Local scalar front structures of OH mole fraction, reaction progress variable, and its three-dimensional gradient have been measured in stagnation-type turbulent premixed flames. The reaction progress variable front is observed to change with increasing turbulence from parallel iso-scalar contours but reduced progress variable gradients, called the lamella-like front, to disrupted non-parallel iso-contours that deviate substantially from those of wrinkled laminar flamelets, called the non-flamelet front. This transition is attributed to the different scales of interaction between the flame internal structure and a spectrum of turbulence extending from the integral scale to the Kolmogorov scale. The lamella-like front pattern occurs when the length scales of interaction are smaller than the laminar flame thickness but the time scales are greater than the flame residence time. The non-flamelet front pattern occurs when the length scales of interaction are greater than the laminar flame thickness but the time scales are smaller than the flame residence time. This difference corresponds to the change of combustion regime from complex-strain flame front to turbulent flame front on a revised regime diagram. A correlation is also proposed for the turbulent flame brush thickness as a function of turbulent Reynolds number and heat release parameter. The heat release parameter is considered to arise from the non-passive effects of flame-surface wrinkling.  相似文献

This paper presents an assessment of Large Eddy Simulations (LES) in calculating the structure of turbulent premixed flames propagating past solid obstacles. One objective of the present study is to evaluate the LES simulations and identify the drawbacks in accounting the chemical reaction rate. Another objective is to analyse the flame structure and to calculate flame speed, generated overpressure at different time intervals following ignition of a stoichiometric propane/air mixture. The combustion chamber has built-in repeated solid obstructions to enhance the turbulence level and hence increase the flame propagating speed. Various numerical tests have also been carried out to determine the regimes of combustion at different stages of the flame propagation. These have been identified from the calculated results for the flow and flame characteristic parameters. It is found that the flame lies within the ‘thin reaction zone’ regime which supports the use of the laminar flamelet approach for modelling turbulent premixed flames. A submodel to calculate the model coefficient in the algebraic flame surface density model is implemented and examined. It is found that the LES predictions are slightly improved owing to the calculation of model coefficient by using submodel. Results are presented and discussed in this paper are for the flame structure, position, speed, generated pressure and the regimes of combustion during all stages of flame propagation from ignition to venting. The calculated results are validated against available experimental data.  相似文献

Tabulated chemistry and presumed probability density function (PDF) approaches are combined to perform RANS modeling of premixed turbulent combustion. The chemistry is tabulated from premixed flamelets with three independent parameters: the equivalence ratio of the mixture, the progress of reaction, and the specific enthalpy, to account for heat losses at walls. Mean quantities are estimated from presumed PDFs. This approach is used to numerically predict a turbulent premixed flame diluted by hot burnt products at an equivalence ratio that differs from the main stream of reactants. The investigated flame, subjected to high velocity fluctuations, has a thickened-wrinkled structure. A recently proposed closure for scalar dissipation rate that includes an estimation of the coupling between flame wrinkling and micromixing is retained. Comparisons of simulations with experimental measurements of mean velocity, temperature, and reactants are performed.  相似文献

The ignition process, mode of combustion and reaction front propagation in a partially premixed combustion (PPC) engine running with a primary reference fuel (87% iso-octane, 13% n-heptane by volume) is studied numerically in a large eddy simulation. Different combustion modes, ignition front propagation, premixed flame and non-premixed flame, are observed simultaneously. Displacement speed of CO iso-surface propagation describes the transition of premixed auto-ignition to non-premixed flame. High temporal resolution optical data of CH2O and chemiluminescence are compared with simulated results. A high speed ignition front is seen to expand through fuel-rich mixture and stabilize around stoichiometry in a non-premixed flame while lean premixed combustion occurs in the spray wake at a much slower pace. A good qualitative agreement of the distribution of chemiluminescence and CH2O formation and destruction shows that the simulation approach sufficiently captures the driving physics of mixed-mode combustion in PPC engines. The study shows that the transition from auto-ignition to flame occurs over a period of several crank angles and the reaction front propagation can be captured using the described model.  相似文献

