The first solvent‐free cationic complexes of the divalent rare‐earth metals, [{RO}REII]+[A]? (REII=YbII, 1 ; EuII, 2 ) and [{LO}REII]+[A]? ([A]?=[H2N{B(C6F5)3}2]?; REII=YbII, 3 ; EuII, 4 ), have been prepared by using highly chelating monoanionic aminoether‐fluoroalkoxide ({RO}?) and aminoether‐phenolate ({LO}?) ligands. Complexes 1 and 2 are structurally related to their alkaline‐earth analogues [{RO}AE]+[A]? (AE=Ca, 5 ; Sr, 6 ). Yet, the two families behave very differently during catalysis of the ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of L ‐lactide (L ‐LA) and trimethylene carbonate (TMC) performed under immortal conditions with excess BnOH as an exogenous chain‐transfer agent. The ligand was found to strongly influence the behavior of the REII complexes during ROP catalysis. The fluoroalkoxide REII catalysts 1 and 2 are not oxidized under ROP conditions, and compare very favorably with their Ca and Sr congeners 5 and 6 in terms of activity (turnover frequency (TOF) in the range 200–400 molL‐LA (molEu h?1)) and control over the parameters during the immortal ROP of L ‐LA (Mn,theorMn,SEC, Mw/Mn<1.05). The EuII‐phenolate 4 provided one of the most effective ROP cationic systems known to date for L ‐LA polymerization, exhibiting high activity (TOF up to 1 880 molL‐LA?(molEu h)?1) and good control (Mw/Mn=1.05). By contrast, upon addition of L ‐LA the YbII‐phenolate 3 immediately oxidizes to inactive REIII species. Yet, the cyclic carbonate TMC was rapidly polymerized by combinations of 3 (or even 1 ) and BnOH, revealing excellent activities (TOF=5000–7000 molTMC?(molEu h)?1) and unusually high control (Mn,theorMn,SEC, Mw/Mn<1.09); under identical conditions, the calcium derivative 5 was entirely inert toward TMC. Based on experimental and kinetic data, a new ligand‐assisted activated monomer ROP mechanism is suggested, in which the so‐called ancillary ligand plays a crucial role in the catalytic cycle. A coherent reaction pathway computed by DFT, compatible with the experimental data, supports the proposed scenario.  相似文献

Ultrasound‐mediated atom transfer radical polymerization (sono‐ATRP) in miniemulsion media is used for the first time for the preparation of complex macromolecular architectures by a facile two‐step synthetic route. Initially, esterification reaction of sucrose or lactulose with α‐bromoisobutyryl bromide (BriBBr) is conducted to receive multifunctional ATRP macroinitiators with 8 initiation sites, followed by polymerization of n‐butyl acrylate (BA) forming arms of the star‐like polymers. The brominated lactulose‐based molecule was examined as an ATRP initiator by determining the activation rate constant (ka) of the catalytic process in the presence of a copper(II) bromide/tris(2‐pyridylmethyl)amine (CuIIBr2/TPMA) catalyst in both organic solvent and for the first time in miniemulsion media, resulting in ka = (1.03 ± 0.01) × 104 M?1 s?1 and ka = (1.16 ± 0.56) × 103 M?1 s?1, respectively. Star‐like macromolecules with a sucrose or lactulose core and poly(n‐butyl acrylate) (PBA) arms were successfully received using different catalyst concentration. Linear kinetics and a well‐defined structure of synthesized polymers reflected by narrow molecular weight distribution (Mw/Mn = 1.46) indicated 105 ppm wt of catalyst loading as concentration to maintain controlled manner of polymerization process. 1H NMR analysis confirms the formation of new sugar‐inspired star‐shaped polymers.  相似文献

Ring‐opening polymerization of cyclic esters was studied using catalysts composed of bulky Lewis acids (LA) and Lewis bases (LB). Controlled polymerization of l ‐lactide (l ‐Lac) was proceeded by Al(C6F5)3·THF in combination with trimesitylphosphine (Mes3P) or triphenylphosphine (Ph3P) using BnOH as an initiator to produce poly(l ‐Lac) with narrow molecular weight distribution (MWD; Mw/Mn = 1.1). Both the LA and the LB were indispensable to promote the polymerization. The molecular weights of the resulting poly(l ‐Lac)s were controlled by the feed monomer to initiator ratio. ε‐Caprolactone (CL) was rapidly polymerized by Al(C6F5)3·THF with or without Mes3P, although the resulting polymer had rather broad MWD (Mw/Mn = 1.7). The CL polymerization by Al(C6F5)3·THF alone at r.t. gave poly(CL) with relatively narrow MWD (Mw/Mn = 1.2). © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Sci., Part A: Polym. Branched and star‐branched