Inner hair cell responses to sound were monitored while direct current was applied across the membranous labyrinth in the first turn of the guinea pig cochlea. The current injection electrodes were positioned in the scala vestibuli and on the round window membrane. Positive and negative current (less than 100 microA) caused changes in the sound-evoked dc receptor potentials which were dependent on the sound frequency and intensity. The frequencies most affected by this extracellular current were those comprising the "tip" portion of the inner hair cell frequency tuning characteristic (FTC). The influence of current increased with increasing frequency. Positive current increased the amount of dc receptor potential for the affected frequencies while negative current decreased the potential. Current-induced changes (on a percentage basis) were greater for low intensity sounds and the negative current direction. These frequency specific changes are evidenced as a loss in sensitivity for the tip area of the FTC and a downward shift of the inner hair cell characteristic frequency. Larger current levels (greater than 160 microA) cause more complex changes including unrecoverable loss of cell performance. In separate experiments positive and negative currents (less than 1.1 microA) were injected into the inner hair cell from the recording electrode during simultaneous measurement of the sound-evoked dc receptor potential. This condition caused a shift in IHC sensitivity that was independent of sound frequency and intensity. Positive current decreased the sensitivity of the level of the cell while negative current increased the responses. The effect of current level on sound-evoked dc receptor potential was nonlinear, as comparatively greater increases in cell response were observed for negative than decreases for positive current. The intracellular current injection results are accounted for by the mechano-resistive model of hair cell transduction, where nonlinear responses with current level may reflect outward rectification. Response changes induced by extracellular current are evidence of current effects on both inner and outer hair cells. The frequency and intensity dependences are hypothesized to represent voltage mediated control of inner hair cell response by the outer hair cells.  相似文献

The predictions of a rate coding model for frequency and amplitude jnd's in the presence of noise are presented for a 1-kHz, 100-ms tone. The model for the neural response incorporates physiological data on dynamic range distribution and rate suppression. A central processor is assumed to estimate the tone frequency, or amplitude, from the tone-evoked rate increment profile. This central processor acts like an ideal detector with respect to the neural noise. The effects of the neural noise as well as the signal variability on the discrimination performance level are evaluated, and the signal variability is found to be significant. The combined effect of threshold distribution, rate suppression, and signal variability make the jnd's practically invariant with noise level, in accordance with published psychophysical data. The values of the frequency jnd at high signal-to-noise ratio, however, are borderline in their consistency with the data. A more obvious discrepancy exists between the model and the psychophysical data regarding the ratio of frequency to amplitude Weber fractions, which can be resolved only by modifying the model auditory filters to be five times sharper than those measured in cats.  相似文献

Otoacoustic emissions are typically reduced in amplitude when broadband noise is presented to the contralateral ear. This contralateral suppression is attributed to activation of the medial olivocochlear system, which has an inhibitory effect on outer hair-cell activity. By studying the effects of contralateral noise on cochlear output at different stages of auditory maturation in human neonates, it is possible to describe the timecourse for development of medial efferent system function in humans. The present study recorded 2 f1-f2 distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) in human adults, term and premature neonates at three f2 frequencies: 1500, 3000, and 6000 Hz, using fixed primary tone frequency ratio (f2/f1 = 1.2) and level separation (10 dB, L1 > L2). Average DPOAE growth functions were recorded with and without contralateral broadband noise. Results indicate that contralateral suppression of DPOAEs is absent at 6000 Hz, but present at 1500 and 3000 Hz for all ages. However, DPOAE amplitude from premature neonates was not altered by noise in an adult-like manner; in this age group, DPOAE amplitude was equally likely to by suppressed or enhanced by noise presented contralaterally. Contralateral enhancement may reflect a temporary stage of immaturity in outer hair cell-medial efferent fiber synapses just prior to term birth.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to determine how closely the auditory brainstem response (ABR) can estimate sensorineural threshold shifts in rats exposed to loud sound. Behavioral and ABR thresholds were obtained for tones or noise before and after exposure to loud sound. The results showed that the ABR threshold shift obtained with tone pips estimated the initial pure-tone threshold shifts to within +/-5 dB 11% of the time and the permanent pure-tone threshold shifts 55% of the time, both with large errors. Determining behavioral thresholds for the same tone pips used for the ABR did not improve the agreement between the measures. In contrast, the ABR obtained with octave noise estimated the initial threshold shifts for that noise to within +/-5 dB 25% of the time and the permanent threshold shifts 89% of the time, with much smaller errors. Thus, it appears that the noise-evoked ABR is more accurate in estimating threshold shift than the tone-evoked ABR.  相似文献