This study focuses on the modelling of turbulent lifted jet flames using flamelets and a presumed Probability Density Function (PDF) approach with interest in both flame lift-off height and flame brush structure. First, flamelet models used to capture contributions from premixed and non-premixed modes of the partially premixed combustion in the lifted jet flame are assessed using a Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) data for a turbulent lifted hydrogen jet flame. The joint PDFs of mixture fraction Z and progress variable c, including their statistical correlation, are obtained using a copula method, which is also validated using the DNS data. The statistically independent PDFs are found to be generally inadequate to represent the joint PDFs from the DNS data. The effects of Zc correlation and the contribution from the non-premixed combustion mode on the flame lift-off height are studied systematically by including one effect at a time in the simulations used for a posteriori validation. A simple model including the effects of chemical kinetics and scalar dissipation rate is suggested and used for non-premixed combustion contributions. The results clearly show that both Zc correlation and non-premixed combustion effects are required in the premixed flamelets approach to get good agreement with the measured flame lift-off heights as a function of jet velocity. The flame brush structure reported in earlier experimental studies is also captured reasonably well for various axial positions. It seems that flame stabilisation is influenced by both premixed and non-premixed combustion modes, and their mutual influences.  相似文献

Laminar flame speed (LFS) is one of the most important physicochemical properties of a combustible mixture. At normal and elevated temperatures and pressures, LFS can be measured using propagating spherical flames in a closed chamber. LFS is also used in certain turbulent premixed flame modelling for combustion in spark ignition engines. Inside the closed chamber or engine, transient pressure rise occurs during the premixed flame propagation. The effects of pressure rise rate (PRR) on LFS are examined numerically in this study. One-dimensional simulations are conducted for spherical flame propagation in a closed chamber. Detailed chemistry and transport are considered. Different values of PRR at the same temperature and pressure are achieved through changing the spherical chamber size. It is found that the effect of PRR on LFS is negligible under the normal and engine-relevant conditions considered in this study. This observation is then explained through the comparison between the unsteady and convection terms in the energy equation for a premixed flame.  相似文献

The inner structure, and the physical behaviour of turbulent premixed flames are usually described, and classified by means of the regime diagram introduced by Borghi and Peters. Thereby properties related to both the flame and the (turbulent) flow are considered. In this work a diagram valid for all physical regimes, comprising suitable requirements for laminar simulations, direct numerical simulation (DNS), large-eddy simulation (LES), and Reynolds averaging based numerical simulation (RANS) is proposed. In particular the diagram describes essential situations within the validity limits of the “Borghi, Peters diagram” which physical phenomena are resolved by the simulation, and which have to be modelled. This information is used for systematic classification of various models by suggesting specific models that are appropriate depending on the regime and numerical resolution, and may provide guidance for numerical simulation methods and model development in turbulent premixed combustion. This might help users as a guideline in choosing appropriate models for a given device, and numerical effort available. The regime diagram suggested by Pitsch and Duchamp de Lageneste, which includes DNS and LES by explicitely accounting for the numerical related variable filterwidth, emerges here as one of the special two-dimensional cases possible. In contrast to the generalized regime diagram, their diagram does not include laminar simulations, and RANS based considerations, while transition between wrinkled and corrugated flamelets is not clearly established.  相似文献

Pilot-ignited dual fuel combustion involves a complex transition between the pilot fuel autoignition and the premixed-like phase of combustion, which is challenging for experimental measurement and numerical modelling, and not sufficiently explored. To further understand the fundamentals of the dual fuel ignition processes, the transient ignition and subsequent flame development in a turbulent dimethyl ether (DME)/methane-air mixing layer under diesel engine-relevant conditions are studied by direct numerical simulations (DNS). Results indicate that combustion is initiated by a two-stage autoignition that involves both low-temperature and high-temperature chemistry. The first stage autoignition is initiated at the stoichiometric mixture, and then the ignition front propagates against the mixture fraction gradient into rich mixtures and eventually forms a diffusively-supported cool flame. The second stage ignition kernels are spatially distributed around the most reactive mixture fraction with a low scalar dissipation rate. Multiple triple flames are established and propagate along the stoichiometric mixture, which is proven to play an essential role in the flame developing process. The edge flames gradually get close to each other with their branches eventually connected. It is the leading lean premixed branch that initiates the steady propagating methane-air flame. The time required for the initiation of steady flame is substantially shorter than the autoignition delay time of the methane-air mixture under the same thermochemical condition. Temporal evolution of the displacement speed at the flame front is also investigated to clarify the propagation characteristics of the combustion waves. Cool flame and propagation of triple flames are also identified in this study, which are novel features of the pilot-ignited dual fuel combustion.  相似文献

