The electroclinic effect, in a material having a first order SA to SC* transition, is studied using the half leaky guided mode geometry. Using an approximately 1 μm thick, homogeneously aligned cell, the voltage induced director twist is characterized at a few temperatures in the SA phase. The mean field theory readily explains the data recorded at low fields where a linear dependence on voltage is found. However, at higher fields, an unexpected saturation occurs which is most likely caused by the influence of strong surface anchoring forces.  相似文献

We have observed the diffusion constants of a dye in several liquid crystals by forced Rayleigh scattering. In a liquid crystal which has a standard phase sequence of N-SA-SC, the diffusion anisotropy changes at the N-SA phase transition and increases with decreasing temperature in SA and SC phases. The diffusion constants exhibit a rather smooth decrease with decreasing temperature except an anomaly at the SA-Sc phase transition. In a liquid crystal which has the antiferroelectric SCA phase, however, the diffusion constants show discontinuous increase and decrease at the SA-Sc and the Sc-ScA phase transition temperatures, respectively: the diffusion constant in SC is larger than that in the higher temperature SA phase. Anomalous signal increase and profile were observed at the phase transition temperatures, and were ascribed to the complementary transient grating due to the coexistence of two phases.  相似文献

High pressure studies for the n = 12 homologues of the 3-fluoro-4((R) or (S)-methylheptyloxy)-4'-(4-alkyloxy-3-fluorobenzoyloxy) tolanes series have been performed by thermobarometric analysis. The phase sequence presents two Twist Grain Boundary phases denoted TGBA and TGBC. The pressure-temperature phase diagram has been determined; it exhibits a SC* phase, and an induced phase identified as SA which does not exist under atmospheric pressure. The TGBA temperature stability domain versus pressure first increases, then rises to a maximum and finally disappears. Such phase behaviour leads to an experimental observation of two multicritical points SC*-SA-TGBA and SA-TGBA-N* for the pure compound under high pressures. This result confirms the existence of singular points previously predicted by the Renn-Lubensky theory.  相似文献

Electro-optic and dielectric studies have been performed for a thioester (with a chiral chain incorporating the lactic acid ester moiety), which exhibits a monotropic room temperature ferroelectric Sc* phase. Moreover, there are some hints that this substance also shows the recently discovered helicoidal SA* phase. The dielectric and electro-optic measurements have been carried out using ITO coated glass plates (d = 10 μm). Planar alignment was obtained by means of an AC electric field (v = 1Hz and Vp-p = 70V). The tilt angle and spontaneous polarization temperature dependences show that the SA*-Sc* transition is of second order. Soft mode behaviour in the pretransitional region also confirms this result. The monotropic Sc* phase exhibits a rather strong Goldstone mode (GM) with pronounced temperature dependence of the dielectric parameters. The molecular reorientation about the long axis has been found for both principal alignments. The homeotropic effective alignment was obtained by applying a magnetic field of 1-2 T to a thick sample (c. 100μm) placed in a specially designed cell for anisotropic high frequency measurements. The reorientation about the long axis gives a broad spectrum centred at c. 100MHz. This spectrum shows minor changes at the SA*-Sc* transition.  相似文献

Three series of ferroelectric liquid crystals containing a (2S)-2-(6-(4-hydroxybiphenyl-4'-carbonyloxy)-2'-naphthyl)propionate mesogenic group and oligo(oxyethylene) spacers were synthesized. These obtained liquid crystal compounds were characterized by NMR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), optical polarized microscopy (POM), and X-ray powder diffraction measurements. Some of these materials containing four phenyl rings of ester cores (i.e. -Ph-Ph-COO-naph-) and chiral heptyl tail exhibited a rich mesomorphic behaviour, a blue phase (BP), a cholesteric phase (Ch), a smectic A (SA), a twist grain boundary A (TGBA), and a chiral smectic C (SC*) phase. Another series containing four phenyl rings of ester cores and chiral butyl and pentyl chain tails revealed only a SA phase and a SC* phase. Moreover, a crystal E phase was observed in the short spacer chain (n = 0 or 1) homologues of three series of compounds. Also, the mesomorphism properties were discussed as a function of spacer units, numbers of aromatic rings of core, and different terminal asymmetric moieties.  相似文献