polymers were successfully synthesized by the combination of two successive controlled radical polymerization methods. A series of linear and star poly(n‐butyl acrylate)‐co‐poly(2‐(2‐bromoisobutyryloxy) ethyl acrylate) statistical copolymers, P(nBA‐co‐BIEA)x, were first synthesized by nitroxide‐mediated polymerization (NMP at T > 100 °C). The subsequent polymerization of n‐butyl acrylate by single electron transfer‐living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP at T = 25 °C), initiated from the brominated sites of the P(nBA‐co‐BIEA)x copolymer, produced branched or star‐branched poly(n‐butyl acrylate) (PnBA). Both types of polymerizations (NMP and SET‐LRP) exhibited features of a controlled polymerization with linear evolutions of logarithmic conversion versus time and number‐average molar masses versus conversion for final Mn superior to 80,000 g mol?1. The branched and star‐branched architectures with high molar mass and low number of branches were fully characterized by size exclusion chromatography. The Mark–Houwink Sakurada relationship and the analysis of the contraction factor (g′ = ([η]branched/[η]linear)M) confirmed the elaboration of complex PnBA. The zero‐shear viscosities of the linear, star‐shaped, branched, and star‐branched polymers were compared. The modeling of the rheological properties confirmed the synthesis of the branched architectures. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J Polym Sci Part A: Polym Chem, 2012  相似文献

Controllable synthesis of bio‐based polylactide (PLA) diols was realized by the ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of lactide (LA) in the presence of 1,4‐butanediol (BDO) using 1,8‐diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec‐7‐ene (DBU) as an organocatalyst in solvent‐free conditions. The catalytic activity and conversion of LA could reach ∼1 kg g−1 DBU and >97%, respectively, and the polymerization yielded polymers with narrow polydispersity index (PDI) (1.15–1.29). Interestingly, the number average molecular weight (Mn) of the obtained PLA diol was in excellent linear relation with the molar ratio of LA and BDO, and hence can be precisely controlled. The structure of the diol was clearly confirmed by 1H and 13C NMR, FTIR, and MALDI‐TOF mass spectra, proving BDO as an initiation‐transfer agent to participate in the polymerization. Kinetic study of the ROP demonstrates a pseudo‐first‐order kinetic model and a controlled “living” nature. Notably, it is found that the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the diol significantly depends on the Mn. Furthermore, various chain transfer agents and organocatalysts can also be used to successfully synthesize well‐defined PLA diols. Especially, functional bio‐based dihydric alcohols such as 2,5‐furandimethanol (FDMO)‐initiated ROP in this system could result in fully bio‐based PLA diols with functionality. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. In this study, the homopolymerization of 2,2‐dimethyltrimethylene carbonate (DTC) and its copolymerizations with ε‐caprolactone (CL) were carried out in detail using the isothiourea‐based Lewis pairs comprised 2,3,6,7‐tetrahydro‐5H‐thiazolo(3,2‐a)pyrimidine and magnesium halides (MgX2) with benzyl alcohol (BnOH) as the initiator. The copolymerization of DTC and CL via one‐pot addition produced randomly sequenced copolymers. On the other hand, a well‐defined linear poly(ε‐caprolactone)–block–poly(2,2‐dimethyltrimethylene carbonate) (PCL‐b‐PDTC) diblock copolymer was prepared by simple sequential ring‐opening polymerization of CL and DTC. In addition, poly(ω‐pentadecalactone)–block–PDTC diblock copolymer was successfully prepared by the same strategy. Moreover, PDTC–poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)–PDTC triblock copolymer was synthesized in the presence of PEG 2000. The effects of different polymerization conditions on the polymerization reactions have been systematically discussed. The resulting polymers were characterized by the 1H and 13C NMR spectra, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization time‐of‐flight mass spectrometry (MALDI‐ToF MS). The block copolyester structures were confirmed by the 13C NMR spectroscopy and DSC characterizations. These results indicated that the supposed mechanism was a dual catalytic mechanism. The proposed mechanism involved activation of the monomer via coordination to the MgX2, and the initiator alcohol was deprotonated by base. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Polydisperse hyperbranched polyesters were modified for use as novel multifunctional reversible addition–fragmentation chain‐transfer (RAFT) agents. The polyester‐core‐based RAFT agents were subsequently employed to synthesize star polymers of n‐butyl acrylate and styrene with low polydispersity (polydispersity index < 1.3) in a living free‐radical process. Although the polyester‐core‐based RAFT agent mediated polymerization of n‐butyl acrylate displayed a linear evolution of the number‐average molecular weight (Mn) up to high monomer conversions (>70%) and molecular weights [Mn > 140,000 g mol?1, linear poly(methyl methacrylate) equivalents)], the corresponding styrene‐based system reached a maximum molecular weight at low conversions (≈30%, Mn = 45,500 g mol?1, linear polystyrene equivalents). The resulting star polymers were subsequently used as platforms for the preparation of star block copolymers of styrene and n‐butyl acrylate with a polyester core with low polydispersities (polydispersity index < 1.25). The generated polystyrene‐based star polymers were successfully cast into highly regular honeycomb‐structured microarrays. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The polymerization of ?‐caprolactone initiated by two catalyst systems was studied: (1) carbazole‐potassium in the presence of 18‐crown‐6 ether and (2) NdCl3/TBP/TIBA (neodymiumtrichloride/tri‐n‐butyl‐phosphate/triisobutylaluminium) at the molar ratio 1/3/1. For both initiator systems conversion/time plots were determined and the polymers were characterized by IR, GPC and by 1H‐ and 13C?NMR spectroscopy. Polyesters with the highest molecular weight (M n?44 000 g/mol) were obtained for the polymerizations initiated by the carbazole‐potassium/18‐crown‐6 ether system. The features of the polymerization initiated by the carbazole‐potassium/18‐crown‐6 ether system are discussed on the basis of a simple scheme. The nature of this polymerization is non‐living. Zinc complexes supported by tertiary 1,3,5‐triazapenta‐1,3‐dienate ligand (L1) and N ‐benzoyl‐N′ ‐arylbenzamidinate [aryl =2,6‐diisopropylphenyl (L2), phenyl (L3)] ligands have been synthesized and characterized. The reaction of L1H with ZnEt2 affords a mononuclear zinc complex [L1ZnEt] ( 1 ) in good yield. Tetra nuclear zinc complex [(L1)2Zn4O(OAc)4] ( 2 ) is prepared by treating L1H with one equivalent of Zn(OAc)2 in toluene. Further, dinuclear zinc complexes [L2ZnEt]2 ( 3 ) and [L3ZnEt]2 ( 4 ) are obtained in good yields from L2H and L3H with ZnEt2 in toluene respectively. The complexes 1–4 have been characterized by 1H/13C NMR spectroscopy and single crystal X‐ray diffraction studies. All of the complexes have been explored for their catalytic activity toward the ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of ε ‐caprolactone. It has been found that complex 1 is an active catalyst for the polymerization of ε ‐caprolactone in presence of a cocatalyst benzyl alcohol (BnOH). While complex 2 is as active as 1 there is no need for a cocatalyst for the polymerization to proceed. Dinuclear zinc complexes 3 and 4 show very high activity for the ROP of ε ‐caprolactone (CL) and rac ‐lactide (LA) without requiring a cocatalyst. The resultant polymers are found to have very high molecular weight (M n = 296 X 103 g mol−1) and relatively narrow polydispersity index compared to 1 and 2 .  相似文献

A series of para‐phenyl‐substituted α‐diimine nickel complexes, [(2,6‐R2‐4‐PhC6H2N═C(Me))2]NiBr2 (R = iPr ( 1 ); R = Et ( 2 ); R = Me ( 3 ); R = H ( 4 )), were synthesized and characterized. These complexes with systematically varied ligand sterics were used as precatalysts for ethylene polymerization in combination with methylaluminoxane. The results indicated the possibility of catalytic activity, molecular weight and polymer microstructure control through catalyst structures and polymerization temperature. Interestingly, it is possible to tune the catalytic activities ((0.30–2.56) × 106 g (mol Ni·h)?1), polymer molecular weights (Mn = (2.1–28.6) × 104 g mol?1) and branching densities (71–143/1000 C) over a very wide range. The polyethylene branching densities decreased with increasing bulkiness of ligand and decreasing polymerization temperature. Specifically, methyl‐substituted complex 3 showed high activities and produced highly branched amorphous polyethylene (up to 143 branches per 1000 C).  相似文献