Auto-ignition of turbulent non-premixed systems is encountered in practical devices such as diesel internal combustion engines. It remains a challenge for modellers, as it exhibits specific features such as unsteadiness, flame propagation and combustion far from stoichiometric conditions. In this paper, a two-dimensional DNS database of an igniting H2/O2/N2 mixing layer, including detailed chemistry and transport, is extensively post-processed in order to gain physical insight into the flame structure and dynamics during auto-ignition. The results are used as a framework for the development of a generalized flame surface density modelling approach by integrating the equations over all possible mixture fraction values. The mean reaction rate is split into two contributions: a generalized flame surface density and a mean reaction rate per unit generalized flame surface density. The unsteadiness of the ignition phenomenon is accounted for via a generalized progress variable. Closures for the generalized surface average of the reaction rate and for the generalized progress variable are proposed, and the modelling approach is tested a priori versus the DNS data. The use of a laminar database for the chemistry coupled to the mean turbulent field via the generalized progress variable shows very promising results, capturing the correct ignition delay and the premixed peak in the turbulent mean heat release rate evolution. This allows confidence in future inclusion and validation of this approach in a RANS-CFD code.  相似文献

The propagation of laminar and turbulent expanding flames subjected to Darrieus–Landau (DL), hydrodynamic instability was experimentally studied by employing stoichiometric H2/O2/N2 flames under quiescent and turbulent conditions performed in a newly developed medium-scale, fan-stirred combustion chamber. In quiescent environment, DL unstable laminar flame exhibits three-stage propagation, i.e. smooth expansion, transition acceleration, and self-similar acceleration. The self-similar acceleration is characterized by a power-law growth of acceleration exponent, α, with normalized Peclet number, which is different from the usually suggested self-similar propagation with a constant α. The imposed turbulence advances the onset of both transition acceleration and self-similar acceleration stages and promotes the strength of flame acceleration as additional wrinkles are invoked by turbulence eddies. A DL–turbulent interaction regime is confirmed to be the classical corrugated flamelets regime. Furthermore, the DL instability significantly facilitates the propagation of expanding flames in medium and even intense turbulence. The development of DL cells is not suppressed by turbulence eddies, and it needs to be considered in turbulent combustion.  相似文献

Tabulated chemistry models allow to include detailed chemistry effects at low cost in numerical simulations of reactive flows. Characteristics of the reactive fluid flows are described by a reduced set of parameters that are representative of the flame structure at small scales so-called flamelets. For a specific turbulent combustion configuration, flamelet combustion closure, with proper formulation of the flame structure can be applied. In this study, flamelet generated manifolds (FGM) combustion closure with progress variable approach were incorporated with OpenFOAM® source code to model combustion within compression ignition engines. For IC engine applications, multi-dimensional flamelet look-up tables for counter flow diffusive flame configuration were generated. Source terms of non-premixed combustion configuration in flamelet domain were tabulated based on pressure, temperature of unburned mixture, mixture fraction, and progress variable. A new frozen flamelet method was introduced to link one dimensional reaction diffusion space to multi-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) physical space to fulfill correct modelling of thermal state of the engine at expansion stroke when charge composition was changed after combustion and reaction rates were subsided. Predictability of the developed numerical framework were evaluated for Sandia Spray A (constant volume vessel), Spray B (light duty optical Diesel engine), and a heavy duty Diesel engine experiments under Reynolds averaged Navier Stokes turbulence formulation. Results showed that application of multi-dimensional FGM combustion closure can comprehensively predict key parameters such as: ignition delay, in-cylinder pressure, apparent heat release rate, flame lift-off , and flame structure in Diesel engines.  相似文献

