We study photoproduction of jets and heavy flavors in a polarized collider mode of HERA and in polarized ep collisions at √S ≈ GeV. We examine the sensitivity of the cross sections and their asymmetries to the proton’s polarized gluon distribution and to the completely unknown parton distributions of longitudinally polarized photons.  相似文献

We have performed a Monte Carlo study of photon-gluon interactions at theep collider HERA. We show that it is possible to determine the fractional momentum carried by the gluon (x g) from hadronic informations alone. In particular, in the photoproduction region, where thex andQ 2 are badly measured, this could be the only global physical variable of interest, together with the hadronic invariant mass. The study of these quantities would allow a direct measurement of the gluon density of the proton in the rangex g=2.5×10?3∶5×10?1.  相似文献

For various kinematical domains, the cross section for the diffractive photoproduction of D* mesons at the HERA ep collider is calculated within a model based on perturbation theory. The results obtained by using different models of the Pomeron are compared.  相似文献

We discuss jet reconstruction methods with respect to their suitability forep collisions at HERA and study the expected properties of such jets. The results are based on complete event simulation using current models of jet evolution and hadronization in combination with experimentally tested jet algorithms. The effects of calorimeter resolution are illustrated by explicit simulation of the energy profile and fluctuations in a simplified, but realistic detector.  相似文献

Heavy Majorana neutrinos (N), predicted in various extensions of the standard model, are examined with respect to the present limits on their masses and mixings with ordinary leptons resulting in explicit examples of allowed values of interest for present and planned accelerator energies. The decayNZv is added to the previously available formalism and all dominating branching ratios are calculated. The production of Majorana neutrinos through charged current interactions in theep colliders HERA and LEP ⊕ LHC is investigated using Monte Carlo event simulation. Signals in terms of isolated leptons and jets are found and shown to be effective in suppressing the dominating standard model backgrounds. The discovery limits of such Majorana neutrinos are, for a mixing of 1%, about 160 GeV at HERA and 700 GeV at LEP ⊕ LHC.  相似文献

We present a next-to-leading order calculation for the virtual photoproduction of one and two jets inep collisions. Soft and collinear singularities are extracted using the phase space slicing method. The collinear photon initial state singularity depends logarithmically on the mass of the virtual photon and is absorbed into the virtual photon structure function. An $\overline {MS} $ factorization scheme is defined similarly to the real photon case. Numerical results are presented for HERA conditions using the Snowmass jet definition for inclusive single jet and dijet cross sections. We study the dependence of these cross sections on the transverse energies and rapidities of the jets. Finally, we compare the ratio of the experimentally defined resolved and direct cross sections with recent ZEUS data as a function of the photon virtualityP 2.  相似文献

We investigate the production of a quark-antiquark pair in diffractive photon-proton scattering, approximating soft pomeron exchange by the exchange of two nonperturbative gluons. In deep inelastic scattering at HERA, events with two jets and the scattered proton in the final state are predicted to be observable, with an important contribution from charm production. For photoproduction of light quark jets with high transverse momentum we find that both exchanged gluons must have a large invariant mass, so that the cross section is very small, whereas for charm quarks it is quite appreciable. From our calculation we also extract the quark structure function of the pomeron for the scaling variablez no too close to 0 or 1, finding a strong flavour dependence and a behaviour somewhat harder thanz(1?z) for light quarks.  相似文献

The reaction γp →ωp(ω → π+π?π0 and π0 → γ γ) has been studied in ep interactions using the ZEUS detector at photon-proton centre-of-mass energies between 70 and 90GeV and ∣t∣ < 0.6GeV2, where t is the squared four momentum transferred at the proton vertex. The elastic ω photoproduction cross section has been measured to be σγp → ωp = 1.21 ±0.12 ±0.23 μb. The differential cross section dσγp→ωp/d¦t¦ has an exponential shape e?b∣t∣ with a slope b =10.0 ± 1.2 ± 1.3 GeV?2. The angular distributions of the decay pions are consistent with s-channel helicity conservation. When compared to low energy data, the features of ω photoproduction as measured at HERA energies are in agreement with those of a soft diffractive process. Previous measurements of the ρ0 and ? photoproduction cross sections at HERA show a similar behaviour.  相似文献