A novel tridentate anilido‐aldimine ligand, [o‐C6H4(NHAr)? HC?NCH2CH2NMe2] (Ar = 2,6‐iPr2C6H3, L ‐H, 1 ), has been prepared by the condensation of N, N‐dimethylethylenediamine with one molar equivalent of 2‐fluoro‐benzaldehyde in hexane, followed by the addition of the lithium salt of diisopropylaniline in THF. Magnesium (Mg) and zinc (Zn) complexes supported by the tridentate anilido‐aldimine ligand have been synthesized and structurally characterized. Reaction of L ‐H ( 1 ) with an equivalent amount of MgnBu2 or ZnEt2 produces the monomeric complex [ L MgnBu] ( 2 ) or [ L ZnEt] ( 3 ), respectively. Experimental results show that complexes 2 and 3 are efficient catalysts for ring‐opening polymerization of ε‐caprolactone (CL) and L ‐lactide (LA) in the presence of benzyl alcohol and catalyze the polymerization of ε‐CL and L ‐LA in a controlled fashion yielding polymers with a narrow polydispersity index. In both polymerizations, the activity of Mg complex 2 is higher than that of Zn complex 3 , which is probably due to the higher Lewis acidity and better oxophilic nature of Mg2+ metal. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. We describe herein an original approach for the efficient immortal ring‐opening polymerization (iROP) of trimethylene carbonate (TMC) under mild conditions using dual‐catalyst systems combining a discrete cationic metal complex with a tertiary amine. A series of new zinc and magnesium cationic complexes of the type [{NNO}M]+[anion]? ({NNO}?=2,4‐di‐tert‐butyl‐6‐{[(2′‐dimethylaminoethyl)methylamino]methyl}phenolate; M=Zn, [anion]?=[B(C6F5)4]? ( 2 ), [H2N‐ {B(C6F5)3}2]? ( 3 ), and [EtB(C6F5)3]? ( 4 ); M=Mg, [anion]?=[H2N{B(C6F5)3}2]? ( 7 )) have been prepared from the corresponding neutral compounds [{NNO}ZnEt] ( 1 ) and [{NNO}‐ Mg(nBu)] ( 6 ). Compounds 2 – 4 and 7 exist as free ion pairs, as revealed by 1H, 13C, 19F, and 11B NMR spectroscopy in THF solution, and an X‐ray crystallographic analysis of the bis(THF) adduct of compound 7 , 7? (THF)2. The neutral complexes 1 and 6 , in combination with one equivalent or an excess of benzyl alcohol (BnOH), initiate the rapid iROP of TMC, in bulk or in toluene solution, at 45–60 °C (turnover frequency, TOF, up to 25–30 000 mol(TMC)?mol(Zn)?h?1 for 1 and 220–240 000 mol(TMC)?mol(Mg)?h?1 for 6 ), to afford H‐PTMC‐OBn with controlled macromolecular features. ROP reactions mediated by the cationic systems 2 /BnOH and 7 /BnOH proceeded much more slowly (TOF up to 500 and 3 000 mol(TMC)?mol(Zn or Mg)?h?1 at 110 °C) than those based on the parent neutral compounds 1 /BnOH and 6 /BnOH, respectively. Use of original dual organic/organometallic catalyst systems, obtained by adding 0.2–5 equiv of a tertiary amine such as NEt3 to zinc cationic complexes [{NNO}Zn]+[anion]? ( 2 – 4 ), promoted high activities (TOF up to 18 300 mol(TMC)?mol(Zn)?h?1 at 45 °C) giving H‐PTMC‐OBn with good control over the Mn and Mw/Mn values. Variation of the nature of the anion in 2 – 4 did not significantly affect the performance of these catalyst systems. On the other hand, the dual magnesium‐based catalyst system 7 /NEt3 proved to be poorly effective.  相似文献

Treatment of the chlorides (L2,6‐iPr2Ph)2LnCl (L2,6‐iPr2Ph = [(2,6‐iPr2C6H3)NC(Me)CHC(Me)N(C6H5)]?) with 1 equiv. of NaNH(2,6‐iPr2C6H3) afforded the monoamides (L2,6‐iPr2Ph)2LnNH(2,6‐iPr2C6H3) (Ln = Y ( 1 ), Yb ( 2 )) in good yields. Anhydrous LnCl3 reacted with 2 equiv. of NaL2,6‐iPr2Ph in THF, followed by treatment with 1 equiv. of NaNH(2,6‐iPr2C6H3), giving the analogues (L2,6‐iPr2Ph)2LnNH(2,6‐iPr2C6H3) (Ln = Sm ( 3 ), Nd ( 4 )). Two monoamido complexes stabilized by two L2‐Me ligands, (L2‐Me)2LnNH(2,6‐iPr2C6H3) (L2‐Me = [N(2‐MeC6H4)C(Me)]2CH)?; Ln = Y ( 5 ), Yb ( 6 )), were also synthesized by the latter route. Complexes 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 were fully characterized, including X‐ray crystal structure analyses. Complexes 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 , 5 , 6 are isostructural. The central metal in each complex is ligated by two β‐diketiminato ligands and one amido group in a distorted trigonal bipyramid. All the complexes were found to be highly active in the ring‐opening polymerization of L‐lactide (L‐LA) and ε‐caprolactone (ε‐CL) to give polymers with relatively narrow molar mass distributions. The activity depends on both the central metal and the ligand (Yb < Y < Sm ≈ Nd and L2‐Me < L2,6‐iPr2Ph). Remarkably, the binary 3/benzyl alcohol (BnOH) system exhibited a striking ‘immortal’ nature and proved able to quantitatively convert 5000 equiv. of L‐LA with up to 100 equiv. of BnOH per metal initiator. All the resulting PLAs showed monomodal, narrow distributions (Mw/Mn = 1.06 ? 