Laminar flame propagation is an important problem in combustion modelling for which great advances have been achieved both in its theoretical understanding and in the numerical solution of the governing equations in 2D and 3D. Most of these numerical simulations use finite difference techniques on simple geometries (channels, ducts, ...) with equispaced nodes. The objective of this work is to explore the applicability of the radial basis function generated finite difference (RBF-FD) method to laminar flame propagation modelling. This method is specially well suited for the solution of problems with complex geometries and irregular boundaries. Another important advantage is that the method is independent of the dimension of the problem and, therefore, it is very easy to apply in 3D problems with complex geometries. In this work we use the RBF-FD method to compute 2D and 3D numerical results that simulate premixed laminar flames with different Lewis numbers propagating in open ducts.  相似文献

The ignition and combustion processes of transient turbulent methane jets under high-pressure and moderate temperature conditions were simulated using a computationally efficient combustion model. Closure for the mean chemical source-terms was obtained with Conditional Source-term Estimation (CSE) using first conditional moment closure in conjunction with a detailed chemical kinetic mechanism, which was reduced to a Trajectory-Generated Low-Dimensional Manifold (TGLDM). The accuracy of the manifold was first validated against the direct integral method by comparing the predicted reactive scalar profiles in three methane–air reaction systems: a laminar premixed flame, a laminar flamelet and a perfectly stirred reactor. Detailed CFD simulations incorporating the CSE-TGLDM model were able to provide reasonably good predictions of the experimental ignition delay and initial ignition kernel locations of the methane jets reported in the literature with relatively low computational cost. Nitrogen oxides formed in the methane jet flame were found to be underpredicted by the model by as much as a factor of 2. The discrepancy may be attributable to the inability of the simulation to account for the effects of the rarefaction wave in the shock-tube experiments.  相似文献

Laminar premixed cool flames, induced by the coupling of low-temperature chemistry and convective-diffusive transport process, have recently attracted extensive interest in combustion and engine research. In this work, numerical simulations have been conducted using a recently developed open-source reacting flow platform reactingFOAM-SCT, to investigate the minimum ignition energy (MIE) and propagation dynamics of premixed cool flames in a 1D spherical coordinate. Results have shown that when ignition energy is below the MIE of regular hot flames, a class of cool flames could be initiated, which allow much wider flammability limits, both lean and rich, compared to hot flames. Furthermore, the overall cool flame propagation dynamics exhibit intrinsic similarity to those of hot flames, in that, they begin with an ignition kernel propagation regime, followed by two transition regimes, and eventually reach a normal flame propagation regime. However, a spherical expanding cool flame responds completely differently to stretch. Specifically, a regular outwardly propagating hot spherical flame accelerates with increasing stretch rate when the mixture Le < 1 and decelerates when Le > 1. However, it is found that a cool flame always tends to decelerate with increasing stretch rate regardless of mixture composition, exhibiting unique flame aerodynamic characteristic. This research discovers novel features of premixed cool flame initiation and propagation dynamics and sheds light on flame transition, spark-ignition system design, and advanced engine combustion control.  相似文献

In this paper, an experimental and numerical investigation of premixed methane/air flame dynamics in a closed combustion vessel with a thin obstacle is described. In the experiment, high-speed video photography and a pressure transducer are used to study the flame shape changes and pressure dynamics. In the numerical simulation, four sub-grid scale viscosity models and three sub-grid scale combustion models are evaluated for their individual prediction compared with the experimental data. High-speed photographs show that the flame propagation process can be divided into five stages: spherical flame, finger-shaped flame, jet flame, mushroom-shaped flame and bidirectional propagation flame. Compared with the other sub-grid scale viscosity models and sub-grid scale combustion models, the dynamic Smagorinsky–Lilly model and the power-law flame wrinkling model are better able to predict the flame behaviour, respectively. Thus, coupling the dynamic Smagorinsky–Lilly model and the power-law flame wrinkling model, the numerical results demonstrate that flame shape change is a purely hydrodynamic phenomenon, and the mushroom-shaped flame and bidirectional propagation flame are the result of flame–vortex interaction. In addition, the transition from “corrugated flamelets” to “thin reaction zones” is observed in the simulation.  相似文献

