Nanocomposite films consisting of cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs), magnesium hydroxide nanoplatelets (MHNPs) and regenerated cellulose were prepared via simple blending and casting processes. The CNFs were obtained from bamboo pulp by ultrasonic treatment coupled with high shear homogenization. The morphology, structure and properties of the nanocomposite films were comprehensively analyzed using various characterization techniques, including the scanning electron microscope, digital microscope, limiting oxygen index (LOI), micro-scale combustion calorimetry, antibacterial assays, tensile testing, etc. When the MHNP content was optimized to 30 wt%, the nanocomposite film exhibited the best overall properties. The LOI of the composite film increased from 20.0 (0 wt% MHNPs) to 32.7 (30 wt% MHNPs), making it a flame-retardant material in air. In addition, the film containing 30 wt% MHNPs showed excellent antibacterial activity. However, the increase in MHNP content would result in gradual deterioration of the films’ mechanical properties. However, the incorporation of CNFs could significantly suppress this trend. The present work provided a promising pathway for manufacturing multifunctional and high-performance cellulose-based composite films, which were potentially useful for a variety of packaging materials, especially in the biomedical and food packaging fields.  相似文献

Thin nanocomposite films of thermoplastic starch, chitosan and cellulose nanofibers (bacterial cellulose or nanofibrillated cellulose) were prepared for the first time by solvent casting of water based suspensions of the three polysaccharides. The role of the different bioploymers on the final properties (thermal stability, transparency, mechanical performance and antimicrobial activity) of the films was related with their intrinsic features, contents and synergic effects resulting from the establishment of interactions between them. Thermoplastic starch displays an important role on the thermal stability of the films because it is the most stable polysaccharide; however it has a negative impact on the mechanical performance and transparency of the films. The addition of chitosan improves considerably the transparency (up to 50 % transmittance for 50 % of chitosan, in respect to the amount of starch), mechanical performance and antimicrobial properties (at least 25 % of chitosan and no more than 10 % of cellulose nanofibers are required to observe bacteriostatic or bactericidal activity) but decrease their thermal stability. The incorporation of cellulose nanofibers had the strongest positive impact on the mechanical properties of the materials (increments of up to 15 and 30 MPa on the Young′s modulus and Tensile strength, respectively, for films with 20 % of BC or NFC). Nonetheless, the impact in thermal stability and mechanical performance of the films, promoted by the addition of chitosan and cellulose nanofibres, respectively, was higher than the expected considering their percentage contents certainly because of the establishment of strong and complex interactions between the three polysaccharides.  相似文献

The preparation of carboxymethylated microfibrillated cellulose (MFC) films by dispersion-casting from aqueous dispersions and by surface coating on base papers is described. The oxygen permeability of MFC films were studied at different relative humidity (RH). At low RH (0%), the MFC films showed very low oxygen permeability as compared with films prepared from plasticized starch, whey protein and arabinoxylan and values in the same range as that of conventional synthetic films, e.g., ethylene vinyl alcohol. At higher RH’s, the oxygen permeability increased exponentially, presumably due to the plasticizing and swelling of the carboxymethylated nanofibers by water molecules. The effect of moisture on the barrier and mechanical properties of the films was further studied using water vapor sorption isotherms and by humidity scans in dynamic mechanical analysis. The influences of the degree of nanofibrillation/dispersion on the microstructure and optical properties of the films were evaluated by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and light transmittance measurements, respectively. FE-SEM micrographs showed that the MFC films consisted of randomly assembled nanofibers with a thickness of 5–10 nm, although some larger aggregates were also formed. The use of MFC as surface coating on various base papers considerably reduced the air permeability. Environmental scanning electron microscopy (E-SEM) micrographs indicated that the MFC layer reduced sheet porosity, i.e., the dense structure formed by the nanofibers resulted in superior oil barrier properties.  相似文献