Seventeen groups of chinchillas with 11 to 16 animals/group (sigmaN = 207) were exposed for 5 days to either a Gaussian (G) noise or 1 of 16 different non-Gaussian (non-G) noises at 100 dB(A) SPL. All exposures had the same total energy and approximately the same flat spectrum but their statistical properties were varied to yield a series of exposure conditions that varied across a continuum from G through various non-G conditions to pure impact noise exposures. The non-G character of the noise was produced by inserting high level transients (impacts or noise bursts) into the otherwise G noise. The peak SPL of the transients, their bandwidth, and the intertransient intervals were varied, as was the rms level of the G noise. The statistical metric, kurtosis (beta), computed on the unfiltered noise beta(t), was varied 3 < or = beta(t) < or = 105. Brainstem auditory evoked responses were used to estimate hearing thresholds and surface preparation histology was used to determine sensory cell loss. Trauma, as measured by asymptotic and permanent threshold shifts (ATS, PTS) and by sensory cell loss, was greater for all of the non-G exposure conditions. Permanent effects of the exposures increased as beta(t) increased and reached an asymptote at beta(t) approximately 40. For beta(t) > 40 varying the interval or peak histograms did not alter the level of trauma, suggesting that, in the chinchilla model, for beta(t) > 40 an energy metric may be effective in evaluating the potential of non-G noise environments to produce hearing loss. Reducing the probability of a transient occurring could reduce the permanent effects of the non-G exposures. These results lend support to those standards documents that use an energy metric for gauging the hazard of exposure but only after applying a "correction factor" when high level transients are present. Computing beta on the filtered noise signal [beta(f)] provides a frequency specific metric for the non-G noises that is correlated with the additional frequency specific outer hair cell loss produced by the non-G noise. The data from the abundant and varied exposure conditions show that the kurtosis of the amplitude distribution of a noise environment is an important variable in determining the hazards to hearing posed by non-Gaussian noise environments.  相似文献

The mechanical waveform of the basilar membrane. IV. Tone and noise stimuli   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Analysis of mechanical cochlear responses to wide bands of random noise clarifies many effects of cochlear nonlinearity. The previous paper [de Boer and Nuttall, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 107, 1497-1507 (2000)] illustrates how closely results of computations in a nonlinear cochlear model agree with responses from physiological experiments. In the present paper results for tone stimuli are reported. It was found that the measured frequency response for pure tones differs little from the frequency response associated with a noise signal. For strong stimuli, well into the nonlinear region, tones have to be presented at a specific level with respect to the noise for this to be true. In this report the nonlinear cochlear model originally developed for noise analysis was modified to accommodate pure tones. For this purpose the efficiency with which outer hair cells modify the basilar-membrane response was made into a function of cochlear location based on local excitation. For each experiment, the modified model is able to account for the experimental findings, within 1 or 2 dB. Therefore, the model explains why the type of filtering that tones undergo in the cochlea is essentially the same as that for noise signals (provided the tones are presented at the appropriate level).  相似文献

Marine petroleum exploration involves the repetitive use of high-energy noise sources, air-guns, that produce a short, sharp, low-frequency sound. Despite reports of behavioral responses of fishes and marine mammals to such noise, it is not known whether exposure to air-guns has the potential to damage the ears of aquatic vertebrates. It is shown here that the ears of fish exposed to an operating air-gun sustained extensive damage to their sensory epithelia that was apparent as ablated hair cells. The damage was regionally severe, with no evidence of repair or replacement of damaged sensory cells up to 58 days after air-gun exposure.  相似文献