The initial propagation processes of expanding spherical flames of CH4/N2/O2/He mixtures at different ignition energies were investigated experimentally and numerically to reduce the effect of ignition energy on the accurate determination of laminar flame speeds. The experiments were conducted in a constant-volume combustion bomb at initial pressures of 0.07???0.7?MPa, initial temperatures of 298???398?K, and equivalence ratios of 0.9???1.3 with various Lewis numbers. The A-SURF program was employed to simulate the corresponding flame propagation processes. The results show that elevating the ignition energy increases the initial flame propagation speed and expands the range of flame trajectory which is affected by ignition energy, but the increase rates of the speed and range decrease with the ignition energy. Based on the trend of the minimum flame propagation speed during the initial period with the ignition energy, the minimum reliable ignition energy (MRIE) is derived by considering the initial flame propagation speed and energy conservation. It is observed that MRIE first decreases and then increases with the increasing equivalence ratio and monotonously decreases with increasing initial pressure and temperature. As the Lewis number rises, MRIE increases. The results also suggest that during the data processing of the spherical flame experiment, the accuracy of determination of laminar flame speeds can be enhanced when taking the flame radius influenced by MRIE as the lower limit of the flame radius range. Then the flame radius influenced by MRIE was defined as RFR. It can also be found that there exist nonlinear relationships between RFR and the equivalence ratio and Lewis number, and the RFR decreases with increasing initial pressure and temperature.  相似文献

Usually premixed flame propagation and laminar burning velocity are studied for mixtures at normal or elevated temperatures and pressures, under which the ignition delay time of the premixture is much larger than the flame resistance time. However, in spark-ignition engines and spark-assisted compression ignition engines, the end-gas in the front of premixed flame is at the state that autoignition might happen before the mixture is consumed by the premixed flame. In this study, laminar premixed flames propagating into an autoigniting dimethyl ether/air mixture are simulated considering detailed chemistry and transport. The emphasis is on the laminar burning velocity of autoigniting mixtures under engine-relevant conditions. Two types of premixed flames are considered: one is the premixed planar flame propagating into an autoigniting DME/air without confinement; and the other is premixed spherical flame propagating inside a closed chamber, for which four stages are identified. Due to the confinement, the unburned mixture is compressed to high temperature and pressure close to or under engine-relevant conditions. The laminar burning velocity is determined from the constant-volume propagating spherical flame method as well as PREMIX. The laminar burning velocities of autoigniting DME/air mixture at different temperatures, pressures, and autoignition progresses are obtained. It is shown that the first-stage and second-stage autoignition can significantly accelerate the flame propagation and thereby greatly increase the laminar burning velocity. When the first-stage autoignition occurs in the unburned mixture, the isentropic compression assumption does not hold and thereby the traditional method cannot be used to calculate the laminar burning velocity. A modified method without using the isentropic compression assumption is proposed. It is shown to work well for autoigniting mixtures. Besides, a power law correlation is obtained based on all the laminar burning velocity data. It works well for mixtures before autoignition while improvement is still needed for mixtures after autoignition.  相似文献

SI-CAI hybrid combustion, also known as spark-assisted compression ignition (SACI), is a promising concept to extend the operating range of CAI (Controlled Auto-Ignition) and achieve the smooth transition between spark ignition (SI) and CAI in the gasoline engine. In this study, a SI-CAI hybrid combustion model (HCM) has been constructed on the basis of the 3-Zones Extended Coherent Flame Model (ECFM3Z). An ignition model is included to initiate the ECFM3Z calculation and induce the flame propagation. In order to precisely depict the subsequent auto-ignition process of the unburned fuel and air mixture independently after the initiation of flame propagation, the tabulated chemistry concept is adopted to describe the auto-ignition chemistry. The methodology for extracting tabulated parameters from the chemical kinetics calculations is developed so that both cool flame reactions and main auto-ignition combustion can be well captured under a wider range of thermodynamic conditions. The SI-CAI hybrid combustion model (HCM) is then applied in the three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (3-D CFD) engine simulation. The simulation results are compared with the experimental data obtained from a single cylinder VVA engine. The detailed analysis of the simulations demonstrates that the SI-CAI hybrid combustion process is characterised with the early flame propagation and subsequent multi-site auto-ignition around the main flame front, which is consistent with the optical results reported by other researchers. Besides, the systematic study of the in-cylinder condition reveals the influence mechanism of the early flame propagation on the subsequent auto-ignition.  相似文献
