The wave excited by a coaxial probe in a beam-plasma system usually propagates as two waves which are independent of each other, i.e., a damped Trivelpiece mode of the plasma and a growing space charge wave of the beam (referred to a reactive-medium instability). While, when the beam velocity is equal to or slightly larger than the phase velocity of the plasma wave, the inverse Landau damping of the wave is observed, instead of the damped Trivelpiece mode.  相似文献

We have observed experimentally the explosive instability of the slow space charge wave of the electron beam and the electrostatic electron cyclotron harmonic wave due to nonlinear wave-particle interaction. These waves interact nonlinearly with the electron beam and grow simultaneously.  相似文献

A modulation of an electron beam density at frequencies lower than an ion cyclotron frequency enhanced the low frequency instability of broad band and heated plasma ions in a beam-plasma system. The heating of ions is explained by the stochastic process of a weakly turbulent plasma.  相似文献

We reinvestigate the dispersion relation for longitudinal plasma waves in a collisionless electron plasma. We show that even at finite temperature there exists a critical wave number kcr below which Landau damping is absent. Furthermore, the magnitude of damping deviates from Landau's formula also well above kcr. We propose to extend existing experiments to wave numbers kkcr.  相似文献

Landau damping in weakly interacting Bose gases is investigated by means of perturbation theory. Our approach points out the crucial role played by Bose-Einstein condensation and yields an explicit expression for the decay rate of elementary excitations in both uniform and non-uniform gases. Systematic results are derived for the phonon width in homogeneous gases interacting with repulsive forces. Special attention is given to the low and high temperature regimes.  相似文献

The Caldeira-Leggett Hamiltonian describes the interaction of a discrete harmonic oscillator with a continuous bath of harmonic oscillators. This system is a standard model of dissipation in macroscopic low temperature physics, and has applications to superconductors, quantum computing, and macroscopic quantum tunneling. The similarities between the Caldeira-Leggett model and the linearized Vlasov-Poisson equation are analyzed, and it is shown that the damping in the Caldeira-Leggett model is analogous to that of Landau damping in plasmas (Landau, 1946 [1]). An invertible linear transformation (Morrison and Pfirsch, 1992 [18]; Morrison, 2000 [19]) is presented that converts solutions of the Caldeira-Leggett model into solutions of the linearized Vlasov-Poisson system.  相似文献

采用含时哈特里-福克-博戈留波夫近似研究雪茄形铷原子玻色-爱因斯坦凝聚中单极子模的朗道阻尼和频移. 通过考虑元激发的实际弛豫及其各弛豫间的正交关系改进原有方法, 并由此给出计算朗道阻尼和频移的新公式. 此外, 令凝聚体边界处动能密度为零代替令基态能量极小以改进原消除三模耦合矩阵元的方法. 通过这些改进, 同时计算阻尼和频移, 并讨论它们的温度依赖, 所得理论结果都与实验符合. 关键词: 玻色-爱因斯坦凝聚 朗道阻尼和频移 哈特里-福克-博戈留波夫近似 托马斯-费米近似  相似文献

A quantum-mechanical formula for describing the dependence of the longitudinal permittivity of a nanotube on its characteristic parameters and the magnetic field strength was derived. The imaginary part of the permittivity was isolated, and the cases of a Boltzmann and degenerate electron gas were examined. For a degenerate electron gas, asymptotic expressions for absorption in the short- and long-wave ranges were obtained. It was demonstrated that the absorption coefficient for a longitudinal electromagnetic wave exhibits Aharonov-Bohm oscillations.  相似文献

In many physical situations where a laser or electron beam passes through a dense plasma, hot low-density electron populations can be generated, resulting in a particle distribution function consisting of a dense cold population and a small hot population. Presence of such low-density electron distributions can alter the wave damping rate. Kinetic model is employed to study the Landau damping of Langmuir waves when a small hot electron population is present in the dense cold electron population with non-Maxwellian distribution functions. Departure of plasma from Maxwellian distributions significantly alters the damping rates as compared to the Maxwellian plasma. Strong damping is found for highly non-Maxwellian distributions as well as plasmas with higher dense and hot electron population. Existence of weak damping is also established when the distribution contains broadened flat tops at the low energies or tends to be Maxwellian. These results may be applied in both experimental and space physics regimes.  相似文献

Helicon waves are found useful for studying Landau damping in degenerate plasmas. The damping is analyzed as the phase velocity of the wave is increased from ω/q vF to ω/q vF. There is no first-orderlike transition at ω/q = VF. In the collisionless limit, the damping tends to zero as ω/qvF. For finite collision times τ it does not vanish for ω/q > vF. Nonlocal corrections to the wavelength exhibit a peak at ω/q = VF, which degenerates into a shoulder for ωτ 100.  相似文献

Microwave emission was measured from a system consisting of an unmagnetized plasma and a propagating electron beam. A 93-cm2 velvet cathode, with an anode-cathode gap of 5.9 cm, injects the electron current into the plasma through an aluminized Mylar anode. Measurements were made of the diode voltage and current in the 6-μV water dielectric accelerator and net current through the beam-plasma system. The unmagnetized plasma is produced by a 90-μs, 90-Å current pulse, emitted from a thermionic LaB6 electron source, that preionizes argon fill in a 1-m-long, 15-cm-diameter Lucite tube. A microwave spectrometer detects the radio-frequency output in the 2-18, 18-26, and 26-47 GHz bands, filters, and then separates into narrower subbands. The emission takes place in two distinct phases. The 2-GHz output rises promptly with the current pulse and then decays. At 6-GHz and above, a low-level microwave prepulse appears simultaneously with the 2-6 GHz output. This output rises sharply 25 ns after the current pulse begins and includes frequencies out to and beyond 40 GHz. The radio-frequency output falls off before the current pulse ends.
