Let G be a connected, undirected graph without loops and without multiple edges. For a pair of distinct vertices u and v, a minimum {u, v}-separating set is a smallest set of edges in G whose removal disconnects u and v. The edge connectivity of G, denoted λ(G), is defined to be the minimum cardinality of a minimum {u, v}-separating set as u and v range over all pairs of distinct vertices in G. We introduce and investigate the eavesdropping number, denoted ε(G), which is defined to be the maximum cardinality of a minimum {u, v}-separating set as u and v range over all pairs of distinct vertices in G. Results are presented for regular graphs and maximally locally connected graphs, as well as for a number of common families of graphs.  相似文献

The most popular bounded-degree derivative network of the hypercube is the butterfly network. The Benes network consists of back-to-back butterflies. There exist a number of topological representations that are used to describe butterfly—like architectures. We identify a new topological representation of butterfly and Benes networks.The minimum metric dimension problem is to find a minimum set of vertices of a graph G(V,E) such that for every pair of vertices u and v of G, there exists a vertex w with the condition that the length of a shortest path from u to w is different from the length of a shortest path from v to w. It is NP-hard in the general sense. We show that it remains NP-hard for bipartite graphs. The algorithmic complexity status of this NP-hard problem is not known for butterfly and Benes networks, which are subclasses of bipartite graphs. By using the proposed new representations, we solve the minimum metric dimension problem for butterfly and Benes networks. The minimum metric dimension problem is important in areas such as robot navigation in space applications.  相似文献

The supereulerian graph problem, raised by Boesch et al. (J Graph Theory 1:79–84, 1977), asks when a graph has a spanning eulerian subgraph. Pulleyblank showed that such a decision problem, even when restricted to planar graphs, is NP-complete. Jaeger and Catlin independently showed that every 4-edge-connected graph has a spanning eulerian subgraph. In 1992, Zhan showed that every 3-edge-connected, essentially 7-edge-connected graph has a spanning eulerian subgraph. It was conjectured in 1995 that every 3-edge-connected, essentially 5-edge-connected graph has a spanning eulerian subgraph. In this paper, we show that if G is a 3-edge-connected, essentially 4-edge-connected graph and if for every pair of adjacent vertices u and v, d G (u) + d G (v) ≥ 9, then G has a spanning eulerian subgraph.  相似文献

The Wiener index of a graph G is defined as W(G)=∑ u,v d G (u,v), where d G (u,v) is the distance between u and v in G and the sum goes over all the pairs of vertices. In this paper, we first present the 6 graphs with the first to the sixth smallest Wiener index among all graphs with n vertices and k cut edges and containing a complete subgraph of order nk; and then we construct a graph with its Wiener index no less than some integer among all graphs with n vertices and k cut edges.  相似文献

A time-stamped graph is an undirected graph with a real number on each edge. Vertex u influences vertex v if there is an increasing path from u to v. The induced influence digraph of a time-stamped graph is the directed graph that records the influences. In this paper we study the realizability problem: Given a parameter value, does there exist a time-stamped graph whose induced influence digraph has the given parameter value? In particular, we solve this problem when the parameter is the number of arcs. Moreover, if the candidates for the time-stamped graphs are restricted to trees, then every realizable value can be achieved by a tree homeomorphic to K2 or K1,3. A magnet is a pair u, v of adjacent vertices such that the proper neighbours of u are completely linked to the proper neighbours of v. It has been shown that one can reduce the graph by removing the two vertices u, v of a magnet and introducing a new vertex linked to all common neighbours of u and v without changing the stability number. We prove that all graphs containing no chordless cycle C k (k ≥ 5) and none of eleven forbidden subgraphs can be reduced to a stable set by repeated use of magnets. For such graphs a polynomial algorithm is given to determine the stability number.  相似文献

Let G be a finite connected graph with no cut vertex. A distance tree T is a spanning tree of G which further satisfies the condition that for some vertex v, dG(v, u) = dT(v, u) for all u, where dG(v, u) denotes the distance of u from v in the graph G. The conjecture that if all distance trees of G are isomorphic to each other then G is a regular graph, is settled affirmatively. The conjecture was made by Chartrand and Schuster.  相似文献

