Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a powerful technique for performance evaluation of decision making units (DMUs). Ranking efficient DMUs based on a rational analysis is an issue that yet needs further research. The impact of each efficient DMU in evaluation of inefficient DMUs can be considered as additional information to discriminating among efficient DMUs. The concept of reference frontier share is introduced in which the share of each efficient DMU in construction of the reference frontier for evaluating inefficient DMUs is considered. For this purpose a model for measuring the reference frontier share of each efficient DMU associated with each inefficient one is proposed and then a total measure is provided based on which the ranking is made. The new approach has the capability for ranking extreme and non-extreme efficient DMUs. Further, it has no problem in dealing with negative data. These facts are verified by theorems, discussions and numerical examples.  相似文献

The DEAHP method for weight deviation and aggregation in the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) has been found flawed and sometimes produces counterintuitive priority vectors for inconsistent pairwise comparison matrices, which makes its application very restrictive. This paper proposes a new data envelopment analysis (DEA) method for priority determination in the AHP and extends it to the group AHP situation. In this new DEA methodology, two specially constructed DEA models that differ from the DEAHP model are used to derive the best local priorities from a pairwise comparison matrix or a group of pairwise comparison matrices no matter whether they are perfectly consistent or inconsistent. The new DEA method produces true weights for perfectly consistent pairwise comparison matrices and the best local priorities that are logical and consistent with decision makers (DMs)’ subjective judgments for inconsistent pairwise comparison matrices. In hierarchical structures, the new DEA method utilizes the simple additive weighting (SAW) method for aggregation of the best local priorities without the need of normalization. Numerical examples are examined throughout the paper to show the advantages of the new DEA methodology and its potential applications in both the AHP and group decision making.  相似文献

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a method to estimate the relative efficiency of decision-making units (DMUs) performing similar tasks in a production system that consumes multiple inputs to produce multiple outputs. So far, a number of DEA models with interval data have been developed. The CCR model with interval data, the BCC model with interval data and the FDH model with interval data are well known as basic DEA models with interval data. In this study, we suggest a model with interval data called interval generalized DEA (IGDEA) model, which can treat the stated basic DEA models with interval data in a unified way. In addition, by establishing the theoretical properties of the relationships among the IGDEA model and those DEA models with interval data, we prove that the IGDEA model makes it possible to calculate the efficiency of DMUs incorporating various preference structures of decision makers.  相似文献

Efficiency evaluations in data envelopment analysis are shown to be stable for arbitrary perturbations in the convex hulls of input and output data. Also, the corresponding restricted Lagrange multiplier functions are shown to be continuous. The results are proved using point-to-set mappings and a particular region of stability from input optimization.Research partly supported by National Science Foundation Grants, Office of Naval Research Grant, and by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Council of Canada.  相似文献

This paper develops a DEA (data envelopment analysis) model to accommodate competition over outputs. In the proposed model, the total output of all decision making units (DMUs) is fixed, and DMUs compete with each other to maximize their self-rated DEA efficiency score. In the presence of competition over outputs, the best-practice frontier deviates from the classical DEA frontier. We also compute the efficiency scores using the proposed fixed sum output DEA (FSODEA) models, and discuss the competition strategy selection rule. The model is illustrated using a hypothetical data set under the constant returns to scale assumption and medal data from the 2000 Sydney Olympics under the variable returns to scale assumption.  相似文献

It has been widely recognized that data envelopment analysis (DEA) lacks discrimination power to distinguish between DEA efficient units. This paper proposes a new methodology for ranking decision making units (DMUs). The new methodology ranks DMUs by imposing an appropriate minimum weight restriction on all inputs and outputs, which is decided by a decision maker (DM) or an assessor in terms of the solutions to a series of linear programming (LP) models that are specially constructed to determine a maximin weight for each DEA efficient unit. The DM can decide how many DMUs to be retained as DEA efficient in final efficiency ranking according to the requirement of real applications, which provides flexibility for DEA ranking. Three numerical examples are investigated using the proposed ranking methodology to illustrate its power in discriminating between DMUs, particularly DEA efficient units.  相似文献

This paper considers efficiency of a Decision Making Unit (DMU) in Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) with a generalized additive model and a categorical structure. Specifically, it extends the categorical framework in DEA for controllable and noncontrollable situations, and it gives simple, but powerful, tests to determine whether or not a given DMU is efficient.  相似文献

