The depression of the analytical signal of calcium by phosphate ion when using turbulent (H2/02 and H2/A/entrained air) and laminar (C2/H2/air) flames in flame spectro-ietry is studied. Measurements of flame emission of calcium as a function of calcium to phosphate and pyrophosphate molar ratios for various flame heights in both turbulent and laminar flames are made. The phosphate interference when using turbulent flames is shown to be a result of a slow vaporization of the calcium phosphate particles. The phosphate interference when using laminar flames with chamber type aspirators is only important at high calcium and phosphate concentrations. The cause of the interference is probably a result of either slow vaporization of the calcium phosphate particles or a slow rate of change of the orthophosphate to pyrophosphate during the decomposition step.  相似文献

Conditional Source-term Estimation (CSE) is a turbulent combustion model that uses conditional averages to close the chemical source term. Previous CSE studies have shown that the model is able to predict the flame characteristics successfully; however, these studies have only focused on simple hydrocarbon fuels mostly composed of methane. The objective of the present paper is to evaluate the capabilities of CSE applied to turbulent non-premixed methanol flames, which has never been done previously. The current study investigates two different types of methanol flames: piloted and bluff-body flames. For the piloted flame, the standard k–ε model is used for turbulence modelling, while the Shear Stress Transport (SST) k–ω model is applied to the bluff-body case. Different values of empirical constants within the turbulence models were tested, and it was found that Cε1 = 1.7 for the piloted flame and γ2 = 0.66 for the bluff-body flame provided the best agreement with experimental measurements for the mixing field. Detailed chemistry is included in tabulated form using the Trajectory Generated Low-Dimensional Manifold (TGLDM) method. The predictions including both the Favre-averaged and conditional mass fraction of reactive species and temperature are compared with available experimental data and previous numerical results. Overall, the CSE predictions of conditional and unconditional quantities are in good agreement with the experimental data except for hydrogen. Sources of discrepancies are identified such as the chemical kinetics and neglect of differential diffusion. Large eddy simulations may also help to improve the velocity and mixing field predictions.  相似文献

A transport equation for scalar flux in turbulent premixed flames was modelled on the basis of DNS databases. Fully developed turbulent premixed flames were obtained for three different density ratios of flames with a single-step irreversible reaction, while the turbulent intensity was comparable to the laminar burning velocity. These DNS databases showed that the countergradient diffusion was dominant in the flame region. Analyses of the Favre-averaged transport equation for turbulent scalar flux proved that the pressure related terms and the velocity–reaction rate correlation term played important roles on the countergradient diffusion, while the mean velocity gradient term, the mean progress variable gradient term and dissipation terms suppressed it. Based on these analyses, modelling of the combustion-related terms was discussed. The mean pressure gradient term and the fluctuating pressure term were modelled by scaling, and these models were in good agreement with DNS databases. The dissipation terms and the velocity–reaction rate correlation term were also modelled, and these models mimicked DNS well.  相似文献

Different approaches to the modelling of turbulent combustion first are reviewed briefly. A unified, stretched flamelet approach then is presented. With Reynolds stress modelling and a generalized probability density function (PDF) of strain rate, it enables a source term, in the form of a probability of burning function, Pb, to be expressed as a function of Markstein numbers and the Karlovitz stretch factor. When Pb is combined with some turbulent flame fractal considerations, an expression is obtained for the turbulent burning velocity. When it is combined with the profile of the unstretched laminar flame volumetric heat release rate plotted against the reaction progress variable and the PDF of the latter, an expression is obtained for the mean volumetric turbulent heat release rate. Through these relationships experimental values of turbulent burning velocity might be used to evaluate Pb and hence the CFD source term, the mean volumetric heat release rate.

