A predictive simulation of the autoignition process of non-premixed methane in a turbulent jet configuration was performed. Closure for the chemical source-term was obtained using Conditional Source-term Estimation with Laminar Flamelet Decomposition (CSE-LFD). The ambient oxidizer conditions – the high pressure and moderate temperatures characteristic of compression ignition engines – were chosen with the intent to validate the combustion model used under engine-relevant conditions. Validation was obtained by comparison of the predicted ignition delay to experimental results obtained from a shock-tube facility at several initial temperatures. Overall, the combination of full chemistry that has been carefully tuned to predict autoignition of premixed methane–air mixtures under similar temperature/pressure conditions with the CSE-LFD model is able to successfully predict the autoignition delay time of methane–air jets well within the scatter in the experimental data.

A novel numerical method has been developed to couple a recent high order accurate fully compressible upwind method with the Conditional Moment Closure combustion model. The governing equations, turbulence modelling and numerical methods are presented in full. The new numerical method is validated against direct numerical simulation (DNS) data for a lean premixed methane slot burner. Although the modelling approaches are based on non-premixed flames and hence not expected to be valid for a wide range of premixed flames, the predicted flame is just 10% longer than that in the DNS and excellent agreement of mean mass fractions, conditional mass fractions and temperature is demonstrated. This new numerical method provides a very useful framework for future application of CMC to premixed as well as non-premixed combustion.  相似文献

The ignition and combustion processes of transient turbulent methane jets under high-pressure and moderate temperature conditions were simulated using a computationally efficient combustion model. Closure for the mean chemical source-terms was obtained with Conditional Source-term Estimation (CSE) using first conditional moment closure in conjunction with a detailed chemical kinetic mechanism, which was reduced to a Trajectory-Generated Low-Dimensional Manifold (TGLDM). The accuracy of the manifold was first validated against the direct integral method by comparing the predicted reactive scalar profiles in three methane–air reaction systems: a laminar premixed flame, a laminar flamelet and a perfectly stirred reactor. Detailed CFD simulations incorporating the CSE-TGLDM model were able to provide reasonably good predictions of the experimental ignition delay and initial ignition kernel locations of the methane jets reported in the literature with relatively low computational cost. Nitrogen oxides formed in the methane jet flame were found to be underpredicted by the model by as much as a factor of 2. The discrepancy may be attributable to the inability of the simulation to account for the effects of the rarefaction wave in the shock-tube experiments.  相似文献

This study focuses on the modelling of turbulent lifted jet flames using flamelets and a presumed Probability Density Function (PDF) approach with interest in both flame lift-off height and flame brush structure. First, flamelet models used to capture contributions from premixed and non-premixed modes of the partially premixed combustion in the lifted jet flame are assessed using a Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) data for a turbulent lifted hydrogen jet flame. The joint PDFs of mixture fraction Z and progress variable c, including their statistical correlation, are obtained using a copula method, which is also validated using the DNS data. The statistically independent PDFs are found to be generally inadequate to represent the joint PDFs from the DNS data. The effects of Zc correlation and the contribution from the non-premixed combustion mode on the flame lift-off height are studied systematically by including one effect at a time in the simulations used for a posteriori validation. A simple model including the effects of chemical kinetics and scalar dissipation rate is suggested and used for non-premixed combustion contributions. The results clearly show that both Zc correlation and non-premixed combustion effects are required in the premixed flamelets approach to get good agreement with the measured flame lift-off heights as a function of jet velocity. The flame brush structure reported in earlier experimental studies is also captured reasonably well for various axial positions. It seems that flame stabilisation is influenced by both premixed and non-premixed combustion modes, and their mutual influences.  相似文献

