An analytic approach to the theory of optical defect modes in chiral liquid crystals (CLCs) is developed. The analytic study is facilitated by the choice of the problem parameters. Specifically, an isotropic layer (with the dielectric susceptibility equal to the average CLC dielectric susceptibility) sandwiched between two CLC layers is studied. The chosen model allows eliminating the polarization mixing and reducing the corresponding equations to the equations for light of diffracting polarization only. The dispersion equation relating the defect mode (DM) frequency to the isotropic layer thickness and an analytic expression for the field distribution in the DM structure are obtained and the corresponding dependences are plotted for some values of the DM structure parameters. Analytic expressions for the transmission and reflection coefficients of the DM structure (CLC-defect layer-CLC) are presented and analyzed for nonabsorbing, absorbing, and amplifying CLCs. The anomalously strong light absorption effect at the DM frequency is revealed. The limit case of infinitely thick CLC layers is considered in detail. It is shown that for distributed feedback lasing in a defect structure, adjusting the lasing frequency to the DM frequency results in a significant decrease in the lasing threshold. The DM dispersion equations are solved numerically for typical values of the relevant parameters. Our approach helps clarify the physics of the optical DMs in CLCs and completely agrees with the corresponding results of the previous numerical investigations.  相似文献

The localized optical modes in spiral photonic liquid crystals are theoretically studied for the certainty at the example of chiral liquid crystals (CLCs) for the case of CLC with an anisotropic local absorption. The model adopted here (absence of dielectric interfaces in the structures under investigation) makes it possible to get rid of mixing of polarizations on the surfaces of the CLC layer and of the defect structure and to reduce the corresponding equations to only the equations for light with polarization diffracting in the CLC. The dispersion equations determining connection of the edge mode (EM) and defect mode (DM) frequencies with the CLC layer parameters (anisotropy of local absorption, CLC order parameter) and other parameters of the DMS are obtained. Analytic expressions for the transmission and reflection coefficients of CLC layer and DMS for the case of CLC with an anisotropic local absorption are presented and analyzed. It is shown that the CLC layers with locally anisotropic absorption reduce the EM and DM lifetimes (and increase the lasing threshold) in the way different from the case of CLC with an isotropic local absorption. Due to the Borrmann effect revealing of which is different at the opposite stop-band edges in the case of CLC layers with an anisotropic local absorption the EM life-times for the EM frequencies at the opposite stop-bands edges may be significantly different. The options of experimental observations of the theoretically revealed phenomena are briefly discussed.  相似文献

The analytic study is facilitated by the choice of the problem parameters related to the dielectric properties of the studied structures. The chosen models allow eliminating polarization mixing at the external surfaces of the studied structures. The dispersion equations determining the relation of the defect mode (DM) frequency to the dielectric characteristics of an isotropic, birefringent and absorbing (amplifying) defect layer and its thickness are obtained. Analytic expressions for the transmission and reflection coefficients of the defect mode structure (DMS) (photonic liquid crystal-active defect layer-photonic liquid crystal) are presented and analyzed. The effect of anomalously strong light absorption at the defect mode frequency for an absorbing defect layer is discussed. It is shown that in a distributed feed-back lasing at the DMS with an amplifying defect layer, adjusting the lasing frequency to the DM frequency results in a significant decrease in the lasing threshold and the threshold gain decreases as the defect layer thickness increases. It is found that, generally speaking, the layer birefringence and dielectric jumps at the interfaces of the defect layer and photonic liquid crystal reduce the DM lifetime in comparison with the DMS with an isotropic defect layer without dielectric jumps at the interfaces. Correspondingly, generally speaking, the effect of anomalously strong light absorption at the defect mode frequency and the decrease in the lasing threshold are not so pronounced as in the case of the DMS with an isotropic defect layer without dielectric jumps at the interfaces. The case of a DMS with a low defect layer birefringence and sufficiently large dielectric jumps are studied in detail. The options of effectively influencing the DM parameters by changing the defect layer dielectric properties, and the birefringence in particular, are discussed.  相似文献