Ac and dc receptor potential components in response to tone-burst stimuli were measured from inner hair cells in the third cochlear turn of the guinea pig. Comparisons were sought between conditions when constant polarizing current was injected into the cell through the recording electrode and when there was no extrinsic current. Hyperpolarization of the cell increased all responses, while depolarization decreased them. The input-output functions were vertically translated by current injection. The extent of translation was a function of current level. In addition, the amount of current-induced change was frequency dependent. Largest changes were seen at low frequencies and the current-induced change tended toward a constant high-frequency asymptote between 1-2 kHz. Changes in the dc response component were considerably in excess of those for the fundamental ac response. The frequency-dependent effects are quantified with the aid of a hair cell circuit model [P. Dallos, Hear. Res. 14, 281-291 (1984)]. It is assumed that the quantity altered by polarizing current (actually by the transmembrane voltage) is the resistance of the cell's basolateral membrane.  相似文献

An extensive physiological literature, including experimental and clinical studies in humans, demonstrates that activation of the medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent system, by either contralateral sound or electrical stimulation, can produce significant alterations in cochlear function and suggests a role for the MOC system in influencing the auditory behavior of binaural hearing. The present data are from psychophysical studies in nonhuman primates which seek to determine if the noted physiological changes in response to contralateral acoustic stimulation have a perceptual counterpart. Four juvenile Japanese macaques were trained to respond to the presence of 1-s sinusoids, presented to the test ear, in an operant reinforcement paradigm. Thresholds were compared for frequencies ranging from 1.0 to 4.0 kHz in quiet, with thresholds measured when continuous, two octave-band noise, centered on the test tone frequency, was presented in the contralateral ear. Contralateral noise was presented at levels of 10-60 dB above detection threshold for the test-tone frequency. While some variability was evident across subjects, both in the frequency distribution and magnitude (as a function of contralateral noise level), all subjects exhibited an increase, or suppression of thresholds in the presence of contralateral noise. On average, thresholds increased systematically with contralateral noise level, to a peak of 7 dB. In one subject, the threshold increase seen with contralateral noise was significantly reduced when the MOC was surgically sectioned on the floor of the IVth ventricle. The characteristics of the measured shifts in behavioral thresholds, in the presence of contralateral noise reported here, are qualitatively and quantitatively similar to both efferent physiological suppression effects and psychophysical central masking threshold shifts which have been reported previously. These data suggest that at least some aspects of "central masking" are efferent-mediated peripheral processes, and that the term "central masking" may be incorrect.  相似文献

Intracellular recordings were made from inner hair cells and basilar membrane motion was measured at a similar place, but in different preparations, in the first turn of the guinea pig cochlea. Potential recordings were made using glass microelectrodes and mechanical measurements were made using the M?ssbauer technique. Intensity functions of DC receptor potential and basilar membrane velocity in animals with good and poor thresholds are presented. In animals with good thresholds, stimuli at and above the characteristic frequency produce similarly compressive input-output functions for both inner hair cell receptor potentials and basilar membrane motion. However, for frequencies lower than the characteristic frequency, receptor potential input-output functions obtained from animals in good and poor condition show saturation at high stimulus intensities at which basilar membrane motion is linear. This discrepancy is believed to be due to a nonlinear inner hair cell transduction mechanism. We propose that nonlinearity observed in receptor potential input-output functions is a consequence of the simple cascading of a frequency-dependent nonlinear mechanical input and a frequency-independent nonlinear transduction process.  相似文献

The forward-masking properties of inharmonic complex stimuli were measured both for normal and hearing-impaired subjects. The signal threshold for a 1000-Hz pure-tone probe was obtained for six different maskers, which varied in the number of pure-tone components. The masking stimuli consisted of 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, or 11 components, logarithmically spaced in frequency surrounding the signal and presented at a fixed level of 80 dB SPL per component. In most normal-hearing subjects, the threshold for the probe decreased as the number of masking components was increased, demonstrating that stimuli with more components tended to be less effective maskers. Results from hearing-impaired subjects showed no decrease in threshold with increasing number of masking components. Instead, the thresholds increased as more components were added to the first masker. These results appear to be consistent with suppression effects within the multicomponent maskers for the normal subjects and a lack of suppression effects for the hearing-impaired subjects. The results from the normal-hearing subjects are also consistent with "across-channel" cuing.  相似文献