1.08), with molar mass (Mn) decreasing proportionally with an increasing amount of BnOH. The binary 4/BnOH system also exhibited an ‘immortal’ nature in the polymerization of ε‐CL in toluene. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.  相似文献

The titanium complexes with one ( 1a , 1b , 1c ) and two ( 2a , 2b ) dialkanolamine ligands were used as initiators in the ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of ε‐caprolactone. Titanocanes 1a and 1b initiated living ROP of ε‐caprolactone affording polymers whose number‐average molecular weights (Mn) increased in direct proportion to monomer conversion (Mn ≤ 30,000 g mol?1) in agreement with calculated values, and were inversely proportional to initiator concentration, while the molecular weight distribution stayed narrow throughout the polymerization (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.2 up to 80% monomer conversion). 1H‐NMR and MALDI‐TOF‐MS studies of the obtained poly(ε‐caprolactone)s revealed the presence of an isopropoxy group originated from the initiator at the polymer termini, indicating that the polymerization takes place exclusively at the Ti–OiPr bond of the catalyst. The higher molecular weight polymers (Mn ≤ 70,000 g mol?1) with reasonable MWD (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.6) were synthesized by living ROP of ε‐caprolactone using spirobititanocanes ( 2a , 2b ) and titanocane 1c as initiators. The latter catalysts, according MALDI‐TOF‐MS data, afford poly(ε‐caprolactone)s with almost equal content of α,ω‐dihydroxyl‐ and α‐hydroxyl‐ω(carboxylic acid)‐terminated chains arising due to monomer insertion into “Ti–O” bond of dialkanolamine ligand and from initiation via traces of water, respectively. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A series of well‐defined double hydrophilic graft copolymers containing poly(poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate) (PPEGMEA) backbone and poly(2‐vinylpyridine) (P2VP) side chains were synthesized by successive single electron transfer living radical polymerization (SET‐LRP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The backbone was first prepared by SET‐LRP of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate (PEGMEA) macromonomer using CuBr/tris(2‐(dimethylamino)ethyl)amine as catalytic system. The obtained homopolymer then reacted with lithium diisopropylamide and 2‐chloropropionyl chloride at ?78 °C to afford PPEGMEA‐Cl macroinitiator. poly(poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether acrylate)‐g‐poly(2‐vinylpyridine) double hydrophilic graft copolymers were finally synthesized by. ATRP of 2‐vinylpyridine initiated by PPEGMEA‐Cl macroinitiator at 25 °C using CuCl/hexamethyldiethylenetriamine as catalytic system via the grafting‐ from strategy. The molecular weights of both the backbone and the side chains were controllable and the molecular weight distributions kept relatively narrow (Mw/Mn ≤ 1.40). pH‐Responsive micellization behavior was investigated by 1H NMR, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy and this kind of double hydrophilic graft copolymer aggregated to form micelles with P2VP‐core while pH of the aqueous solution was above 5.0. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Well‐defined amphiphilic polymethylene‐b‐poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly(acrylic acid) (PM‐b‐PCL‐b‐PAA) triblock copolymers were synthesized via a combination of polyhomologation, ring‐opening polymerization (ROP), and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). First, hydroxyl‐terminated polymethylenes (PM‐OH; Mn = 1100 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.09) were produced by polyhomologation followed by oxidation. Then, the PM‐b‐PCL (Mn = 10,000 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.27) diblock copolymers were synthesized via ROP of ε‐caprolactone using PM‐OH as macroinitiator and stannous octanoate (Sn(Oct)2) as a