We study the lasing eigenvalue problems for a periodic open optical resonator made of an infinite grating of circular dielectric cylinders standing in free space, in the E- and H-polarization modes. If possessing a "negative-absorption" refractive index, such cylinders model a chain of quantum wires made of the gain material under pumping. The initial-guess values for the lasing frequencies are provided by the plane-wave scattering problems. We demonstrate a new effect: the existence of specific grating eigenmodes that have a low threshold of lasing even if the wires are optically very thin.  相似文献

Distributed feedback microstructures play a fundamental role in confining and manipulating light to obtain lasing in media with gain. Here, we present an innovative array of organic, color-tunable microlasers which are intrinsically phase locked. Dye-doped helixed liquid crystals were embedded within periodic, polymeric microchannels sculptured by light through a single-step process. The helical superstructure was oriented along the microchannels; the lasing was observed along the same direction at the red edge of the stop band. Several physical and technological advantages arise from this engineered heterostructure: a high quality factor of the cavity, ultralow lasing threshold, and thermal and electric control of the lasing wavelength and emission intensity. This level of integration of guest-host systems, embedded in artificially patterned small sized structures, might lead to new photonic chip architectures.  相似文献

采用轴向隐失波激励增益的方式,使激光增益区域局限在光纤回音壁模式的模场区域内,显著地降低了回音壁模式光纤激光辐射的抽运阈值,由此形成一种低阈值的回音壁模式光纤激光器.在微焦耳量级的低抽运能量条件下,用回音壁模式光纤激光器研究了激光染料的浓度效应.实验结果表明,随着激光染料浓度的增加,回音壁模式激光辐射的波长向长波方向移动,激光波长范围变宽.用回音壁模式染料激光的四能级模型得到激光上能级和所有能级上的分子数比值γ(λ)曲线后,很好地解释了实验结果.低抽运阈值的回音壁模式光纤激光器,为研究液体激光现象提供了极为便利的手段.  相似文献

Specific features of the defect modes of cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) with an isotropic defect, as well as their photonic density of states, Q factor, and emission, have been investigated. The effect of the thicknesses of the defect layer and the system as a whole, the position of the defect layer, and the dielectric boundaries on the features of the defect modes have been analyzed. It is shown that when the CLC layer is thin the density of states and emission intensity are maximum for the defect mode, whereas when the CLC layer is thick, these peaks are observed at the edges of the photonic band gap. Similarly, when the gain is low, the density of states and emission intensity are maximum for the defect mode, whereas at high gains these peaks are also observed at the edges of the photonic band gap. The possibilities of low-threshold lasing and obtaining high-Q microcavities have been investigated.  相似文献

利用激光全息光刻技术, 在重铬酸盐明胶 感光材料中制备了掺杂有机染料的层状光子晶体. 在532 nm纳秒脉冲激光激励下, 样品的荧光光谱表现出良好的带隙特征; 随着抽运能量的增加, 在荧光带隙带边位置获得了激射光, 并进一步研究了光子晶体的带边位置与染料荧光峰的匹配对激射的影响.带边位置越靠近染料的荧光峰, 激射阈值越低, 反之则不易产生激射.该研究为超低阈值光子晶体激光器的发展提供了思路和方法. 关键词: 全息光刻 光子晶体 荧光带隙 低阈值激射  相似文献

The dye 1,4-bis(9-ethyl-3-carbazovinylene)-2-methoxy-5-(2′-ethyl-hexyloxy)-benzene (abbreviated 2CzV-MEH-B) dissolved in tetrahydrofuran (THF) and as neat film is characterised by optical absorption and emission spectroscopy. The absorption and stimulated emission cross-section spectra, the fluorescence quantum distributions, fluorescence quantum yields, degrees of fluorescence polarisation, and fluorescence lifetimes are determined. A lasing characterisation is carried out by pumping with single second harmonic pulses of a mode-locked ruby laser (wavelength 347.15 nm, pulse duration 35 ps). The excited-state absorption at the pump laser wavelength is determined by saturable absorption measurements. Laser oscillation of the dye in THF in a rectangular cell is achieved by transverse pumping using the uncoated cell windows for light feedback. From the emission behaviour around threshold the excited-state absorption cross-section spectrum in the laser active spectral region is extracted. The wave-guided travelling-wave lasing behaviour of the dye as neat film is studied by analysis of the amplification of the transverse pumped spontaneous emission. Surface emitting distributed-feedback lasing was achieved with a neat film on corrugated second-order periodic gratings.  相似文献

