Sustained high notes, diminishing gradually from the loudest to the softest phonation within a maneuver called messa di voce, are examined in two contrasting professional tenor voices. Signals of the sound pressure level, electroglottograph, and mean esophageal pressure are recorded, and similar maneuvers by the same subjects are examined stroboscopically. The lyric voice is found to make a gradual diminuendo while maintaining nearly constant posture of the vocal tract together with a phase of complete closure in the glottal cycle. The robust voice, by contrast, passes abruptly from a production of high subglottal pressure and a high closed quotient to one of low pressure and incomplete closure, and the transition is marked by a sudden opening of the previously constricted laryngeal collar. It is proposed that the mode of soft voice production demonstrated by the robust voice be recognized as a distinct register of the singing voice. 相似文献

This study sought to examine the specific relationship between phonation threshold pressure (PTP) and voice fundamental frequency (F(0)) across the pitch range. A published theoretical model of this relationship described a quadratic equation, with PTP increasing exponentially with F(0). Prospective data from eight adults with normal, untrained voices were collected. Subjects produced their quietest phonation at 10 randomly ordered pitches from 5% to 95% of their semitone pitch range at 10% intervals. Analysis included curve fitting for individual and group data, as well as comparisons to the previous model. The group data fit a quadratic function similar to that proposed previously, but the specific quadratic coefficient and constant values differed. Four of the individual subjects' data were best fit by quartic functions, two by quadratic functions, and one by a linear function. This preliminary study indicates that PTP may be minimal at a "comfortable" pitch rather than the lowest pitch tested, and that, for some individuals, PTP may be slightly elevated during the passaggio between modal and falsetto vocal registers. These data support the general form of the theoretical PTP-F(0) function for these speakers, and indicate the possibility of potential refinements to the model. Future studies with larger groups of male and female subjects across a wider age range may eventually reveal the specific nature of the function. 相似文献

Objectives/Hypotheses
Singers learn to produce well-controlled tone onsets by accurate synchronization of glottal adduction and buildup of subglottal pressure. Spectrographic analyses have shown that the higher spectrum partials are present also at the vowel onset in classically trained singers’ performances. Such partials are produced by a sharp discontinuity in the waveform of the transglottal airflow, presumably produced by vocal fold collision.Study Design
After hearing a prompt series of a triad pattern, six singer subjects sang the same triad pattern on the vowel /i/ (1) preceded by an aspirated /p/, (2) preceded by an unaspirated /p/, and (3) without any preceding consonant in staccato. Methods
Using high-speed imaging we examined the initiation of vocal fold vibration in aspirated and unaspirated productions of the consonant /p/ as well as in the staccato tones. Results
The number vibrations failing to produce vocal fold collision were significantly higher in the aspirated /p/ than in the unaspirated /p/ and in the staccato tones. High frequency ripple in the audio waveform was significantly delayed in the aspirated /p/.Conclusions
Initiation of vocal fold collision and the appearance of high-frequency ripple in the vowel /i/ are slightly delayed in aspirated productions of a preceding consonant /p/. 相似文献15.

"Throaty" voice quality has been regarded by voice pedagogues as undesired and even harmful. This study attempts to identify acoustic and physiological correlates of this quality. One male and one female subject read a text habitually and with a throaty voice quality. Oral pressure during p-occlusion was measured as an estimate of subglottal pressure. Long-term average spectrum analysis described the average spectrum characteristics. Sixteen syllables, perceptually evaluated with regard to throaty quality by five experts, were selected for analysis. Formant frequencies and voice source characteristics were measured by means of inverse filtering, and the vocal tract shape of the throaty and normal versions of the vowels [a,u,i,ae] of the male subject were recorded by magnetic resonance imaging. From this material, area functions were derived and their resonance frequencies were determined. The throaty versions of these four vowels all showed a pharynx that was narrower than in the habitually produced versions. To test the relevance of formant frequencies to perceived throaty quality, experts rated degree of throatiness in synthetic vowel samples, in which the measured formant frequency values of the subject were used. The main acoustic correlates of throatiness seemed to be an increase of F1, a decrease of F4, and in front vowels a decrease of F2, which presumably results from a narrowing of the pharynx. In the male subject, voice source parameters suggested a more hyperfunctional voice in throaty samples. 相似文献

SUMMARY: The purpose of this investigation was to investigate physical mechanisms of vocal fold vibration during normal phonation through quantification of the medial surface dynamics of the fold. An excised hemilarynx setup was used. The dynamics of 30 microsutures mounted on the medial surface of a human vocal fold were analyzed across 18 phonatory conditions. The vibrations were recorded with a digital high-speed camera at a frequency of 4,000 Hz. The positions of the sutures were extracted and converted to three-dimensional coordinates using a linear approximation technique. The data were reduced to principal eigenfuctions, which captured over 90% of the variance of the data, and suggested mechanisms of sustained vocal fold oscillation. The vibrations were imaged as the following phonatory conditions were manipulated: glottal airflow, an adductory force applied to the muscular process, and an elongation force applied to the thyroid cartilage. Over the range of variables studied, only the variation in glottal airflow yielded significant changes in subglottal pressure and fundamental frequency. All recordings showed high correlation for the distribution of the dynamics across the medial surface of the vocal fold. The distribution of the different displacement directions and velocities showed the highest variations around the superior region of the medial surface. Although the computed vibration patterns of the two largest empirical eigenfunctions were consistent with previous experimental observations, the relative prominence of the two eigenfunctions changed as a function of glottal airflow, impacting theories of vocal efficiency and vocal economy. 相似文献

Non-invasive in vivo marbling quantification helps owners to choose the optimum nutritional management for growing cattle and buyers to more precisely evaluate grown cattle at auctions. When using time-domain proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxometry, it is possible to quantify muscle and fat separately by taking advantage of the difference in the spin–spin relaxation time (T2) between water molecules in muscles and fat molecules, which would contribute to the non-invasive and objective determination of marbling scores. With this in mind, we developed a prototype NMR scanner (4.1 MHz for protons) using an original single-sided magnetic circuit and a plane radio frequency (RF) coil for use in the non-invasive quantification of water and fat in live cattle. The sensed region of the developed scanner is compact and almost cubical (19 × 19 × 16 mm3) while the investigation depth (the distance from the RF coil to the center of the sensed region) has been lengthened to 30 mm, which is sufficient for the in vivo trapezius muscle measurement of live cattle. Measurements of 17 samples of beef meat blocks kept at 39 °C were taken in a laboratory to successfully obtain the calibration lines used to convert the NMR signals into water and fat weight fractions at correlation coefficients in excess of 0.9. We also showed that each meat sample could be measured in about 10 s with a measurement error as small as approximately 10 wt%. Accordingly, we believe that our prototype scanner would be useful for in vivo marbling measurements of live cattle trapezius muscles. 相似文献
