Hydrate aggregation and deposition are critical factors in determining where and when hydrates may plug a deepwater flowline. We present the first direct measurement of structure II (cyclopentane) hydrate cohesive forces in the water, liquid hydrocarbon and gas bulk phases. For fully annealed hydrate particles, gas phase cohesive forces were approximately twice that obtained in a liquid hydrocarbon phase, and approximately six times that obtained in the water phase. Direct measurements show that hydrate cohesion force in a water-continuous bulk may be only the product of solid-solid cohesion. When excess water was present on the hydrate surface, gas phase cohesive forces increased by a factor of three, suggesting the importance of the liquid or quasi-liquid layer (QLL) in determining cohesive force. Hydrate-steel adhesion force measurements show that, when the steel surface is coated with hydrophobic wax, forces decrease up to 96%. As the micromechanical force technique is uniquely capable of measuring hydrate-surface forces with variable contact time, the present work contains significant implications for hydrate applications in flow assurance.  相似文献

In this study we measured the adhesion forces between atomic force microscope (AFM) tips or particles attached to AFM cantilevers and different solid samples. Smooth and homogeneous surfaces such as mica, silicon wafers, or highly oriented pyrolytic graphite, and more rough and heterogeneous surfaces such as iron particles or patterns of TiO2 nanoparticles on silicon were used. In the first part, we addressed the well-known issue that AFM adhesion experiments show wide distributions of adhesion forces rather than a single value. Our experiments show that variations in adhesion forces comprise fast (i.e., from one force curve to the next) random fluctuations and slower fluctuations, which occur over tens or hundreds of consecutive measurements. Slow fluctuations are not likely to be the result of variations in external factors such as lateral position, temperature, humidity, and so forth because those were kept constant. Even if two solid bodies are brought into contact under precisely the same conditions (same place, load, direction, etc.) the result of such a measurement will often not be the same as that of the previous contact. The measurement itself will induce structural changes in the contact region, which can change the value for the next adhesion force measurement. In the second part, we studied the influence of humidity on the adhesion of nanocontacts. Humidity was adjusted relatively fast to minimize tip wear during one experiment. For hydrophobic surfaces, no signification change in adhesion force with humidity was observed. Adhesion force versus humidity curves recorded with hydrophilic surfaces either showed a maximum or continuously increased. We demonstrate that the results can be interpreted with simple continuum theory of the meniscus force. The meniscus force is calculated based on a model that includes surface roughness and takes into account different AFM tip (or particle) shapes by a two-sphere model. Experimental and theoretical results show that the precise contact geometry has a critical influence on the humidity dependence of the adhesion force. Changes in tip geometry on the sub-10-nm length scale can completely change adhesion force versus humidity curves. Our model can also explain the differences between earlier AFM studies, where different dependencies of the adhesion force on humidity were observed.  相似文献

A simple mathematical model for the depletion force between two arbitrarily shaped large convex colloidal particles immersed in a suspension of small spherical particles is proposed. Using differential geometry, the interaction potential is expressed in terms of the mean and Gaussian curvature of the particle surfaces. The accuracy of theoretical results is tested by Monte Carlo simulations for parallel and nonparallel circular cylinders. The agreement between theoretical results and simulated data is very good if the density of the depletion agent is not too high.  相似文献

Direct measurements of the pull-off (adhesion) forces between pharmaceutical particles (beclomethasone dipropionate, a peptide-type material, and lactose) with irregular geometry and rough polymeric surfaces (series of polypropylene coatings, polycarbonate, and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) were carried out using the atomic force microscope. These measurements showed that roughness of the interacting surfaces is the significant factor affecting experimentally measured pull-off forces. A broad distribution of pull-off force values was noted in the measurements, caused by a varying adhesive contact area for a particle located on rough substrate. The possibility of multiple points of contact between irregularly shaped pharmaceutical particles and substrate surfaces is demonstrated with nanoindentations of the particle in a fluoro-polymer film. Force-distance curves showing the "sawtooth" pattern are additional evidence that particles make contact with substrates at more than one point. Reduced adhesion of 10- to 14-microm-diameter lactose and peptide material particles to the polypropylene coatings with a roughness of 194 nm was found in this study. Similar pull-off force versus roughness relationships are also reported for the model spherical particles, silanized glass particle with a size of 10 microm and polystyrene particle with a diameter of 9 microm, in contact with polypropylene coatings of varying roughness characteristics. It was found that the model recently proposed by Rabinovich et al. (J. Colloid Interface Sci. 232, 1-16 (2000)) closely predicts the pull-off forces for glass and lactose particles. On the other hand, the adhesion of the peptide material and polystyrene particle to polypropylene is underestimated by about an order of magnitude with the theoretical model, in which the interacting substrates are treated as rigid materials. The underestimate is attributed to the deformation of the peptide material and polystyrene particles.  相似文献