This experiment assessed the benefits of suppression and the impact of reduced or absent suppression on speech recognition in noise. Psychophysical suppression was measured in forward masking using tonal maskers and suppressors and band limited noise maskers and suppressors. Subjects were 10 younger and 10 older adults with normal hearing, and 10 older adults with cochlear hearing loss. For younger subjects with normal hearing, suppression measured with noise maskers increased with masker level and was larger at 2.0 kHz than at 0.8 kHz. Less suppression was observed for older than younger subjects with normal hearing. There was little evidence of suppression for older subjects with cochlear hearing loss. Suppression measured with noise maskers and suppressors was larger in magnitude and more prevalent than suppression measured with tonal maskers and suppressors. The benefit of suppression to speech recognition in noise was assessed by obtaining scores for filtered consonant-vowel syllables as a function of the bandwidth of a forward masker. Speech-recognition scores in forward maskers should be higher than those in simultaneous maskers given that forward maskers are less effective than simultaneous maskers. If suppression also mitigated the effects of the forward masker and resulted in an improved signal-to-noise ratio, scores should decrease less in forward masking as forward-masker bandwidth increased, and differences between scores in forward and simultaneous maskers should increase, as was observed for younger subjects with normal hearing. Less or no benefit of suppression to speech recognition in noise was observed for older subjects with normal hearing or hearing loss. In general, as suppression measured with tonal signals increased, the combined benefit of forward masking and suppression to speech recognition in noise also increased.  相似文献

The effects of forward and backward noise fringes on binaural signal detectability were investigated. Masked thresholds for a 12-ms, 250-Hz, sinusoidal signal masked by Gaussian noise, centered at 250 Hz, with bandwidths from 3 to 201 Hz, were obtained in N(0)S(0) and N(0)S(π) configurations. The signal was (a) temporally centered in a 12-ms noise burst (no fringe), (b) presented at the start of a 600-ms noise burst (backward fringe), or (c) temporally centered in a 600-ms noise burst (forward-plus-backward fringe). For noise bandwidths between 3 and 75 Hz, detection in N(0)S(0) improved with the addition of a backward fringe, improving further with an additional forward fringe; there was little improvement in N(0)S(π). The binaural masking-level difference (BMLD) increased from 0 to 8 dB with a forward-plus-backward fringe as noise bandwidths increased to 100 Hz, increasing slightly to 10 dB at 201 Hz. This two-stage increase was less pronounced with a backward fringe. With no fringe, the BMLD was about 10-14 dB at all bandwidths. Performance appears to result from the interaction of across-time and across-frequency listening strategies and the possible effects of gain reduction and suppression, which combine in complex ways. Current binaural models are, as yet, unable to account fully for these effects.  相似文献

Mechanical responses in the basal turn of the guinea-pig cochlea were measured with broad-band noise stimuli and expressed as input-output cross-correlation functions. The experiments were performed over the full range of stimulus intensities in order to try to understand the influence of cochlear nonlinearity on frequency selectivity, tuning, signal compression and the impulse response. The results are interpreted within the framework of a nonlinear, locally active, three-dimensional model of the cochlea. The data have been subjected to inverse analysis in order to recover the basilar-membrane (BM) impedance, a parameter function that, when inserted into the (linearized version of that) model, produces a model response that is similar to the measured response. This paper reports details about intensity effects for noise stimulation, in particular, the way the BM impedance varies with stimulus intensity. In terms of the underlying cochlear model, the decrease of the "activity component" in the BM impedance with increasing stimulus level is attributed to saturation of transduction in the outer hair cells. In the present paper this property is brought into a quantitative form. According to the theory [the EQ-NL theorem, de Boer, Audit. Neurosci. 3, 377-388 (1997)], the BM impedance is composed of two components, both intrinsically independent of stimulus level. One is the passive impedance Zpass and the other one is the "extra" impedance Zextra. The latter impedance is to be multiplied by a real factor gamma (0 < or = gamma < or = 1) that depends on stimulus level. This concept about the composition of the BM impedance is termed the "two-component theory of the BM impedance." In this work both impedances are entirely derived from experimental data. The dependence of the factor gamma on stimulus level can be derived by using a unified form of the outer-hair-cell transducer function. From an individual experiment, the two functions Zpass and Zextra are determined, and an approximation (Zpass + gamma Zextra) to the BM impedance constructed. Next, the model response (the "resynthesized" response) corresponding to this "artificial" impedance is computed. The same procedure is executed for several stimulus-level values. For all levels, the results show a close correspondence with the original experimental data; this includes correct prediction of the compression of response amplitudes, the reduction of frequency selectivity, the shift in peak frequency and, most importantly, the preservation of timing in the impulse response. All these findings illustrate the predictive power of the underlying model.  相似文献

