The common matrix formalism for multi-layer systems is generalized to describe the optical field propagation along an arbitrary cascade of step discontinuities in a planar dielectric waveguide. The reflection and transmission properties of the step cascade are modelled by rigorous operator relations in a Hilbert-space calculus. In this way the complete propagation problem is reduced to two basic transformations. TE- and TM-polarized fields are treated simultaneously. 相似文献

The propagation characteristics of TE waves guided by a film with a Kerr-like nonlinear permittivity are investigated theoretically. The dispersion equations for positive and negative nonlinear coefficients are derived by introducing the maximum field amplitude as a parameter for the nonlinearity. Typical numerical results for dispersion characteristics are shown. For a hollow waveguide with positive nonlinear coefficient, the threshold power flow is determined numericlly from the viewpoint of applications to optical power clipping. It is found that the threshold power flow is proportional to the square root of the unperturbed permittivity difference between the film, and cladding. 相似文献

A theory is presented of guided TE modes in a one-dimensional slabe waveguide bounded by nonlinear media with intensity dependent refractive indices. It is shown that this is a straightforward generalisation of linear slab waveguide theory with the modes parametrised by the power flow down the guide. The interaction of opposing TE-waves in a nonlinear cubical dielectric located in a waveguide of arbitrary cross-section is examined. It is shown that the propagation constants of the interacting waves are functions of the combination of the amplitudes of those waves. Wave reflection and refraction in a nonlinear plate are investigated. A formula for the reflection coefficient and a “trnasillumination” condition of the nonlinear plate are obtained. 相似文献

We report an investigation of pulse propagation through a recently proposed nonlinear amplifier composed of asymmetrical twin-core fibre. While the pulse is amplified and the associated noise is suppressed, we find that the pulse is strongly chirped. While the chirp in the centre of the pulse can be easily eliminated by inserting a short piece of dispersive fibre right after the amplifier, the chirp in the wings may remain and lead to the eventual destruction of the pulse. This residual chirp can be removed through a damped and radiative oscillation by judicious adjustment of the parameters of the amplifier and the dispersive fibre. Finally, we consider the effect of noise in the pulse. We discovered a threshold of the noise amplitude below which the noise is suppressed (which must be a characteristic asset of the nonlinear amplifier). Above the threshold, the noise tends to shift the centre of the pulse. 相似文献

Summary Several numerical computations are carried out to investigate the effects of the propagation of pulses (solitons and quasi-solitons)
in one-dimensional nonlinear chains. Numerical results concerning the Toda lattice and a Coulomb-like lattice are discussed
and compared. We consider lattices both with and without defects.

Slow light effect in a dielectric slab waveguide with a negative refractive index photonic crystal substrate is numerically investigated. The guided modes are confined in the core layer by total internal reflection. Dispersion and wave propagating properties are explored in details. The result demonstrates that light speed can approach zero at two adjacent frequencies, which is also verified by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation. Calculated Q-factors both exceed several thousand. The structure has the potential to be used as high-Q open cavity for dual-wavelength lasers or traveling wave amplifiers. 相似文献

Linearly polarized fundamental mode Gaussian beams were generated and coupled to a hollow circular oversized dielectric waveguide by placing the waist of the beam at the guide entrance. The transmission properties of the waveguide were characterized as a function of frequency for a variety of coupling conditions. These conditions included changes in the input beam waist radius, angle of incidence, and displacement perpendicular and parallel to the guide axis. It has been found that: 1.) power transmission is maximized when the waist of the input beam is centered at the guide input, injected normally, and has a radius of 0.43 times the waveguide radius, 2.) power transmission decreases rapidly with increasing angle of incidence and the rate of that loss increases with frequency, 3.) the waveguide preserves the linear polarization of the input beam, 4.) power transmission in the fundamental waveguide mode is not greatly affected by moderate displacements in the input beam position, and 5.) upon exit from the waveguide the launched EH11 mode propagates as a fundamental mode Gaussian beam in the quasi-far field. The results compare favorably to the transmission theory of Belland and Crenn and approximately to the near and far field mode pattern theory of Degnan. 相似文献

In this work we investigate the linear and nonlinear coupling properties of a novel multicore circular dielectric waveguide. The proposed device consists of a circular central core and many circular sectoral cores at the periphery, while the whole structure can be considered as a nonlinear multicore composite optical coupler. Hybrid guided modes in a circular sectoral dielectric waveguide are derived using circular harmonic expansion for the electromagnetic fields and the Point Matching Method (PMM) for the application of boundary conditions. Several cases are investigated varying some of the parameters of the geometry and the optical frequency in order to produce dispersion diagrams. In advance, the electric and magnetic field distributions for the fundamental guided modes are produced, while linear and nonlinear coupling coefficients as well as the sectoral waveguide mode effective area are derived. 相似文献

For the transverse electric polarization case (TE) we present a treatment of the optical reflectivity and transmissivity of a slab whose dielectric coefficient is a real valued function of the light intensity. If this function is numerically integrable with respect to the light intensity, our treatment can serve as an algorithm for a numerical solution of the nonlinear wave equation. If the dielectric function is proportional to the intensity, an analytical solution of the cubic wave equation is given for the electric field strength and for the phase of the field in terms of Weierstrass' elliptic functions and first elliptic theta functions, respectively. Evaluating this solution by means of a computer algebra system yields the reflectivity, transmissivity and phase dependency on the incident field intensity and on parameters characteristic for the problem. Certain combinations of the parameters lead to bistable and multivalued behavior. The solution found is used to determine the relative extrema of the reflectivity and the critical values of the thickness and of the incident intensity. The results are a generalization of linear optics results. Application of the analysis to the cubic-quintic wave equation yields the general analytic solution which is used to detemine the reflectivity of a semi-infinite nonlinear medium. 相似文献

In collisional and ponderomotive predominant regimes, the propagation of microwave in rectangular waveguide filled with collisional plasma is investigated numerically. The dominant mode is excited through an evacuated waveguide and then enters a similar and co-axis waveguide filled with plasma. In collisional predominant regime, the amplitude of electric field is oscillated along propagation path; outset of propagation path due to the electron-ion collision, the intensity oscillations are reduced. Afterward, under competition between the collisional nonlinearity and absorption, the intensity is increased, so the electron density peak is created in middle of waveguide. In ponderomotive predominant regime, the intensity is slowly decreased due to collision, so the electron density is ramped. Control parameters, like the frequency, input power, collision frequency, and background electron density are surveyed that can be used to control propagation characteristics of microwave. This method can be used to control heating of fusion plasma and accelerate charged particle. 相似文献

A structure on the basis of coupled magnonic crystals has been considered, for which a nonlinear model in the form of a system of nonlinear Schrödinger equations has been developed. By numerical simulation, the possibility of nonlinear branching of the signal has been shown, in which, depending on the input amplitude, pulses exit through different ports of the coupled structure. We investigate the properties of arc plasmonic waveguide coupler between two-dimensional dielectric slab waveguides and plasmonic waveguides with two-dimensional finite difference time domain methods. The simulation results show that transmission efficiency between high index dielectric slab waveguides with width 300 nm and silver-air-silver waveguides with width 40 nm connected by the coupler can reach to 90.4% at optical communication wavelength. And, by optimizing the shapes near the ends of the coupler, the transmission efficiency can be improved to 98.4%. 相似文献