We investigate in detail the effect of a direct pomeron coupling to quarks on the production of jets inep scattering with almost real photons. Jet production via a direct pomeron coupling is compared with the resolved-pomeron mechanism. We consider both direct and resolved photoproduction. Rapidity and transverse momentum distributions are calculated and compared with preliminary H1 and ZEUS data.  相似文献

A measurement of the beauty production cross section in ep collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 319 GeV is presented. The data were collected with the H1 detector at the HERA collider in the years 1999-2000. Events are selected by requiring the presence of jets and muons in the final state. Both the long lifetime and the large mass of b-flavoured hadrons are exploited to identify events containing beauty quarks. Differential cross sections are measured in photoproduction, with photon virtualities Q2 < 1 GeV2, and in deep inelastic scattering, where 2 < Q2 < 100 GeV2. The results are compared with perturbative QCD calculations to leading and next-to-leading order. The predictions are found to be somewhat lower than the data.Received: 7 February 2005, Revised: 26 April 2005, Published online: 31 May 2005  相似文献

Jet substructure and differential cross sections for jets produced in the photoproduction and deep inelastic ep scattering regimes have been measured with the ZEUS detector at HERA using an integrated luminosity of 82.2 pb−1. The substructure of jets has been studied in terms of the jet shape and subjet multiplicity for jets with transverse energies . The data are well described by the QCD calculations. The jet shape and subjet multiplicity are used to tag gluon- and quark-initiated jets. Jet cross sections as functions of , jet pseudorapidity, the jet–jet scattering angle, dijet invariant mass and the fraction of the photon energy carried by the dijet system are presented for gluon- and quark-tagged jets. The data exhibit the behaviour expected from the underlying parton dynamics. A value of αs(MZ) of was extracted from the measurements of jet shapes in deep inelastic scattering.  相似文献

Measurements are presented of differential dijet cross sections in diffractive photoproduction (Q2<0.01 GeV2) and deep-inelastic scattering processes (DIS, 4<Q2<80 GeV2). The event topology is given by ep→eXY, in which the system X, containing at least two jets, is separated from a leading low-mass baryonic system Y by a large rapidity gap. The dijet cross sections are compared with NLO QCD predictions based on diffractive parton densities previously obtained from a QCD analysis of inclusive diffractive DIS cross sections by H1. In DIS, the dijet data are well described, supporting the validity of QCD factorisation. The diffractive DIS dijet data are more sensitive to the diffractive gluon density at high fractional parton momentum than the measurements of inclusive diffractive DIS. In photoproduction, the predicted dijet cross section has to be multiplied by a factor of approximately 0.5 for both direct and resolved photon interactions to describe the measurements. The ratio of measured dijet cross section to NLO prediction in photoproduction is a factor 0.5±0.1 smaller than the same ratio in DIS. This suppression is the first clear observation of QCD hard scattering factorisation breaking at HERA. The measurements are also compared to the two soft colour neutralisation models SCI and GAL. The SCI model describes diffractive dijet production in DIS but not in photoproduction. The GAL model fails in both kinematic regions.  相似文献

The HERMES experiment at DESY, Hamburg, collected unique data on Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering (DVCS) utilizing the HERA polarized electron or positron beams with an energy of 27.6 GeV and longitudinally or transversely polarized or unpolarized gas targets (H, D or heavier nuclei). For the last two years of HERA running, a recoil detector was installed to improve the selection of DVCS events by direct measurement of the recoil protons. Recent HERMES results on DVCS off the hydrogen target and on associated processes epepπ0γ and epenπ+γ in the Δ-resonance region obtained with the recoil detector are presented.  相似文献

Dijet events in photon-proton collisions in which there is a large pseudorapidity separation between the two highest jets are studied with the H1 detector at HERA. The inclusive dijet cross sections are measured as functions of the longitudinal momentum fractions of the proton and photon which participate in the production of the jets, and respectively, , the pseudorapidity separation between the two highest jets, and , the total summed transverse energy between the jets. Rapidity gap events are defined as events in which is less than , for varied between 0.5 and 2.0 GeV. The fraction of dijet events with a rapidity gap is measured differentially in , and . An excess of events with rapidity gaps at low values of is observed above the expectation from standard photoproduction processes. This excess can be explained by the exchange of a strongly interacting colour singlet object between the jets. Received: 8 March 2002 / Published online: 5 July 2002  相似文献