We present a numerical approach for low Mach number combustion that conserves both mass and energy while remaining on the equation of state to a desired tolerance. We present both unconfined and confined cases, where in the latter the ambient pressure changes over time. Our overall scheme is a projection method for the velocity coupled to a multi-implicit spectral deferred corrections (SDC) approach to integrate the mass and energy equations. The iterative nature of SDC methods allows us to incorporate a series of pressure discrepancy corrections naturally that lead to additional mass and energy influx/outflux in each finite volume cell in order to satisfy the equation of state. The method is second order, and satisfies the equation of state to a desired tolerance with increasing iterations. Motivated by experimental results, we test our algorithm on hydrogen flames with detailed kinetics. We examine the morphology of thermodiffusively unstable cylindrical premixed flames in high-pressure environments for confined and unconfined cases. We also demonstrate that our algorithm maintains the equation of state for premixed methane flames and non-premixed dimethyl ether jet flames.  相似文献

Passive noise control devices for jet flows, such as chevron nozzles, have been studied for a long time due to their large application in turbofan engines. The main purpose of their usage is the reduction of low-frequency noise generation and thus decreasing the noise perceived at the far field. This work is a numerical study of acoustic noise generated by jet flow operating at Mach number 0.9 and Reynolds number 1.38 × 106, considering two chevron nozzle geometries that differ from each other by the penetration angle into the flow. The main aim was to demonstrate that Reynolds averaged Navier Stokes (RANS)-based methods are reliable means to obtain acoustical noise predictions for the industry with a considerably low computational cost. In order to achieve this objective, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) RANS simulations were performed with a cubic k-ɛ model and the acoustic noise spectrum for different angles of radiation was obtained via the Lighthill ray-tracing (LRT) method. The numerical results for the acoustic and flow fields were seen to be in reasonable agreement with the experimental data, suggesting that this methodology can be used as a fast and useful option to predict acoustic noise of jet flows from chevron nozzles.  相似文献

In the present work, three-dimensional turbulent non-premixed oblique slot-jet flames impinging at a wall were investigated using direct numerical simulation (DNS). Two cases are considered with the Damköhler number (Da) of case A being twice that of case B. A 17 species and 73-step mechanism for methane combustion was employed in the simulations. It was found that flame extinction in case B is more prominent compared to case A. Reignition in the lower branch of combustion for case A occurs when the scalar dissipation rate relaxes, while no reignition occurs in the lower branch for case B due to excessive scalar dissipation rate. A method was proposed to identify the flame quenching edges of turbulent non-premixed flames in wall-bounded flows based on the intersections of mixture fraction and OH mass fraction iso-surfaces. The flame/wall interactions were examined in terms of the quenching distance and the wall heat flux along the quenching edges. There is essentially no flame/wall interaction in case B due to the extinction caused by excessive turbulent mixing. In contrast, significant interactions between flames and the wall are observed in case A. The quenching distance is found to be negatively correlated with wall heat flux as previously reported in turbulent premixed flames. The influence of chemical reactions and wall on flow topologies was identified. The FS/U and FC/U topologies are found near flame edges, and the NNN/U topology appears when reignition occurs. The vortex-dominant topologies, FC/U and FS/S, play an increasingly important role as the jet turbulence develops.  相似文献

A turbulent combustion model, Conditional Source-term Estimation (CSE) is applied to a non-premixed turbulent jet methane flame. The conditional chemical source terms are determined on the basis of first order closure and the conditional averaged species concentrations are obtained by inverting an integral equation. The Tikhonov method is implemented for regularisation. Detailed chemistry is tabulated using the trajectory generated low-dimensional manifold method. Radiation due to the gaseous species is included. Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes calculations are performed using two different turbulence models. The objectives of the paper are (i) assessment of the impact of the main numerical parameters in CSE and (ii) comparison of the CSE numerical predictions with available experimental data and results from previous simulations for the selected flame. The number of CSE domains and the number of points in each CSE domain are shown to have a significant impact on the results if not selected appropriately. The present CSE calculations always converge to unique and stable predictions. The corrected k–ε model yields mixture fraction profiles in good agreement with the experimental data values for axial locations in the first half of the flame. Farther downstream, the RNG k–ε model performs better. Overall, the current predictions for the mixture fraction are in good agreement with the experimental data. The predicted temperatures using CSE and the k–ε turbulence model with a modified value of Cε1 = 1.47 are found to be in very good agreement with the experimental data. Further, the current CSE results are of comparable quality with previous simulations using the flamelet model and conditional moment closure. Future work may include further investigation on optimal determination of the regularisation parameter and alternative regularisation techniques, soot modelling within the CSE formulation, and improved formulation of radiation.  相似文献