Dielectric spectroscopy of a ferroelectric liquid crystal with planar texture in the frequency range 100 Hz to 1 MHz has been carried out as a function of temperature from 25°C to 60°C at different DC fields varying from 0 to 12 kVcm-1. From the measured dielectric strengths and relaxation frequencies, it is observed that the material has a Sc*-SA* transition at 56·1°C and a SA*-I transition at 58°C. The data of the Sc* phase have been assigned to the Goldstone mode. The rotational viscosity and elastic constant have been calculated from the observed data. The capacitance shows an abrupt drop at the critical DC field where unwinding of the helix occurs. The measured value of the critical field decreases with temperature and agrees to literature data from electrooptical experiments. On applying a DC field greater than 6·5 kV cm-1 at room temperature, the liquid crystal shows the unwound Sc* and SA* phases.  相似文献

We report measurements of the molecular tilt angle of a ferroelectric liquid crystal mixture (ZLI 3654), using infra-red spectroscopy, and of the optical tilt angle using polarizing microscopy. The molecular tilt angle is found to be approximately the same for different molecular vibrations. The second rank orientational order parameter for the axis of molecular vibrations of different groups of the molecule for homogeneously aligned samples have been determined as a function of temperature. The order parameter depends slightly on the sample thickness and is about 8 per cent higher for a lower thickness (∼ 7 μm) compared to a higher thickness (∼ 12 μm). The order parameter does not change significantly at the SC*-SA transition. The order parameter of SC* is found to be unaffected by the application of a constant electric field. The order parameter for the alkyl chain is found to be about three times lower than for the molecular core.  相似文献

The liquid crystalline properties of 1-(alkylamino)-3-[(4'-hexyl-trans-cyclohexyl-4'-phenyl]-prop-1-en-3-one-s, from methyl to octadecyl, and their copper (II) complexes have been examined by optical, DSC, X-ray and EPR methods. The compounds are enantiotropic nematogens except those having the shortest and the longest terminal chains. Short chains promote the SA phase in both ligands and complexes, whereas long chains promote SC and crystal H phases for the ligands or SA and SC phases for the complexes. A partly bilayer smectic Ad phase is observed from ligands terminated with short non-polar substituents. Direct isotropisation from the crystal H phase for some of the compounds, as well as other phase transitions have been studied. The molecular shape of the complexes and the organization of their mesomorphic phases are discussed, based on the refractive indices and X-ray data.  相似文献

The spontaneous polarization and tilt angle have been measured as a function of temperature and concentration in the SC* phase of four binary ferroelectric liquid crystal mixtures. The substances have been chosen in a way that different situations could be studied, for example mixtures of a chiral substance (Ps non-zero) with a non-chiral one (Ps = 0) and mixtures of chiral compounds with the same sign of Ps as well as with opposite signs. The results have been interpreted by means of a molecular rotational model and potentials associated with the tilt as well as with the chirality have been determined as a function of concentration.  相似文献

The effects of a second branched alkyl chain, lateral substitution, and double chiral centres on the phase transition and spontaneous polarization of the ferroelectric liquid crystal having a 2-methylalkanoyl group have been investigated. The introduction of another branched alkyl chain away from the 2-methylalkanoyl group causes a sharp SC*-SA transition peak and also enhances the ferroelectric properties in the SC* phase. Since the order within the layers is liquid-like in the SC* phase, the alkyl chain branching away from both the chiral centre and a polar group affects the overall motion of the molecule in the SC* phase. In the system of a compound with double chiral centres, the existence of the chiral centre in the 2-methylalkanoyl group affects the phase transition temperatures and the magnitude of the spontaneous polarization in the SC* phase. On the other hand, the existence of the chiral centre in the 2-methylbutyl group only affects the stability of a more highly ordered smectic phase appearing below the SC* phase.  相似文献