The guest dynamics and thermal behavior occurring in the cages of clathrate hydrates appear to be too complex to be clearly understood through various structural and spectroscopic approaches, even for the well-known structures of sI, sII, and sH. Neutron diffraction studies have recently been carried out to clarify the special role of guests in expanding the host water lattices and have contributed to revealing the influence factors on thermal expansivity. Through this letter we attempt to address three noteworthy features occurring in guest inclusion: (1) the effect of guest dimension on host water lattice expansion; (2) the effect of thermal history on host water lattice expansion; and (3) the effect of coherent/incoherent scattering cross sections on guest thermal patterns. The diatomic guests of H 2, D 2, N 2, and O 2 have been selected for study, and their size and mass dependence on the degree of lattice expansion have been examined, and four sII clathrate hydrates with tetrahydrofuran (THF) have been synthesized in order to determine their neutron powder diffraction patterns. After thermal cycling, the THF + H 2 clathrate hydrate is observed to exhibit an irreversible plastic deformation-like pattern, implying that the expanded lattices fail to recover the original state by contraction. The host-water cage dimension after degassing the guest molecules remains as it was expanded, and thus host-guest as well as guest-guest interactions will be altered if guest uptake reoccurs.  相似文献

Tetrahydrofuran (THF) was selected as the substitute to study the flow behaviors and the mechanism of the hydrates blockage in pipelines. The slurrylike hydrates and slushlike hydrates are observed with the formation of hydrates in pipeline. There is a critical hydrate volume concentration of 50.6% for THF slurries and pipeline will be free of hydrate blockage while the hydrate volume concentration is lower than the critical volume concentration; otherwise, pipeline will be easy to be blocked. Fully turbulent flow occurs and friction factors tend to be constant when the velocity reaches 1.5 m/s. And then, constant values of friction factors that depend on the volume concentrations in the slurry were regressed to estimate the pressure drops of THF hydrate slurry at large mean velocity. Finally, a safe region, defined according to the critical hydrate volume concentration, was proposed for THF hydrate slurry, which may provide some insight for further studying the natural gas hydrate slurries and judge whether the pipeline can be run safely or not.  相似文献

Interparticle forces have been measured between polystyrene latex particles as small as 85 nm in diameter in KCl solutions. A variant of the differential electrophoresis technique, called particle force light scattering (PFLS), was used to measure forces between Brownian, nearly touching particles for diameters from 4500 nm down to 85 nm. The forces, some less than 0.1 pN, matched to within a factor of 2 with predictions from depletion and DLVO theory.  相似文献

In atomic force microscopy, the cantilevers are mounted under a certain tilt angle alpha with respect to the sample surface. In this paper, we show that this increases the effective spring constant by typically 10-20%. The effective spring constant of a rectangular cantilever of length L can be obtained by dividing the measured spring constant by cos2 alpha(1 - 2D tan alpha/L). Here, alpha is the tilt angle and D is the size of the tip. In colloidal probe experiments, D has to be replaced by the radius of the attached particle. To determine the effect of tilt experimentally, the adhesion force between spherical borosilicate particles and planar silicon oxide surfaces was measured at tilt angles between 0 degrees and 35 degrees. The experiments revealed a significant decrease of the mean apparent adhesion force with a tilt of typically 20-30% at alpha = 20 degrees. In addition, they demonstrate that the adhesion depends drastically on the precise position of contact on the particle surface.  相似文献

The adhesion of microbial cells to metal surfaces in aqueous media is an important phenomenon in both the natural environment and engineering systems. The adhesion of two anaerobic sulfate-reducing bacteria (Desulfovibrio desulfuricans and a local marine isolate) and an aerobe (Pseudomonas sp.) to four polished metal surfaces (i.e., stainless steel 316, mild steel, aluminum, and copper) was examined using a force spectroscopy technique with an atomic force microscope (AFM). Using a modified bacterial tip, the attraction and repulsion forces (in the nano-Newton range) between the bacterial cell and the metal surface in aqueous media were quantified. Results show that the bacterial adhesion force to aluminum is the highest among the metals investigated, whereas the one to copper is the lowest. The bacterial adhesion forces to metals are influenced by both the electrostatic force and metal surface hydrophobicity. It is also found that the physiological properties of the bacterium, namely the bacterial surface charges and hydrophobicity, also have influence on the bacteria-metal interaction. The adhesion to the metals by Pseudomonas sp. and D. desulfuricans was greater than by the marine SRB isolate. The cell-cell interactions show that there are strong electrostatic repulsion forces between bacterial cells. Cell probe atomic force microscopy has provided some useful insight into the interactions of bacterial cells with the metal surfaces.  相似文献

Here we describe a non-traditional method to identify cancerous human cervical epithelial cells in a culture dish based on physical adhesion between silica beads and cells. It is a simple optical fluorescence-based technique which detects the relative difference in the amount of fluorescent silica beads physically adherent to surfaces of cancerous and normal cervical cells. The method utilizes the centripetal force gradient that occurs in a rotating culture dish. Due to the variation in the balance between adhesion and centripetal forces, cancerous and normal cells demonstrate clearly distinctive distributions of the fluorescent particles adherent to the cell surface over the culture dish. The method demonstrates higher adhesion of silica particles to normal cells compared to cancerous cells. The difference in adhesion was initially observed by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The AFM data were used to design the parameters of the rotational dish experiment. The optical method that we describe is much faster and technically simpler than AFM. This work provides proof of the concept that physical interactions can be used to accurately discriminate normal and cancer cells.  相似文献