Corn starch (CS) and soy protein isolate (SPI), as inexpensive, abundant, and biodegradable materials, can chemically interact well with each other to produce biofilms. However, to overcome some of their physical and mechanical limitations, it is preferred to use their composite form, employing reinforcing materials. In this study, initially, graphene (G) and graphene oxide (GO) were synthesized by a green method. Then, to enhance the polymer blend final properties, the effects of adding G and GO in the range of 0.5 to 2 wt% on physical and mechanical properties of starch/protein blend were investigated. The results showed that the presence of 0.5‐wt% G and 2‐wt% GO significantly increased the modulus of starch/protein film from 252 to 578 and 449 MPa, respectively. In addition, the thermal stability of CS/SPI/GO (2 wt%) composite film was 50°C to 60°C more than that of the pure starch/protein film. On the other hand, G‐reinforced composite films tended to decline water diffusion compared with the pure polymer film. In addition, the composite film with 2‐wt% GO content had the lowest oxygen permeation rate (3.48 cm3 μm/m2d kpa) among the other composite films.  相似文献

The gas barrier and mechanical properties are crucial parameters for packaging materials, and they are highly correlated to the molecular interactions in the polymer matrix. To improve these properties of TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibers (TOCNs) composite films, we studied the effect using hydroxypropyl guar (HPG) or carboxymethyl guar (CMG) in the preparation of TOCN composite films, which were made by following the solution-casting method. The subsequent film characterizations were carried out by UV–Vis spectra, scanning electron microscopy, oxygen and water vapor permeability measurements, tensile and thermogravimetric analyses. SEM results showed that CMG-based films had denser structures than their HPG counterparts. Moreover, the improved hydrogen bonding of the CMG-based films was partially responsible for the improved gas barrier performance, tensile strength and thermal stability. These results support the conclusion that CMG had advantages over HPG when used in the preparation of TOCNs packaging composite films.  相似文献

Polylactic acid (PLA) nanocomposites were prepared using cellulose nanowhiskers (CNW) as a reinforcing element in order to asses the value of this filler to reduce the gas and vapour permeability of the biopolyester matrix. The nanocomposites were prepared by incorporating 1, 2, 3 and 5 wt% of the CNW into the PLA matrix by a chloroform solution casting method. The morphology, thermal and mechanical behaviour and permeability of the films were investigated. The CNW prepared by acid hydrolysis of highly purified alpha cellulose microfibers, resulted in nanofibers of 60–160 nm in length and of 10–20 nm in thickness. The results indicated that the nanofiller was well dispersed in the PLA matrix, did not impair the thermal stability of this but induced the formation of some crystallinity, most likely transcrystallinity. CNW prepared by freeze drying exhibited in the nanocomposites better morphology and properties than their solvent exchanged counterparts. Interestingly, the water permeability of nanocomposites of PLA decreased with the addition of CNW prepared by freeze drying by up to 82% and the oxygen permeability by up to 90%. Optimum barrier enhancement was found for composites containing loadings of CNW below 3 wt%. Typical modelling of barrier and mechanical properties failed to describe the behaviour of the composites and appropriate discussion regarding this aspect was also carried out. From the results, CNW exhibit novel significant potential in coatings, membranes and food agrobased packaging applications.  相似文献

We study the effect of oxidative impurities on the properties of graphene oxide and on the graphene oxide Langmuir–Blodgett films (LB). The starting material was grupo Antolín nanofibers (GANF) and the oxidation process was a modified Hummers method to obtain highly oxidized graphene oxide. The purification procedure reported in this work eliminated oxidative impurities decreasing the thickness of the nanoplatelets. The purified material thus obtained presents an oxidation degree similar to that achieved by chemical reduction of the graphite oxide. The purified and non‐purified graphene oxides were deposited onto silicon by means of a Langmuir–Blodgett (LB) methodology. The morphology of the LB films was analyzed by field emission scanning microscopy (FE‐SEM) and micro‐Raman spectroscopy. Our results show that the LB films built by transferring Langmuir monolayers at the liquid‐expanded state of the purified material are constituted by close‐packed and non‐overlapped nanoplatelets. The isotherms of the Langmuir monolayer precursor of the LB films were interpreted according to the Volmer’s model.  相似文献