A generalized response (dielectric) function for twisted electrostatic waves is derived for an un‐magnetized self‐gravitating thermal dusty plasma, whose constituents are the Boltzmann‐distributed electrons and positive ions in the presence of negatively charged micrometre‐sized massive dust particulates. For this purpose, a set of Vlasov–Poisson coupled equations is solved along with the perturbed Laguerre–Gauss distribution function, as well as the electrostatic and gravitational potentials in the limit of paraxial approximation. For plane wave solution, the wavefronts of the dust‐acoustic (DA ) wave are assumed to have a constant phase with electric and gravitational field lines propagating straight along the propagation axis. On the other hand, non‐planar wave solutions show helical (twisted) wavefronts, in which field lines spiral around the propagation axis owing to the azimuthal velocity component to account for the finite orbital angular momentum (OAM ) states. The dispersion relation and damping rate for twisted DA waves are studied both analytically and numerically. It is shown that finite OAM states, the dust to electron temperature ratio, and dust self‐gravitation effects significantly affect the linear dispersion and Landau damping frequencies. In particular, the phase speed of twisted DA waves is reduced with the variation of the twist parameter η (= k /lqϕ ), dust concentration δ (= nd 0/ni 0), and dust self‐gravitation α (= ωJd /ωpd ). The relevance of our findings to interstellar dust clouds is also discussed for micrometre‐sized massive dust grains.  相似文献

Ray-tracing method is used to simulate the distribution of absorption in crystal rod for different side-pumping configuration. The distribution of pumping power and absorption efficiency is compared, and the numerical results are presented. The results show that the more uniform pumping and the higher absorption coefficient are obtained with a diffuse cavity. And the method of the slow axis of laser diode stack perpendicular to the axis of lasing gives the higher central pumping density.  相似文献

根据实验制备的钠硼铝硅酸盐PbSe量子点玻璃及其透射电子显微镜(TEM)图、吸收谱和发射谱,计算机数值模拟了以PbSe量子点作为激活增益介质的红外单模光纤激光。应用遗传算法,通过数值求解粒子数速率方程和激光谐振腔振荡方程,优化计算了量子点光纤激光器(QDFL)的最佳抽运波长、光纤长度、掺杂浓度及出射镜反射率。结果表明:饱和抽运功率为2 W,在1676nm激光波长处,QDFL最大输出功率可达1.36 W,抽运效率达68%。与通常的掺稀土离子(Yb3+、Er3+)的光纤激光器相比,QDFL具有抽运效率高、激励阈值低、掺杂密度可调、光纤饱和长度短等特点。由于量子点辐射波长的尺寸依赖特性,容易形成多波长激射或波长可调的新型激光器。  相似文献

The density of states approach [J. Bendickson et al., Phys. Rev. E 53, 4107 (1996)] was applied to a simple dielectric plate and a formula was found for the spectrum of the threshold gain for lasing. Then the validity of the same approach was verified for cholesteric liquid crystals (CLC) having helical structure. For non-absorbing CLC, the dependences were found of the minimum threshold gain on the layer thickness and the optical anisotropy of the material. The contribution of the dye absorption was discussed separately. The experimental data presented are in good agreement with threshold gain calculations.  相似文献

Lasers with light-induced two-dimensional distributed feedback are investigated, in which a two-dimensional grating of the gain of the active medium, induced by several pump laser beams, is used to ensure the coupling of four partial wave flows propagating in mutually orthogonal directions. The starting conditions and nonlinear dynamics of lasers with a new kind of a two-dimensionally distributed feedback are analyzed within the semiclassical approximation. Self-similarity conditions are found, ensuring the scaling of the laser parameters under the conditions of maintenance of steady-state lasing regime upon an increase in the active region size, which is accompanied by an increase in the integrated output power. The effect of diffusion of nonequilibrium carriers on the lasing process and threshold conditions is analyzed.  相似文献

