (T(B)) of the hcp Ni nanoparticles is approximately 12 K for particle diameters ranging between 8.5 and 18 nm, whereas those of the fcc Ni nanoparticles are 250 and 270 K for average particle diameters of 18 and 26 nm, respectively. The hcp Ni nanoparticles seem to be antiferromagnetic for T < T(B) and paramagnetic for T > T(B). This is very different from the fcc Ni nanoparticles, which are ferromagnetic for T < T(B) and superparamagnetic for T > T(B). This unusual magnetic state of the metastable hcp Ni nanoparticles is likely related to their increased bond distance (2.665 angstroms), compared to that (2.499 angstroms) of the stable fcc Ni nanoparticles.

We produced, for the first time, monodisperse NiH(x) nanoparticles with particle diameters of 7.0 nm and investigated their magnetic properties. We also produced monodisperse Ni nanoparticles with nearly the same particle diameters as those of NiH(x) nanoparticles as a comparison. The magnetic properties of NiH(x) nanoparticles were quite different from those of Ni nanoparticles. We observed two compositional phases in NiH(x) nanoparticles, similar to bulk material: one is the nearly pure Ni phase with the blocking temperature (T(B)) of 11 K and the other is the hydride phase. We observed T(B) of 40 K in Ni nanoparticles.