Liquid crystal induced circular dichroism (LCICD) measurements were made to investigate the pretransitional phenomena in the SA phase just above the SA-S*C and SA-S*CA phase transitions of both the first and the second order. The pretransitional LCICD in SA was observed in the second order phase transition to S*c and S*cA, suggesting the existence of a dynamic helical structure in SA. Such behaviour disappears when the transition is of the first order. It seems that the handedness of the dynamic helix in SA is the same as that in S*c even when the lower temperature phase is S*cA. This is explained as a result of a dominant contribution of ferroelectric soft mode.  相似文献

A new series with a chiral tolane core has been synthesized. These materials belong to the optically active series: 3-fluoro-4-[(R) or (S)-1-methylheptyloxy]4'-(4'-alkyloxy-3'-fluorobenzoyloxy)tolanes (nFBTFO1M7). For the first time, the helical SA* phase or TGBA phase is found in all of the derivatives from heptyloxy to octadecyloxy. The SA-SA*-N* phase sequence is observed in several compounds with short chains and the SC*-SA-SA*-N* phase sequence is obtained with the decyloxy derivative. The TGBA phase has filament or cholesteric textures. The helical pitch of the TGBA phase is short for the octadecyloxy derivative and is compared with that for different chain lengths as a function of temperature. The layer spacing in the TGBA phase shows that it is incommensurate with the fully elongated molecular length.  相似文献

Broadband dielectric measurements on a multicomponent ferroelectric liquid crystal mixture have been performed. The alignment was homeotropic and the cell and sample holder were the same in the whole frequency range. Two relaxation processes have been observed in all liquid crystal phases with shapes given by the Havriliak-Negami and inverted Havriliak-Negami functions. Strengths and frequencies of both modes have been obtained for the different phases. The values of the latter and their activation energies allowed us to assign the low and high frequency mechanism to the molecular reorientation around the transversal axis and around the longitudinal axis, respectively. The behaviour of this high frequency mode does not show any jump in the SA-S*c phase transition, neither in the amplitude nor in the frequency, indicating that the appearance of the spontaneous polarization in the S*c phase is not the consequence of the freezing of this mode.  相似文献

The electroclinic effect in the SA phase of (S) (4'-decyloxy-2'-hydroxybenzylidene)-4-amino(1-ethoxycarbonylethyl) cinnamate has been studied. The induced tilt angles have been measured as a function of temperature near the SA-S*I transition at 87°C. The response of the material to different voltages and frequencies has been analysed by using two complementary optical techniques. At low A.C. probe fields the amplitude of the induced tilt shows a relaxational behaviour which can be described by a single relaxation time. The relaxation frequencies have been found to be linear in temperature near the transition, in a similar way to the SA-S*C transition.  相似文献

Derivatives of optically active cyanocyclohexylcyclohexanone have been synthesized and used as dipolar chiral dopants to induce ferroelectric SC* phases in an achiral host phase. The dopant molecules are the first examples in which the chiral centres are incorporated into a rigid core with transverse dipoles directly attached. The spontaneous polarization Ps and the tilt angle θ of the induced SC* phases have been measured. Ps is strongly influenced by the relatively small changes of the molecular structure of the cyclohexanones, for example a change of the sign of Ps or a vanishing value of Ps. These effects are discussed in terms of a sterically hindered rotation of the dopant molecules around their long axes and explained by the assumption that the transverse dipole must not be necessarily parallel to Ps in the equilibrium state of rotation.  相似文献

Using a photoelastic modulator-based novel set-up, the electric field-induced in-plane birefringence and the optical rotatory power (ORP) were measured of an antiferroelectric liquid crystalline compound (12OF1M7) in its various phases using 30 µm homeotropic cells. Some specific signatures of the in-plane birefringence and of the ORP for the various phases are being established. A relatively small threshold field is needed for the unwinding process of the antiferroelectric phase with a unit cell of four layers [SmCA*(1/2)] compared with that for two layers [SmCA*(0)]. On application of the electric field on the high temperature side of the SmCA*(1/2) phase (80.1-81.5°C), a field-induced phase transition is shown to occur directly to the SmC* phase, whereas on the lower temperature side (79.4-80.1°C) the transition takes place to SmC* via the SmCA*(1/3) phase. The in-plane birefringence exhibits a critical power law dependence for the SmC*-SmA transition. The ORP changes sign within the temperature range of the phase with a unit cell of three layers, reflecting a change in the handedness during this phase. Using tilted conoscopy, the results for the biaxiality and the apparent tilt angle for a smectic liquid crystal with a tilt angle greater than 18° in the ferroelectric phase are reported. The biaxiality implies the difference in the refractive indices between the two minor axes of the refractive index ellipsoid. The optical transmittance at visible and IR wavelengths for free-standing films reveal characteristic reflection bands for these phases. The modulated structures of the reflected bands appear just above the SmCA* phase and below SmCA*(1/3); these are possibly due to an easy deformation of the phase by the surfaces.  相似文献