Different theoretical expressions for the turbulent burning velocity, including the present one, are compared with experimental measurements. The differences between these are discussed and this is followed by a review of CFD applications of these flamelet concepts to premixed and non-premixed combustion. The various assumptions made in the course of the analyses are scrutinized in the light of recent direct numerical simulations of turbulent flames and the applications to the flames of laser diagnostics. Remaining problem areas include a sufficiently general combination of strain rate and flame curvature PDFs to give a single PDF of flame stretch rate, the nature of flame quenching under positive and negative stretch rates, flame responses to changing stretch rates and the effects of flame instabilities.  相似文献

To clarify the role of differential diffusion in highly turbulent premixed flames, a series of turbulent premixed ammonia/hydrogen/air flames were investigated using the NH-PLIF diagnostics. The investigated flames have almost the same laminar burning velocity, SL, but are characterized by different Lewis number, Le, from 0.56 to 1.77. The Karlovitz number, Ka, of these flames ranges from 11 to 1052, and the turbulence intensity, u’/SL, covers from 10 to 156. It is observed that the global consumption speed, ST,GC/SL, of sub-unity Le flames is much larger than that of super-unity Le flames at high Ka, indicating that the differential diffusion plays a significant role in highly turbulent flames. The flame surface density and the area ratio of turbulent flames with different Le are, however, similar under wide turbulent conditions. The stretch factor of sub-unity Le flames is estimated to be significantly larger than that of super-unity Le cases. The enhanced ST,GC of sub-unity Le flames is suggested to be attributed to the promotion of local burning rates by the couple effect of differential diffusion and turbulent flame stretch within the flame brush, rather than the enlargement of flame surface area at high Ka. Furthermore, three correlations for the ST,GC were developed based on Damkohler's second hypothesis with consideration of the Le effect. The correlation of ST,GC/SL ∼ (ReT·Le-2)0.5 is further validated by using small-scale methane/air and large-scale ammonia/air flames at high Ka, where ReT is turbulent Reynolds number. It suggests that the ST,GC is roughly inversely proportional to the Le, and the differential diffusion effect should be included in the theoretical analysis and numerical simulation of highly turbulent flames.  相似文献

Premixed turbulent flames of methane–air and propane–air stabilized on a bunsen type burner were studied using planar Rayleigh scattering and particle image velocimetry. The fuel–air equivalence ratio range was from lean 0.6 to stoichiometric for methane flames, and from 0.7 to stoichiometric for propane flames. The non-dimensional turbulence rms velocity, u′/SL, covered a range from 3 to 24, corresponding to conditions of corrugated flamelets and thin reaction zones regimes. Flame front thickness increased slightly with increasing non-dimensional turbulence rms velocity in both methane and propane flames, although the flame thickening was more prominent in propane flames. The probability density function of curvature showed a Gaussian-like distribution at all turbulence intensities in both methane and propane flames, at all sections of the flame.The value of the term , the product of molecular diffusivity evaluated at reaction zone conditions and the flame front curvature, has been shown to be smaller than the magnitude of the laminar burning velocity. This finding questions the validity of extending the level set formulation, developed for corrugated flames region, into the thin reaction zone regime by increasing the local flame propagation by adding the term to laminar burning velocity.  相似文献

DNS is performed to analyse the effects of Lewis number (Le), density ratio and gravity in stagnating turbulent premixed flames. The results show good agreement with those of Lee and Huh (Combustion and Flame, Vol. 159, 2012, pp. 1576–1591) with respect to the turbulent burning velocity, ST, in terms of turbulent diffusivity, flamelet thickness, mean curvature and displacement speed at the leading edge. In all four stagnating flames studied, a mean tangential strain rate resulting in a mean flamelet thickness smaller than the unstretched laminar flame thickness leads to an increase in ST. A flame cusp of positive curvature involves a superadiabatic burned gas temperature due to diffusive–thermal instability for an Le less than unity. Wrinkling tends to be suppressed at a larger density ratio, not enhanced by hydrodynamic instability, in the stagnating flow configuration. Turbulence is produced, resulting in highly anisotropic turbulence with heavier unburned gas accelerating through a flame brush by Rayleigh–Taylor instability. Results are also provided on brush thickness, flame surface density and conditional velocities in burned and unburned gas and on flame surfaces to represent the internal brush structures for all four test flames.  相似文献