The directed distance d(u,v) from u to v in a strong digraph D is the length of a shortest u-v path in D. The eccentricity e(v) of a vertex v in D is the directed distance from v to a vertex furthest from v in D. The center and periphery of a strong digraph are two well known subdigraphs induced by those vertices of minimum and maximum eccentricities, respectively. We introduce the interior and annulus of a digraph which are two induced subdigraphs involving the remaining vertices. Several results concerning the interior and annulus of a digraph are presented.  相似文献

Given graphs G, H, and lists L(v) ? V(H), v ε V(G), a list homomorphism of G to H with respect to the lists L is a mapping f : V(G) → V(H) such that uv ε E(G) implies f(u)f(v) ε E(H), and f(v) ε L(v) for all v ε V(G). The list homomorphism problem for a fixed graph H asks whether or not an input graph G, together with lists L(v) ? V(H), v ε V(G), admits a list homomorphism with respect to L. In two earlier papers, we classified the complexity of the list homomorphism problem in two important special cases: When H is a reflexive graph (every vertex has a loop), the problem is polynomial time solvable if H is an interval graph, and is NP‐complete otherwise. When H is an irreflexive graph (no vertex has a loop), the problem is polynomial time solvable if H is bipartite and H is a circular arc graph, and is NP‐complete otherwise. In this paper, we extend these classifications to arbitrary graphs H (each vertex may or may not have a loop). We introduce a new class of graphs, called bi‐arc graphs, which contains both reflexive interval graphs (and no other reflexive graphs), and bipartite graphs with circular arc complements (and no other irreflexive graphs). We show that the problem is polynomial time solvable when H is a bi‐arc graph, and is NP‐complete otherwise. Let G be an edge-colored graph. The monochromatic tree partition problem is to find the minimum number of vertex disjoint monochromatic trees to cover the all vertices of G. In the authors’ previous work, it has been proved that the problem is NP-complete and there does not exist any constant factor approximation algorithm for it unless P = NP. In this paper the authors show that for any fixed integer r ≥ 5, if the edges of a graph G are colored by r colors, called an r-edge-colored graph, the problem remains NP-complete. Similar result holds for the monochromatic path (cycle) partition problem. Therefore, to find some classes of interesting graphs for which the problem can be solved in polynomial time seems interesting. A linear time algorithm for the monochromatic path partition problem for edge-colored trees is given. For digraphs D and H, a mapping f : V(D) → V(H) is a homomorphism of D to H if uvA(D) implies f(u) f(v) ∈ A(H). If, moreover, each vertex uV(D) is associated with costs c i (u), iV(H), then the cost of the homomorphism f is ∑ uV(D) c f(u)(u). For each fixed digraph H, we have the minimum cost homomorphism problem for H (abbreviated MinHOM(H)). The problem is to decide, for an input graph D with costs c i (u), uV(D), iV(H), whether there exists a homomorphism of D to H and, if one exists, to find one of minimum cost. We obtain a dichotomy classification for the time complexity of MinHOM(H) when H is an oriented cycle. We conjecture a dichotomy classification for all digraphs with possible loops.  相似文献

Let D be a digraph. The competition-common enemy graph (CCE graph) of D has the same set of vertices as D and an edge between vertices u and v if and only if there are vertices w and x in D such that (w,u), (w,v), (u,x), and (v,x) are arcs of D. We call a graph a CCE graph if it is the CCE graph of some digraph. In this paper, we show that if the CCE graph of a doubly partial order does not contain C4 as an induced subgraph, it is an interval graph. We also show that any interval graph together with enough isolated vertices is the CCE graph of some doubly partial order.  相似文献

