We present results of extensive density functional theory (DFT) calculations for H and H2 interacting with NiAl(110). Continuous representations of the full dimensional potential energy surface (PES) for the H/NiAl(110) and H2/NiAl(110) systems are obtained by interpolation of the DFT results using the corrugation reducing procedure. We find a minimum activation energy barrier of approximately 300 meV for dissociative adsorption of H2, which is consistent with the energy threshold obtained in molecular beam experiments for H2 (nu=0). We explain vibrational enhancement observed in experiments as the consequence of vibrational softening in the entrance channel over the most reactive surface site. The H2/NiAl(110) PES shows a high surface site selectivity: for energies up to 0.1 eV above threshold, H2 adsorption can only take place around top-Ni sites (within a circle of radius approximately 0.3 A). A strong energetic corrugation is observed: energy barriers for dissociation vary by more than 1 eV between the most and the least reactive sites. In contrast, geometric corrugation is much less pronounced and comparable to that of low index single metal surfaces like Cu or Pt.

Previous experimental and theoretical studies of the radical dissociation channel of T(1) acetaldehyde show conflicting behavior in the HCO and CH(3) product distributions. To resolve these conflicts, a full-dimensional potential-energy surface for the dissociation of CH(3)CHO into HCO and CH(3) fragments over the barrier on the T(1) surface is developed based on RO-CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ(DZ) ab initio calculations. 20,000 classical trajectories are calculated on this surface at each of five initial excess energies, spanning the excitation energies used in previous experimental studies, and translational, vibrational, and rotational distributions of the radical products are determined. For excess energies near the dissociation threshold, both the HCO and CH(3) products are vibrationally cold; there is a small amount of HCO rotational excitation and little CH(3) rotational excitation, and the reaction energy is partitioned dominantly (>90% at threshold) into relative translational motion. Close to threshold the HCO and CH(3) rotational distributions are symmetrically shaped, resembling a Gaussian function, in agreement with observed experimental HCO rotational distributions. As the excess energy increases the calculated HCO and CH(3) rotational distributions are observed to change from a Gaussian shape at threshold to one more resembling a Boltzmann distribution, a behavior also seen by various experimental groups. Thus the distribution of energy in these rotational degrees of freedom is observed to change from nonstatistical to apparently statistical, as excess energy increases. As the energy above threshold increases all the internal and external degrees of freedom are observed to gain population at a similar rate, broadly consistent with equipartitioning of the available energy at the transition state. These observations generally support the practice of separating the reaction dynamics into two reservoirs: an impulsive reservoir, fed by the exit channel dynamics, and a statistical reservoir, supported by the random distribution of excess energy above the barrier. The HCO rotation, however, is favored by approximately a factor of 3 over the statistical prediction. Thus, at sufficiently high excess energies, although the HCO rotational distribution may be considered statistical, the partitioning of energy into HCO rotation is not.  相似文献

Cross sections for radiative transitions in the collisionless multiple-photon excitation of molecules are dependent on the initial rotational quantum states of the molecules both at low levels and in the quasi-continum. Averaging of transition cross sections over rotational states in every step of absorption leads to erroneous results in calculating the dissociation yield. If the calculations are done with due regard for this fact, the slope of the dependence of the multiple-photon dissociation yield versus laser fluence is found to decrease and the dissociation threshold is lowered. An experiment to test the theory is proposed.  相似文献

We present quasiclassical dynamics calculations of H2 and D2 scattering by the NiAl(110) surface using a recently proposed six-dimensional potential-energy surface (PES) obtained from density-functional theory calculations. The results for dissociative adsorption confirm several experimental predictions using (rotationally hot) D2 beams, namely, the existence of a dissociation barrier, the small isotopic effect, the importance of vibrational enhancement, and the existence of normal energy scaling. The latter conclusion shows that normal energy scaling is not necessarily associated with weak corrugated surfaces. The results for rotationally elastic and inelastic diffractions are also in reasonable agreement with experiment, but they show that many more diffractive transitions are responsible for the observed structures than previously assumed. This points to the validity of the PES recently proposed [P. Riviere, H. F. Busnengo, and F. Martin, J. Chem. Phys. 121, 751 (2004)] to describe dissociative adsorption as well as rotationally elastic and inelastic diffractions in the H2NiAl(110) system.  相似文献