In this study we numerically investigate large scale premixed flames in weakly turbulent flow fields. A large scale flame is classified as such based on a reference hydrodynamic lengthscale being larger than a neutral (cutoff) lengthscale for which the hydrodynamic or Darrieus–Landau (DL) instability is balanced by stabilizing diffusive effects. As a result, DL instability can develop for large scale flames and is inhibited otherwise. Direct numerical simulations of both large scale and small scale three-dimensional, weakly turbulent flames are performed at constant Karlovitz and turbulent Reynolds number, using two paradigmatic configurations, namely a statistically planar flame and a slot Bunsen flame. As expected from linear stability analysis, DL instability induces its characteristic cusp-like corrugation only on large scale flames. We therefore observe significant morphological and topological differences as well as DL-enhanced turbulent flame speeds in large scale flames. Furthermore, we investigate issues related to reaction rate modeling in the context of flame surface density closure. Thicker flame brushes are observed for large scale flames resulting in smaller flame surface densities and overall larger wrinkling factors.  相似文献

A simple, yet representative, burner geometry is used for the investigation of highly swirling turbulent unconfined, non-premixed, flames of natural gas. The burner configuration comprises a ceramic faced bluff-body with a central fuel jet. The bluff-body is surrounded by an annulus that delivers a swirling primary flow of air. The entire burner assembly is housed in a wind tunnel providing a secondary co-flowing stream of air. This hybrid bluff-body/swirl burner configuration stabilizes complex turbulent flames not unlike those found in practical combustors, yet is amenable to modelling because of its well-defined boundary conditions. Full stability characteristics including blow-off limits and comprehensive maps of flame shapes are presented for swirling flames of three different fuel mixtures: compressed natural gas (CNG), CNG–air (1:2 by volume) and CNG–H2 (1:1 by volume).

It is found that with increased fuel flow, flame blow-off mode may change with swirl number, Sg. At low swirl, the flame remains stable at the base but blows off in the neck region further downstream. At higher swirl numbers, the flames peel off completely from the burner's base. Swirling CNG–air flames are distinct in that they only undergo base blow-off. In the low range of swirl number, increasing Sg causes limited improvement in the blow-off limits of the flames investigated and (for a few cases) can even lead to some deterioration over a small intermediate range of Sg. It is only above a certain threshold of swirl that significant improvements in blow-off limits appear. Six flames are selected for further detailed flowfield and composition measurements and these differ in the combination of swirl number, primary axial velocity through the annulus, Us, and bulk fuel jet velocity, Uj. Only velocity field measurements are presented in this paper. A number of flow features are resolved in these flames, which resemble those already associated with non-reacting swirling flows of equivalent swirl obtained with the present burner configuration. Additionally, asymmetric flowfields inherent to some flames are revealed where the fluidic centreline of the flow (defined in the two-dimensional (U–W velocity pair) velocity field by the ?ω? = 0 tangential velocity contour), meanders strongly on either side of the geometric centreline downstream by about one bluff-body diameter. Flow structures revealed by the velocity data are correlated to flame shapes to yield a better understanding of how the velocity field influences the flames physical characteristics.  相似文献