Chitosan (1 wt%, in 2% aqueous acetic acid solution) and starch (1 wt%, in deionised water) were dissolved and mixed in different proportions (20–80 wt% chitosan) then films were prepared by casting. Tensile strength and elongation at break of the 50% chitosan containing starch-based films were found to be 47 MPa and 16%, respectively. It was revealed that with the increase of chitosan in starch, the values of TS improved significantly. Monomer, 2-butane diol-diacrylate (BDDA) was added into the film forming solutions (50% starch-based), then casted films. The BDDA containing films were irradiated under gamma radiation (5–25 kGy) and it was found that strength of the films improved significantly. On the other hand, synthetic petroleum-based polymeric films (polycaprolactone, polyethylene and polypropylene) were prepared by compression moulding. Mechanical and barrier properties of the films were evaluated. The gamma irradiated (25 kGy) films showed higher strength and better barrier properties.  相似文献

The optimization of the production of thermoplastic starch (TPS) bionanocomposite films for their potential application in food packaging was carried out, according to the Box–Wilson Central Composite Design (CCD) with one center point, using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and fillers based on lignin and nanofiber, which were derived from bamboo plant. The effects of the fillers on the moisture absorption (MAB), tensile strength (TS), percent elongation (PE) and Young’s modulus (YM) of the produced films were statistically examined. The obtained results showed that the nanocomposite films were best fitted by a quadratic regression model with a high coefficient of determination (R2) value. The film identified to be optimum has a desirability of 76.80%, which is close to the objective function, and contained 4.81 wt. % lignin and 5.00 wt. % nanofiber. The MAB, TS, YM and PE of the identified film were 17.80%, 21.51 MPa, 25.76 MPa and 48.81%, respectively. The addition of lignin and cellulose nanofiber to starch composite was found to have reduced the moisture-absorption tendency significantly and increased the mechanical properties of the films due to the good filler/matrix interfacial adhesion. Overall, the results suggested that the produced films would be suitable for application as packaging materials for food preservation.  相似文献

In the present work, graphene oxide (GO) and reduced graphene oxide (RGO) were incorporated at low‐density polyethylene (LDPE)/ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) copolymer blend using solution casting method. Monolayer GO with 1‐nm thickness and good transparency was synthesized using the well‐known Hummers's method. Fourier transform infrared and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy data exhibited efficient reduction of GO with almost high C/O ratio of RGO. Scanning electron microscopy showed the well distribution of GO and RGO within LDPE/EVA polymer matrix. The integrating effects of GO and RGO on mechanical and gas permeability of prepared films were examined. Young's modulus of nanocomposites are improved 65% and 92% by adding 7 wt% of GO and RGO, respectively. The tensile measurements showed that maximum tensile strength emerged in 3 wt% of loading for RGO and 5 wt% for GO. The measured oxygen and carbon dioxide permeability represented noticeably the attenuation of gas permeability in composite films compared with pristine LDPE/EVA blend. With the goals of reducing negative environmental impacts and improving the novel food packaging industry, edible films composed of Chinese yam mucilage (DOM) and starch were prepared via a casting method. The films were characterized by analysing the physical, morphological, mechanical and barrier properties, performing a thermal analysis, and finally performing an acute toxicity analysis in rats that ingested the film-forming solutions. Four film samples (F1, F2, F3 and F4) were prepared to evaluate the effects of ultrasound and the addition of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) on DOM. DOM films presented a compact and uniform structure without toxicological responses, and the optimal DOM film-forming solution contained 20.0% mucilage, 10.0% starch, 1.0% glycerol, and 2.0% CMC after a 1 h ultrasound treatment. The solubility, swelling degree and water vapour permeability (WVP) of DOM film were 41.11%, 95.03% and 55.30 g mm/m2·d·kPa, respectively. The functional groups analysed by FT-IR and thermal degradation were not affected by the different formulations. Therefore, the non-toxic and bio-degradable films prepared using DOM have the great potential to be used in applications in food packaging.  相似文献

