The dynamical system consisting of three relativistic massless strings, self coupled at a common junction, is investigated classically. The equations of motion are generated from the fundamental action used to describe the single string. An essentially non-linear free boundary problem is recognised in the orthogonal transverse gauge and a large class of solutions is obtained. The leading Regge slopes associated with some of these solutions are calculated and their implications for a viable model of a baryon discussed.  相似文献

We discuss the validity of replacing the complicated three-body confinement operator of the Y string junction type by three kinds of approximation which are numerically much simpler to handle: a one-body operator with the junction point at the centre of mass, a two-body operator corresponding to half the perimeter of the triangle formed by the three particles, and the average of both. Two different approaches for testing the quality of the approximations are proposed: a geometrical treatment based on the comparison of the potential energy strengths for the various inter-quark distances, and a dynamical treatment based on the comparison of the corresponding effective string tensions using a hyperspherical approach. Both procedures give very similar results. It is shown how to simulate the genuine string junction operator by the approximations proposed above. Exact three-body calculations are presented in order to compare quantitatively the various approximations and to confirm our analysis.Received: 23 June 2003, Revised: 15 September 2003, Published online: 3 December 2003C. We consider the phenomenological implications of the assumption that baryons are systems of three quarks connected through a gluon string junction. The transfer of baryon number in rapidity space due to the string junction propagation is considered in detail. At high energies this process leads to a significant effect on the net baryon production in hN collisions at midrapidities. The numerical results for midrapidity inclusive densities of different secondaries in the framework of the quark–gluon string model are in reasonable agreement with the experimental data. One universal value, λ≃0.25, for the strangeness suppression parameter correctly describes the yield ratios of Λ/p, Ξ/Λ, and Ω/Ξ. The predictions for pp collisions at LHC energies are also presented. The search for analytic solutions in open string fields theory à la Witten often meets with singular expressions, which need an adequate mathematical formalism to be interpreted. In this paper we discuss this problem and propose a way to resolve the related ambiguities. Our claim is that a correct interpretation requires a formalism similar to distribution theory in functional analysis. To this end we concretely construct a locally convex space of test string states together with the dual space of functionals. We show that the above suspicious expressions can be identified with well defined elements of the dual.  相似文献

We present some mathematical aspects of Landau-Ginzburg string vacua in terms of toric geometry. The one-to-one correspondence between toric divisors and some of the (−1, 1) states in the Landau-Ginzburg model is presented for superpotentials of typical types. The Landau-Ginzburg interpretation of non-toric divisors is also presented. Using this interpretation, we propose a method to solve the so-called “twisted sector problem” by orbifold construction. Moreover, this construction shows that the moduli spaces of the original Landau-Ginzburg string vacua and their orbifolds are connected. By considering the mirror map of the Landau-Ginzburg models, we obtain the relation between Mori vectors and the twist operators of our orbifoldization. This consideration enables us to argue the embedding of the Seiberg-Witten curve in the defining equation of the Calabi-Yau manifolds on which the type II string gets compactified. Related topics concerning the Calabi-Yau fourfolds and the extremal transition are discussed.  相似文献

Following the techniques used by Letelier and Stachel some new physically relevant stationary solutions of string cosmology with magnetic field are presented. In these solutions, the flow vector of matter has non-zero rotation and the cosmological constant is taken to be non-zero. Previously known solutions are derived as particular cases from our class of solutions. Some string models with vanishing cosmological constant are also discussed.  相似文献

A recent investigation showed that a local gauge string with a phenomenological energy momentum tensor, as prescribed by Vilenkin, is inconsistent in Brans-Dicke theory. In this work it has been shown that such a string is indeed consistent if one introduces time dependences in the metric. A string action which is essentially a Willmore functional is presented and studied. This action determines the physics of a surface in Euclidean three space which can be used to model classical string configurations. By varying this action an equation of motion for the mean curvature of the surface is obtained which is shown to govern certain classical string configurations. Several classes of classical solutions for this equation are discussed from the symmetry group point of view and an application is presented.   相似文献

We present an ADHMN-like construction which generates self-dual string solutions to the effective M5-brane worldvolume theory from solutions to the Basu-Harvey equation. Our construction finds a natural interpretation in terms of gerbes, which we develop in some detail. We also comment on a possible extension to stacks of multiple M5-branes.  相似文献

Exact plane wave solutions of d = 10, N = 1 Einstein-Yang-Mills supergravity theory are presented and their possible modifications in superstring effective theories are examined. It is found that the solutions are not affected by any of the known heterotic string corrections. It is argued that plane waves satisfy the effective field equations of the heterotic string theory in all powers of the string tension parameter α′, possibly after including a totally antisymmetric torsion field and reinterpreting the constants. Similar remarks also apply for type I superstrings. Further properties of the solutions are discussed.  相似文献

We present a novel string theory scenario where matter in a spacetime originates from a decaying brane at the origin of time. The decay could be considered as a big-bang-like event at X0=0. The closed string interpretation is a time-dependent spacetime with a semi-infinite time direction, with the initial energy of the brane converted into energy flux from the origin. The open string interpretation can be viewed as a string theoretic nonsingular initial condition.  相似文献

The Faddeev-Popov determinant of the reparametrization ghosts of the closed bosonic string on bordered Riemann surfaces is investigated. It is found that the standard ghost action has to be supplemented by additional boundary terms. These additional terms lead to a nontrivial ghost transition amplitude. It is shown that boundary variations of ghost transition amplitudes are generated by the ghost Virasoro operators. The relevance of the boundary variation operator for string field theory is illustrated. A new interpretation of the BRST operator in terms of boundary variations is obtained and the BRST invariance of the transition amplitudes is demonstrated. A generalization of the Siegel gauge of second quantized closed bosonic string field theory is presented.  相似文献

We consider the realization of affine ADE Lie algebras as string junctions on mutually non-local 7-branes in Type 1113 string theory. The existence of the affine algebra is signaled by the presence of the imaginary root junction δ, which is realized as a string encircling the 7-brane configuration. The level k of an affine representation partially constrains the asymptotic (p, q) charges of string junctions departing the configuration. The junction intersection form reproduces the full affine inner product, plus terms in the asymptotic charges.  相似文献

A massless scalar field without self-interaction and string coupled to gravity is quantized in the framework of quantum cosmology using the Bohm–de Broglie interpretation. Gaussian superpositions of the quantum solutions of the corresponding Wheeler–DeWitt equation in minisuperspace are constructed. The Bohmian trajectories obtained exhibit a graceful exit from the inflationary pre-big bang epoch to the decelerated expansion phase.  相似文献

The possibility that topologically stable strings formed at a grand unification phase transition led to galaxy formation is discussed. A large class of solutions describing non-self-intersecting loops is presented. The gravitational field and power radiated from a simple class of oscillating configurations of string is calculated, and the possibility of its detection discussed.
