Troponoid esters and amides connected with cholest-5-ene-3β-carboxylic acid have been synthesized to characterize their mesomorphic properties and to compare them with those of the corresponding benzenoids. 5-Alkoxytroponyl esters and amides with a long alkoxy group exhibited a twist grain boundary A* phase, as well as chiral nematic and smectic A* (SmA*) phases. The corresponding benzenoid esters exhibit SmA* and blue phases and the benzenoid amides only a SmA* phase. The differences between the mesomorphic properties are discussed in terms of the structural features of the core.  相似文献

Nine members of the octa-n-alkanoyloxy-9,10-anthraquinone series, ranging from octanoyloxy (n = 8) to hexadecanoyloxy (n = 16) (where n is the number of carbon atoms per chain), were prepared and their mesomorphic properties studied by differential scanning calorimetry and optical microscopy. All the compounds studied are mesomorphic with the higher homologues exhibiting two (for n ≧ 12) or even three (for n ≧ 14) columnar mesophases. For n = 8 to 11, the phase sequence is C-DB-I, where DB is an optically biaxial mesophase with a two-dimensional pgg symmetry. For n = 12, 13, the phase sequence is C-M3-DB-I, where M3 is a highly ordered phase whose structure has not been identified. Finally for n = 14 to 16, the phase sequence is C-M3-DB-DA-I, where DA is an hexagonal phase. In all cases, the phases change from high to low order with increasing temperature and all transitions are first order. Compared with the corresponding hexa-substituted naphthoquinones the present series generates larger mesomorphic ranges and the higher homologues exhibit a uniaxial phase which is lacking in the hexa-substituted series. The increase in volume occupied by the aliphatic chains in the octa-substituted series is evidently sufficient to reduce the interaction between the aromatic cores of the different columns to permit the stability of a uniaxial phase.  相似文献

Novel derivative series of the well known bent-shaped P-n-O-PIMB liquid crystal mesogens, referred to as '4Br-P-n-O-PIMB', '4Cl-P-n-O-PIMB' and '5Cl-P-n-O-PIMB', having halogen atoms substituted on the phenyl ring in the central core, were synthesized by solution phase parallel synthesis based on a combinatorial approach. The mesomorphic behaviour and physical properties of all the new compounds were studied by means of optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray and circular dichroism spectroscopy. We found interesting transitional behaviour for the 4Br-P-n-O-PIMB homologous series. The homologues with alkyl tails having carbon numbers of n=3-10, 12, 14 exhibit rather complicated mesomorphic behaviour, which is strongly sensitive to n. The chiral fluid smectic B2 phase with SmCAPA structure and unidentified smectic Bx phase were observed in the homologues with n=9, 10, 12, 14 and n=3-5, respectively. Interestingly, every member exhibits frustrated and/or helical ordered phases at low temperatures, designated as X1, X2, and X3 phases, which result from a spontaneous escape from a macroscopic polarization. The mesomorphic behaviour and mesophase structures differ remarkably from those of the parent P-n-O-PIMB homologues, suggesting that substitution of the halogen atoms at the central core essentially creates a particular interaction between molecules.  相似文献

Investigations of thermotropic phase transitions performed on organocyclosiloxanes [PhSi(O)OSiR]6, where R is Me3, Me2(CH2Cl) or Me2(CH≃CH2), have revealed that all these hexamers are mesomorphic compounds. The hexamers exhibit uncommon polymesomorphic behaviour forming two quite different mesomorphic structures. The molecular arrangement in the low temperature (LT) modification is characterized by two-dimensional (2D) long-range order with hexagonal packing. The X-ray diffraction pattern and peculiarities of molecular packing in the crystal lead us to suggest that the LT-mesophase is columnar, presumably of the Colhd type. The LT-mesophase is formed by dimeric moieties, which associate with each other in column-like substructures, the ring planes not orthogonal to the stack axis. The high temperature (HT) mesophase is a plastic crystal (3D-order), where molecules take up positions in a face-centred cubic lattice. This is a very uncommon example of thermal behaviour for plastic crystals that provides a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between plastic crystalline and liquid crystalline mesomorphic behaviour. The thermal and structural properties of the mesophases depend upon the type of side groups of the hexamers. The size of the ring also affects the phase behaviour and the mesomorphic structure. This conclusion is consistent with data obtained by us earlier for cyclotetrasiloxanes.  相似文献