The dissociation of oxygen on a clean aluminum surface is studied theoretically. A nonadiabatic quantum dynamical model is used, based on four electronically distinct potential energy surfaces characterized by the extent of charge transfer from the metal to the adsorbate. A flat surface approximation is used to reduce the computation complexity. The conservation of the helicopter angular momentum allows Boltzmann averaging of the outcome of the propagation of a three degrees of freedom wave function. The dissociation event is simulated by solving the time-dependent Schr?dinger equation for a period of 30 femtoseconds. As a function of incident kinetic energy, the dissociation yield follows the experimental trend. An attempt at simulation employing only the lowest adiabatic surface failed, qualitatively disagreeing with both experiment and nonadiabatic calculations. The final products, adsorptive dissociation and abstractive dissociation, are obtained by carrying out a semiclassical molecular dynamics simulation with surface hopping which describes the back charge transfer from an oxygen atom negative ion to the surface. The final adsorbed oxygen pair distribution compares well with experiment. By running the dynamical events backward in time, a correlation is established between the products and the initial conditions which lead to their production. Qualitative agreement is thus obtained with recent experiments that show suppression of abstraction by rotational excitation.  相似文献

Three-dimensional time-dependent quantum mechanical method has been used to study the influence of orientation, rotation, and vibration on the dissociation of water molecule on Cu(111) surface, using London-Eyring-Polanyi-Sato potential energy surface. Our calculations show that dependency of dissociation probability on the initial orientation of the molecule changes with the vibrational state of the molecule. It has also been found that for v(0) = 0 and 1, where v(0) stands for the vibrational state of the pseudo diatomic HO-H, the rotational excitation of the molecule increases the reactivity, whereas for v(0) = 2, the rotational excitation of the molecule decreases the reactivity. Vibrational excitation of the molecule greatly enhances the dissociation probability.  相似文献

Jet cooled NO molecules are scattered at 45° with respect to the surface normal from a liquid gallium surface at E(inc) from 1.0(3) to 20(6) kcal/mol to probe rotationally and electronically inelastic scattering from a gas-molten metal interface (numbers in parenthesis represent 1σ uncertainty in the corresponding final digits). Scattered populations are detected at 45° by confocal laser induced fluorescence (LIF) on the γ(0-0) and γ(1-1) A(2)Σ ← X(2)Π(Ω) bands, yielding rotational, spin-orbit, and λ-doublet population distributions. Scattering of low speed NO molecules results in Boltzmann distributions with effective temperatures considerably lower than that of the surface, in respectable agreement with the Bowman-Gossage rotational cooling model [J. M. Bowman and J. L. Gossage, Chem. Phys. Lett. 96, 481 (1983)] for desorption from a restricted surface rotor state. Increasing collision energy results in a stronger increase in scattered NO rotational energy than spin-orbit excitation, with an opposite trend noted for changes in surface temperature. The difference between electronic and rotational dynamics is discussed in terms of the possible influence of electron hole pair excitations in the conducting metal. While such electronically non-adiabatic processes can also influence vibrational dynamics, the γ(1-1) band indicates <2.6 × 10(-4) probability for collisional formation of NO(v = 1) at surface temperatures up to 580 K. Average translational to rotational energy transfer is compared from a hard cube model perspective with previous studies of NO scattering from single crystal solid surfaces. Despite a lighter atomic mass (70 amu), the liquid Ga surface is found to promote translational to rotational excitation more efficiently than Ag(111) (108 amu) and nearly as effectively as Au(111) (197 amu). The enhanced propensity for Ga(l) to transform incident translational energy into rotation is discussed in terms of temperature-dependent capillary wave excitation of the gas-liquid metal interface.  相似文献