There have been many studies on the development biodegradable films using starch isolated from various food sources as a substitute for synthetic plastic packaging films. In this study, starch was extracted from ginkgo (Ginkgo biloba) nuts, which were mainly discarded and considered an environment hazard. The prepared starch (GBS) was then used for the preparation of antioxidant films by incorporating various amounts of cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) essential oil (CZEO), which provides antioxidant activity. The prepared GBS films with CZEO were characterized by measuring physical, optical, and thermal properties, along with antioxidant activity (ABTS, DPPH, and FRAP) measurements. With the increasing amount of CZEO, the flexibility and antioxidant activities of the GBS films increased proportionally, whereas the tensile strength of the films decreased. The added CZEO also increased the water vapor permeability of the GBS films, and the microstructure of the GBS films was homogeneous overall. Therefore, the obtained results indicate that the developed GBS films containing CZEO are applicable as antioxidant food packaging.  相似文献

The novel polymer composite of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyol(PO) and graphene oxide (GO) was used to prepare the PVA/PO and GO/PVA/PO with different weight percents of GO (0.5 and 1% denoted as (0.5 wt%)GO/PVA/PO and (1 wt%)GO/PVA/PO, respectively) through solution casting blend technique. The structure–properties of all used films were confirmed by scanning electron microscope (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and mechanical properties. The SEM results exhibited the uniform and homogeneous dispersion of GO in the PVA/PO blend matrix. The TEM and XRD analysis confirmed the structure and exfoliation of GO nanosheets, respectively. Thermal stability suggested that (0.5 wt%)GO/PVA/PO and (1 wt%) GO/PVA/PO films are more stable than PVA/PO. The tensile strength of (0.5 wt%)GO/PVA/PO and (1 wt%)GO/PVA/PO films reached 270.5% and 1349.6%, respectively, which are higher than that of the PVA/PO film. The decrease in the water absorption (WA) of GO/PVA/PO was found from 110.5 to 38.4%. The physico-mechanical properties of used films suggested that the prepared GO/PVA/PO blend composite films can be applied in food packaging areas.  相似文献

This paper reports on the results of using unbleached sugar cane bagasse nanofibres (average diameter 26.5 nm; aspect ratio 247 assuming a dry fibre density of 1,500 kg/m3) to improve the physico-chemical properties of starch-based films. The addition of bagasse nanofibres (2.5 to 20 wt%) to modified potato starch (i.e. soluble starch) reduced the moisture uptake by up to 17 % at 58 % relative humidity. The film’s tensile strength and Young’s modulus increased by up to 100 % (3.1 to 6.2 MPa) and 300 % (66.3 to 198.3 MPa) respectively with 10 and 20 wt% fibre addition. However, the strain at yield dropped by 50 % for the film containing 10 wt% fibre. Models for composite materials were used to account for the strong interactions between the nanofibres and the starch matrix. The storage and loss moduli as well as the glass transition temperature (Tg) obtained from dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, were increased with the starch-nanofibre films indicating decreased starch chain mobility due to the interacting effect of the nanofibres. Evidence of the existence of strong interactions between the starch matrix and the nanofibres was revealed from detailed Fourier transform infra-red and scanning electron microscopic evaluation.  相似文献

A series of novel polyethyleneimine (PEI) modified graphene oxide (PEI-mGO) filled poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanocomposite (PEI-mGO/PVA) films were prepared by solution-casing for hydrogen gas barrier applications. Hydrophilic PEI was used to simultaneously reduce and modify graphene oxide sheets, thereby facilitating a homogeneous dispersion of PEI-mGO in the PVA matrix. The effects of PEI-mGO on the morphology and properties of the nanocomposite films were examined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and field emission scanning electron microscopy. Analogous GO/PVA composites were also prepared and characterized for comparative purposes. The PEI-mGO/PVA nanocomposites showed higher thermal and mechanical stability as well as remarkable improvement in hydrogen gas barrier properties compared to the PVA film; specifically, the PEI-mGO/PVA film having 3.0 wt% of PEI-mGO content exhibited almost 95% decrease in GTR and permeability values compared to PVA film.  相似文献