Seventeen esters, derived from 4-n-alkoxy-3-fluorophenols and 4-(5-n-alkyl-2-thienyl)benzoic acids, have been prepared and their liquid crystal transition temperatures determined by thermal optical microscopy. On cooling the isotropic liquid, the SA-SC-SA sequence of phases reported for the octyloxy-octyl and octyloxy-nonyl esters has been observed for certain other homologues, principally members of the 4-(5-n-nonyl-2-thienyl)benzoates. For these compounds, the temperature range of occurrence of the intermediate SC phase decreases as the length of the alkoxy chain increases (for the hexyloxy-nonyl to dodecyloxy-nonyl esters) and the Sc phase is absent for the tetradecyloxy-nonyl homologue.  相似文献

Two series of ferroelectric liquid crystals containing a phenyl biphenyl carboxylate mesogenic group and oligooxyethylene spacers were synthesized. The mesomorphic behaviours of the compounds were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), optical polarizing microscopy (POM) and powder X-ray diffraction measurements. These series all contain a smectic A (SA), a chiral smectic C (SC) and a crystal E (Cr E) phase sequence. The ordered smectic Cr E phase was observed for the short spacer chain (n = 0, 1, 2) homologues of the two series. Moreover, the mesomorphic properties are discussed as a function of the oligooxyethylene spacer length, and the position of the aromatic core rings. These results indicate that the structures with a rigid part (biphenyl group) closer to the flexible spacer chain (oxyethylene unit) tend to form the symmetrical smectic SA and Cr E phases.  相似文献

A chemical derivatization technique was used to control the pretilt angle of a liquid crystal. A polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) alignment layer, which gives a very low pretilt angle when in contact with the liquid crystal (LC), was reacted with trifluoroacetic anhydride (TFAA) in the gas phase to change polar -OH groups to -OCOCF3 groups. By introduction of the -OCOCF3 groups in to the PVA, we obtained homeotropic alignment of the E7 LC molecules. The homeotropic alignment of E7 LC molecules in contact with the derivatized PVA alignment layer was confirmed by FTIR and microscopy with crossed polarizers. The change of liquid crystal molecules from homogeneous to homeotropic alignment may be caused by the decrease in surface tension of the PVA alignment layer, due to substitution of the polar -OH groups by -OCOCF3 groups in the gas phase derivatization reaction.  相似文献

As part of our detailed comparative studies of groups of liquid-crystalline compounds that belong to a homologous series, we present phase-transition studies of the compounds N-(4-n-pentyloxybenzylidene)4'-n-pentylaniline (5O.5) and N-(4-n-nonyloxybenzylidene)4'-n-butylaniline (9O.4) using different experimental techniques. The compound 5O.5 is reported to exhibit a phase sequence N, SA, SC, SB and SG, while 90.4 shows the sequence SA, SF and SG. The salient features of our work on 5O.5 are (i) a new smectic F phase is found in place of the reported smectic B phase, which is confirmed by both miscibility and X-ray studies; (ii) the formation of smectic-C-like short-range order in the nematic phase well above the SA-N transition; and (iii) a large tilt-angle variation in the smectic C phase (0-23·5°C) in a small temperature range (4·1°C). The phase changes across the SA-I transition, and for the first time across SF-SA transition, are carried out by volumetric studies. The detailed inferences of these are also presented.  相似文献