The averaged jet charge characterizes the electric charge of the initiating parton and provides a powerful tool to distinguish quark jets from gluon jets.We predict, for the first time, the medium modification of the averaged jet charge in the heavy-ion collisions at the LHC,where jet productions in p+p collisions are simulated by PYTHIA6,and the parton energy loss in QGP is calculated with two Monte Carlo models of jet quenching:PYQUEN and JEWEL.We found that the distribution of averaged jet charge is significantly suppressed by initial state isospin effects due to the participation of neutrons with zero electric charge during nuclear collisions. The considerable enhancement of the averaged jet charge in central Pb+Pb collisions is observed relative to peripheral collisions, since the jet quenching effect is more pronounced in central collisions. The distinct feature of the averaged jet charge between quark and gluon jets, along with the sensitivity of medium modifications on the jet charge to flavor dependence of the parton energy loss, could be very useful to discriminate the energy loss pattern between quark and gluon jets in heavy-ion collisions.  相似文献

In this paper, the importance of fluctuations in flow field parameters is studied under MILD combustion conditions. In this way, a turbulent non-premixed CH4+H2 jet flame issuing into a hot and deficient co-flow air is modeled using the RANS Axisymmetric equations. The modeling is carried out using the EDC model to describe the turbulence-chemistry interaction. The DRM-22 reduced mechanism and the GRI2.11 full mechanism are used to represent the chemical reactions of H2/methane jet flame. Results illustrate that although the fluctuations in temperature field are small and the reaction zone volume are large in the MILD regime, the fluctuations in temperature and species concentrations are still effective on the flow field. Also, inappropriate dealing with the turbulence effect on chemistry leads to errors in prediction of temperature up to 15% in the present flame. By decreasing of O2 concentration of hot co-flow air, the effect of fluctuations in flow field parameters on flame characteristics are still significant and its effect on species reaction rates does not decrease. On the other hand, although decreasing of jet inlet Reynolds number at constant inlet turbulence intensity addresses to smaller fluctuations in flow filed, it does not lead to lower the effect of turbulence on species distribution and temperature field under MILD combustion conditions.  相似文献

The instantaneous and ensemble averaged flow characteristics of a round jet issuing normally into a crossflow was studied using a flow visualization technique and Particle Image Velocimetry measurements. Experiments were performed at a jet-to-crossflow velocity ratio, 3.3 and two Reynolds numbers, 1,050 and 2,100, based on crossflow velocity and jet diameter. Instantaneous laser tomographic images of the vertical center plane of the crossflow jet show that there exists very different natures in the flow structures of the near field jet due to Reynolds number effect even though the velocity ratio is same. It is found that the shear layer becomes much thicker when the Reynolds number is 2,100 because of the strong entrainment of the inviscid fluid by turbulent interaction between the jet and crossflow. The mean and second order statistics are calculated by ensemble averaging over 1,000 realizations of instantaneous velocity fields. The detail characteristics of mean flow field, streamwise and vertical rms velocity fluctuations, and Reynolds shear stress distributions are presented. The new PIV results are compared with those from previous experimental and LES studies.  相似文献