The relative escape rate (RER) for Brownian particles in an asymmetric bistable sawtooth potential driven by cross correlations between multiplicative white noise and additive white noise is studied. A new expression of the mean first-passage time is derived under the condition of piecewise linear potentials and discontinuous diffusion function. Based on the results of RER numerically calculated, it is found that (i) under positively correlated noises action (i.e. λ > 0, and λ is the correlation strength), the escape rate exhibits the suppression platform as the intensity of multiplicative noise varies. The effect of suppression becomes more pronounced with the growth of height of the deterministic potential barrier for transition, and with the increase of λ. However, for the case of uncorrelated noises (λ = 0) and of negatively correlated noises (λ < 0), the suppression platform disappears. (ii) The positive correlation between noises amplifies the change of the escape rate with the height of barrier for transition, while the negative correlation between noises suppresses this change. The effects of colored noise on self-propelled particles in a two-dimensional potential are investigated. The resonance phenomenon was found as the the average velocity has a maximum value with increasing x direction noise intensity. The average velocity takes its maximal value as the parameters (the y direction noise intensity, the self-propelled angle noise intensity, and so on) take suitable values. The y direction noise and the self-propelled angle noise have great effects on the x direction particles transport. The y direction noise and the self-propelled angle noise cannot induce x direction particles transport in the absence of x direction noise. The ratchet effect should disappear when there is no coupling between the x direction potential and the y direction potential.  相似文献

Kainic acid (KA) is a potent glutamate analog that can temporarily or permanently damage glutamatergic neurons. The purpose of the present study was to determine the short- and long-term effects of KA on chicken otoacoustic emissions and cochlear potentials. A chronic electrode was used to record the compound action potential (CAP), cochlear microphonic (CM), and the slow, positive neural potential (SPNP), a predominantly dc response. The CM, CAP, SPNP, and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) were recorded before and after infusing 10 microl of a low dose (KA-L, 0.3 mM) or high dose (KA-H, 5 mM) of KA into scala tympani. KA caused a rapid and large reduction in CAP and SPNP amplitude in both the KA-H and KA-L groups; however, the CM and DPOAEs were largely unchanged. The amplitude of the CAP and SPNP in the KA-L group began to recover around 1 week post-KA, but was approximately 50% below normal at 4 weeks post-KA. In contrast, the CAP and SPNP showed no signs of recovery in the KA-H group. The results suggest that KA has no effect on the CM and DPOAEs generated by the hair cells, but selectively damages the CAP generated by the cochlear ganglion neurons. The reduction in the avian SPNP suggests that the response originates in the cochlear afferent neurons, unlike the summating potential (SP) in mammals that is generated in hair cells.  相似文献

Previous work has shown that distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOAE) suppression tuning curves (STCs) recorded from premature neonates are narrower than adult STCs at both low and high frequencies. This has been interpreted to indicate an immaturity in cochlear function prior to term birth. However, an alternative explanation for this finding is that adult DPOAE STCs are broadened and reflect cochlear hair cell loss in normal-hearing adults due to aging, and natural exposure to noise and ototoxins. This alternative hypothesis can be tested by studying suppression tuning in normal-hearing school-aged children. If normal-hearing children, who have not aged significantly or been exposed to noise/ototoxins, have DPOAE suppression tuning similar to adults, the auditory aging hypothesis can be ruled out. However, if children have tuning similar to premature neonates and dissimilar from adults, it implicates aging or other factors intrinsic to the adult cochlea. DPOAE STCs were recorded at 1500, 3000, and 6000 Hz using optimal parameters in normal-hearing children and adults. DPOAE STCs collected previously from premature neonates were used for age comparisons. In general, results indicate that tuning curves from children are comparable to adult STCs and significantly different from neonatal STCS at 1500 and 6000 Hz. Only the growth of suppression was not adultlike in children and only at 6000 Hz. These findings do not strongly support the auditory aging hypothesis as a primary explanation for previously observed neonatal-adult differences in DPOAE suppression tuning. It suggests that these age differences are most likely due to immaturities in the neonatal cochlea. However, nonadultlike suppression growth observed in children at 6000 Hz warrants further attention and may be indicative of subtle alternations in the adult cochlea at high frequencies.  相似文献