The velocity increase of a weakly turbulent flame of finite thickness is investigated using analytical theory developed in previous papers. The obtained velocity increase depends on the flow parameters: on the turbulent intensity, on the turbulent spectrum and on the characteristic length scale. It also depends on the thermal and chemical properties of the burning matter: thermal expansion, the Markstein number and the temperature dependence of transport coefficients. It is shown that the influence of the finite flame thickness is especially strong close to the resonance point, when the wavelength of the turbulent harmonic is equal to the cut off wavelength of the Darrieus–Landau instability. The velocity increase is almost independent of the Prandtl number. On the contrary, the Markstein number is one of the most important parameters controlling the velocity increase. The relative role of the external turbulence and the Darrieus–Landau instability for the velocity increase is studied for different parameters of the flow and the burning matter. The velocity increase for turbulent flames in methane and propane fuel mixtures is calculated for different values of the equivalence ratio. The present theoretical results are compared with previous experiments on turbulent flames. In order to perform the comparison, the theoretical results of the present paper are extrapolated to the case of a strongly corrugated flame front using the ideas of self-similar flame dynamics. The obtained theoretical results are in a reasonable agreement with the experimental data, taking into account the uncertainties of both the theory and the experiments. It is shown that in many experiments on turbulent flames the Darrieus–Landau instability is more important for the flame velocity than the external turbulence.  相似文献

Much progress has been made in radiative heat transfer modeling with respect to treatment of nongray radiation from both gas-phase species and soot particles, while radiation modeling in turbulent flame simulations is still in its infancy. Aiming at reducing this gap, this paper introduces state-of-the-art models of gas-phase and soot radiation to turbulent flame simulations. The full-spectrum k-distribution method (Modest, M.F., 2003, Journal of Quantitative Spectroscopy & Radiative Transfer, 76, 69–83) is implemented into a three-dimensional unstructured CFD code for nongray radiation modeling. The mixture full-spectrum k-distributions including nongray absorbing soot particles are constructed from a narrow-band k-distribution database created for individual gas-phase species, and an efficient scheme is employed for their construction in CFD simulations. A detailed reaction mechanism including NO x and soot kinetics is used to predict flame structure, and a detailed soot model using a method of moments is employed to determine soot particle size distributions. A spherical-harmonic P1 approximation is invoked to solve the radiative transfer equation. An oxygen-enriched, turbulent, nonpremixed jet flame is simulated, which features large concentrations of gas-phase radiating species and soot particles. Nongray soot modeling is shown to be of greater importance than nongray gas modeling in sooty flame simulations, with gray soot models producing large errors. The nongray treatment of soot strongly influences flame temperatures in the upstream and the flame-tip region and is essential for accurate predictions of NO. The nongray treatment of gases, however, weakly influences upstream flame temperatures and, therefore, has only a small effect on NO predictions. The effect of nongray soot radiation on flame temperature is also substantial in downstream regions where the soot concentration is small. Limitations of the P1 approximation are discussed for the jet flame configuration; the P1 approximation yields large errors in the spatial distribution of the computed radiative heat flux for highly anisotropic radiation fields such as those in flames with localized, near-opaque soot regions.  相似文献

The mixing, reaction progress, and flame front structures of partially premixed flames have been investigated in a gas turbine model combustor using different laser techniques comprising laser Doppler velocimetry for the characterization of the flow field, Raman scattering for simultaneous multi-species and temperature measurements, and planar laser-induced fluorescence of CH for the visualization of the reaction zones. Swirling CH4/air flames with Re numbers between 7500 and 60,000 have been studied to identify the influence of the turbulent flow field on the thermochemical state of the flames and the structures of the CH layers. Turbulence intensities and length scales, as well as the classification of these flames in regime diagrams of turbulent combustion, are addressed. The results indicate that the flames exhibit more characteristics of a diffusion flame (with connected flame zones) than of a uniformly premixed flame.  相似文献

An experimental study on CH4–CO2–air flames at various pressures is conducted by using both laminar and turbulent Bunsen flame configurations. The aim of this research is to contribute to the characterization of fuel lean methane/carbon dioxide/air premixed laminar and turbulent flames at different pressures, by studying laminar and turbulent flame propagation velocities, the flame surface density and the instantaneous flame front wrinkling parameters. PREMIX computations and experimental results indicate a decrease of the laminar flame propagation velocities with increasing CO2 dilution rate. Instantaneous flame images are obtained by Mie scattering tomography. The image analysis shows that although the height of the turbulent flame increases with the CO2 addition rate, the flame structure is quite similar. This implies that the flame wrinkling parameters and flame surface density are indifferent to the CO2 addition. However, the pressure increase has a drastic effect on both parameters. This is also confirmed by a fractal analysis of instantaneous images. It is also observed that the combustion intensity ST/SL increases both with pressure and the CO2 rate. Finally, the mean fuel consumption rate decreases with the CO2 addition rate but increases with the pressure.  相似文献