The study of Hamiltonian graphs began with Dirac’s classic result in 1952. This was followed by that of Ore in 1960. In 1984 Fan generalized both these results with the following result: If G is a 2-connected graph of order n and max{d(u),d(v)}≥n/2 for each pair of vertices u and v with distance d(u,v)=2, then G is Hamiltonian. In 1991 Faudree–Gould–Jacobson–Lesnick proved that if G is a 2-connected graph and |N(u)∪N(v)|+δ(G)≥n for each pair of nonadjacent vertices u,vV(G), then G is Hamiltonian. This paper generalizes the above results when G is 3-connected. We show that if G is a 3-connected graph of order n and max{|N(x)∪N(y)|+d(u),|N(w)∪N(z)|+d(v)}≥n for every choice of vertices x,y,u,w,z,v such that d(x,y)=d(y,u)=d(w,z)=d(z,v)=d(u,v)=2 and where x,y and u are three distinct vertices and w,z and v are also three distinct vertices (and possibly |{x,y}∩{w,z}| is 1 or 2), then G is Hamiltonian.  相似文献

 For two vertices u and v of a connected graph G, the set I[u,v] consists of all those vertices lying on a uv shortest path in G, while for a set S of vertices of G, the set I[S] is the union of all sets I[u,v] for u,vS. A set S is convex if I[S]=S. The convexity number con(G) of G is the maximum cardinality of a proper convex set of G. The clique number ω(G) is the maximum cardinality of a clique in G. If G is a connected graph of order n that is not complete, then n≥3 and 2≤ω(G)≤con(G)≤n−1. It is shown that for every triple l,k,n of integers with n≥3 and 2≤lkn−1, there exists a noncomplete connected graph G of order n with ω(G)=l and con(G)=k. An L(2,1)-labelling of a graph G is a function from the vertex set V (G) to the set of all nonnegative integers such that |f(u) f(v)| ≥ 2 if d G (u,v)=1 and |f(u) f(v)| ≥ 1 if d G (u,v)=2.The L(2,1)-labelling problem is to find the smallest number,denoted by λ(G),such that there exists an L(2,1)-labelling function with no label greater than it.In this paper,we study this problem for trees.Our results improve the result of Wang [The L(2,1)-labelling of trees,Discrete Appl.Math.154 (2006) 598-603].  相似文献

The “distance” from vertexu to vertexv in a strongly connected digraph is the number of arcs in a shortest directed path fromu tov. The addressing problem, first formulated in the undirected case by Graham and Pollak, entails the assignment of a string of symbols to each vertex in such a way that the distances between vertices are equal to modified Hamming distances between corresponding strings. A scheme for addressing digraphs is proposed, and the minimum address length is studied both in general and in certain special cases. The minimum number of colors required in a sigma coloring of a graph G is called its sigma chromatic number σ(G). The sigma chromatic number of a graph G never exceeds its chromatic number χ(G) and for every pair a, b of positive integers with ab, there exists a connected graph G with σ(G) = a and χ(G) = b. There is a connected graph G of order n with σ(G) = k for every pair k, n of positive integers with kn if and only if kn − 1. A continuous maximum flow problem finds the largest t such that div v = t F(x, y) is possible with a capacity constraint ||(v 1, v 2)|| ≤ c(x, y). The dual problem finds a minimum cut ∂ S which is filled to capacity by the flow through it. This model problem has found increasing application in medical imaging, and the theory continues to develop (along with new algorithms). Remaining difficulties include explicit streamlines for the maximum flow, and constraints that are analogous to a directed graph.  相似文献

The Erdős-Sós conjecture says that a graph G on n vertices and number of edges e(G) > n(k− 1)/2 contains all trees of size k. In this paper we prove a sufficient condition for a graph to contain every tree of size k formulated in terms of the minimum edge degree ζ(G) of a graph G defined as ζ(G) = min{d(u) + d(v) − 2: uvE(G)}. More precisely, we show that a connected graph G with maximum degree Δ(G) ≥ k and minimum edge degree ζ(G) ≥ 2k − 4 contains every tree of k edges if d G (x) + d G (y) ≥ 2k − 4 for all pairs x, y of nonadjacent neighbors of a vertex u of d G (u) ≥ k.  相似文献