Based on the minimal reduction strategy, Yang et al. (2011) developed a fixed-sum output data envelopment analysis (FSODEA) approach to evaluate the performance of decision-making units (DMUs) with fixed-sum outputs. However, in terms of such a strategy, all DMUs compete over fixed-sum outputs with “no memory” that will result in differing efficient frontiers’ evaluations. To address the problem, in this study, we propose an equilibrium efficiency frontier data envelopment analysis (EEFDEA) approach, by which all DMUs with fixed-sum outputs can be evaluated based on a common platform (or equilibrium efficient frontier). The proposed approach can be divided into two stages. Stage 1 constructs a common evaluation platform via two strategies: an extended minimal adjustment strategy and an equilibrium competition strategy. The former ensures that original efficient DMUs are still efficient, guaranteeing the existence of a common evaluation platform. The latter makes all DMUs achieve a common equilibrium efficient frontier. Then, based on the common equilibrium efficient frontier, Stage 2 evaluates all DMUs with their original inputs and outputs. Finally, we illustrate the proposed approach by using two numerical examples.  相似文献

This work introduces a bi-objective generalized data envelopment analysis (Bi-GDEA) model and defines its efficiency. We show the equivalence between the Bi-GDEA efficiency and the non-dominated solutions of the multi-objective programming problem defined on the production possibility set (PPS) and discuss the returns to scale under the Bi-GDEA model. The most essential contribution is that we further define a point-to-set mapping and the mapping projection of a decision making unit (DMU) on the frontier of the PPS under the Bi-GDEA model. We give an effective approach for the construction of the point-to-set-mapping projection which distinguishes our model from other non-radial models for simultaneously considering input and output. The Bi-GDEA model represents decision makers’ specific preference on input and output and the point-to-set mapping projection provides decision makers with more possibility to determine different input and output alternatives when considering efficiency improvement. Numerical examples are employed for the illustration of the procedure of point-to-set mapping.  相似文献

The concept of efficiency in data envelopment analysis (DEA) is defined as weighted sum of outputs/weighted sum of inputs. In order to calculate the maximum efficiency score, each decision making unit (DMU)’s inputs and outputs are assigned to different weights. Hence, the classical DEA allows the weight flexibility. Therefore, even if they are important, the inputs or outputs of some DMUs can be assigned zero (0) weights. Thus, these inputs or outputs are neglected in the evaluation. Also, some DMUs may be defined as efficient even if they are inefficient. This situation leads to unrealistic results. Also to eliminate the problem of weight flexibility, weight restrictions are made in DEA. In our study, we proposed a new model which has not been published in the literature. We describe it as the restricted data envelopment analysis ((ARIII(COR))) model with correlation coefficients. The aim for developing this new model, is to take into account the relations between variables using correlation coefficients. Also, these relations were added as constraints to the CCR and BCC models. For this purpose, the correlation coefficients were used in the restrictions of input–output each one alone and their combination together. Inputs and outputs are related to the degree of correlation between each other in the production. Previous studies did not take into account the relationship between inputs/outputs variables. So, only with expert opinions or an objective method, weight restrictions have been made. In our study, the weights for input and output variables were determined, according to the correlations between input and output variables. The proposed new method is different from other methods in the literature, because the efficiency scores were calculated at the level of correlations between the input and/or output variables.  相似文献

This paper evaluates the impact of location on hotel efficiency using a sample of 400 Spanish hotels, the novel aspect being that location is considered at the tourist destination level. Moreover, for the first time, the location variables are based on the main theoretical models concerning location in the hotel sector, namely geographical positioning models, agglomeration and urbanization economic models and competitive environment models. The methodology consists of a four-stage data envelopment analysis (DEA) model that decomposes super-efficiency in the portion attributable to the tourist destination and the portion attributable to hotel management. Then, managerial efficiency is regressed against hotel characteristics, while tourist destination efficiency is explained by the characteristic of each location. The findings highlight the importance of tourist destinations, providing novel empirical support for the propositions of the main location models. Indeed, the tourist destination is the main cause of differences in the level of efficiency among hotels. The occupancy level, degree of seasonality and market concentration are the variables with the greater impact on efficiency.  相似文献

Traditional studies in data envelopment analysis (DEA) view systems as a whole when measuring the efficiency, ignoring the operation of individual processes within a system. This paper builds a relational network DEA model, taking into account the interrelationship of the processes within the system, to measure the efficiency of the system and those of the processes at the same time. The system efficiency thus measured more properly represents the aggregate performance of the component processes. By introducing dummy processes, the original network system can be transformed into a series system where each stage in the series is of a parallel structure. Based on these series and parallel structures, the efficiency of the system is decomposed into the product of the efficiencies of the stages in the series and the inefficiency slack of each stage into the sum of the inefficiency slacks of its component processes connected in parallel. With efficiency decomposition, the process which causes the inefficient operation of the system can be identified for future improvement. An example of the non-life insurance industry in Taiwan illustrates the whole idea.