This study has been mainly motivated to assess computationally and theoretically the conditional moment closure (CMC) model and the transient flamelet model for the simulation of turbulent nonpremixed flames. These two turbulent combustion models are implemented into the unstructured grid finite volume method that efficiently handles physically and geometrically complex turbulent reacting flows. Moreover, the parallel algorithm has been implemented to improve computational efficiency as well as to reduce the memory load of the CMC procedure. Example cases include two turbulent CO/H2/N2 jet flames having different flow timescales and the turbulent nonpremixed H2/CO flame stabilized on an axisymmetric bluff-body burner. The Lagrangian flamelet model and the simplified CMC formulation are applied to the strongly parabolic jet flame calculation. On the other hand, the Eulerian particle flamelet model and full conservative CMC formulation are employed for the bluff-body flame with flow recirculation. Based on the numerical results, a detailed discussion is given for the comparative performances of the two combustion models in terms of the flame structure and NO x formation characteristics.  相似文献

2 H2O2). Laser-induced fluorescence spectra from glyoxal vapor using the same excitation wavelength of 428 nm showed the same strongest lines as the signal from the flame. Glyoxal was visualized in two different modes; two-dimensional imaging and a spatial-spectral mode where spectra were obtained at different spatial positions in the flame simultaneously. For the premixed laminar rich flame it is shown that glyoxal is produced early in the flame, before the signals for C2 and CH appear. For the turbulent non-premixed flames it is shown that glyoxal is produced in a layer on the fuel rich side of the flames. Here the fuel is premixed with ambient air. This layer is thin and has a high spatial resolution. The general trend was that the glyoxal signal appeared in regions with a lower temperature compared with the emission from C2 and CH. The imaging of glyoxal in turbulent acetylene flames is a promising tool for achieving new insight into flame phenomena, as it gives very good structural information on the flame front. Tests so far do not indicate that the detected glyoxal is a result of photo-production. To our knowledge, this is the first detection of glyoxal in flames using laser-induced fluorescence. A finite volume large eddy simulation–conditional moment closure (LES-CMC) numerical framework for premixed combustion developed in a previous studyhas been extended to account for differential diffusion. The non-unity Lewis number CMC transport equation has an additional convective term in sample space proportional to the conditional diffusion of the progress variable, that in turn accounts for diffusion normal to the flame front and curvature-induced effects. Planar laminar simulations are first performed using a spatially homogeneous non-unity Lewis number CMC formulation and validated against physical-space fully resolved reference solutions. The same CMC formulation is subsequently used to numerically investigate the effects of curvature for laminar flames having different effective Lewis numbers: a lean methane–air flame with Leeff = 0.99 and a lean hydrogen–air flame with Leeff = 0.33. Results suggest that curvature does not affect the conditional heat release if the effective Lewis number tends to unity, so that curvature-induced transport may be neglected. Finally, the effect of turbulence on the flame structure is qualitatively analysed using LES-CMC simulations with and without differential diffusion for a turbulent premixed bluff body methane–air flame exhibiting local extinction behaviour. Overall, both the unity and the non-unity computations predict the characteristic M-shaped flame observed experimentally, although some minor differences are identified. The findings suggest that for the high Karlovitz number (from 1 to 10) flame considered, turbulent mixing within the flame weakens the differential transport contribution by reducing the conditional scalar dissipation rate and accordingly the conditional diffusion of the progress variable.  相似文献