Influence of 3A molecular sieve on tetrahydrofuran (THF) hydrate formation   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Visual observation of the THF hydrate formation process in the presence of a 3A molecular sieve has been made at normal atmosphere and below a temperature of zero by microscopy. The results indicate that a 3A molecular sieve can induce the nucleation of the THF hydrate and promote the THF hydrate growth. With the existence of a 3A molecular sieve, the growth rate of THF hydrate is between 0.01 and 0.05 μm/s. In comparison with the system without any 3A molecular sieve, the growth rate increases about 4 nm/s. After the THF hydrate grows into megacryst, the crystals will recombine and partially change under the same condition.  相似文献

Clathrate hydrate can be used in energy gas storage and transportation,CO 2 capture and cool storage etc. However, these technologies are difficult to be used due to the low formation rate and long induction time of hydrate formation. In this paper,ZIF-61(zeolite imidazolate framework,ZIF) was first used in hydrate formation to stimulate hydrate nucleation. As an additive of clathrate hydrate,ZIF-61 promoted obviously the acceleration of tetrahydrofuran(THF) hydrate nucleation. It shortened the induction time of THF hydrate formation from 2-5 h to 0.3-1 h mainly due to the template function of ZIF-61 by which the nucleation of THF hydrate has been promoted.  相似文献

A high-pressure phase of the clathrate hydrate of tetrahydrofuran was prepared by freezing a liquid phase of overall composition THF · 7 H2O under a pressure of 3.0 kbar, or by pressurizing the solid structure II THF hydrate of 255K to 3.4 kbar. Unfortunately, the products recovered at 77K were always mixed phase materials as shown by X-ray powder diffraction. A number of diffraction lines could be indexed in terms of the cubic structure I hydrate with a slightly expanded lattice parameter, 12.08 Å, giving some support to Dyadin's idea that the high pressure phase transition involves a conversion of Structure II to Structure I. Other phases observed in the recovered product include Ice IX and amorphous materials. The reversion of the high pressure sample to the structure II hydrate was followed by differential scanning calorimetry. At ambient pressure, the high pressure sample converts slowly back to Structure II hydrate event at 77K.NRCC No. 35786.  相似文献

Tetrahydrofuran (THF) hydrate was formed in bulk as well as in glass beads pack with a mean diameter of 3.0 mm by controlling the temperature under ambient pressure. Images of THF hydrate formation procedure were obtained using the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique. The experiment results showed that MRI is an effective method for the detection of hydrate formation. Saturation of hydrate formed both in bulk and glass beads can be confirmed by intensity integration of MRI images.  相似文献

The effects of a typical anti-agglomerant, sorbitan monooleate (Span80), on the interactions between cyclopentane (CyC5) hydrate particles and water droplets were investigated using a micromechanical force (MMF) apparatus. The concentration of Span80 in CyC5 was ranged from 0.01?wt% to 1?wt%, and the experimental temperature was set at 1.5°C and 7°C, respectively. The results indicate that the absorption of Span80 on the droplet surface can render the interfaces more stable, preventing hydrate agglomeration. When two particles close to each other are in electrophoretic motion, each particle is under the influence of the nonuniform electric field generated by the other particle. Two particles may attract or repel each other due to the dielectric force, depending on their positions in the nonuniform electric field. In this work, the dielectric interaction and the subsequent relative motion of the two arbitrarily oriented spherical particles are analyzed. The dielectric force is obtained by integrating the Maxwell stress. The result is valid for arbitrary orientations of the particles under the thin electrical-double-layer assumption. The magnitude of the dielectric force is compared to the so-called inertia-induced force, which shows that the dielectric force is normally much greater than the inertia-induced force. The relative velocity of particles is determined by the force balance between the dielectric force and the Stokes drag. The regions of attraction and repulsion are defined. It is shown that a pair of particles eventually aligns parallel to the externally applied electric field, except in the case where the two particles are initially oriented perpendicular to the electric field. A closed-form analytical solution is obtained for the particle trajectory by using the approximate expression for the dielectric force valid for not-too-closely located particles.  相似文献

We have investigated the hydrodynamic drag force between charged particles in electrolyte solutions, specifically the electroviscous force that arises from the distortion of the electrical double layers by the flow field. We report an improvement on the thin-double-layer theory (S.G. Bike, D.C. Prieve, J. Colloid Interface Sci. 136 (1990) 95-112), using a more accurate boundary condition for the radial charge current. The differences become important when the double layers start to overlap. We have found that nonlinear hydrodynamic effects are small, whereas nonlinear electric effects can be significant, in some instances leading to qualitatively different behavior. If the ion diffusivities are highly asymmetric, the electroviscous force can be reduced by an order of magnitude when there is an excess of the mobile ions in the double layer. The common supposition that there are substantial differences in the electroviscous force predicted by constant-charge and constant-potential boundary conditions is incorrect; our calculations show that it is an artifact introduced by the Debye-Hückel approximation.  相似文献