As lean premixed combustion systems are more susceptible to combustion instabilities than non-premixed systems, there is an increasing demand for improved numerical design tools that can predict the occurrence of combustion instabilities with high accuracy. The inherent nonlinearities in combustion instabilities can be of crucial importance, and we here propose an approach in which the one-dimensional (1D) Navier-Stokes and scalar transport equations are solved for geometries of variable cross-section. The focus is on attached flames, and for this purpose a new phenomenological model for the unsteady heat release from a flame front is introduced. In the attached flame method (AFM) the heat release occurs over the full length of the flame. The nonlinear code with the use of the AFM approach is validated against analytical results and against an experimental study of thermoacoustic instabilities in oxy-fuel flames by Ditaranto and Hals [Combustion and Flame 146 (2006) 493-512]. The numerical simulations are in accordance with the experimental measurements and the analytical results and both the frequencies and the amplitudes of the resonant acoustic pressure modes are reproduced with good accuracy.  相似文献

Experimental and numerical investigations of the ignition of hydrogen/air mixtures by jets of hot exhaust gases are reported. An experimental realisation of such an ignition process, where a jet of hot exhaust gas impinges through a narrow nozzle into a quiescent hydrogen/air mixture, possibly initiating ignition and combustion, is studied. High-speed laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) image sequences of the hydroxyl radical (OH) and laser Schlieren methods are used to gain information about the spatial and temporal evolution of the ignition process. Recording temporally resolved pressure traces yields information about ambient conditions for the process. Numerical experiments are performed that allow linking these observables to certain characteristic states of the gas mixture. The outcome of numerical modelling and experiments indicates the important influence of the hot jet temperature and speed of mixing between the hot and cold gases on the ignition process. The results show the quenching of the flame inside the nozzle and the subsequent ignition of the mixture by the hot exhaust jet. These detailed examinations of the ignition process improve the knowledge concerning flame transmission out of electrical equipment of the type of protection flameproof enclosure.  相似文献

The present study considers the performance of tabulation methods for numerical simulation of complex chemical kinetics in laminar combusting flows and compares their predictions to results obtained by direct calculation. Two tabulation methods are considered: the Flame Prolongation of Intrinsic low-dimensional manifold (FPI) method and Steady Laminar Flamelet Model (SLFM). The FPI method is of current interest as it is a potentially unifying approach capable of dealing with both premixed and non-premixed flames for gaseous fuels. SLFM tabulation methods are popular for non-premixed flames and form a good basis for comparing the performance of the FPI approach. The performance of each method is also evaluated by comparing the results to the direct simulation of the laminar flames using two chemical kinetic schemes: simplified chemistry involving five species and one reaction and detailed chemistry involving 53 species and 325 reaction steps. As part of the evaluation process, the computational cost of each method is also assessed. The laminar flames considered in this study include: freely propagating laminar premixed flames, a two-dimensional axisymmetric methane–air opposed-jet diffusion flame, and a two-dimensional axisymmetric methane–air co-flow diffusion flame. Both tabulation methods are implemented in a parallel adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) framework for solving the complete set of governing partial differential equations. These equations are solved using a fully-coupled finite-volume formulation on body-fitted multi-block quadrilateral mesh. Significant improvements in terms of reduced computational requirements, as measured by both storage and processing time, are demonstrated for the tabulated methods.  相似文献

An improved version of the Lagrangian multiple mapping conditioning model coupled with large eddy simulation (MMC-LES) is applied to compute the structure of a range of turbulent mixed-mode flames stabilised on the Sydney piloted burner with compositionally inhomogeneous inlet. The calculations are compared with detailed measurements. While premixed MMC-LES models are yet to be developed, the most commonly deployed version and code for MMC-LES uses a mixture-fraction-based approach and a sparse-Lagrangian notional particle method that is most suitable for non-premixed combustion. The improvements reported here are due to (i) a more rigorous density coupling approach, (ii) a more refined mixing time scale, and (iii) selective particle intensification to improve localness in physical space as well as mixture fraction space. This intensification is selectively applied in upstream regions where mixed-mode combustion dominates and is relaxed further downstream as the jet flames transition to a non-premixed flame structure. The computed results show good agreement with experimental data hence confirming the feasibility of the improved MMC-LES approach in being able to account for mixed-mode combustion as well as for finite-rate chemistry effects. These promising results warrant future extension of the selective particle intensification method to become automatically adaptive.  相似文献