Novel chiral amides (Ia-Ie, II) and azo compounds (III, IV) with a 1,3,4-thiadiazole unit in the rigid core were synthesized and their liquid crystalline properties investigated by polarizing optical microscopy and differential scanning calorimetry. The amides Ia-Ie contain a chiral alkoxy chain derived from (R)-2-octanol and an achiral chain varying from 6 to 10 carbon atoms at the end of the rigid core. In amide II one of the terminal group is a chiral alkoxy chain derived from (S)-isoleucine and the other terminal substituent is an achiral n-decyloxy chain. Azo compounds III and IV contain an achiral n-decyloxy chain and a chiral alkoxy chain derived from (R)-2-octanol and (S)-isoleucine, respectively, at the end of the rigid core. The first homologue in the series of amides (Ia) exhibits enantiotropic smectic X (SmX)-chiral nematic (N*) dimorphism and the homologues Ib-Ie display enantiotropic SmX-chiral smectic C (SmC*)-N* mesomorphism. Amide II displays an enantiotropic smectic A phase. The azo compounds III and IV do not show smectic order and only an enantiotropic N* phase was observed. Thus, the mesomorphic behaviour depends on the nature of the central linkage and on the nature of the chiral alkoxy chain.  相似文献

Several series of new benzofused thieno[3,2-b]furan- and thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-based derivatives have been synthesized and their mesomorphic properties investigated. All the studied compounds exhibit a SmC* phase with very wide temperature interval. Additionally, some types of the compounds show the cholesteric, SmA or blue phase. In the ferroelectric SmC* phase we evaluated physical properties of relevance for possible applications.  相似文献

A series of N-[4'-(dodecyloxy)resorcylidene]-4-(RO*)-anilines (HLn n = 1, R*O = (-)-cis-myrtanyl; n = 2, R*O = (-)-menthyl; n = 3, R*O = S-(-)-β-citronellyl; n = 4, R*O = R-(-)-2-octyl) has been synthesized and the mesomorphic properties investigated. These ligands are able to chelate a metal atom; accordingly three different series of palladium complexes, [(Ln)Pd(Ln)], [(Ln)Pd(Azoxy-6)] and [(L3)Pd(Ph-Pyn)] (where Azoxy-6 and PhPyn are cyclopalladated 4,4'-dihexyloxyazoxybenzene and 5-substituted-2-(4-substituted-phenyl)pyrimidine, respectively) have been prepared. The mesogenic HL3 and HL4 ligands exhibit a S*C phase, retained in [(L3)Pd(L3)], which changes to a cholesteric phase in [(L4)Pd(L4)] and becomes the more ordered S*H phase in the [(Ln)Pd(Azoxy-6)] (n = 3,4) derivatives. In contrast, in the [(L3)Pd(Ph-Pyn)] compounds the mesomorphic phase is a SA phase.  相似文献

The synthesis and liquid crystalline properties of novel achiral amides (Ia–g, IIa–g and IVa,b), achiral Schiff's bases (IIIa–g and Va–g), chiral amides (VI, VII) and chiral Schiff's bases (VIII–XI) incorporating a 1,3,4-oxadiazole ring are reported. All amides of the series I and II display an enantiotropic smectic A phase. The amide IVa,b did not show mesomorphic properties. Amides of the series Ia–g and IIa–g contain a flexible n-tetradecylthio chain, the other terminal substituent is an n-alkoxy chain and n-alkyl chain, respectively (n?=?4–10) and the 1,3,4-oxadiazole is in the terminal rigid core. Amides Ia–g have broader mesomorphic range and higher thermal stability than the corresponding amides IIa–g. Amides IVa,d contain the 1,3,4-oxadiazole ring in the centre of the rigid core and two flexible alkoxy chains as flexible terminal substituents. Thus, the mesomorphic properties are favoured if 1,3,4-oxadiazole is shifted to a terminal position of the rigid core. Schiff's bases IIIa–g display an enantiotropic dimorphism smectic C–smectic A. Schiff's bases IIIa–g have a broader mesomorphic range than the analogous amides Ia–g. Schiff's bases Va–g exhibit a dimorphism smectic A–nematic, and in contrast to this the analogous amide IVa,b did not show mesomorphism. The chiral amides VI and VII and chiral Schiff's bases X and XI did not show mesomorphic properties and only the chiral Schiff's bases VIII and IX display a chiral smectic C phase in a short mesomorphic range. A density functional theory theoretical study at the B3LYP/6–311++G(d,p) level was performed in order to analyse the structural features that must be related with the mesomorphic behaviour of the reported compounds.  相似文献