catalyst. Subsequently, the macroinitiator transformed from PM‐b‐PCL in high conversion initiated ATRPs of tert‐butyl acrylate (tBA) to construct PM‐b‐PCL‐b‐PtBA triblock copolymers (Mn = 11,000–14,000 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.24–1.26). Finally, the PM‐b‐PCL‐b‐PAA triblock copolymers were obtained via the hydrolysis of the PtBA segment in PM‐b‐PCL‐b‐PtBA triblock copolymers. The chain structures of all the polymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Porous films of such triblock copolymers were fabricated by static breath‐figure method and observed by scanning electron microscope. In the present study, n‐butyl acrylate macromonomer (BAMM) (Mn = 1900 g mol?1; PDI = 1.96) has been synthesized via a high‐temperature polymerization process. Subsequently, the olefinic termini of the BAMM have been transformed into a diol via a dihydroxylation process using KMnO4 as an oxidizing agent. The OH‐terminated macroinitiator pBA(OH)2 has subsequently been employed for the ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) of ε‐caprolactone via various catalytic systems, that is, organo‐(1,5,7‐triazabicyclo[4.4.0]dec‐5‐ene), metal (tin(II) 2‐ethylhexanoate), and enzymatic catalysis (Novozym® 435). The obtained pBA‐b‐pCL block copolymers and the initiation efficiency of the BAMM macroinitiator have been investigated via size exclusion chromatography (SEC), electrospray ionization–mass spectrometry (ESI‐MS) hyphenated with SEC and liquid chromatography at the critical conditions of both poly(ε‐caprolactone) (pCL) and pBA. The in vitro enzyme catalysis (eROP) approach proved to be the most efficient catalysis system due to minor transesterification side reactions during the polymerization process. However, side reactions such as transesterifications occur in each catalytic system and—while they cannot be suppressed—they can be minimized. The species generated during the eROP process include the desired block copolymer pBA‐b‐pCL as main species as well as pCL homopolymer and residual macroinitiator pBA(OH)2. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. High‐pressure atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of n‐butyl acrylate (BA) is performed in acetonitrile (MeCN) with CuIBr/TPMA [TPMA: tris(2‐pyridylmethyl)‐amine] as the catalyst up to 5 kbar. Increasing either pressure or temperature significantly enhances the rate of polymerization, while retaining control over the polymerization. The polymerizations under high pressure could be efficiently performed with very low levels of Cu catalyst in the absence of any reducing agents. For example, 100 ppm Cu is sufficient to catalyze the polymerization of BA with targeted degree of polymerization (DPT) = 1000. The conversion reached 79% in 3.0 h at 80 °C providing PBA with M n = 112 000, M w/M n = 1.12. Since the initial CuI‐to‐initiator molar ratio is 0.05:1, the molar percentage of terminated chains should remain <5%. For DPT = 10 000 using only 50 ppm Cu catalyst, a polymer with molecular weight M n = 612 000 (DP = 4800) was obtained at 67% conversion.

A series of well‐defined three‐arm star poly(ε‐caprolactone)‐b‐poly(acrylic acid) copolymers having different block lengths were synthesized via the combination of ring‐opening polymerization (ROP) and atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). First, three‐arm star poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) (Mn = 2490–7830 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.19–1.24) were synthesized via ROP of ε‐caprolactone (ε‐CL) using tris(2‐hydroxyethyl)cynuric acid as three‐arm initiator and stannous octoate (Sn(Oct)2) as a catalyst. Subsequently, the three‐arm macroinitiator transformed from such PCL in high conversion initiated ATRPs of tert‐butyl acrylate (tBuA) to construct three‐arm star PCL‐b‐PtBuA copolymers (Mn = 10,900–19,570 g mol?1; Mw/Mn = 1.14–1.23). Finally, the three‐arm star PCL‐b‐PAA copolymer was obtained via the hydrolysis of the PtBuA segment in three‐arm star PCL‐b‐PtBuA copolymers. The chain structures of all the polymers were characterized by gel permeation chromatography, proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The aggregates of three‐arm star PCL‐b‐PAA copolymer were studied by the determination of critical micelles concentration and transmission electron microscope. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