The differential cross section dσ/dt for elastic ρ0 photoproduction, γp → ρ0p (ρ0 → π+π?), has been measured in ep interactions at HERA. The squared four-momentum exchanged at the proton vertex, t, has been determined directly by measuring the momentum of the scattered proton using the ZEUS Leading Proton Spectrometer (LPS), a large scale system of silicon micro-strip detectors operating close to the HERA proton beam. The LPS allows the measurement of the momentum of high energy protons scattered at small angles with accuracies of 0.4% for the longitudinal momentum and 5 MeV for the transverse momentum. Photoproduction of ρ0 mesons has been investigated in the interval 0.073 < ¦t¦< 0.40 GeV2, for photon virtualities Q2 < 1 GeV2 and photon-proton centre-of-mass energies W between 50 and 100 GeV. In the measured range, the t distribution exhibits an exponential shape with a slope parameter b = 9.8 ± 0.8 (stat.) ±1.1 (syst.) GeV?2. The use of the LPS eliminates the contamination from events with diffractive dissociation of the proton into low mass states.  相似文献

Measurements are reported of the production of dijet events with a leading neutron in ep interactions at HERA. Differential cross sections for photoproduction and deep inelastic scattering are presented as a function of several kinematic variables. Leading order QCD simulation programs are compared with the measurements. Models in which the real or virtual photon interacts with a parton of an exchanged pion are able to describe the data. Next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculations based on pion exchange are found to be in good agreement with the measured cross sections. The fraction of leading neutron dijet events with respect to all dijet events is also determined. The dijet events with a leading neutron have a lower fraction of resolved photon processes than do the inclusive dijet data.Received: 31 January 2005, Revised: 7 March 2005, Published online: 28 April 2005  相似文献

We calculate in next-to-leading order inclusive cross sections of single-particle production via resolved photons inep collisions at HERA. Transverse-momentum and rapidity distributions are presented and the scale dependence is studied. The results are compared with first experimental data from the H1 Collaboration at HERA.  相似文献

The combined results from ep → νWX, epeWX, and ep → νγX processes at HERA are used to constrain anomalous three-boson couplings. The effective model for anomalous couplings where there is no light Higgs boson and where interactions responsible for the breakdown of electroweak symmetry are strongly coupled is considered. Bounds on the couplings L 9L and L 9R , which parametrize contributions from the anomalous WWγ (WWZ) vertices, attainable from an analysis of the distributions for the processes in question are presented. The results are compared with the bounds resulting from the LEP I and LEP II data. It is shown that the bounds coming from HERA significantly reduce the parameter region allowed by the analysis of the LEP I and LEP II data.  相似文献

We present next-to-leading order calculations of one- and two-jet production in eP collisions at HERA for photon virtualities in the range GeV. Soft and collinear singularities are extracted using the phase space slicing method. Numerical results are presented for HERA conditions with the Snowmass jet definition. The transition between photoproduction and deep-inelastic scattering is investigated in detail. We compare two approaches, the usual deep-inelastic theory, where the virtual photon couples only directly to quarks and antiquarks, and the photoproduction approach, where the photon couples either in the direct way or in the resolved way via the parton constituents of the virtual photon with the proton constituents. Finally we compare with recent H1 data of the dijet rate obtained for various photon virtualities with special attention to the region, in which two jets have equal transverse momenta. The production of heavy flavours inep collisions at the HERA energy is studied using a model based on boson-gluon fusion into a heavy quark-antiquark pair followed by gluon emission and string hadronization. Total cross-sections and dependence on basic kinematical variables are given as well as distributions of the most important variables at both the quark and hadron level, e.g. rapidity and transverse momentum. Charm, bottom and top production is compared and signatures for their separation are discussed in terms of decay muons and global event shape properties.  相似文献