The synthesis and mesomorphic properties of a new series of liquid crystals derived from quinoline with an imine central bond is described. All compounds exhibit mesophase ranges greater than 50°C. The lower homologues (n = 4-6) show trimorphism Sc-Sa-N (for n = 4, the Sc phase is monotropic). The higher homologues (n = 7-10) show nematic and smectic C phases. Compared to the styrylquinoline analogues the imine bond gives rise to similar liquid crystal phase ranges but lower melting points.  相似文献

An homologous series of 2,3,5,6,8,9-hexa-n-alkanoyloxyphenylbenzo (1,2b; 3,4b';5,6b')trisfurans has been synthezised. The synthesis and mesomorphic properties are described and compared with those of other disc-like systems. These derivatives exhibit the relatively uncommon hexagonal ordered columnar phase Dho. One hexa-n-alkoxybenzoyloxy derivative has also been prepared, it provides a new example of the ND lenticular nematic phase.  相似文献

We have synthesized a new series of polyphenylene compounds with a pyridine ring, 2-(4-n-alkoxyphenyl)-5-methylpyridines (CH3C5H3NC6H4OCiH2i1) (1a-i; the carbon number, i, of the alkoxy group is 1-9), and studied their phase transitions and mesogenicity using DSC and polarizing microscopy. In the homologous series of 1a-i, no mesomorphic phase appeared for i=1-5 and only a monotropic nematic phase was observed for i=6-9. The mesomorphic potential is relatively weaker for the 1a-i than for the 2a-i and 3a-i homologues, which are pyridine-containing three- and four-ring similar systems. This lowering of the mesogenicity may be due to the lack of a phenyl ring between the pyridine ring and the methyl group in the 1a-i homologues.  相似文献

The synthesis and liquid crystalline properties of a new series of amides (series 2a-f , 3a-d and 4a-d ) incorporating pyridine and 1,3,4-thiadiazole rings are reported. No homologues of the series 2 show mesomorphic properties. In the series 3 only the highest homologues ( 3d ) displays an enantiotropic SmA mesophase; the compound 3c exhibits a monotropic SmA mesophase, and the homologues 3a , b display no liquid crystal properties. The amides 4b-d display an enantiotropic SmA phases and the first homologue ( 4a ) exhibit only crystalisotropic transition. These series are compared with previously reported Schiff's bases and amide analogues. A structural study by AM1 semi-empirical calculation is also described.  相似文献

A series of trifluoro-substituted benzoate derivatives: (S)-1-ethylheptyl 4-[4-(4-alkyloxy-3- fluorobenzoyloxy)-3-fluorobenzoyloxy]-2-fluorobenzoates is reported. The short chain members (n = 8 to n = 11) display a direct SmC*A-SmA transition, whereas for longer chains a SmC* phase appears, but no ferrielectric phases are present, and a direct SmCA*-SmC* transition is obtained. The mesomorphic properties were studied by optical microscopy and DSC, and by electro-optical, helical pitch and optical rotatory power measurements. The effect of the number and position of the fluoro substituents, and the influence of the chiral moiety on the mesomorphic behaviour are discussed.  相似文献

The mesomorphic properties of the N*, S*c and higher ordered smectic phases have been investigated for a homologous series of 4-[(S)-2-chlor-3-methylbutanoyloxy]-4'-(4-n-alkyloxy-benzoyloxy)biphenyls. They have been characterized by optical texture observation, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), small angle X-ray scattering and electro-optic measurements. The compounds exhibit a strongly twisted cholesteric phase and smectic phases with large spontaneous polarization and tilt angle values. One or two higher ordered, monotropic smectic phases were found which significantly differ in their rotational viscosity.  相似文献