The indiscriminate use of plastic in food packaging contributes significantly to environmental pollution, promoting the search for more eco-friendly alternatives for the food industry. This work studied five formulations (T1–T5) of biodegradable cassava starch/gelatin films. The results showed the presence of the starch/gelatin functional groups by FT-IR spectroscopy. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed a thermal reinforcement after increasing the amount of gelatin in the formulations, which increased the crystallization temperature (Tc) from 190 °C for the starch-only film (T1) to 206 °C for the film with 50/50 starch/gelatin (T3). It also exhibited a homogeneous surface morphology, as evidenced by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). However, an excess of gelatin showed low compatibility with starch in the 25/75 starch/gelatin film (T4), evidenced by the low Tc definition and very rough and fractured surface morphology. Increasing gelatin ratio also significantly increased the strain (from 2.9 ± 0.5% for T1 to 285.1 ± 10.0% for T5) while decreasing the tensile strength (from 14.6 ± 0.5 MPa for T1 to 1.5 ± 0.3 MPa for T5). Water vapor permeability (WVP) increased, and water solubility (WS) also decreased with gelatin mass rising in the composites. On the other hand, opacity did not vary significantly due to the films’ cassava starch and gelatin ratio. Finally, optimizing the mechanical and water barrier properties resulted in a mass ratio of 53/47 cassava starch/gelatin as the most appropriate for their application in food packaging, indicating their usefulness in the food-packaging industry.  相似文献

Highly flexible nanocomposite films of nanocrystalline cellulose acetate (NCCA) and graphene oxide (GO) were synthesized by combining NCCA and GO sheets in a well-controlled manner. By adjusting the GO content, various NCCA/GO nanocomposites with 0.3–1 wt% GO were obtained. Films of these nanocomposites were prepared using the solvent casting method. Microscopic and X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements demonstrated that the GO nanosheets were uniformly dispersed in the NCCA matrix. Mechanical properties of the composite films were also studied. The best GO composition of the samples tested was 0.8 wt%, giving tensile strength of 157.49 MPa, which represents a 61.92 % enhancement compared with NCCA. On the other hand, the composite films showed improved barrier properties against water vapor. This simple process for preparation of NCCA/GO films is attractive for potential development of high-performance films for electrical and electrochemical applications.  相似文献

To reveal the enhancement effect of graphene oxide (GO) in polymer nanofiber yarns, polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/GO nanofibers with different GO content (0.1‐0.5 wt%) were electrospun. The alignment of PAN chains and GO in nanofibers was enhanced by hot stretching of the yarn in dry conditions. The microstructure of the composite nanofiber yarns was investigated through X‐ray diffraction, polarized Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The results demonstrated that the hot stretching above Tg of PAN precursor lead to the increased orientation‐induced crystallization and alignment of PAN chain and GO. The yarn with 0.1 wt% GO and stretched by 4 times its length obtained the highest strength and modules (310.88 ± 24.68 MPa and 7.24 ± 0.55 GPa), which were 600% and 500% higher than those of the as‐electrospun pure PAN yarn. The most promising tensile properties found in hot stretched yarns with low GO content was because the strong interaction occurred between PAN molecules and oxygen‐containing functional groups. Indirect evidence of GO aggregation was also presented, which adversely affected the mechanical properties at higher GO content. Composite nanofiber yarns were sewable and weavable, and could be used as a new generation of composite reinforcement after pyrolysis.  相似文献

The purpose of the bark biorefinery concept is to upgrade the different constituents present in bark to multiple value-added bio-based products. Non-cellulosic polysaccharides (NCP) and cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) sequentially isolated from the inner bark of Norway spruce were used as raw materials for the formulation of renewable nanocomposites. The film formation abilities of NCP/CNC formulations prepared with different proportions of CNC were studied. Homogeneous transparent films with a glossy appearance were obtained when more than 30 wt% CNC was incorporated. The influence of the CNC content on the NCP/CNC films was assessed in terms of structural, thermal, mechanical and oxygen-barrier properties. All the films showed better performances with increasing CNC content, which was explained by the strong interactions between the two components. The effect on the film performances of adding sorbitol as a plasticizer was also evaluated. The presence of sorbitol decreased the thermal stability, the stiffness and the oxygen permeability of the films at 80 % RH. However, the addition of sorbitol enhanced the elongation of the films and further improved their oxygen-barrier properties at 50 % RH. The composite properties could thus be tailored by adding different amounts of sorbitol and CNC, resulting in all-carbohydrate materials with performances similar to or even better than the conventional barrier materials used in packaging.  相似文献