The translational energy release distribution for dissociation of benzene-Ar has been measured and, in combination with the 6(1)(0) rotational contour of the benzene product observed in emission, used to determine the rotational J,K distribution of 0(0) benzene products formed during dissociation from 6(1). Significant angular momentum is transferred to benzene on dissociation. The 0(0) rotational distribution peaks at J=31 and is skewed to low K:Javerage=27, (K)average=10.3. The average angle between the total angular momentum vector and the unique rotational axis is determined to be 68 degrees. This indicates that benzene is formed tumbling about in-plane axes rather than in a frisbeelike motion, consistent with Ar "pushing off" benzene from an off-center position above or below the plane. The J distribution is very well reproduced by angular momentum model calculations based on an equivalent rotor approach [A. J. McCaffery, M. A. Osborne, R. J. Marsh, W. D. Lawrance, and E. R. Waclawik, J. Chem. Phys. 121, 1694 (2004)], indicating that angular momentum constraints control the partitioning of energy between translation and rotation. Calculations for p-difluorobenzene-Ar suggest that the equivalent rotor model can provide a reasonable prediction of both J and K distributions in prolate (or near prolate) tops when dissociation leads to excitation about the unique, in-plane axis. Calculations for s-tetrazine-Ar require a small maximum impact parameter to reproduce the comparatively low J values seen for the s-tetrazine product. The three sets of calculations show that the maximum impact parameter is not necessarily equal to the bond length of the equivalent rotor and must be treated as a variable parameter. The success of the equivalent rotor calculations argues that angular momentum constraints control the partitioning between rotation and translation of the products.  相似文献

A theoretical approach that combines classical mechanics for treating translational and rotational degrees of freedom and quantum mechanics for describing the excitation of internal molecular modes is applied to the scattering of diatomic molecules from metal surfaces. Calculations are carried out for determining the extent of energy transfer to the rotational degrees of freedom of the projectile molecule. For the case of observed spectra of intensity versus final rotational energy, quantitative agreement with available experimental data for the scattering of NO and N(2) from close packed metal surfaces is obtained. It is shown that such measurements can be used to determine the average rotational energy of the incident molecular beam. Measurements of the exchange of energy between translational and rotational degrees of freedom upon collision are also described by calculations for these same systems.  相似文献

Molecular dynamics simulations to study the behavior of an anionic surfactant close to TiO(2) surfaces were carried out where each surface was modeled using three different crystallographic orientations of TiO(2) (rutile), (001), (100) and (110). Even though all three surfaces were made with the same atoms the orientation was a key to determine adsorption since surfactant molecules aggregated in different ways. For instance, simulations on the surface (100) showed that the surfactant molecules formed a hemicylinder structure whereas the molecules on the surface (110) were attached to the solid by forming a hemisphere-like structure. Structure of the aggregated molecules and surfactant adsorption on the surfaces were studied in terms of tails and headgroups density profiles as well as surface coverage. From density profiles and angular distributions of the hydrocarbon chains it was possible to determine the influence of the solid surface. For instance, on surfaces (100) and (001) the surfactant molecules formed molecular layers parallel to the surface. Finally, it was found that in the solids (100) and (110) where there are oxygen atoms exposed on the surface the surfactant molecules were attached to the surfaces along the sites between the lines of these oxygen atoms.  相似文献

We present a discretization method that allows one to interpret measurements on diffraction of diatomic molecules from solid surfaces using six-dimensional (6D) classical trajectory calculations. It has been applied to the D2NiAl(110) and H2Pd(111) systems (which are models for activated and nonactivated dissociative chemisorption, respectively) using realistic potential energy surfaces obtained from first principles. Comparisons with experimental results and 6D quantum dynamical calculations show that, in general, the method is able to predict the relative intensity of the most important diffraction peaks. We therefore conclude that classical mechanics can be an efficient guide for experimentalists in the search for the most significant diffraction channels.  相似文献

High-level ab initio electronic structure calculations are used to interpret the fragmentation dynamics of CHBr(2)COCF(3), following excitation with an intense ultrafast laser pulse. The potential energy surfaces of the ground and excited cationic states along the dissociative C-CF(3) bond have been calculated using multireference second order perturbation theory methods. The calculations confirm the existence of a charge transfer resonance during the evolution of a dissociative wave packet on the ground state potential energy surface of the molecular cation and yield a detailed picture of the dissociation dynamics observed in earlier work. Comparisons of the ionic spectrum for two similar molecules support a general picture in which molecules are influenced by dynamic resonances in the cation during dissociation.  相似文献