The partial quenching structure of turbulent diffusion flames in a turbulent mixing layer is investigated by the method of flame hole dynamics as an effort to develop a prediction model for the turbulent flame lift off. The essence of the flame hole dynamics is derivation of the random walk mapping, from the flame-edge theory, which governs expansion or contraction of the quenching holes initially created by the local quenching events. The numerical simulation for the flame hole dynamics is carried out in two stages. First, a direct numerical simulation is performed for a constant-density fuel–air channel mixing layer to obtain the background turbulent flow and mixing fields, from which a time series of two-dimensional scalar-dissipation-rate array is extracted. Subsequently, a Lagrangian simulation of the flame hole random walk mapping, projected to the scalar dissipation rate array, yields a temporally evolving turbulent extinction process and its statistics on partial quenching characteristics. In particular, the probability of encountering the reacting state, while conditioned with the instantaneous scalar dissipation rate, is examined to reveal that the conditional probability has a sharp transition across the crossover scalar dissipation rate, at which the flame edge changes its direction of propagation. This statistical characteristic implies that the flame edge propagation instead of the local quenching event is the main mechanism controlling the partial quenching events in turbulent flames. In addition, the conditional probability can be approximated by a heavyside function across the crossover scalar dissipation rate.  相似文献

To model the thermo-acoustic excitation of flames in practical combustion systems, it is necessary to know how a turbulent flame front responds to an incident acoustic wave. This will depend partly on the way in which the burning velocity responds to the wave. In this investigation, the response of CH4/air and CH4/H2/air mixtures has been observed in a novel flame stabilisation configuration, in which the premixture of fuel and air is made to decelerate under controlled conditions in a wide-angle diffuser. Control is provided by an annular wall-jet of air and by turbulence generators at the inlet. Ignition from the outlet of the diffuser allows an approximately flat flame to propagate downwards and stabilise at a height that depends on the turbulent burning velocity. When the flow is excited acoustically, the ensemble-averaged height oscillates. The fluctuations in flow velocity and flame height are monitored by phase-locked particle image velocimetry and OH-planar laser induced fluorescence, respectively. The flame stabilised against a lower incident velocity as the acoustic amplitude increased. In addition, at the lowest frequency of 52 Hz, the fluctuations in turbulent burning velocity (as represented by the displacement speed) were out-of-phase with the acoustic velocity. Thus, the rate of displacement of the flame front relative to the flow slowed as the flow accelerated, and so the flame movement was bigger than it would have been if the burning velocity had not responded to the acoustic fluctuation. With an increase in frequency to 119 Hz, the relative flame movement became even larger, although the phase-difference was reduced, so the effect on burning velocity was less dramatic. The addition of hydrogen to the methane, so as to maintain the laminar burning velocity at a lower equivalence ratio, suppressed the response at low amplitude, but at a higher amplitude, the effect was reversed.  相似文献

A single-pulse spontaneous Raman scattering apparatus, based on a flashlamp-pumped dye laser, was used to determine the concentrations of the major species and the temperature in turbulent H2/N2/air jet diffusion flames. The concentrations of nitric oxide were simultaneously measured by Laser-Induced Fluorescence (LIF) after excitation of theA 2 +X 2 transition with a Nd: YAG-pumped dye laser. Some fundamentals of the employed methods, including the calibration procedure, quenching corrections, and accuracy are discussed. Besides a detailed study of the experimental technique, a main goal of the presented investigations was the generation of comprehensive data sets of high accuracy from well-defined turbulent flames which allow for a quantitative comparison with model calculations. Two flames with different fuel dilution and Reynolds numbers were investigated in a pattern of typically 100 measuring locations each comprising 300 single shots. In addition, four flames with different flow velocities but same fuel composition were compared with respect to their temperature and NO concentration profiles. The results show that differential diffusion plays an important role in these flames, especially near the flame base, where the temperature is increased above the adiabatic flame temperature and deviations from adiabatic equilibrium are large.