In this paper we first propose a generalized model which in its special case revises a recently proposed model for finding most BCC-efficient DMU. Then, by explaining about the drawbacks of existing approaches, an algorithm will be developed to consider all possible alternative optimal solutions and determine the set of most efficient DMUs. Another model also will be proposed to provide more discrimination which can be used to select a single most efficient DMU, when it is desirable. The proposed approaches of this paper are applicable for all assumptions about returns-to-scale, and can be utilized to select a DMU or provide a full ranking of DMUs. The contents of the paper are illustrated through numerical examples.  相似文献

One of the most important steps in the application of modeling using data envelopment analysis (DEA) is the choice of input and output variables. In this paper, we develop a formal procedure for a “stepwise” approach to variable selection that involves sequentially maximizing (or minimizing) the average change in the efficiencies as variables are added or dropped from the analysis. After developing the stepwise procedure, applications from classic DEA studies are presented and the new managerial insights gained from the stepwise procedure are discussed. We discuss how this easy to understand and intuitively sound method yields useful managerial results and assists in identifying DEA models that include variables with the largest impact on the DEA results.  相似文献

Cook and Zhu (2007) introduced an innovative method to deal with flexible measures. Toloo (2009) found a computational problem in their approach and tackled this issue. Amirteimoori and Emrouznejad (2012) claimed that both Cook and Zhu (2007) and Toloo (2009) models overestimate the efficiency. In this response, we prove that their claim is incorrect and there is no overestimate in these approaches.  相似文献

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a mathematical programming technique which has a wide application area. There are many applications of DEA to measure firms’ performance. Balance sheet data is frequently used in order to measure performance of firms through DEA. So it is the characteristic of balance sheets that assets and liabilities amount to the same value. When the data for inputs and outputs are selected from both assets and liabilities sections of the balance sheet, it is important that more attention be paid to the analysis since values assigned to inputs and outputs could be included in assets and liabilities at the same time. Such a situation could create problems concerning the conclusions drawn as a result of analysis.  相似文献

Manufacturing decision makers have to deal with a large number of reports and metrics for evaluating the performance of manufacturing systems. Since the metrics provide different and at times conflicting assessments, it is hard for the manufacturing decision makers to track and improve overall manufacturing system performance. This research presents a data envelopment analysis (DEA) based approach for performance measurement and target setting of manufacturing systems. The approach is applied to two different manufacturing environments. The performance peer groups identified using DEA are utilized to set performance targets and to guide performance improvement efforts. The DEA scores are checked against past process modifications that led to identified performance changes. Limitations of the DEA based approach are presented when considering measures that are influenced by factors outside of the control of the manufacturing decision makers. The potential of a DEA based generic performance measurement approach for manufacturing systems is provided.  相似文献

Data envelopment analysis (DEA) is a methodology for measuring the relative efficiencies of a set of decision making units (DMUs) that use multiple inputs to produce multiple outputs. Crisp input and output data are fundamentally indispensable in conventional DEA. However, the observed values of the input and output data in real-world problems are sometimes imprecise or vague. Many researchers have proposed various fuzzy methods for dealing with the imprecise and ambiguous data in DEA. In this study, we provide a taxonomy and review of the fuzzy DEA methods. We present a classification scheme with four primary categories, namely, the tolerance approach, the α-level based approach, the fuzzy ranking approach and the possibility approach. We discuss each classification scheme and group the fuzzy DEA papers published in the literature over the past 20 years. To the best of our knowledge, this paper appears to be the only review and complete source of references on fuzzy DEA.  相似文献

The most popular weight restrictions are assurance regions (ARs), which impose ratios between weights to be within certain ranges. ARs can be categorized into two types: ARs type I (ARI) and ARs type II (ARII). ARI specify bounds on ratios between input weights or between output weights, whilst ARII specify bounds on ratios that link input to output weights. DEA models with ARI successfully maximize relative efficiency, but in the presence of ARII the DEA models may under-estimate relative efficiency or may become infeasible. In this paper we discuss the problems that can occur in the presence of ARII and propose a new nonlinear model that overcomes the limitations discussed. Also, the dual model is described, which enables the assessment of relative efficiency when trade-offs between inputs and outputs are specified. The application of the model developed is illustrated in the efficiency assessment of Portuguese secondary schools.  相似文献