Photodissociation dynamics of D(2)O in the B?((1)A(1)) state at different photolysis wavelengths have been investigated using the D-atom Rydberg "tagging" time-of-flight (TOF) technique, in combination with a tunable vacuum ultraviolet photolysis light source. TOF spectra of the D-atom product from the D(2)O photodissociation in both parallel and perpendicular polarizations have been measured. Product kinetic energy distributions and angular distributions have been derived from these TOF spectra. From these distributions, internal state distributions of the OD product as well as the OD quantum state specific angular anisotropy parameters have been derived. Two product channels governed by distinct dissociation dynamics have been clearly observed in the B?((1)A(1)) state photodissociation: ground electronic state radical product OD(X (2)Π) + D and excited electronic state OD(A (2)Σ(+)) + D. The OD(A) + D channel proceeds via adiabatic pathway on the B?((1)A(1)) state surface, producing rovibrational excitation in the OD(A) product, while the OD(X) + D channel is generated through nonadiabatic pathway mainly via conical intersections between the B?((1)A(1)) and the X?((1)A(1)) state surfaces. Due to strong angular force induced by the conical intersections, the OD(X) product is extremely hot in the rotational excitation close to the energy limit (N ~ 50 for v = 0). However, the vibrational excitation is cold in the OD(X) product with dominant population in the ground vibrational state v = 0. Detailed experimental results at different photolysis wavelengths show that at higher energy the unstable periodic orbit, from which dissociation starts, on the B? state has stronger excitation degree of the OD internal state. The negative angular anisotropy parameters of the OD(A) products suggest that the angular forces in this adiabatic dissociation pathway from these periodic orbits have changed the original angular distribution of the D(2)O molecule excited by the B?((1)A(1))←X?((1)A(1)) parallel transition.  相似文献

Vibrational relaxation cross sections of the H(2)O(upsilon(2) = 1) bending mode by H(2) molecules are calculated on a recent high-accuracy ab initio potential-energy surface using quasiclassical trajectory calculations. The role of molecular rotation is investigated at a collisional energy of 3500 cm(-1) and it is shown that initial rotational excitation significantly enhances the total (rotationally summed) vibrational relaxation cross sections. A strong and complex dependence on the orientation of the water angular momentum is also observed, suggesting the key role played by the asymmetry of water. Despite the intrinsic limitations of classical mechanics, these exploratory results suggest that quantum approximations based on a complete decoupling of rotation and vibration, such as the widely used vibrational close-coupling (rotational) infinite-order-sudden method, would significantly underestimate rovibrationally inelastic cross sections. We also present some rationale for the absence of dynamical chaos in the scattering process.  相似文献

The interaction of hydrogen with many transition metal surfaces is characterized by a coexistence of activated with non-activated paths to adsorption with a broad distribution of barrier heights. By performing six-dimensional quantum dynamical calculations using a potential energy surface derived from ab initio calculations for the system H2/Pd(100) we show that these features of the potential energy surface lead to strong steering effects in the dissociative adsorption and associative desorption dynamics.

In particular, we focus on the coupling of the translational, rotational and vibrational degrees of freedom of the hydrogen molecule in the reaction dynamics.  相似文献

We report the first six-dimensional quantum dynamical study of the dissociative adsorption of H(2) on a (110) surface. We have performed quantum coupled-channel calculations for the system H(2)/Pd(110) based on a potential energy surface (PES) that was derived from ab initio electronic structure calculations. In particular, we have focused on the effects of the corrugation and anisotropy of the PES on the H(2) dissociation probability. Our results agree well with the available experimental data for the sticking probability as a function of the initial kinetic energy and the angle of incidence. Because of the coupling between the anisotropy and corrugation of the potential energy surface our calculations predict an unusual rotational heating and a rather small rotational alignment in desorption.  相似文献