This paper presents a theoretical investigation of a laser oscillator and a laser switch, using a hetero-structure made of two one-dimensional photonic crystals with active materials and a period ratio of r (r > 1). Lasing is achieved near frequencies where the upper and lower band edges of the adjacent photonic crystals overlap (i.e., band edge resonance). Near the band edge resonance, two modes of laser oscillations are found; mode A – the threshold gain increases with r and mode B – the threshold gain decreases with r. By assuming a homogenously broadened gain medium at any particular r, only one of the two modes is able to participate in lasing. We also found the lasing mode is switchable upon a very small alteration in the refractive index of the materials present in the photonic crystal. The results of the paper will be very useful for designing a new class of tunable lasers and high sensitivity sensors.  相似文献

A dielectric-loaded, ridged helical groove slow-wave structure for the millimeter wave traveling wave tube is presented in this paper. The effects of the groove depth, ridge dimensions and the dielectric permitivety on the wave propagating properties and the interaction impedance are investigated in detail. From the analysis, it is indicated that for broader band amplification in a helical groove travelling wave tube, a ridged helical structure with shallow groove and loaded by dielectric with proper relative permitivety may be applied.  相似文献

The dielectric optical wave guide is finding growing attention at millimeter wave frequencies. However the dielectric optical waveguide radiates at bends and thus transmission loss increases. These radiations are in the outword direction of bends. This output radiation at output bends arises due to change in phase velocities of the propagating wave at the centre of the dielectric guide and the phase velocity at the outer surface of the dielectric guide. A unique methiod is suggested to avoid these radiation losses.Experimental results are also shown at microwave frequencies.  相似文献

Investigations of UV radiation spectra of powdered zinc oxide and its unordered film were conducted. The samples were pumped by 3-rd harmonics of the two-stage Nd:YAG-laser (λ=355 nm) with pulse duration ∼10 ns. Maximum density of energy of pumping pulses was about 150 mJ/cm2. With some of our samples, we achieved lasing. The threshold values of the pumping energy density occurred higher than those under picosecond pumping approximately for one-two orders of magnitude. It was shown that the threshold of lasing and the character of lasing spectra depend on the morphology of particles forming a powder. The long-wavelength shift of the maximum of lasing spectra with a rise of the pumping was observed. It was interpreted as a result of participation of electron–hole plasma recombination in the process of lasing. A chaotic character of lasing spectra was observed and partially analyzed. The characteristics of optical waves in amplifying dielectric periodic nanostructures are studied. The formula for the dependence of the wave number on frequency, which comprises a photonic band gap and is valid for structures possessing a complex dielectric function, is obtained. It is shown that the gain is anomalously high at frequencies residing in the photonic band gap.  相似文献

In this article, a broadband metamaterial microwave absorber on a low-cost FR-4 Epoxy substrate is proposed. The unit cell of the absorber consists of a staircase shape metallic patch placed on the top of the metal-backed ultrathin dielectric substrate having a thickness of 1.9 mm (0.07 λ0). The absorption of more than 90% is achieved with this proposed low profile single-layer microwave absorber throughout the operation band from 8.86 to 15.5 GHz. The performance is analyzed for different values of incident angle, polarization angle, substrate height, and dielectric constant. The surface current and the power loss density at the top and bottom planes at the two absorption peaks of 9.46 and 13.90 GHz are also analyzed to elaborate the absorption mechanism of the structure. Experimental result closely follows the simulated one. The broadband characteristics of the design with relative absorption bandwidth (RAB) of 54.51% at both TE and TM polarizations of incident wave for a wide incident angles makes it versatile for applications in the X and Ku bands of microwave frequencies. The proposed work is very compact (unit cell size: 0.22 λ0) with ultrathin substrate height (0.07 λ0) and giving RAB performance of 54.51% comparable with that of others. Thus with this single-layer low-cost substrate material a broadband absorber is achieved.  相似文献
