Summary A microwave coherent backscattering experiment has been carried out on Mirabelle, a weakly ionised plasma device, with the
objective of measuring the electron density fluctuation level. The experiment is a preliminary step in order to prepare the
detection system for a microwave stimulated backscattering experiment. The incident electromagnetic wave is focused in front
of a plane grid which excites ion acoustic or electron Bernstein waves inducing fluctuations in the plasma. The backscattering
signal is collected by the launching circuit and detected by homodyne mixing. The typical ratio of the scattered power to
the incident power is about 10−12 and the relative density fluctuations are of the order of δn
e/n
e=10−3 against a background electron density ofn
e=1–5·109 cm−3. The backscattering measurement is compared with Langmuir probe measurements. The spectral width of the backscattered signal
has also been studied, by taking into account effects due to the incident wave focusing and plasma wave damping.

Relativistic propagation of a nonlinearly-coupled circularly-polarised electromagnetic wave and a Langmuir wave along the applied magnetic field is considered. Analytical solutions are given or are indicated for some special cases like purely transverse waves and purely longitudinal waves. In the presence of an applied magnetic field, the incident circularly polarised electromagnetic wave is found to propagate further into denser regions of the plasma — a result which is in accord with the so-called inverse Faraday effect. Finally, we shall consider general coupled transverse and longitudinal waves for which we give an approximate solution. We investigate whether this system of coupled waves exhibits any internal resonances and consequent energy exchange between them. 相似文献

Using hydrodynamical model of semiconductor plasma analytical investigations are made for the amplitude modulation as well
as demodulation of an electromagnetic wave in a transversely magnetised acousto-optic semiconducting plasma. The inclusion
of carriers diffusion adds new dimension in the analysis presented here. Analysis are made under different wave number regions
over a wide range of cyclotron frequency. It has been seen that diffusion of charge carriers modifies amplitude modulation
and demodulation processes effectively. Numerical estimations are made for n-InSb crystal irradiated by pump wave of frequency 1.6 T s-1. Complete absorption of the waves takes place in all the possible wave lengths regimes when the cyclotron frequency becomes exactly equal to (v
2 + )1/2.

The problem of bending waves localized near the free edge of a transversely isotropic plate is investigated using the Ambartsumian higher-order plate theory which takes account of the transverse shears generated by flexural deformation. Unlike the first-order Reissner-Mindlin theory, which also takes account of transverse shears, Ambartsumian's analysis does not demand that plane normal cross-sections remain plane during bending. Within this analysis the existence of localized bending waves in transversely isotropic plates is established, and solutions of the dispersion equation obtained for different values of the elastic parameters.The analysis of frequencies of localized bending waves shows that for thick plates the effect of anisotropy can be considerable. For the particular case of vibrations of a narrow plate, from the long wave approximation a new beam vibration equation of the Timoshenko type is obtained for a transversally isotropic plate. 相似文献

We derive the convective terms in the damping which determine the structure of the moving charge-density wave (CDW), and study the effect of a current flowing transverse to conducting chains on the CDW dynamics along the chains. In contrast to a recent prediction we find that the effect is orders of magnitude smaller, and that contributions from transverse currents of electron- and holelike quasiparticles to the force exerted on the CDW along the chains act in the opposite directions. We discuss recent experimental verification of the effect and demonstrate experimentally that geometry effects might mimic the transverse current effect. 相似文献

Metasurfaces are artificially structured thin films with unusual properties on demand. Different from metamaterials, the metasurfaces change the electromagnetic waves mainly by exploiting the boundary conditions, rather than the constitutive parameters in three dimensional(3D) spaces. Despite the intrinsic similarities in the operational principles, there is not a universal theory available for the understanding and design of metasurface-based devices. In this article, we propose the concept of metasurface waves(M-waves) and provide a general theory to describe the principles of them. Most importantly, it is shown that the M-waves share some fundamental properties such as extremely short wavelength, abrupt phase change and strong chromatic dispersion, which make them different from traditional bulk waves. It is shown that these properties can enable many important applications such as subwavelength imaging and lithography, planar optical devices, broadband anti-reflection, absorption and polarization conversion. Our results demonstrated unambiguously that traditional laws of diffraction, refraction, reflection and absorption should be revised by using the novel properties of M-waves. The theory provided here may pave the way for the design of new electromagnetic devices and further improvement of metasurfaces. The exotic properties of metasurfaces may also form the foundations for two new sub-disciplines called "subwavelength surface electromagnetics" and "subwavelength electromagnetics". 相似文献

Nonlinear optical media that are normally dispersive support a new type of localized (nondiffractive and nondispersive) wave packets that are X shaped in space and time and have slower than exponential decay. Instability of traveling IR waves within a waveguide structure is discussed. A practical model of a traveling wave amplifier of a solid state is proposed, utilizing an optical waveguide. The mechanism of instability is interpreted in terms of an interaction between a plasmon wave and a circuit one under a constraining boundary condition. Properties of the traveling amplification and related problems are discussed, with appropriately suggested semiconductor materials and device designs. The features of the amplifier are a simple structure, a low DC biasing power dissipation for room-temperature operation, unidirectionality, and a wide wavelength range from IR or submillimeter order, suited to various applications. 相似文献