Novel ferroelectric liquid crystalline compounds, containing the (S)-2-methyl-l -butyl (4-hydroxybiphenyl-4'-carbonyloxy)biphenyl-4-carboxylate mesogenic group and an oligooxyethylene spacer, were synthesized. The mesomorphic properties of these materials were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), optical polarizing microscopy (POM) and powder X-ray diffraction measurement. The results indicate that all members of this series exhibit a very broad temperature mesophase range (reaching a maximum around 210°C) including a blue phase (BP), cholesteric (Ch), twist grain boundary A (TGBA), chiral smectic C (S*c), and smectic X (Sx) phases. The mesomorphic properties are discussed and a comparison is made with three phenyl rings of ester core analogues.  相似文献

Homologous series of liquid crystalline azoesters and azomethine esters consisting of a (S)-1-methylpropyl group attached in one of the terminal positions have been synthesized and thermally characterized. All twenty-four derivatives from both series, namely, the 4-(4-n-alkoxybenzoyloxy)-4'-1-(S)-methylpropylazobenzenes and 4-(4-n-alkoxybenzoyloxy)benzylidene-4'-1-(S)-methylpropylanilines exhibit mesomorphism. The lower members of the homologous series show a chiral nematic phase while the higher members show smectic C*, smectic A as well as chiral nematic mesophases. The homologues have been characterized using IR, NMR and UV-Visible, spectroscopies, X-ray diffraction and DSC. Their mesomorphic properties are compared with those of structurally related homologous series.  相似文献

A new series of 1,1'-disubstituted ferrocene compounds of the type [(η5-C5H4(CH2)nOC6H4C6H4CN]2Fe (3a-d, n = 5, 6, 8, 11) incorporating a variable length alkyloxy cyanobiphenyl unit has been prepared and their mesomorphic properties have been investigated. Compounds 3b, c and d exhibit a thermotropic smectic C phase and 3c also exhibits a monotropic smectic A phase over a fairly wide range near ambient temperature.  相似文献

A new optically active chiral moiety, (S)-1-propyloxy-2-propanol, was designed and synthesized by the treatment of 1-propanol with (S)-propylene oxide under basic conditions. Its derivatives, the (R)-1-propyloxy-2-propyl 4-[4-(4-alkoxyphenyl)phenoyloxy]benzoates, PPmPPB (m = 8-12), were prepared for the investigation of mesomorphic properties. All of the chiral materials displayed enantiotropic SmA* and SmC* phases, and the shorter alkyl chain members (m = 8-11) displayed an additional unidentified SmX* phase. The switching current, spontaneous polarization, tilt angle, dielectric constant and electro-optical response for the materials in the ferroelectric SmC* phase were measured. The electro-optic responses in polyimide film-coated homogeneously aligned cells exhibit thresholdless, V-shaped switching in the ferroelectric phase.  相似文献

(S)-2-[1-(2-Ethylbutoxy)]propanol was designed and synthesized as a chiral building block for the preparation of chiral liquid crystals. Its derivatives, the (S)-2-[1-(2-ethylbutoxy)]propyl 4-[4-(4-alkoxyphenyl)phenoyloxy]benzoates, EPmPPB (m = 8-12), were prepared and their mesomorphic phases investigated. The results showed that the chiral materials displayed enantiotropic SmA* and SmC* phases, while those with shorter alkyl chains (m = 8-10) displayed an additional unidentified SmX* phase. A homologous series of chiral liquid crystal compounds, N-methyl-N-pentyl-(S)-2-(6-(4-(4-alkyloxyphenyl)benzoyloxy)-2-naphthyl)propionamide, with an amide linkage in a chiral tail was synthesized and their mesomorphic properties studied. All the materials possessed an antiferroelectric smectic C (SmCA*) phase, which was confirmed by observations of microscopic texture, switching current behaviour and electro-optical responses. The spontaneous polarization, P s, and apparent tilt angle, θ, were also measured. The maximum P s values are in the range of 173-222 nC cm-2, and the maximum θ values are in the range of 26-30°.  相似文献
